NOEL EDWIN HOGUE, also known well as Ed Hogue, 92, died Thursday August 11, 2011, after losing his thirty year battle with congestive heart failure. He was born on May 30, 1919 in Fort Worth, Texas and was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Maude Hogue of Fayetteville Arkansas, a brother and sister in law, A.J. Hogue and Etta Osborne Hogue of Fort Worth Texas, and a sister and brother in law, Alice Hogue Moore and Jack Moore of White Settlement Texas.
Ed is survived by his wife, Harriett Ann Hogue of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, son and daughter in law Noel Charles Hogue and Debra Sue Paulsen-Hogue of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and a sister Esther Mae Holley of Goodell, Michigan.
Ed spent four years in the United States Air Corps during World War II and was eventually stationed at Truax Field in Madison, Wisconsin. While stationed at Truax Field he met and married
Harriett Ann Keyes on January 1, 1943. Following his honorary military discharge Ed attended the University of Wisconsin Madison, graduating with high honors with a degree in Electrical Engineering including an option in Atomic Physics.
Following graduation Ed was employed by Collins Radio Company in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, working there for thirty-three years. In 1976 Ed was honored with the Engineer of the Year award for the Collins Radio division of Rockwell International. Ed spent the last eighteen years of his employment at Rockwell Collins as the head of an Advanced Technology Group. Ed retired on December 31, 1982.
Ed was a longtime member of Kenwood Park Presbyterian Church which has relocated and is now known as Echo Hill Presbyterian Church. Ed was a kind, generous, and wonderful husband, father, and friend to many, and he will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. A memorial service with military rites will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories where friends may call after 12:30 PM. Rev. Bill Warhover will officiate. Inurnment at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family asks that instead of flowers, donations be sent to Echo Hill Presbyterian Church.
Vallie Hansel

Vallie “Jay” Hansel, 74, of Cedar Rapids, passed away in his home on August 17, 2011 following a brief illness. Services will be held on Monday, August 22, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include his daughter Joleen (Gene) Jaremczuk of St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin; a son Scott (Susan) Hansel of Simpsonville, South Carolina; seven grandchildren, Brooke, Alana, Ryan, Austin, Arrien, Hayley, and Dylan; and three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Betty Kay Hansel and parents.
Jay was born on January 22, 1937 the son of Delbert and Sophie (Buhrmann) Hansel. In 1955, he enlisted and served in the U.S. Army for 4 years. He was assigned to the 101st Air Borne as paratrooper. Following the service he was united in marriage to Betty Kay Christopherson on April 30, 1960 in Decorah, Iowa. Jay had been employed by the City of Cedar Rapids, Harnischfeger and Linn County. He was a loving father, grandfather, and friend who will be dearly missed by all knew and loved him

Arlene Hughes, 88, of Marion, died Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at St. Luke’s Hospital. Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Marion Christian Church by the Rev. Peter Mitchell. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. and after 10 a.m. Monday at the church.
Arlene is survived by her children, Nancy (Mariamne Whatley)Worcester of Madison, WI and Diane Hughes of Stoughton, WI and Leonard (Deb) Hughes of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, David, Victoria, and Samantha Hughes, and Thomas Maxwell; great grandchildren, Collin, Kylee, Kristin and Rylee; and special friends, Betty and June. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arling; brothers, Roy and Howard Guzzle; and sister, Harmie Knouf.
Arlene was born February 2, 1923 in Marion to Charles and Christine Gooley Guzzle. She was a graduate of Marion High School and Cedar Rapids Business College. She worked in the purchasing department of LaPlant Choate Mfg. Co., the State Soil conservation office and as secretary to the principal at Bowman Woods School in Marion. Arlene wrote a column called “Sugar and Spice” for the Marion Times for many years. Arlene was state president and served on the national board for Iowa Association of Educational Secretaries for schools, colleges, and universities. She also served on the Linn County Health Improvement Board and was a charter member of Brucemore where she gave tours. She was one of the first women to serve as an Elder at Marion Christian Church where she was a lifetime member.

