His wife of 54 years, Betty Ellen Jenkins preceded him in death, April 2002.

Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Ethel and Thomas Maloney of Manahawkin, NJ; his sister Elizabeth Petryszn of Anderson, SC. His nieces and nephews William Maloney of Manahawkin NJ, Patricia Maloney of Wilton, NH, Betty Maloney of Newark NJ, June Souviron, M.D. of Anderson SC. Peter Petryszn of Gafney, SC, Cindy Quail of Hagerstown MD, Debbie Oler of Greenwich, Conn. and Bill Brown of Woodinville WA, 13 grand nieces and nephews and many cousins in the Cedar Rapids area.

Bill was born December 16, 1914 in New York City and spent his entire youth in Bound Brook, New Jersey. The NJ Star-Ledger recently honored him as one of the top ten high school track stars of the 1930s. In high school, he was the NJ State Mile Champion for two years and held the NJ State Half Mile championship three consecutive years. Bill attended Iowa State Teacher's College University of Northern Iowa where he achieved All-American status in 1939 along with the honor of 1939 athlete of the year at UNI. In 1939, he established the Iowa Teacher's College all-time record for both one and two mile run and was voted track athlete of decade 1943-52 by the college. His accomplishments at his college earned him the title 'Seabiscuit'. His former coach, Arthur Dickinson once described him as 'the benchmark by which to measure college athletes'.

His attendance at college was interrupted by army service in the Pacific during World War II.

Bill retired from Cryovac after 27 years of service. Prior to moving to Iowa, he was employed by the Elizabeth Fire Dept. He was a charter member of Noelridge Christian Church and served on the Board of Deacons and the Property Committee. He took great pride in organizing church work projects and especially in his role as Greeter. His certificate as 'Best Handshakes' was just as important to him as the numerous medals and trophies that he received.

Bill Jenkins had a particular love of children. He was a surrogate father to many. In 1983, he used his talents in track as a volunteer coach to help Franklin Jr. High win the Cedar Rapids Junior High Championship. To the students, he stressed that there is a great deal more responsibility in being an athlete than winning. He taught them that team support and self discipline were the greatest rewards from athletic competition. Bill Jenkins was a devoted husband, uncle and good neighbor. He will be missed by his family, church members, friends and all the caregivers that assisted him during his illness.

Having spent his youth running through the fields and parks of New Jersey, he understood the need for all children to have that opportunity.

Therefore, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to: Camp Courageous of Iowa for children, 12007 190th St., P.O. Box 418, Monticello, Iowa 52310-0418.
