Alvin Merle Hagedorn
Born in Blair, Nebraska on October 31, 1922
Departed on August 15, 2005. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Alvin Merle Hagedorn, 82, of 2131 First Ave. S.E., died Monday at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer. A private family inurnment service will be held prior to the visitation that will take place at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Al is survived by his wife of 49 years Joanne, one daughter Lori Coronado of Cedar Rapids; one granddaughter Heather Bray of Madison, Wisconsin and mother in law Bernice Wren of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and his beloved daughter, Lyn Bray.

Al was born on October 31, 1922 in Blair, Nebraska to Rev. Marinus and Anna Bladt Hagedorn, the younger of two children and the son of a Lutheran minister. He always said he had to live up to the reputation of being a Preacher's Kid and was a mischievous youth. He graduated from Fremont High School in Fremont, Nebraska, joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific during WW2 as a fireman on a transport ship. He never talked about his war experiences.

On February 25, 1956, he married Joanne Wren in Cedar Rapids. They made their home in Cedar Rapids for the past 49 years with the exception of a two-year stint in Tucson, Arizona. Al worked as a manager at Rockwell Collins until his retirement in 1972. He then worked for Kilborn Photo as a quality control manager until his retirement in 1985.

He enjoyed a life long passion for the game of golf, and had many close golfing buddies. He participated in league bowling for many years and enjoyed rooting for his old teammates when he was no longer able to play. Al had a wonderful voice and was a member of a barbershop quartet for several years. He used to sing his daughters to sleep when they were young.

His retirement years were spent golfing, traveling with his wife and volunteering at St. Luke's Hospital in the operating area. Al made many friends among the staff at St. Luke's and will be remembered for his willingness to do any job, and his ready smile. He was honored with their Volunteer of the Year award in 2005. Al will be remembered by his many friends for his witty sense of humor, and his willingness to always help a friend. His family will treasure their memories of his intense love for them, his compassion for others and his tender heart He will deeply missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being set up in Al's name thru the St. Luke's Hospital Foundation.

Donald L. Hunt
Born in Earlville, Iowa on May 28, 1909
Departed on June 18, 2005. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Donald L. Hunt, 96, of Cottage Grove Place died there Saturday, June 18, following a short illness. Services with military honors at 11 AM Wednesday in Central Park Presbyterian Church with Rev. Rose Taul and the Reserve Officers Association officiating. Entombment in Chapel of Memories Mausoleum in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday with a Masonic service beginning at 6:30 PM.
Survivors include his wife Marie R. Hunt, a sister B. Marie Hunt of Manchester, 12 step children, 48 step grandchildren, 38 step great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 52 years Pearl Kinseth Hunt, his brother Gerald and his sister in law Rae Hunt.
Donald was born May 28, 1909 in Earlville, Iowa, to Lester and Beulah Ziether Hunt. He graduated from Iowa State University with degrees in Electrical Engineering, and Horse Drawn Military Tactics. He served in WW II in the Pacific operation for General Douglas MacArthur. He retired from the US Army at the rank of Colonel and was an active member of the Reserve Officers Association. Don was employed by the predecessor companies of Alliant Energy for 44 years, retiring in February, 1975.
He was also a member of Central Park Presbyterian Church and Mt. Hermon Masonic Lodge.
Memorial contributions may be made to Central Park Presbyterian Church, Amenity Hospice, or to St. Luke's Hospital.
Masonic rites by Mt. Hermon Masonic Lodge.

Martha Z. Hanson
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on September 29, 1918
Departed on June 4, 2005. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Cemetery: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery
Martha Z. Hanson, 86, of 282 Sussex Drive NE, died at Manor Care on Saturday, June 4, 2005 after a lengthy illness. Private family services will be held at a later date. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Cedar Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Martha is survived by her husband, Donald.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, George.

Martha was born September 29, 1918 in Cedar Rapids to Anton and Anna Petranek Zemlicka. She married Donald G. Hanson on July 26, 1947 in Cedar Rapids. She was employed by Penick and Ford in the traffic department for many years.

She was a member of Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church, the Cedar Rapids Camera Club, and the Czech Heritage Association.

