Virginia was truly a representative of the Greatest Generation. Virginia Stanek McWhinney was born in 1907 in Fairfax to parents Filip and Anna Barta Stanek. Her father was a carpenter who built so many of the beautiful old homes in Fairfax. She would help him draw up plans on butcher paper, by the light of a kerosene lamp. During the Depression, she moved to Cedar Rapids, worked at Newman's Department Store as a fashion model and met Lester McWhinney. They were married
in 1936 and struggled through the depression, living frugally as Lester entered the insurance business. When Lester was asked to serve his country, Virginia managed to maintain the office and was given much help by other agents such as Paul and Dee McCoy. She was a devoted and loving mother and after raising her children, worked for many years in the Kenwood and Washington cafeterias. She was a "poster child" for healthy living, in the mid 1950's advocating a good sense diet, vitamins, walking, and avoiding bad habits. She was almost a charter subscriber to "Prevention" magazine, and for many years a good customer of the "Health Hut". She was an excellent cook, enjoyed gardening, fellowship with friends at Bender pool, trips to "Stringtown" in Kalona, and especially dining at "Gwen's".
Virginia and Lester were part of the original membership of Elmcrest Country Club and members of Westminster Presbyterian Church for 55 years.
In her 98 years she was humble, grateful, and unselfish to those people in her life, everyone from the HyVee employees to her physician's assistants, always giving of herself.
She is survived by three sons, Jon Kay and Daniel Susan, all of Marion, and Jim of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Matt of Chicago, IL, Mark of Cedar Rapids, Mike of Milwaukee, WI, and Molly Parker of Bettendorf; four great grandchildren, Amanda and Lizzy McWhinney of Cedar Rapids, and Jacob and Jessica Parker of Bettendorf.
In 1994 she was preceded by her beloved husband, Lester; her sisters, Mabel Zaruba, Rose Petrovitsky, Edith Kolarik; her brothers, Oldrich and Filip Stanek; and grandsons, Paul Thomas McWhinney and Mitchell Jon McWhinney.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Camp Courageous and Westminster Presbyterian Church.
