Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on June 26, 1922
Departed on October 30, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Leo S. Koutny, 88, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Friday, October 29, 2010. Private services will be held at a later date. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include four daughters, Sandi Ternus (Gary) of Ankeny, Cindi Seiler (Lynn) of Ames, Debbie Ironside (Joe) and Candi Croy (Rick) all of Cedar Rapids; 16 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Dorothy and 4 brothers.

Leo was born on June 26, 1922 in Cedar Rapids the son of Frank G. and Mary L. (Moses) Koutny. He married Dorothy Manak on October 9, 1943 in Cedar Rapids. Leo worked for over 37 years at Iowa Steel and Iron Works. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Leo was known for his delicious kolaches. He enjoyed gardening, photography and his computer. He loved socializing and spending time with family and his many friends.

Memorial donations in Leo's honor may be directed to the family.

Andris E. Kaupins
Born in San Antonio, Texas on February 7, 1951
Departed on November 5, 2010. Resided in Monroe, Iowa.

Service: Saturday, November 13, 2010
Andris (Andy) Kaupins, 59, of Monroe, Iowa, died suddenly at his home November 5, 2010. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 13, 2010, at 11 am in St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 8300 C Avenue, Marion, Iowa. Rev. Perry Fruhling will officiate at the service.

Andy was born February 7, 1951, in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from Rock Valley, Iowa high school. He received a B.A. in psychology from Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa, and an M.A. degree in library science from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa.

He served high school libraries at various Iowa locations. They include Le Mars, Indianola, Davis County (Bloomfield), and PCM (Monroe). He was also librarian in Kaplan University Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Andy enjoyed listening to music, especially pop tunes from the 1960’s and 1970’s. He often entered radio trivia contests and won often. He played tennis and won a tournament in Bloomfield.

He loved history and kept current with the latest pop culture and enjoyed visits to historical sights.

Andy is survived by his parents Rev and Mrs. Alfred and Skaidrite Kaupins of Cedar Rapids; brother Dr. Gundars Kaupins and his wife Debby and nephew Kyle in Boise, Idaho; stepchildren Stephanie Anderson and Geoff Farrell; two step-children Michael and Ryan: and a good friend Linda Shatto.

He is greatly missed by his family and friends. Jesus proclaimed, “I am the resurrection and the life.” (John 11:23)

A memorial fund has been established.

Lillian Bertha King

Lillian Bertha King, 78, of Cedar Rapids passed away on Monday, November 29, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 3, 2010 at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Rev. David Miller will officiate with burial in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends my call one hour before the service on Friday at the funeral home.

Survivors include her husband Norman King of Cedar Rapids; children Alan Loomis of Hills, Larry (Jodie) King of Cedar Rapids, and Bonnie (Jeff) Barcus of Massachusetts; 3 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; one brother Carl (Pauline) Petsel; and four sisters Viola Ellis, Doloris (Charles) Thomas, Nancy (Carl) Morning, and Mary (Errol) Starling.

She was preceded in death by her parents Lenard and Erna Petsel.

Lillian was born May 1, 1932 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Lenard and Erna (Dittburner) Petsel. Lillian married Norman Keith King on April 25, 1971 in the Oak Grove Christian Church. She graduated form Roosevelt Senior High School. She was employed by Rockwell Collins in Coralville and retired after 25 years of service.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

Virgil A. Kula
Born in Prairieburg, IA on May 10, 1922
Departed on November 29, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Virgil A. Kula, of Cedar Rapids, died at St. Luke’s Hospital, Monday, November 29, 2010. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Friday at St. Matthew Catholic Church by the Rev. David Beckman. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home and at the church after 9 a.m. on Friday.

Survivors include his brothers, Robert Kula, Richard Kula, Ronald Kula, and John Kula; sisters, Rosemary (Loren) Zabokrtsky and Mary Jean (Dale) Muller; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jean; brothers, LeRoy, Ray, and Delbert; and sister, Vivian Rickels.

