Scott Heck, 41, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, May 17, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center. Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may visit after 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel.

Survivors include his significant other, Kris Leesekamp; parents, Rosemary (Don) Brown of Marion and Bill (Diane) Heck of Cedar Rapids; brother, Andrew Heck of Cedar Rapids; sister, Amy (Chuck) Bronder and their daughter, McKenzie of Mt. Prospect, IL.; and his special feline dependents.

Scott was a very talented artist and loved music – adept at playing several instruments. He liked to garden, both indoor and outdoor plants.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

Kathryn D Hoffner Smith
Born in Morse, Iowa on November 5, 1912
Departed on May 20, 2009. Resided in Hiawatha, Iowa.

Kathryn D. Hoffner Smith, 96, of the Hiawatha Care Center in Hiawatha died there on Wednesday May 20, 2009 after a short illness. Services at 1:00 PM on Tuesday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Fritz Melberg will officiate. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 2 to 4 PM on Monday.

Survivors include a son, James (Garnet) Hoffner of Cedar Rapids. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Jodi Schultz and two great grandchildren, Amanda and Rachel. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, six brothers and three sisters.

Kathryn was born on Nov. 5, 1912 in Morse, Iowa the daughter of Charles and Anna Zenishek Dvorsky. She married Edward A. Hoffner on May 9, 1936 in Missouri. He died in 1960. She later married Frank W. Smith on Feb. 15, 1964 in Iowa City. He died in 1973. Kathryn worked at Northwestern Bell and retired from there after more than 21 years of service. She was a faithful member of Hope United Church of Christ and the Telephone Pioneers Club. She enjoyed crafts, crocheting afghans and especially time spent with her beloved family.

Memorial donations may be given to Hope United Church of Christ in Kathryn’s name.

Robert Smith Holding
Born in Green Bay, Wisconsin on January 6, 1930
Departed on May 21, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA, Iowa.

Robert Smith Holding, 79, of Cedar Rapids, was welcomed home May 21, 2009 after a short illness. Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Jonathon Offt of Trinity Lutheran Church will officiate. Friends may call from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Inurnment will take place in Oxford Junction, Iowa.

Surviving are his wife Marjorie; daughter Heidi Larsen and husband Scott of Cedar Rapids; his grandchildren Thomas and Sidney Larsen; brother Don Holding and wife Marilyn of Madison, WI; as well as 6 nieces and 3 nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.

Robert Smith Holding was born January 6, 1930 in Green Bay, WI the son of Paul and Hazel (Smith) Holding. He attended the University of Wisconsin –Green Bay for 2 years, and graduated from DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago. He later moved to Cedar Rapids. He was united in marriage to Marjorie L. Pegariek on May 25, 1957 in Cedar Rapids and they had a wonderful life together for almost 52 years. He was employed for 35 years as a lab technician at Rockwell Collins. He lived a full life and made many friends who touched his heart. Those that knew him were regaled with stories of his life and it is the family’s hope that those stories will be fondly remembered and continued to be retold in honor of this great man.

In lieu of flowers, Robert’s family requests donations by made to The Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.

Vivian L. Hayes
Born in Decorah on August 8, 1924
Departed on June 2, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Vivian L. Hayes, 84, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully, Tuesday, June 2, 2009. Services: 1 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by Linda Stavropoulos. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Friday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel from 5 to 8 p.m. with a vigil service beginning at 5 p.m. Arrangements are entrusted to Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon (Larry) Hunt of Palo, and Kathleen (Ron) Young of Houston; sister, Esther Bigler; grandchildren, Theresa Hunt-Bayati, Samantha Young, and Stephanie Young; great grandchildren, Megan, and Jadence. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leonard; brothers, Kenneth, Earl, Anton, and Lester; and sisters, Mildred and Loyise.

Mimi was born September 8, 1924 in Decorah to Lars and Isabelle Larson. She married Leonard Hayes. He died in 2008. She loved playing cards, bingo, dancing, and attending Milestones. She liked country music, Valentine’s Day, and spending time with her great granddaughter, Megan.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Earl E. Hoffman, 89, of Marion, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died June 2, 2009 at Crestview Acres following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, June 5, 2009 at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. William B. Harnish will officiate. Friends may call from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Thursday, June 4, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife Doris; his children Lee Hoffman and wife Patti of Greenwood, WI, Shirley Dodds of Lincoln, NE, Buddy L. Hoffman of Cedar Rapids, and Carol Farar and husband Larry of Cedar Rapids; also surviving are his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Michael, brothers Alvin and Howard, and sisters Dorothy Carter and Margaret Smith.

Earl Ernest Hoffman was born October 25, 1919 in Tipton, the son of George and Sible (Wilson) Hoffman. He was united in marriage to Doris E. Ford on February 2, 1938 in Cedar Rapids, a marriage of 71 years. He was a farmer for several years, and then worked in assembly at Iowa Manufacturing for 24 years. Following his retirement he then cleaned for the Cedar Rapids Water Department until the age of 81. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Hospice of Mercy for their care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Earl’s name may be made to Hospice of Mercy.

Lorna J. Hazewinkel
Born in Cedar Rapids, IA on December 2, 1932

Lorna J. Hazewinkel, 76, of Marion, IA died Friday, June 12, 2009 at Mercy Hospital, Cedar Rapids following a lingering illness.

Services: 11:00 AM Monday, June 15, 2009 at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids. Rev. Mr. Dan Hoeger officiating. Visitation will be held from 2:00 – 5:00 pm Sunday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Herbert of Marion; Children, Herbert Hazewinkel Jr. (Mary) of Peosta, Kathy Jayne (Mark) of Marion, Michael Hazewinkel (Karen) of Cedar Rapids; Mother, Marjorie Foubert of Cedar Rapids; Sister, Loretta Shearer of Kansas City, MO; Larry Foubert (Marcia) of Fairfax. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren, Diane Edwards, Rob Hazewinkel, Chad Jayne, Chris Jayne, Justin Caldwell, Eric Caldwell and 6 great grandchildren, Natalie Hazewinkel, Elliot Hazewinkel, Ryan Caldwell, Tyler & Travis Caldwell & Austin Caldwell.

Lorna was preceded in death by her father, John, daughter, Diane Lee Hazewinkel in infancy.

Lorna J. Foubert was born December 2, 1932 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of John & Marjorie (Montgomery) Foubert. She married Herbert J. Hazewinkel on July 30, 1950 in Cedar Rapids. She had worked as an Assistant Activities Director at Willow Gardens Care Center, Marion. Lorna loved baking and won many blue ribbons at the Iowa State Fair, enjoyed her candy making classes she took in Minnesota, sewing, especially making quilts, enjoyed putting puzzles together and her true expertise was being a “Mom”.

Memorials may be sent in her name to National Kidney Foundation, 2800 University Ave. Ste 141, West Des Moines, IA 50266-1260.