Peter Christian Hoech, 40, was called home by his Heavenly Father on August 18, following a long illness. Visitation is Friday, August 26, from 4 to 7 PM at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Saturday, August 27, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids. Rev. Dr. Randy Nord will officiate.
Peter was a committed Christian who truly lived his faith. His thoughtfulness, caring and selfless generosity touched many lives.
Limited means and physical challenges diminished neither his sense of humor nor the joy he found in serving God by helping others. His departure leaves a great void in the lives of those privileged to have known him.
Born in Cedar Rapids, where he lived most of his life, Peter was a graduate of Trinity Lutheran School, of Kennedy High School, and of Kirkwood Community College. He most recently was employed as a media technician for Images Productions, an affiliate of Sound Concepts, Inc. Previously he had worked for MCI, Parsons Technology, and McLeod USA. Among his hobbies were music (trombone), photography, model railroading, playing Scrabble, and rooting for his beloved St. Louis Cardinals.
Peter is survived by his wife of 15 years, Kathlene Hoech (nee Cook), by his father Gary Hoech, brother Karl, sister-in-law Janet, niece Annest, the Treptow family – Dian, Dave, Stephanie, Shannon, Stacie, and Scott – all of Cedar Rapids, and by many aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Shari Hoech, and by his grandparents Carl Peterson, Harold Turner and Jennie Peterson Turner of Momence, IL, and Fred and Dorothea Hoech of Saint Louis, MO.

JoAnne B. Hedlin
Born in Grand Forks, North Dakota on July 20, 1929
Departed on October 18, 2011. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
JoAnne B. Hedlin, 82, formerly of Bemidji, Minnesota and Marco Island, Florida died at Northbrook Manor on Tuesday October 18, 2011 after an extended illness. Private family memorial services will be held at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven J. Knudson officiating. Inurnment in Bemidji will be at a later date. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her husband Warren, a resident of Keystone Cedars, a daughter Anne (Philip) Lenzen of Cedar Rapids; a son Andy (Joyce) of Marshall, Minnesota and a brother Paul Bridston of Bemidji, Minnesota. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Sofie, Gunnar and Erik Lenzen and Sameh and Ta’mia Hedlin. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Keith.
JoAnne was born on July 20, 1929 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the daughter of Joseph and Anna Pederson Bridston. She graduated from the University of North Dakota and was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority. She also received a post graduate degree in business from Radcliffe College.
JoAnne married
Warren A. Hedlin on May 28, 1954 in Grand Forks. She was a homemaker and later worked for the American Lutheran Church at their headquarters in Minneapolis for several years.
JoAnne was a member of First Lutheran Church in Bemidji, P.E.O and Attic Angels. She also was the past president of the Alumni Board for four years at the University of North Dakota where she received the distinguished Sioux Award. JoAnne enjoyed gardening cooking, entertaining and instilled in her family the spiritual qualities of life. She and Warren loved downhill skiing and their summer lake home in Bemidji with their family. Her charm, style and excitement for life was an inspiration not only to her family, but also to her many friends.

Lavonne Hamilton, 84, of 1800 Chandler Street SW died
Wednesday October 19, 2011 after a long illness. Services at 11:00 AM on Thursday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Jim Goodrich will officiate. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 7 PM on Wednesday.
Survivors include her husband, James, two sons, Thomas (Maria) of Cedar Rapids and Mark (Karen) of Albuquerque of New Mexico; two brothers, Bill (Carol) Garrett, Dick (Ann) Garrett and two sisters, Wanda Lear and Shirley (Bob) Morgan. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Joshua, David, Rachel, Ben, Jim, Michael and Sam. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a daughter, Geri Feltz.
Lavonne was born on June 4, 1927 in South English, the daughter of Roe and Cuma Neilson Garrett. She married
James M. Hamilton on April 17, 1949 in Marion. Lavonne was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church-Church of the Brethren later the Church on Northland. She also was a member of the Dorcas Circle and enjoyed working with the group making quilts for charity.
Lavonne loved a sunny day with the birds singing, spending time with family, quilting and crocheting. She was a joy to her family and friends and will be greatly missed and remembered with love.
