John G. “Jack” Lidvall, 84, of Cottage Grove Place, died Sunday, April 19, 2009 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at First Lutheran Church.
Rev. Dr. Kay Slocum will officiate. Friends may call Tuesday, April 21, 2009 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, and after 10:30 AM at the church on Wednesday.
Interment will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene; two sons, Dr. Steven Lidvall and wife Cindy of Rockford, IL; David Lidvall and wife Bethany of Lakewood, CO; a brother, Robert of Alcoa, TN; seven grandchildren; Stacy (Eric), John (Katie) and Brad (Maddie) of Rockford, IL, and Benjamin, Jacob, Daniel, and Becca of Lakewood, CO; a great granddaughter Addison of Rockford, IL; a brother-in-law Tom McGinnis of Fairfax; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Jack was born August 24, 1924 in Fort Dodge, IA the son of Ed and Hattie Gabrielson Lidvall.
He graduated from Boxholm High School and the University of Iowa.
During WWII he served with the Army Air Force.
His business career included eight years with the McGladrey, Hansen, Dunn accounting firm as a CPA and partner, twenty-eight years with Iowa Manufacturing Company where he served as Vice-President of finance and treasurer, and nearly twelve years as a executive director and vice-president of The Hall-Perrine Foundation.
He married
Darlene McGinnis in Wyoming, IA on August 20, 1949. Jack and Darlene were avid Hawkeye fans and supporters.
Jack was a life member of the Presidents Club at the University of Iowa, a member of the Tuesday Noon Optimist Club, a member of the National Association of Accountants, a member of the Board of Directors of the University of Iowa Scholarship Foundation, was on the Board of Directors of the Hall-Perrine Foundation, and a member of the First Lutheran Church.
His other interests were attending Iowa University athletic events, golf, family gatherings, and church activities.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jack’s name may be made to First Lutheran Church or Camp Courageous.
Ruth Jean Lightner Hastings Brown
Born in Aberdeen, South Dakota on June 11, 1917

Ruth Jean Lightner Hastings Brown passed away on April 8, 2009 after suffering a stroke at her Cottage Grove Place apartment in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Ruth was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Dean Howard Lightner and Grace Herreid Lightner on June 11, 1917.
She finished her last two years of high school in Brookings, South Dakota, and graduated from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio in 1938 with a degree in English Literature.
Ruth’s parents and brother were also alumni of Oberlin College.
Prior to her marriage, Ruth worked for Northwest Bank in Mason City, Iowa, and for Chase Manhattan Bank and Lord & Taylor in New York City.
Ruth married
Charles Albert Hastings of Garner, Iowa, on June 6, 1941 in Mason City.
After his Pacific PT Boat service in World War II, they lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where Chuck became a partner at Elliott, Shuttleworth and Ingersoll.
Ruth and Chuck were avid Hawkeye fans, enjoyed bridge, vacationed in Colorado, and shared fine French wines with friends.
Shortly before their 32nd anniversary Chuck passed away in April 1973.
On February 23, 1989 Ruth married
John R. Brown of Short Hills, New Jersey in Pompano Beach, Florida.
Ruth treasured John’s companionship, admired his computer expertise and enjoyed worldwide travel with him.
They lived many years in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Delray Beach, Florida before John passed away on April 2, 2007.
Ruth was deeply involved in her family and her community.
Over the years Ruth volunteered as a Camp Fire Girl leader, with the American Red Cross, on the YWCA Board and as a docent at Brucemore.
She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Monday League, PEO Chapter HJ and the Cedar Rapids Country Club.
During the 1950’s and 60’s she acted with the Children’s Theater in the Junior League of Cedar Rapids, where in one memorable production she played an adorable, floppy Raggedy Ann.
Throughout life she played golf and loved music.
Favorite family stories featured Jeffrey, the boxer dog.
Ruth is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Jean Hastings of Ann Arbor, Michigan and Margaret Anne Hastings (Mrs. Frances E.) Quinlan of Newport Beach, California; and three grandchildren: Essel William Bailey III of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Kathryn Hastings Quinlan of New York City and Daniel Fitzpatrick Quinlan of Pacific Beach, California.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her brother, Dean Howard Lightner, Jr., of St. Joseph, Michigan and Meadville, Pennsylvania.
