Sarah Lynn Fruechte Ohsman, 51, of 3500 Lori Lane, Toddville, passed away Monday, August 30, 2010, following a long illness. A family gathering will be held from 5 to 8 PM Thursday at her home. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Survivors include her daughter Brooke Ohsman of Los Angeles, California, her son Jared Ohsman of Mesa, Arizona, her sister Barbara (Don) Patton of Minneapolis, Minnesota, her brother Mark (Carol) Fruechte of Evanston, Wyoming, as well as nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother Mike Fruechte.

Sarah was born July 6, 1959 in Cedar Rapids to Roland and Corrine Folkedahl Fruechte. She ran her own business and enjoyed gardening, fishing, and spending time with her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

A memorial fund has been established for her children, Brooke and Jared Ohsman.

Madonna Ryan Gremm Ross
Born in Waukon, Iowa on October 31, 1915
Departed on June 8, 2005. Resided in Marion, IA.

Madonna Ryan Gremm Ross, 89, a resident of Linn Manor Care Center, Marion, died there Wednesday June 8, 2005 following a short illness. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Hiawatha. Graveside service:2:00 p.m. at St. John's Catholic cemetery in Independence. Friends may call on Sunday at Turner East Funeral Home & Crematory from 2-7p.m where a vigil service at 6:00 p.m. The Rev. Neil Manternach will officiate.
Survivors include her husband Bill E. Ross of Cedar Rapids, her children, Elaine Bedell of Ridgedale, Mo. Allan Nancy Gremm of Coralville, and Colleen Dennis Charkowski of Cedar Rapids, and a step daughter, Barbara Tom Cowell of Fairbank, Iowa, a sister, Virginia Gremm of Hiawatha, 6 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 7 step grandchildren and 8 step great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two step daughters, Ila Murphy, Shirley Chapman, a step son, Paul Ross, and a step grandson, Shane Ross.
Madonna was born October 31, 1915 in Waukon, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Mary Lynch Ryan. She married Leonard Gremm on July 22, 1936 in Westridge, Iowa. He died March 28, 1970. She then married Bill Elton Ross on November 28, 1980 at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence.. Madonna worked in retail and owned and operated Rush Park Inn in Independence until her retirement in 1970. Madonna and Bill made their home with her daughter and son in law. She loved dancing, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Linn Manor Care Center and Mercy Hospice for the loving care given to Madonna.
Memorials may be made to Linn Manor Care or Mercy Hospice.

Kenneth James Nadermann
Born in Dubuque, IA on July 18, 1968

Kenneth “Ken" James Nadermann, 41, of Cedar Rapids, died at St. Luke’s Hospital, Saturday, May 8, 2010. Memorial Mass with military honors: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Jude Catholic Church by the Rev. Mark Reasoner. A visitation will be held Friday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel from 3 to 8 p.m. and after 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Survivors include his parents, Gerald and Janet Nadermann of New Vienna; sisters, Kim (Wayne) Kerian of Cresco and Sara (Derek) Johnson of Minneapolis; grandmother, Rita Deutmeyer of Dyersville; nieces and nephews, Kirstin, Elyse, and Alex Kerian, and Graham Johnson; and many aunts and uncles. Ken was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ray Deutmeyer and Mike and Alma Nadermann, and uncles, LeRoy and Eldon Nadermann.

Ken was born July 18, 1968 in Dubuque to Gerald and Janet Deutmeyer Nadermann. He was a 1990 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated with military, academic, and leadership distinction and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the United States Combat Engineers. Ken received a degree in Systems Engineering. Following graduation and commissioning, Ken attended the Engineer Officer Basic Course at Fort Leonardwood, Missouri and was assigned to the 555th Combat Engineering Brigade at Fort Lewis, Washington. Ken served with great distinction as a Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer and as a Battalion Adjutant. He received numerous military awards and accolades for his selfless service to the Army and soldiers. He is a Combat Veteran, having served his nation in the First Gulf War, with duty in Desert Shield, Desert Storm and in post war reconstruction efforts – helping to rebuild the infrastructure. Ken retired as a Captain with full military honors and benefits.

After leaving the military, Ken was employed by Parsons Corporation and then at Ament Inc.

Ken enjoyed reading historical fiction, crossword puzzles, and watching sports; especially the St. Louis Cardinals.

Ken was a role model and inspiration to all. He left a lasting and positive legacy on generations of friends, family and officers. He will be long remembered for his professional excellence, high but fair standards, personal integrity and steady pursuit of always “doing the right thing" no matter how tough. Ken was a generous and caring friend to all that had the honor of knowing him.

The family would like to thank the Iowa City VA Hospital, Ken’s private caregivers, and everyone for their support.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the ALS Association of Iowa or the Paralyzed Veterans of Iowa.

