Merle T. Herdliska, 77, of 1650 Koehler Dr NW, died Saturday July 7, 2007 in St. Luke's Hospital following a long illness. Funeral Mass 10:00 AM Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church by the Rev. Nils Hernandez. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be today at Cedar Memorial-Westside Chapel from 4-7 p.m., where a rosary will be begin at 4pm.
Survivors include a sister in law, Doreen Eisentrager of Lincoln, Nebraska, a brother in law, Louis Shimon of Kansa City, Missouri, and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving is his pool partner, Don Johnson of Cedar Rapids and his friends from the Meth-Wick Community.
He was preceded in death by his wife Doris Herdliska, his parents, a sister, Eleanor, a brother, Gene and a sister, Patricia.
Merle was born March 7, 1930 in Holbrook, Iowa, the son of Elmer and Stella Donohue Herdliska. He married Doris Eisentrager on August 18, 1962 in Alvord, Iowa. Doris died in 2006. Merle was a Millwright for the Local Union 2158 and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He enjoyed pool in his spare time.
Memorials may be made to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and St. Luke's Hospice.

Keith E. Herington 88, of 1620 10th St. NW, died peacefully, Sunday, July 8, 2007, in his home following a short illness. Services at 1 PM Thursday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Pastor Tim Carter, Rev. Charles Keyes, and Dr. Forrest Whitlatch will officiate. Burial with military honors at Czech National Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday and at the chapel after 12:30 PM on Thursday.

A lifelong Cedar Rapids resident, Keith was born January 28, 1919 the son of Clark and Hazel Leach Herington. He married Verona Thomas on September 3, 1936 and they celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary with their family and friends last year. His family includes his wife Verona, two children Sharyl Kenneth Achilles of Cedar Rapids, and Dohn Sharon Herington of Mundelein, Il., his grandchildren are Mary Hawkins of Cedar Rapids, Tom Diane Achilles of Omaha, NE, and Marc Suzanne Herington of Rock Island, Il, his great-grandchildren are Dan Lesieur of Iowa City, Andy Lesieur of Cedar Rapids, Elizabeth Rob Cooley of Kearney, NE, and Lindsay Joy Herington of Rock Island, Il. Also survived by two sisters Joyce Henry Cole of Houston, Mo, and Vera Klumpar of Cedar Rapids, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters Edna, Helen, and Marjorie.

A member of the Iowa Chapter of the World War 2 Submariners, Keith served 3 years in the U.S. Submarine service. He served on the U.S.S. Bergall and was stationed in the South Pacific. He was Torpedoman 1st Class and was awarded the Commendation Medal for meritorious service in action.

He was a 50-year active member of the First Church of the Nazarene, serving in various capacities over the years. His faith and family were foremost in his life. He especially loved celebrating Christmas with his family.

Keith was employed by FMC Corp. for 36 years, retiring as the Night Superintendent.

He enjoyed being a member of the Good Earth Garden Club and raised over 50 kinds of roses in his yard. He also enjoyed feeding and watching the birds.

His family wishes to thank Amenity Hospice for their loving care and support.

He will be greatly missed by his family and dear friends.

Military honors will be provided by Hanford American Legion Post No 5.

Jay W. Hesser Jr.
Born in Iola, Kansas on May 1, 1925

Jay W. Hesser Jr. of 2131 1st Avenue SE, died Thursday afternoon, July 12 at Mercy Medical Center following a sudden illness. Services will be held Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories with Dr. Doug Miller of Noelridge Christian Church officiating. Inurnment will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. Military honors by the American Legion Hanford Post #5.
Jay is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gwen, a son, Doug Hesser and wife Marilyn of Midlothian, Virginia, two daughters, Karen Paris and husband Lynn of Casa Grande, Arizona, Sara Lamparek and husband Kevin of Swisher, Iowa, six grandchildren, Nick and Scott Lamparek, Andy Paris, Hannah, Matthew and Seth Hesser, two sisters, Kathryn Enright of Independence, Missouri and Margaret Listebarger of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Jay and his parents and Jay and Ella Hesser.
Jay was born May 1, 1925 in Iola, Kansas to Jay W. and Ella Thomas Hesser and moved to Cedar Rapids in 1929. He graduated from McKinley High School in 1943. Enlisted in the Navy in WW II where he served aboard an LST during the D-Day operation on Omaha Beach. After being discharged he attended the University of Iowa and graduated from the Kansas City College of Mortuary Science in 1949. He married Gwen Wren on December 29, 1948 at First Christian Church in Cedar Rapids. Jay was in partnership with his father at the Barta Hesser Funeral Home and the name changed to Hesser Memorial Chapel following the death of Jay Hesser Sr. This business was sold in 1969 and he was employed with Skogman Realty for 11 years. He then joined Teleconnect/MCI and retired from there in 1990. Jay was a 50 year member and Past Master of Crescent Lodge #25 AF&AM;, Iowa Consistory and El Kahir Shrine. He was a former member of the Exchange Club, Jaycees and Chamber of Commerce. He was an avid duplicate bridge player and played for many years in the local clubs and was a member of the ACBL. He loved fishing in Canada, bowling, golf and U of I football games. Memorial donations may be made to the Noelridge Christian Church, 7111 C Avenue NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402.

