Stella Mae Hedgecoth, 84, of 3740 F Ave. NE died Tuesday April 6, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center after a brief illness. Services at 11:00 Am on Friday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Thursday.

Survivors include two sons, Dale (Beverly) of Cedar Rapids and Norman of Platteville, Wisconsin, one sister, Ruth Heron of Woodway, Virginia and two brothers, Allan (Rosemary) Young of Springfield, Missouri and L.B. (Audrey) Young of Knoxville, Tennessee. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Cara, Jason, Katie, Andrea and John; 16 great grandchildren; special friends, Karl and Marlene Sibert and Cindy Miller. She was preceded in death by her husband, and two grandchildren, Joel and Robert.

Stella was born on May 6, 1925 in Lee County, Virginia, the daughter of Albert and Roxie Patrick Young. After graduating from High School Stella worked on the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee from 1943 to 1945 helping to build the atomic bomb. She married Kenneth O. Hedgecoth on March 8, 1947 in St. Charles, Virginia. He died in 1968. Stella was a test operator at Collins for 30 years, retiring in 1982. While employed at Collins she helped build the communications equipment for the Apollo Space program. She enjoyed shopping with her granddaughters and was said to have a green hand when it came to gardening, especially with the beautiful flowers she grew. “The family would like to give a special thanks to the doctors and staff at Mercy Medical Center for the loving care given to Stella.”

Memorial donations may be given to the Children’s Hospital at the University of Iowa in Stella’s name.

Edna F. Rose Hanrahan
Born in Bismarck, N.D. on January 24, 1927
Departed on April 6, 2010. Resided in Bismarck, North Dakota.

Edna F. Hanrahan, 83, long time Cedar Rapids resident, passed peacefully to her eternal reward at her home in her hometown of Bismarck, ND last week on Tuesday morning. Mrs. Hanrahan resided in Cedar Rapids from 1957 to 1991 where the former member of St. Matthews Church and her late husband Don raised 6 children.

Born in 1927 in Bismarck and a 1945 graduate of Bismarck’s St. Mary’s High, the former Edna Florence Rose was the third of three children born to Edgar and Nell Rose. Edna was preceded in death by her beloved sweet parents, her older brother Ed Rose, Ed’s wife Marilyn Rose, her brother-in-law Leonard Gustafson, her husband Don Hanrahan, and her daughter Patricia Hanrahan. Her older sister Elizabeth Rose Gustafson survives and is a resident of Missouri Slope retirement home in Bismarck.

Survivors include oldest twin son Mark and Diane Hanrahan of Cedar Rapids and San Antonio, Texas, Ann Dorr of Cedar Rapids, and five sons Colin, Ryan, Sean, Brendan, and Keaton, all of Cedar Rapids. Twin son Michael and Linda Hanrahan reside in Newport Beach, California with sons Brian (Austin, Tx) and Brett and daughters Brooke and Brittany. Third son Don and his wife Teresa Hanrahan reside in Austin, Texas with their children Sarah and Matthew. Daughter Coleen Hanrahan resides in Amsterdam, the Netherlands with daughter Sahar and son Rakhshan. And the youngest child, Carol Hanrahan Hoff and her husband David Hoff reside in Valrico, Florida with daughters Kate and Olivia.

Edna earned a BS in Nursing from Creighton University. She met and married Don J. Hanrahan, originally of Fort Dodge, Iowa, while living and working in Denver, Colorado as a Med Tech after the War. Don and Edna resided in Denver, Colorado, St. Louis, Missouri, and then Evansville, Indiana before settling in Cedar Rapids in 1957 where they raised their six children, five surviving. Edna also had 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Edna moved from Cedar Rapids back to her hometown of Bismarck a few years after the death of Mr. Hanrahan in 1985. Edna enjoyed bridge clubs, her bowling friends and reading. Edna volunteered time for meals on wheels here in Cedar Rapids. Edna also liked to travel, especially to Ireland the home of her ancestors and also loved spending her summers at her lake home in Delhi, Iowa. Edna loved the Catholic Church, was very proud of being Irish, and adored her parents, her husband Don and her children.

Lester William Haerther
Born in rural Atkins, Iowa on March 26, 1923
Departed on March 24, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Lester William Haerther, 86, of Cedar Rapids, passed away from complications of pulmonary disease at his home on March 24, 2010 with his loving family nearby. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, March 29, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Rev. Jonathon Offt will officiate. Friends may call from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday, March 28, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Private burial will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife Irene; children Sandra Siepman and husband Steve of St. Louis, MO, Diane Haynor and husband Charles of St. Paul, MN, Dr. Steve Haerther and wife Sue of Chatsworth, CA, and David Haerther of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren Katie and Tom Siepman, Ben Haynor and spouse Charlsie, John and Nate Haynor, and Cody and Casey Haerther; a brother Duane Haerther and wife Marguerite of Lincoln, NE; sister Verda Haerther of Atkins; as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and 3 infant sisters.