Julia L. Madlon

Julia L. Madlon, 70, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday October 17, 2011 in the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Services: 11:00 a.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Entombment: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Survivors include her sons; Thomas J. Maule (Penny Cowen) of What Cheer, Iowa, Timothy E. Maule ( Pam Chenet ) of Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Todd D. (Jennifer) Maule of Cedar Rapids, a sister, Nancy Angilin of San Francisco, California, a stepson, George Madlon of Marion, Iowa and a stepdaughter, Kim McIntosh of Oelwein, Iowa, 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Julia was born December 12, 1940 in Delhi, California, the daughter of Emil and Verta Henson Michalec. She married George Arthur Madlon on November 15, 1987. Julia was employed at Amana Refrigeration for 35 years. She enjoyed dancing with George, spending time at their cabin at Harper’s Ferry in northeast Iowa where they also enjoyed the fishing. Julia was known for her cooking. She spent much time cooking for family events and cooking for her beloved grandson Max who spent much time with her. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Harold LaVern McNiel
Born in Independence, Iowa on April 25, 1918
Departed on October 18, 2011. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Harold LaVern “Mickey" McNiel, 93, of Heritage Nursing and Rehab died there on Tuesday October 18, 2011 from complications of a stroke. Services at 11:00 AM on Monday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 2 to 4 PM on Sunday.
Survivors include two sons, William (Judith) and Robert (JoAnn) all of Cedar Rapids. Granddaughters, Terri McNiel (Sherrard Wiese) of Omaha, Nebraska, Molly (Michael) Gregory of Ozark, Alabama, Kelly McNiel Ellis of Cedar Rapids and Stephanie McNiel of New York City; great grandchildren, Aleah and Maggie Gregory, William Ellis and Mickey's companion Arlene St. Clair. He was preceded in death by his wife, three siblings, Gladys Dorney, Lloyd and Muriel McNiel.
Mickey was born on April 25, 1918 in Independence, the son of Walter and Nora Dicken McNiel. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids in 1936 where he participated in track and basketball. During a short period of time he worked in Gary, Indiana, where he entered Golden Gloves competitions. He met Nora Mae Snodgrass while in Gary; they married on August 7, 1938 in Rensseler, Indiana and moved to Cedar Rapids. Nora died in 1997.
Mickey started at Iowa Manufacturing in 1938 as a welder, retiring in 1982 as Director of Purchasing. He represented Iowa Manufacturing as a welding consultant for the Cedar Rapids Schools vocational-technical post high school courses.
In 1953 he became an active member and deacon of Central Park Presbyterian Church later, Echo Hill. He was also a member of the Elks Club. Mickey had a strong work ethic and he loved life, whether fishing on the Mississippi or sitting on the beach in Ft. Myers, Florida.
“Special thank you to the staffs of Emeritus at Silver Pines and Heritage Nursing and Rehab for their care and concern." A memorial fund has been established.

Jack H. Minder Sr.
Born in Muscatine, Iowa on August 10, 1936
Departed on October 19, 2011. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Jack H. Minder Sr., 75, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday October 19, 2011 in Living Center West following a long illness. Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. The. Rev. Lloyd Brockmeyer will officiate. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife Donna of 54 years, his father, Gene E. Minder of Cedar Rapids, a son, Jack H. (Linda) Minder Jr. of Cedar Rapids, a daughter, Jill (Brian) Carlson of Vinton, a sister, Irma Jean Turner of Lincoln, Nebraska, a brother, Edward Minder of Kearney, Missouri, six grandchildren; Jason Minder, Lindsay Minder, Allison Gaines, Ian Gaines, Tami Carlson, and Jake Carlson, and two great grandchildren; Aidyn and Jordyn Gaines. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother Eleanor Minder and a daughter, Joan Gaines.

Jack was born August 10, 1936 in Muscatine, the son of Gene and Eleanor Minder. He married Donna J. Usher on February 13, 1957 in Cedar Rapids. Jack worked for the Quaker Oats Company in packaging. He was an active softball player and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. Jack was a good man. His family was very important to him. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Memorial may be directed to St. Luke’s Hospice.

Lois Novak
Born in Marion, Iowa on October 19, 1925
Departed on March 12, 2012. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Lois “Torchie" Novak, 86 passed away on March 12th, 2012 at Living Center West, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 17th, 2012 at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. A visitation will be held 30 minutes prior to the service. Officiating will be Rev. William B. Harnish. Friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial will be at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery.

She is survived by her daughter Vikki Novak of Cedar Rapids; a niece Sharron (Jim) Michalczyk of Carpentersville, IL; and many loving cousins.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, William and Ruth (Hutton) Booze; her husband Charles Novak; a brother Wilson Booze; and Sister Mary (Dale) Harris.

Lois Novak was born October 19, 1925 in Marion, Iowa the daughter of William and Ruth (Hutton) Booze. She was united in marriage on May 31, 1952 to Charles Novak. Lois owned and managed The Coffee Den, which was right across the Gazette building for many years. She also worked for Wilson Meat Packing. She very much enjoyed time spent with her daughter, family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

A memorial fund has been established.
