Edwin Frank Klouda, 92, of Cedar Rapids, died April 7 at Cottage Grove Health Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Services at 11:00 AM on Monday at Westminster Presbyterian Church where there will also be Masonic Services. Rev. Jim Langley will officiate. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 3 to 6 PM on Sunday and at the Church after 10 AM on Monday.
Known for his sharp wit and one-liners, Ed had an infectious smile, an incredible memory and a pithy toast for every occasion. He will be remembered for his work ethic, his generosity, and his propensity for having fun.

Ed will be greatly missed by his bride of 68 years, CharLes; his children: Dr. Gary Klouda and wife Carol of Medford, Oregon, Linda Kay Klouda of San Francisco, California, Roger Klouda and wife Gayle of Iowa City, Marla Wessel and husband Jeff of Cedar Rapids, and Marlene Huston and husband Tom of Rushford, Minnesota; six grandchildren: Anna (Klouda) Loomis and husband Geoff, Peter Klouda and wife Brooke, Justin Wessel and wife Stefani, Jacob Wessel, Kim (Klouda) Watkins and husband Crick, and Kyle Klouda; two step-grandchildren, Shane and Joshua Huston; five great-grandchildren: Brynli, Cooper and Addison Loomis, Caden Klouda, and Skyler Wessel; and one grand-dog, Jackie. He was preceded in death by his brother, Milo Klouda, and his sister, Eleanor Nelson.

Ed was born on June 4, 1917, to Rudolph Frank and Mary (Klepach) Klouda in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1935. He met his future wife, CharLes Mullenix, while studying mechanical engineering at Iowa State College. Ed and CharLes were married June 22, 1941, in Woodbine, Iowa.

Ed began his manufacturing career at Collins Radio after his high school graduation. During World War II, he was a manager at the Turner Company. In 1946, Ed started a tool and die business, New Era Industries, with his brother, Milo Klouda. He and CharLes later co-founded MSI Mold Builders, a plastic injection mold manufacturing company, in 1971. In addition to pursuing excellence in his own 60-year career, Ed also stimulated the local machining trade by training hundreds of machinists. Together, he and CharLes endowed a scholarship at Kirkwood Community College to ensure the continued training of skilled machinists. In 1997, Ed retired from MSI Mold Builders at age 80.

A self-proclaimed “eagle maniac” and orchid aficionado, Ed shared his love for natural beauty by gifting the fruits of his labor in the garden and greenhouse to appreciative family and friends. For more than 20 years, Ed and CharLes enjoyed spending winters in Hawaii and making new friends from around the world. They built his orchid collection to more than 200 varieties during their trips to Hawaii, on a Guatemalan orchid safari and through relationships with orchid-growers across the country. Together, Ed and CharLes were also fond of art that captured what they loved most in nature. They enjoyed befriending artists and building their collection of drawings, paintings and sculptures.

Ed was active as a Mason and Shriner, and in other fraternal organizations, including Past Master of Crescent Lodge, Past Patron of the Malta Chapter of the Eastern Star, 32° member of the Scottish Rite, Cedar Rapids Consistory, Past Potentate of El Kahir Shrine (1961), the Royal Order of Jesters and Theta Xi fraternity. Ed was a member of the Shrine Color Guard and was honored to carry the American flag to lead Shrine parades. He belonged to the Tuesday Noon Optimist Club and the American Orchid Society, and his loyalties and charitable contributions extended to the St. Luke’s Health Care Foundation and the Samuel J Kirkwood Society.

Ed was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids for more than 60 years. For the past three years, Ed and CharLes have been part of the Cottage Grove Place community in Cedar Rapids. CharLes and her family would like to thank St. Luke’s Hospice and the staff at Cottage Grove Health Center for their excellent, personal care for Ed.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the St. Luke's Foundation, the El Kahir Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children or to the Kirkwood Community College Edwin Klouda Endowed Scholarship Fund.

Martha Kottal
Born in Nichols, Florida on December 10, 1922
Departed on April 11, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Cemetery: Florida National Cemetery
Martha Kottal, 87, a resident of Keystone Cedars in Cedar Rapids died Sunday, April 11, 2010 at Keystone Cedars. No local services are planned. Inurnment will be held in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida at a later date. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Surviving is her son, Roy Kottal (Julia) of Cedar Rapids; Daughter, Ann Marie Kottal of Jacksonville, NC; and two grandchildren, Matthew Kottal of Iowa City and Shelby Kottal of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Alfred on May 12, 2006 and 8 siblings.