Virgil was born May 10, 1922 in rural Prairieburg to Raymond and Emma Holub Kula where he grew up to appreciate the farm life. He married Jean Hofferd on May 1, 1954 in Cedar Rapids. She died on October 18, 2010. Virgil worked as a truck driver for Whitwer Company and then spent many years in the tire business for Baxter Motors, Brad Ragan, and Sears. Virgil was an avid hunter, and loved to hunt ducks and geese in Canada. He was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Matthew Catholic Church.

Helen Ann Little
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on September 16, 1925
Departed on May 30, 2011. Resided in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Helen Ann (Tefr) Little, 85, formerly of Cedar Rapids and Ely, died Monday, May 30, 2011, in Albuquerque, NM. Visitation will be at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Friday, June 3rd from 5 to 7 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Ludmila Catholic Church on Saturday, June 4th at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Thomas McDermott officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

She is survived by her only child, daughter Sally A. Little of Albuquerque, NM; sister Anna Mae (Robert) Anderson of Novato, CA; brothers Ron Landergott of Cedar Rapids, and Charles (Sandra) Landergott of Gainesville, GA; sister-in-law Mary V. Taylor of Plano, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father, Godfrey Tefr (1970), step-father, Charles Landergott (1972), mother, Irma (Stusak) Landergott (1994), and husband Merle in 1995.

She was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Sept. 16, 1925. She attended Hayes elementary school and graduated from Wilson High School in Jan. 1944. She married Merle J. “Moe” Little on Oct. 25, 1945. She worked for Cherry-Burrell, the telephone company, and Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids. In 1954 she moved to Wichita, Kansas where she worked as a doctor’s assistant at the Wichita Clinic (1954-1958) and later as a flight test data processor for Boeing Aircraft Co. (1956-1968). She moved to Nashville, TN in 1968 and attended nursing school, earning a LPN from Vanderbilt in 1970, an ADN and BSN from the Univ. of Tenn., Nashville in 1974 and 1980, respectively. She earned her Board Certification in Medical-Surgical Nursing in Jan. 1986. She worked for Vanderbilt Hospital (1970-1978) and the VA Hospitals in Nashville (1979-1986) and Murfreesboro, TN (1986-1990). In 1990 she moved to Plant City, FL and worked for the VA Hospital in Tampa from which she retired in Oct. 1993. She worked part time for two nursing homes in Plant City until 1996. She moved back to Iowa (Ely) in 2001. She had been a resident of Albuquerque, NM since Sept. 2006. She was a very caring and compassionate nurse, loving wife and mother, and a good friend.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., 7th fl., New York, NY 10001 or a charity of your choice.

Her daughter would like to send a special thank you to Dr. Craig Jensen, who provided exceptional professional and loving care for Helen during her last days at Presbyterian Hospital, the staff at Presbyterian Hospital, Dr. Elizabeth Morgan, who cared for Helen at the Woodmark Assisted Living and all the staff and caregivers at the Woodmark where Helen was a resident since March 2007.

Joseph James Less
Born in Cascade, Iowa on May 8, 1946
Departed on June 4, 2011. Resided in Anamosa, Iowa.

Joseph James Less, 65, of Anamosa, died June 4, 2011 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City following a courageous battle with cancer. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 6, 2011 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Inurnment will take place at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories Mausoleum.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce; his daughter, Jeana Less David (John Miller) of Anamosa; his grandson, Nate David; his siblings, Ann McNamara of Anamosa, John (Carol) Less Liberty, NE, Mike (Ruth Ann) Less of Atkins and Junior Less of Cascade, Iowa; sister in laws, Lila Kramer (John Walton) of Cedar Rapids and Joan Cuno of Dyersville; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew Jeff McNamara.

Joseph James Less was born May 8, 1946 in Cascade the son of Henry and Johanna (McDermott) Less. He was a 1965 graduate of Aquin High School in Cascade. He was united in marriage to Joyce M. Cueno on September 24, 1966 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Anamosa. He served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was employed at Harnishfeger and later at Rockwell Goss. He retired from Star Building Systems in Monticello as a welder. He will be remembered for always being a hard worker. He enjoyed fishing, going to casinos and watching his nephew race. Above all, his greatest enjoyment was time spent with his family, especially his grandson. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Joe’s honor.