Mary Jane Robinson Horak

Mary Jane Robinson Horak, 90, a resident of the Meth-Wick Community for the past 5 years, died there Saturday, July 28, 2007, following a long illness. There will be no services. Inurnment in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.

Survivors include a son Robert F. Horak Jr. and wife Teresa of Coggon, and a granddaughter Sara Katherine Horak. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two sisters.

Mary Jane was born March 31, 1917 in Cedar Rapids to Christopher and Mary Easker Robinson. She married Robert F. Horak on July 31, 1938 in Cedar Rapids. He died July 19, 1996. She was a member of First Congregation Church for over 60 years, and a member of Chapter HJ of PEO for over 50 years.

Mary Jane was deeply indebted for the wonderful care she received from the staffs of Arbor Place, The Woodlands, St. Luke's Hospice, Dr. Tommy O'Brien, and nurse Erin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, American Heart Association, or to the organization of the donor's choice.

Dorothy Marie Henecke

Dorothy Marie Henecke, 93, of Cedar Rapids, died August 5, 2007 at Heritage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a short illness. Funeral Services 1:00 PM, Thursday, August 9, 2007, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Roland Oswald will officiate, assisted by Dr. Gary Henecke. Friends may call at the chapel after 12:00 PM Thursday. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include sons David L. Henecke and wife Jane of Palo, Iowa, and Dr. Gary A. Henecke and wife Raedean of Franklin, TN. Also surviving are grandchildren Brian Henecke and wife Deb of Cedar Rapids, Brad Henecke and wife Lorrie of Milliken, CO, Brett Henecke and wife Stacy of Ely; great grandchildren Kathryn and Noah; and her special cousin Dixie M. Bailey.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Laverne E. Rudd and Richard E. Rudd, and sister Bernice J. Warrington.

Dorothy Marie Henecke was born December 18, 1913 in Cedar Rapids, the beloved daughter of Elmer W. and Merle Jane Knight Rudd. She was a 50 year member of St. James United Methodist Church, a member of the church board and the Silver Club, taught Sunday school, and was a 29 year member of the ABWA. Prior to her retirement she was employed for 22 years at Armstrong's Department Store. She enjoyed gardening and being outdoors.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the memorial fund in Dorothy's name.

Kenneth Joseph Hagan
Born in Atkins, Iowa on September 28, 1913
Departed on August 7, 2007. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Kenneth Joseph Hagan, 93 of the Methwick community for five years in Cedar Rapids, died from a long illness at St. Luke's Hospital on Tuesday, August 7, 2007. Visitation will be Sunday, August 12, 2007 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel. Services will be Monday, August 13, 2007 at 11:00 AM at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Another visitation will begin prior to the funeral service at 10:00 AM on Monday at the Chapel of Memories. Reverend William Harnish will officiate the service. Burial will be at the Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in the Acacia section immediately following the funeral services. Masonic services provided by the Benton City Lodge No. 81.

Survivors are his wife of 66 years, Evelyn Hagan of Cedar Rapids; his sons, Dennis Hagan of Cedar Rapids, and Bill Hagan and wife Julie of Auckland, New Zealand; his grandchildren Anna Hagan and Tim Hagan of Auckland, New Zealand; sister, Hazel McClintock of Shellsburg; nephew, Don Hagan of Des Moines; niece, Jane Petersen of Galesburg, Illinois, and many special nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceding him in death were his parents, brother, Chester Hagan, and sister, Gladys Kempf.

Kenneth was born on September 28, 1913 on the family farm near Atkins, Iowa to Joseph and Minnie Beatty Hagan. He began his education at the nearby Dry Creek School. He later graduated from Shellsburg High School. The schoolhouse was later converted to his first home after his marriage. In 1934 Kenneth graduated from Iowa State University with a BS degree in industrial engineering.

On August 22, 1941 he was united in marriage with Evelyn L. Risdale at the Westminister Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. Kenny farmed for much of his life in partnership with his brother Chester. He was also a director at the Atkins Savings Bank from 1944 until 2002. He also served as president and chairman of the board. He derived much satisfaction from both activities.

Kenneth was a member of the Atkins Presbyterian Church and later the Hus Presbyterian Church.

He was also a Mason with the Benton City Lodge No. 81 in Shellsburg, Iowa.

Kenny was the third Hagan to marry a Risdale sister. Previously Chester married Mabel Risdale followed by his cousin Charles' marriage to LaVerne Risdale..