Les was born March 26, 1923 in rural Atkins the son of C.W. and Marie M. (Fox) Haerther. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy during WWII. He married Irene M. Pingel on September 26, 1945 in Keystone, Iowa. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1950 with membership in the Tau Beta Pi and Phi Tau Sigma honors fraternities. He was employed for over 40 years as an engineer at Rockwell Collins, retiring in 1982. Following retirement he was involved with Rockwell Collins Retirees and Volunteers organization, as well as the REACT organization that refurbished computers for use in schools. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he was involved with the men’s chorus, and was a past member of the Trinity Lutheran School Board. He was also a member of the VFW, and Boy Scouts of America. He was honored with the Governor’s Award for Volunteer Services. Les enjoyed woodworking, electronics, home improvement, and completing creative projects for family and friends. He will forever be remembered as being able to fix anything.

Les lived a quiet, generous, and humble life of service to his Lord, his family, his friends, and to the many people who benefited from his volunteer work.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church – Organ Fund, or to a charity of the donor’s choosing.

Ruth E. Hargrave
Born in Dickenson County, IA on October 9, 1929

Ruth E. Hargrave, 80, a resident of Meadow View assisted living died there Wednesday March 18, 2010. Services: 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Mark Reasnor will officiate. Visitation will be today at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5-8:00 p.m.

Survivors include her children, Richard Hargrave of Sandusky, Ohio, Michael Hargrave of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Leonard Hargrave and wife Barbara of Falls Church, Virginia, Roxanne Hargrave of Marion, Iowa and Douglas Hargrave of Cedar Rapids, her siblings, Rose Mathieson of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Andy Drexler of Roanoke, Virginia, and Diana Lindsay of Okoboji, Iowa, her grandchildren, Dustin Hargrave and wife Mescha and Vincent Hargrave all of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Raelen Hargrave of Richmond, Virginia and Mackenzie Hargrave of Marion, Iowa, and great-grandchildren, Jacob Hargrave of Beacon, Iowa, Bethany Hargrave and Tanner Carver all of Oskaloosa, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Virgil, three sisters, DarleneThomas, Pauline Kirsch, Betty Drexler and a brother, John Drexler.

Ruth was born October 9, 1929 in Dickenson County, Iowa, the daughter of John and Bessie Drexler. She married Virgil R. Hargrave on May4, 1948 in Sacred Heart Church in Spencer, Iowa. Ruth worked as a waitress for Hillcrest Country Club. She was a member of
St. Johns Catholic Church, Mt. Vernon, Hillcrest Country Club, and Cedar Rapids Bowling Hall of Fame. She loved golf, traveling and
bowling, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a youth Bowling instructor and was President of the Cedar Rapids Bowling
Association for 15 years and bowled in 25 National Bowling
Tournaments.

Memorials may be made to Iowa Hospice, 800 First Ave NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402

Dorothy Irene Harman
Born in Mt. Auburn, Iowa on May 15, 1919
Departed on March 14, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Dorothy I. Harman, 90, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, March 14, 2010 at Manor Care. Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel by Chaplain Phil Saunders. Interment: Oak Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be held Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. and after 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Survivors include her son, Richard; nephew, Harold (Linda) Bruce; and niece, Joyce Rogers. She was preceded in death by her parents; spouse, Clarence; sisters, Violet, Evelyn, and Jenny; and brothers, Roger and Alford.

Dorothy was born May 15, 1919 in Mt. Auburn to George and Florence (Welton) Lane. They moved to LaPorte City and later to Cedar Rapids. She attended Roosevelt High School. She married Clarence Harman on June 19, 1943 in Cedar Rapids. He died in 1968. Dorothy worked at Souvenir Pen and Pencil Company and later worked at Collins Radio Company during WWII. She took a year off after the birth of her son and then returned, working for 30 more years and then retiring. She was a past member of the IBEW #1362.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Geraldine Blanche Houston
Born in Chicago, IL on April 17, 1937
Departed on March 13, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Geraldine Blanche Houston, 72, died March 13, 2010 following a brief illness. A memorial in celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Geri is survived by her four children, Deb (Brad) Novak of Marion, Iowa; Cindi (Craig) Hazel of Seattle, Washington, James (Laura) Houston Jr. of Plano, Texas and Karen (John) Randall of Cincinnati, Ohio, nine grandchildren and a sister.

Geri was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Geri was born April 17, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois. Before retiring, she had most recently been employed with J.E. Adams Industries and then Wal-Mart. Geri enjoyed ceramics, being with her friends in the Red Hat Society and playing bingo. The time that she treasured most was the time she was able to spend with her family. She is loved and will be missed by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the St. Luke’s Pallitive Care.