Bernice A. Hanson
Born in Boone, IA on March 6, 1914
Departed on May 31, 2005. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Bernice A. Hanson, 91, of 3536 Elm Avenue SE, died at Cottage Grove Place, Tuesday, May 31, 2005, after a short illness. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church by the Rev. James Adix. Burial: 4 p.m. at Lawn Hill Cemetery, Stanhope. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service. Cedar Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Bernice is survived by her husband of 68 years, Earling H. Hanson; two sons, Norman Barbara Hanson of Danville, IL and Franklin Hanson of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Doris Irwin Hokel of Milford; 13 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; two nieces; and two nephews.

Bernice was preceded in death by a son Jerry Hanson of Dennison and a sister, Irene Leonard Strong.

Bernice was born March 6, 1914 in Boone to Albert and Ruth Soderstrom Johnson. She married Earling H. Hanson in 1937. They lived in Stanhope and Radcliffe before moving to Cedar Rapids. Bernice worked at Young Fashions for a number of years and following retirement she and Earling spent winters in Harlingen, TX. Bernice loved gardening, fishing, making crafts, and sewing quilts for missions. She was also an avid Iowa sports fan and loved being with her family and friends. We will all miss her.

Edward Joseph Hanna
Born in Sioux City on January 7, 1920
Departed on May 18, 2005. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Edward Joseph Hanna, 85, of 3850 Soutter Ct S.E. died Wednesday May 18, 2005 in Mercy Medical Center following a sudden illness. Services: 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. George Orthodox Church, where friends may call on Friday from 5-7 pm, with a Trisagion service at 7:00 p.m. Father Elias Khouri will officiate. Burial: St. George Cemetery. Turner East Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife Geraldine K. Hanna, a son, George Beth Hanna of Cedar Rapids, three daughters, Judy Phil Latessa of Des Moines, Gayle Mike Goodale of Cedar Rapids and Stephanie Venditelli Derek Brammer of Des Moines, two brothers, Jim Hanna, and Phil Katie Hanna, and a sister, Mae Hanna all of Sioux City, Iowa, five grandchildren, Alex and Luke Hanna, Grant Lenna Goodale, Greg Goodale and Clint Carole Curtis, and two great grandchildren, Carson and Cameron Goodale.
His parents and six siblings precede him in death.
Edward was born on January 7, 1920 in Sioux City, the son of Elias and Habooba Ellis Hanna. He married Geraldine K. Haddy on September 23, 1945 in Cedar Rapids. Edward was owner and operator of a restaurant and bar in the Cedar Rapids area. He was a life long member of St. George Orthodox Church and a member of the American Legion Hanford Post # 5. Edward was in the Army during World War II, serving in Africa and Italy in the 185 Field Artillery Red Bulls Division.
Memorials may be made to the St. George Cemetery fund in lieu of flowers.

Thurman C. Harris
Born in Blythedale, MO on March 30, 1924
Departed on May 10, 2005. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Thurman "Thurmy" C. Harris, 81, of 353 26th Street NW, died at Mercy Medical Center, Tuesday, May 10, 2005, after a long illness. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church by the Revs. Jonathan Offt and Parker Knoll. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery with military services. Friends may call at Turner West Funeral Home Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Survivors include his wife Grace; two sons, Robert Patricia Harris of Marion and Gregory Harris of Keystone; a daughter Sharon Don Drahn of Monona; two stepdaughters, Bonnie John Peal of Marion and Kris White of Corpus Christi, TX; a stepson Kevin Roxy Smith of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Iris Garland Waddilove of Cedar Rapids; seventeen grandchildren; an five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, a sister, a grandson, and his first wife.

Thurmy was born March 30, 1924 in Blythedale, MO to Charles and Grace Moore Harris. He retired in 1983 from Wilson Foods after over 40 years.
He sold Christmas trees for the Optimists for many years. He married Velma Rinderknecht in Davenport on February 19, 1947. She died in 1971. He married Grace Smith in Cedar Rapids on April 13, 1974.

Thurmy belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church, the VFW Post #788, the American Legion Hanford Post #5, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the 775th Tanker Association, and the Cedar Rapids Baseball Club. He was an Army veteran of WWII, serving in Europe and receiving a Purple Heart.

Thurman started in baseball at age 13. He was a batboy, a club house boy, groundskeeper, and a director on the Cedar Rapids Baseball Club. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000.

He was a great husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle. He will be missed by many.

Military services by the American Legion.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
