Kaye Barton Keister, 74, 2928 Mansfield Ave SE, passed away on June 25, 2009 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, IA. Funeral services: 1:00 p.m. on Monday, June 29, 2009 at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Reverend Dr. Kay Slocum will officiate. A Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Sunday. Interment in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Kaye is survived by his wife of 52 years, Laura Roberta (Hamer) Keister, his sons, William Donald and Paul Merle Keister and his daughter, Kristen Kaye and her husband Paul Trovas. Seven grandchildren; Zachary Kaye – the first grandson who was born on his grandfather’s birthday, August 2, Matthew Donald, and Savannah June Keister, Callie Rae, and Shelby Lynn Cook, George Paul Trovas, Cordaro Tance Griffin (Traci) and a great-grandson, Quinton Braxton Griffin. Kaye has one younger brother, Kraig Murray Keister (Pam) of Belle Plaine, MN and on older sister, Beverly Ann Morlok-Finger (Robert) of Kirkwood, MO.

He was preceded in death by an infant baby brother, Garth, his parents, Donald Merle and June Wilma (Brundage) Keister and his beloved first born daughter, Jackie Lynn Keister-Pacheco (Jerry) – who died of breast cancer in 1997.

Kaye was a very good person, well liked and loved by those who knew him in all stages of his life. He was a full service Phillips 66 Dealer with Nordstrom Oil Co for 33 years. In 1987 he and Laura built and ran Kaye’s Car and Truck Service Center until their retirement in 1997.

Kaye graduated from Franklin High School in 1952 and attended Coe College. He married Laura Roberta Hamer at Jordon’s Grove Baptist Church in 1956. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2006. He was a wonderful father and a precious grandfather involved very much in each of their lives. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and loved the one that he was with at the time the most. Kaye will be greatly missed here on earth by those of us left behind to greave his passing but we know there was much rejoicing when he opened his eyes on the other side.

Darlene M. King

Darlene M. King, 72, of Hiawatha Care Center, died there, Saturday, June 20, 2009, after a long illness. Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church by the Rev. Jonathan Offt. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Darlene is survived by sons, Mark (Susan) King and Jeff (Michelle) King, all of Cedar Rapids, and Greg (Brandi) King of Kendaville, IN; sisters, Joyce Wegner of Castle Rock, CO, and Carol Ricklefs of Cedar Rapids; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Roy, for whom she did an outstanding job of caring for before his death.

Darlene was born June 21, 1936 in Cedar Rapids to Arthur and Emma Bruns. She married Roy Owen King there on February 2, 1957. He died in 1994. She was a secretary at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, retiring in 1994. Darlene loved Hawkeye sports – especially basketball and football and following the races at Hawkeye Downs when her son Jeff raced there. She loved working in her flower garden. Darlene lived her faith and was a dedicated member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed visiting with her longtime neighbors but her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Gail M. Kristensen Busha
Born in Milltown, WI on March 3, 1924
Departed on June 11, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Gail M. Kristensen Busha, 85, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, June 11, 2009 at Cottage Grove Place/The Oaks, Cedar Rapids following a brief illness.

Memorial services are planned at Cottage Grove Place.

Survivors include her husband, George; Daughters, Cynthia Kristensen (Jan Friedlander) of Castle Rock, CO, Corliss Karasov (William) of Madison, WI; Son, Charles Kristensen (Anita) of Yarnell, AZ; Step-Son, George A. Busha (Rose Anne) of Cedar Rapids; Step-Daughter, Georjean Hertzwig (Roald) of Pawling, NY. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

She was born Gail Marie Heppner was born March 3, 1924 in Milltown, Wisconsin the daughter of Dietrich & Alice (Gengnagel) Heppner. She was an internationally recognized world class ceramic artist & sculptor who worked in St. Paul, MN and Sedona, AZ. Examples of her work can be viewed online: Search Gail Kristensen-home. She married George F. Busha on May 17, 1974 in Algona, IA.

Memorials may be sent in her name to the Cedar Valley Humane Society, Cedar Rapids or Macalester College Art Department, St. Paul, MN.

Edward William Kemp
Born in Waterloo, Iowa on June 30, 1922
Departed on June 9, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Edward William Kemp, 86, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Tipton, passed away Tuesday June 9, 2009. Funeral Mass by All Saints Catholic Church held Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church by the Rev. David Ambrosy. Visitation will be on Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. Inurnment: St. Mary’s cemetery in Tipton.