Martha was born December 10, 1922 in Nichols, Florida. She served as a nurse in the U.S. Army during World War II. On June 19, 1948 she married Alfred E. Kottal in Baltimore, MD. Martha was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women in Bartow, Florida.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans or to the American Heart Association.

The family would like to thank the staff at Keystone Cedars and Iowa Hospice for their support.

Caroline L. (Garlock) Kucharski
Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on October 29, 1934
Departed on April 17, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Caroline L. (Garlock) Kucharski, 75, of 190 Ryecroft SE, died Saturday, April 17, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday in All Saints Catholic Church. Msgr Charles Lang and Rev. David O’Connor will officiate. Burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home with a wake service beginning at 6:30 PM., and an hour before the service at the church.

Survivors include her husband Robert, daughter Kathryn Mary Kucharski of Boston, Mass., two sons Michael Robert (Kelle) Kucharski of Marion, and David John Kucharski of Washington DC, four grandchildren, Kathryn, Ryan, Staci, and Devin Olson, a sister Kathleen Garlock and brother in law Richard Gilson of Madison, Wisconsin, brother in law John Radler and wife Lillian of Summerfield, Florida, brother in law Russell Kucharski and wife Boksoon of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents William and Elizabeth Garlock, a son Mark and a sister Joan Radler.

Caroline was born October 29, 1934 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to William and Elizabeth Schneider Garlock. She graduated from Marquette University, Milwaukee, in 1956 with a degree in Medical Technology. She married Robert Kucharski on May 5, 1962, in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. They moved to Cedar Rapids in 1974.

Carol was active at All Saints Catholic Church and a longtime member of St. Monica’s Circle where she held several officer positions. She was a longtime member of Mercy Medical Center Auxiliary as well as a past president of that group. She was also a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

Carol was a wonderful mother and wife and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Memorials may be directed to All Saints Catholic Church Foundation, or to Mercy Medical Center Foundation.

Kathleen M. Kratzer
Born in Buffalo, New York on April 30, 1952

Kathleen M. Kratzer, 57, of 1323 Tower Lane NE. passed away at her home on Tuesday April 20, 2010 from complications of diabetes. Services at 1:00 PM on Saturday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 8 PM on Friday and at the Chapel after12:30 PM on Saturday.

Survivors include a son, Justin (Rachael) Ray and a daughter, Jennifer (Chris) Bishop all of Cedar Rapids; her mother, Gloria Flatt of Mesa, Arizona; three sisters, Colleen (Cub) Gish of Mesa, Arizona, Jody (Rich) Papa of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Heather (Robert) Yates of Frederick, Oklahoma. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Drake and Tiffany Bishop, Jaeden, Maclain, Rylan Ray as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, father and two brothers, Brian and Christopher McCarthy.

Kathleen was born on April 30, 1952 in Buffalo, New York, the daughter of Donald and Gloria McCarthy. She married Ronald E. Kratzer on Oct. 12, 1989 in Aurora, Colorado. He died in 1993.

Kathleen was the office manager at Spring Valley Dental for over 34 years and also was employed part- time at Rogers Jewelry. She belonged to the Riverside V.I.P. Club and enjoyed shopping and especially time spent with her beloved grandchildren and many many friends.

A memorial fund has been established in Kathleen’s name.

Pearl K. Kiesling
Born in Iowa County, Iowa on February 21, 1915
Departed on April 29, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Pearl K. Kiesling, 95, of Cedar Rapids, after her service to the Lord was complete, went home on Thursday April 29, 2010. Services: 10:30 A.M. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church by the Rev. Jonathan Offt. Visitation will be on Sunday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel from 3-5 p.m. and after 9:30 A.M. at the church on Monday. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughters, Janet S. Horton (Bob) of Chesterfield, Missouri and Carol A. Kiesling of Cedar Rapids, a sister, Lillian Dochterman of Cedar Rapids, three granddaughters, Stephanie Johnson (Kevin), Katherine D. Gasick (Mike), and Briana C. Nolan (Tom), three great grandsons,

Zach Gasick, Josh Gasick and A.J. Nolan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, John, Paul, Herman, Hilbert, and three sisters, Alvina Schwarting, Irma Schweitzer and Theresa Martinson.

Pearl was born February 21, 1915 in Iowa County, the daughter of Herman and Henrietta Eschenberg Schwarting. She married Harry J. Kiesling on May 15, 1937 at the Conroy Lutheran Church in Conroy, Iowa. Pearl was employed at F.M.C. and she retired from there in 1980. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Pearl enjoyed working with the flowers in her yard, service projects for the Lord, and being with family, friends, and her dog, Suzy Q.
