John Arthur Knupp, 91, of Marion, formerly of Central City, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 20, 2013. Funeral services will be at 11 AM on Saturday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories with Pastor Terry Hamilton and Pastor Michael Kleeberger officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM on Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

John was born September 26, 1921 in Vinton, Iowa to Adam C. and Hannorah McMahon Knupp. He attended country school through eight grade and later graduated from Vinton High School. Then he and his parents moved to a farm just west of Waubeek where he farmed with his father for a few years.

John was united in marriage to Martha Ellen Davis of Central City on February 12, 1944 at Jordan’s Grove Baptist Church. Soon thereafter John’s parents retired to California. John and Martha continued to operate the farm where they raised three children and entertained many grandchildren before moving to Marion in 2001. Martha preceded John in death on November 7, 2012.

Survivors include his son, John (Leann) and daughters, Sharon Henson (Stanley) and Sandra Childers (James), one sister Frances Carns (Harry-deceased), one sister-in-law Charlotte Knupp (Howard-deceased), grandchildren John Allen Knupp (Kristi), Dorene Hickey (Kevin), Jason Knupp (Debbie), Janice Crow (Steve), Scott Henson, Seth Henson (Christy), Daniel Childers (Andrea), Rebecca Barber (Jonathan), and David Childers (Ashley), as well as seventeen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, John was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson-in-law Jeffrey Holderman (Dorene) as well as three brothers: Warren (Phyllis-deceased), James (Sylvia-deceased) and Howard (Charlotte).

John’s farmed his entire life and also worked at Collins Radio Company in Cedar Rapids for twenty-seven years. He was a longtime member of Squaw Creek Baptist Church in Marion. John served as treasurer and deacon at the church as well as Sunday School teacher and Junior Youth leader. John loved children and was a favorite uncle to all of his nieces and nephews. His children and grandchildren have fond memories of his games of fox-an-geese, his snow forts and hay forts, his bonfires and cookouts, and the tree houses and play houses he so lovingly constructed for them.

John’s favorite memories centered on the 20 winters he and Martha spent in Zephyrhills, Florida, after John retired from Collins. There they enjoyed many fun activities with family and friends such as picnics in state parks, outings with church friends, taking visiting, grandchildren to the beach or to the attractions, having friends in for meals, riding trikes, and playing rousing games of dominos, Scrabble, or Five Crowns.

John’s family wishes to express our gratitude to the St. Luke’s Hospice and the caring employees at Summit Pointe Senior Living Center.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family of John Arthur Knupp.

Berdiva A. Klegseth
Born in Spring Grove, Minnesota on November 2, 1920
Departed on March 22, 2013. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Berdiva A. Klegseth, 92, a resident of Living Center East died there on Friday March 22, 2013 after a long illness. Services at 11:00AM on Wednesday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Osborne of Camanche and Debra (Les) Eggers of Marion, ; two sons Conrad (Mona) of New Orleans and Kenneth of Fountain, Colorado and one brother David (Lynn) Folkedahl of El Paso, Texas. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren, many great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter Beverly, granddaughter Monica and a great granddaughter Samantha.

Berdiva was born on November 2, 1920 in Spring Grove, Minnesota the daughter of Knute and Clarissa Mestad Folkedahl. She married Olaf G. Klegseth on July 30, 1937 in Spring Grove, Minnesota. He died in 1974. Berdiva was a dept. manager at Sears for over 12 years retiring in 1972.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Cedar Valley Rock and Mineral Society. Berdiva was a very talented artist and participated in the Witwer Center Art Program. She enjoyed reading, studying the bible and especially the time spent with her beloved family and friends. Her memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved her.

Memorial donations may be given to First Lutheran Church.

George Byron Kibler
Born in Marengo, Iowa on August 22, 1921
Departed on March 24, 2013. Resided in Hiawatha, Iowa.

George Byron Kibler, 91, of Hiawatha Care Center, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died March 24, 2013 at St Luke’s Hospital after a brief illness. Services will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Bob Voels officiating. Visitation will be an hour before beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial with full military honors will follow the funeral services.

