Carole F. Jamieson
Born in Rochester, New York on February 8, 1953
Departed on September 12, 2004. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.
Visitation: Tuesday, September 14, 2004
Service: Wednesday, September 15, 2004
The music has now stopped and Carole F. Jamieson's grace filled waltz with breast cancer has ended after six and a half years. Born in Rochester, New York in 1953, she married
W. Scott Jamieson in 1982 on a snowy, January morning in that city. Her happiest day though was when her son, Parker Stewart, was born in 1990 in Annapolis, Maryland.
Carole moved to Cedar Rapids from Atlanta in 1996 and quickly found a warm community rich with friends, opportunities and developed a profound sense of purpose. It was here that she became an outspoken advocate for children and education, and was a foster mother to two children. She was the health secretary for the Johnson School of the Arts on the city's southeast side for the past seven years, international mother to 10 high school exchange students from Italy, Germany, Poland, Brazil and Uruguay. She co-led a student summer cultural camp to eastern Poland in 2000 and played host to a Polish student group the following summer. She was a 2002 recipient of the Nine Who Care Award sponsored by KCRG TV and was scheduled to receive the Governor's Volunteer Award for Outstanding Contributions to Education this fall. She was the immediate past president of the city PTA and had been an active member in both the Johnson and McKinley Middle School groups,
But her enduring legacy will be best remembered as her nearly boundless energy, clarity of justice and decency, spirit filled compassion, limitless kindness to others, and an insatiable love for her son, husband, sister, brother, nieces and nephews, in-laws and friends. She was one of the few who had the remarkable and fearless ability to "walk the talk." Nowhere was her example of strength, courage, persistence and life affirming attitude more evident than in the graceful manner in which she handled the long progression of breast cancer.
She will be thought of often in the days and years ahead by all who knew her, by all whose lives she touched and by all whose lives were enriched by her words and her actions. She was an inspiring example of a life well lived, a candle that burned brightly and completely and yet not nearly long enough by our human standards.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 15, at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories with Rev. Thelma J. Hembroff of Unity of Cedar Rapids and Chaplin Michael Murray of St. Luke's Hospice officiating. Friends may gather at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 14. Rather than flowers the family welcomes any contribution to the Carole F. Jamieson Spirit Scholarship at Washington High School that will be presented annually to a student whose approach to life most closely parallels that of Carole's.