Ed was born June 30, 1922 in Waterloo, Iowa, to Henry and Edith Kemp.

He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Milly Joslin and seven children; Ken (Patricia) Kemp of St. Paul, Minnesota, Lisa (Gary) Stadele of Ft. Collins, Colorado, Chris (Laurie) Kemp of St. Paul, Minnesota, Tim (Dianne) Kemp of Hills, Iowa, Susan (Mike) Schellenger of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Barbara (Mike) McShane of Russellville, Arkansas and David (Tina) Kemp of Russellville, Arkansas, and 4 stepdaughters; Chris Freguson of San Luis Obispo, California, Kathy Young of Freeport, Illinois, Ann Joslin (Kay Johnson) of Eagle, Idaho and Meg (Pete) Alepra of Cedar Rapids and 27 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Clarence Kemp of Longboat Key, Florida, and Paul Kemp of Iowa City, a sister, Berenice Patton of Waterloo, and sister-in-law Nancy McHugh of Cedar Rapids.

Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Polly Green Kemp, an infant son, Gary, his parents, and sisters, Clementine Jefferies and Alice Kemp.

Ed graduated from Waterloo West High School and the University of Iowa, where he was a Big Ten wrestling champion. He is a World War II Navy veteran. He practiced law in Tipton for 33 years, including his time as County Attorney. In Tipton he was an active member of the community. He served as President of various organizations including Rotary, the Tipton Golf and Country Club, Cedar County Bar Association, and Tipton Recreation Committee. He also volunteered with the Red Cross and Boy Scouts. He served as Chairman of the Cedar County Republican Party for many years and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was one of the founders of the Cedar Manor Nursing Home and served as its first President. He was a board member of the Grant Wood Area Education Agency. Ed was a life long Hawkeye supporter and loved to travel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ed Kemp Scholarship c/o Tipton High School.

Bernice A. Kohl
Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on February 19, 1938

Bernice A. Kohl, 71, of 5723 Muirfeld Dr. SW died Saturday May 30, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center with family and friends by her side after a long illness. Services at 11:00 Am on Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 42nd and Blue Jay Drive NE. Bishop Michael Perry will officiate. Entombment at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 7 PM on Tuesday and at the Church after 10:00 AM on Wednesday.

Survivors include two daughters, Karla Kohl of Decatur, Alabama, and Sue, (Scott) Edwards of Waukee, four sons, Gordon (Susan) of Fruit Heights, Utah, Lee of Cedar Rapids, Randall of Los Angeles, California and Steven (Tina) of Cedar Rapids, her father, Cecil (Joyce) Middleton of Cedar Rapids, a brother, Raymond (Ruth Ann) Middleton of Marietta, Georgia and a sister, Kate Middleton Rogers of Marion. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon, a sister, Marion Striegel and her mother, Rosamary.

Bernice was born on Feb. 19, 1938 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Cecil and Rosamary Thomas Middleton. She married Gordon L. Kohl on June 24, 1962 in Preston, Minnesota. He died in 1997. Bernice enjoyed a full and loving life. Her interests included dancing, crafts, sewing, and painting. She was foster parent to many children. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where she served in many callings and positions. Beyond her strong devotion to family and faith she loved to laugh and enjoyed music. Bernice had a profound belief in God and the after-life which should be a comfort to her family and friends. She will be greatly missed.

Memorial donations may be given to the American Cancer Society in Bernice’s name.

Edna Mae Kelsey

Edna Mae Kelsey, 92, of 5703 Golden Ct NE, died Monday April 13, 2009 in her home from a long illness. Services: 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, where friends may call after 12:00 p.m. until service time. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Bob Dagit from Sharon United Methodist Church will officiate. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Eugene Kelsey, a son, Everett Kelsey and wife Mary Ann of Reno, Nevada, two grandchildren, Bruce James Kelsey and wife Melissa, DeAnn Kelsey McAtee and husband Spencer, four great grandchildren, Alex Jay Kelsey, Jessica M. Kelsey, Austin E. McAtee and Kate Lynn McAtee.

Edna was born November 22, 1916 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Harry and Frances Haller. She married Eugene Kelsey on December 23, 1941 in Kahoka, Missouri. Enda was a bookkeeper for the Hubbard Ice Company in Cedar Rapids. She was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church where she was involved in Rebecca Circle and making quilts for the church missions. She loved to volunteer at St. Luke’s Hospital and volunteered over 15, 000 hours of her time to help people. She was a very kind and loving person and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

A memorial fund has been established.