George was born August 22, 1921 in Marengo, Iowa to George T. Kibler and Frances J. Cronbaugh Kibler. On Dec 13, 1941 George married Wilma Ida Margretz. They had two sons, George (Pat) and Ronald (Paula Ann). George is also survived by five granddaughters, Kristine (Russ) Morgan, Kimberly (Paul) Hook, Angela (Gordon) Merritt, Melissa (Chris) Mashek, and Megan Kibler and friend Jason Cepaitis; thirteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one brother Philip Kibler and friend Cheryl Aitker, two sisters Phylis Shedenhelm, and Elizabeth Stanerson and many nieces and nephews.

George proudly served his country in the in the Navy during World War II. He was honorably discharged Dec. 1944. George was a member of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.

George retired from Quaker Oats after more than 30 years of devoted service.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, brother, and uncle.

The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care given to George by Hiawatha Care Center, the staff of St. Luke’s Hospital 5th floor. A special thanks to Dr. Mary Anne Nelson.

A general memorial fund has been established.

Marie Marcella Kelty
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on December 21, 1915
Departed on September 24, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Marie Marcella Kelty, 94, a lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids died Friday, September 24, 2010 at the Oldorf Hospice House, Hiawatha of natural complications of old age.

The will be no visitation or service. Her body has been cremated. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Marie was the manager of Fanny Farmer Candies in the Paramount Building for 25 years, earning many awards and citations for her excellence.

She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Paul J. Kelty, a niece and her husband, Lana and Richard McBride of Naples, Florida and a nephew, George Blazek of Chicago, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mollie Blazek.

Kenneth M. Kaness
Born in Boone, Iowa on June 13, 1932
Departed on October 1, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Kenneth Marvin Kaness, 78, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 1, 2010.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 7, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Faith and Life Center in Marion, officiated by Rev. Perry Fruhling. Graveside service with military honors will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel and after 9:30 a.m. at the church on Thursday.

Ken was born on June 13, 1932, in Boone, Iowa, the son of Pearl O. and Sadie Irene (Torkelson) Kaness. Ken graduated from Boone High School in 1950, and attended AIB in Des Moines. Ken served actively in the Navy from 1953 to 1955, and in the reserves until 1957. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1958. On June 15, 1958, Kenny was united in marriage with Mary Ellen (Simmons) in Bonaparte, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mary Ellen; sons Paul of Cedar Rapids, and David of Richardson, TX; daughter Sue Ellen and son-in-law Todd Stelling of Cedar Rapids; grandson Austin Hansen of Richmond, VA; grandson Kyle Kaness of Cedar Rapids; granddaughter Payton Stelling and grandson Ryker Stelling, also of Cedar Rapids; cousin Louise McKeever of Crystal Lake, IL; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth Calvert of Elgin, IL; Glenn and Margaret Louise Heald of Auxvasse, MO; and Alfred and Frances Jolliffe of Waukee, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Tom and Jerry in infancy, and James; stepfather Andrew Frelund; mother- and father-in-law, Dorothy and George Simmons; brother-in-law, Leo Calvert; and sister-in-law, Myrna Jeanne Kreiger; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

After graduation, Ken worked at Link-Belt Speeder/FMC as a cost accountant for 27 years, retiring in 1985. He then worked at LeFebure, Norand, Goss, and J.E. Adams, retiring for a second time in 1998.

Ken was most proud to coach his kids in baseball and softball. He also volunteered his time with Boy Scout Troop 33 for several years. Ken was a long-time member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. He served as captain of the St. Mark’s Lutheran Bowling team for over 50 years and was a member of St. Mark’s 50+ fellowship group. Ken loved the outdoors and working in the garden and yard. He enjoyed growing tomatoes for his girls even though he didn’t like them. Ken was a lifelong, passionate Iowa Hawkeye fan. His other passion was to cheer on the Jefferson High School Softball teams and was a staple at home games. He never forgot a face, although names escaped him, and he never said a bad word about anyone.

Kenny loved his family tremendously and was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He especially cherished his grandchildren. Ken lived a full and wonderful life and he will live on in each and every one blessed to be touched by his presence. He will be greatly missed!

The family requests no flowers. Memorials in his name may be directed to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church or St. Luke’s Hospice.

Special thank yous to his Hospice nurse, Amanda, his doctors, his care givers, the Hospice volunteers, and all those who visited with him over the last few months. You brought him comfort during his final journey.