In honor of Ruth’s wishes, no services will be conducted.
Her daughters will be holding a reception to honor her life on Saturday, May 16, 2009 from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. at Cottage Grove Place, 2115 First Avenue SE in Oak Hall.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Ruth’s memory to the Greater Cedar Rapids Foundation, the Cedar Rapids Symphony or to a charity of your choice.
Mildred A. Lodge
Born in Muscatine, Iowa on March 29, 1912
Departed on February 26, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Mildred A. Lodge, 96, of the Meth-Wick Community since 2001 died peacefully there on Thursday Feb. 26, 2009 after a short illness.
Services at 1:00 PM on Monday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories.
Rev. Dr. Leonard Ranson will officiate. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 2 to 4 PM on Sunday.
Survivors include a son, David (Joanne) of Cedar Rapids.
She is also survived by four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Edwin; her parents, two sisters and one brother.
Mildred was born on March 29, 1912 in Muscatine, the daughter of William and Mary Canaar Schulpke, moving to Cedar Rapids at the age of 9 months.
She graduated from Grant High School. She married
Lester C. Lodge in August of 1930 in Cedar Rapids.
They were married
60 years; until his passing in 1990.
Mildred retired from Perpetual Savings and Loan in 1977 after 30 years of service.
She has been a member of Salem United Methodist Church since 1935 belonging to the quilting/sewing circle and the Homebuilder Sunday School class.
After retirement, she volunteered at the Red Cross, the Educational Service Center and various Meth-Wick programs.
Mildred enjoyed her grandchildren, great grandchildren and liked to crochet, needlepoint and do ceramics.
Contributions may be given to Salem United Methodist Flood Fund or the charity of the donor’s choice.
The family would like to especially thank Dr. Richard Pope and the Meth-Wick Community staff for their attentive care.
Goldie J. Leferink
Born in Cresco, Iowa on August 12, 1933
Departed on February 24, 2009. Resided in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Goldie J. Leferink, 75 of Albuquerque, New Mexico, died Monday, February 24, 2009 at her home following a long illness. Per Goldie’s request, no services will be held.
Survivors include a daughter, Deb (Nick) Palen, son Bill (Lolly) Leferink and daughter, Lisa (Brett) Villeneuve all of Cedar Rapids, a sister, Marie (LeRoy) Baethke of Cresco, Iowa and two brothers, Harold (Helen) Craft of Cresco, Iowa and Ray (Aurilla) Craft of Waterloo, Iowa.
She is also survived by her 4 grandchildren and one great grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bill on May 31, 2007, her parents, two brothers, Urban and Kenneth Craft and a sister, Dorothy Van de Weerd.
Goldie was born August 12, 1933 in Cresco, Iowa, the daughter of Ward and Cora Craft.
She married
William Leferink of August 19, 1952 in Cresco.
Goldie most recently served as a crossing guard for the Albuquerque Police Department.
Hack Lee
Born in Muong La, Sonla, Vietnam on July 3, 1915

Hack Lee (Hack Xayasouk) 93, of 3303 King Drive SW died in St. Luke’s Hospital Sunday, February 22, 2009 at 6 PM following a sudden illness.
Services will be held at 1 PM Saturday, February 28, 2009, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by Rev. Mike Rassavan.
Visitation at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Friday.
Survivors include her three sons, Meck and Malay Xayasouk, Boom and Xuan Lee, Deng and Xengdao Xayasouk all of Cedar Rapids, four daughters, Lo Thi King of Vietnam, Veng Xaykhambane of Laos, Khamphiou and Paul Pierron of Marshalltown, Oune and James French of Lake in The Hills, Illinois, 43 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren, and 3 great great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, 3 brothers, 2 sisters and a daughter.
Hack Lee was born as Ca Thi Hack on July 3, 1915, in Muong La, Sonla, Vietnam the third daughter of Ca Van Boun and Ca Thi Noi.
Hack fled Laos to follow her eldest son Meck to the States in 1979 and settled in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
She was a beloved mother and a kind grandmother to her numerous great-grandchildren.
She will be missed by many friends and family.
