LOUIS NUŅEZ MARTINEZ, 88, son of Narcissa and Genaro Martinez was born July 13, 1921 in Cedar Rapids. He went home to the Lord on April 1, 2010. Funeral Mass: 11 am Thursday at St. Ludmila Catholic Church by the Reverend Thomas McDermott. Visitation is Wednesday from 4 to 7:30 pm at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home where a vigil service will begin at 7 pm. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery

He is survived by his daughters Keveta Kay Andersen of Nicaragua and Reveille Rae of Cedar Rapids; one grand-daughter Heather Ruth Andersen of Redding, California; and many special cousins, nieces and nephews. He also has many special friends in the Hispanic community who meant so much to him. He was preceded in death by his wife Norma “Bernie”, his parents, several brothers and sisters, his godparents, Merced and Mary Saldana and their children, Phillip Saldana and Francis Saldana.

Louie worked at Iowa Steel & Iron Works as a welder and assembler for over 40 years and part-time at Iowa Manufacturing. He was an avid sports fan and actively participated in basketball, baseball, bowling and horseshoes. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, Los Amigos Club, Eagles Club and was an usher at St. Ludmila Church. Louie loved dancing, playing cards with friends, tinkering in the garage and riding his lawnmower.

He will always be remembered for his gentle spirit and beautiful smile, He was a faithful husband and good dad.

Mildred McGowan
Born in Toddville, Iowa on November 5, 1914
Departed on April 1, 2010. Resided in Marion, Iowa.

Mildred I. McGowan 95, of Marion, died Thursday, April 1, 2010, at the Hiawatha Care Center. Services will be held at 1 PM Tuesday in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Mark F. Lofquist of the Toddville Free Methodist Church will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 1 PM on Tuesday at the chapel.

She is survived by niece and caretaker, Jennifer ( David) Cress-Slife, nephew and caretaker David (Kim) Casteel, special friend and caretaker Debbie Hogan, and many other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mansfield and Nellie Cress, her husband Thomas E. McGowan, her siblings, Orville, Curtis, Gladys, Mary, Josephine Pearl, Carl and Dorothea (in infancy), and special friend, Joe Hanisch.

Mildred was born November 5, 1914, rural Toddville, Iowa, to Mansfield and Nellie (Minor) Cress. She graduated from Grant High School in Cedar Rapids in 1931. She was united in marriage to Thomas E. McGowan on January 21, 1936. Tom died in 1982. Mildred and Tom were long-time residents and supporters of Marion.

Mildred owned and operated Rainbow Real Estate for 17 years in Hiawatha. She had also been employed by the Cedar Rapids Assessors Office, Linn County Treasurers office, and during WW II worked at LaPlant-Choate. She was a lifelong member of the Toddville Free Methodist Church and was a founding member of the Open Arms Group at the church. She was also a member of over 50 years with the Marion Nature and Garden Club. Her hobbies included gardening, traveling, and decorating for the holidays. She was also an accomplished seamstress, sewing her own wardrobe for most of her life.

Her family would like to thank Dr. Anne Voigts, her nurse Kristy, along with the staff at Hiawatha Care Center, for the tender care given to Mildred.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Toddville Free Methodist Church, 309 Johnson Dr., PO Box 93, Toddville, Iowa 52341

Bonnie R. Malone
Born in McCallsburg, Iowa on September 22, 1925
Departed on April 9, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Bonnie R. Malone, 84, of 1035 Regent St. NE. died Friday April 9, 2010 at St. Lukes Hospital after a long illness. Private family services will be held at a later date. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Cindy (Myron) Swanson of Devils Lake, North Dakota, Patti (Kent) Enderes of Bozeman, Montana and one son, Kelly (Marla) of Central City. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Danielle, Michelle, Angel, Shelby and Riley; 13 great grandchildren and special friend, Roy Sheldon. She was preceded in death by her husband.

Bonnie was born on September 22, 1925 in McCallsburg, Iowa the daughter of Ervin and Beulah Christian Morris. During WWII Bonnie worked for Time Life Magazine. She married Wesley L. Malone on January 22, 1946 in Hiawatha, Kansas. He died in 1982. Bonnie was a cafeteria hostess for the Cedar Rapids Community Schools for over 19 years, retiring in 1992. She enjoyed walking, bird watching and time spent with friends and family at their cabin on the Wapsipinicon River.

Memorial donations may be given to the Anna Purna Ghosh Foundation, P.O. Box 1248 Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52401 or to Hospice of St. Lukes in Bonnie’s name.

John Byron Oliver
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on October 10, 1950
Departed on October 14, 2011. Resided in Central City, Iowa.

John B. Oliver, 61, died while visiting in Springfield, Illinois Friday, October 14, 2011. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel followed by a memorial meal to be held at JETC Training Facility at Hawkeye Downs. Private inurnment will be held at Dunkard cemetery, Midway.

Survivors include his children, Michelle Thompson, Jill (Robert) Zeck, Amy Holub, Robert Wilcox, and Charles Wilcox, all of Cedar Rapids; sister, Patricia (Larry) Parsons of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Jacob and Tiffany Holub, Brandon (Liz) Cassiday, and Michael and Cassie Wilcox; great grandchildren, Dominick and Abrianna Cassiday; many nieces and nephews; and many lifelong friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives, Mary Catherine Elliott and June Diane Hakes, and brothers, Wendal and Wally.

John was born October 10, 1950 to Byron and Florence Oliver. He was a lifelong member and retiree of the IBEW Local 43 and was president of the retiree committee. John was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and Bears. He enjoyed and attended many Nascar races. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, and camping.

The family wants to extend a special thank you to his brothers in the IBEW Local 43.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Beverly J. Meier
Born in Cedar Rapids on June 20, 1933
Departed on April 14, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Beverly J. Meier, 76, of 1710 Meiers Ct. NW, passed into the loving arms of our Lord Wednesday, April 14, 2010, in St. Luke’s Hospital peacefully cradled in her loving husband’s arms and surrounded by her family. Memorial services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 10 AM to service time.

Survivors include her husband of nearly 59 years Wayne Sr., their children Kathy Aller of Cedar Rapids, Karey McCarthy of Wisconsin, and Wayne (Jackie) Meier Jr. of Robins, Iowa, her sister Barbara Falvey of Albuquerque, New Mexico, three grandchildren, Lisa (Justin) Pichler, Chelsey (Jeremy) Oberreuter, and Curtis Meier, and two great grandsons Brady and Bryce Pichler. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Beverly was born June 20, 1933 in Cedar Rapids to Richard and Elynore Miller Spacek. She married her high school sweetheart Wayne Meier Sr. on August 11, 1951 in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. She was the first manager of the Flower Stall at St. Luke’s Hospital, retiring in 1991. She graduated from McKinley High School in 1951, where she was a varsity cheerleader and a member of the choir. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, St. Luke’s Hospital Auxiliary, and Future Home Makers of America. She was a leader in Bluebirds, and Campfire girls. She enjoyed flower gardening, spending time at their lake home at Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, traveling, especially during the winter months around the gulf coast with family and friends in their RV, and spending time with loved ones. Her cats were also always a source of great joy to her. Everyone is aware of Beverly’s fondness for the color purple, so feel free to wear something purple to the services.

Anna Marie Neff
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on August 4, 1911
Departed on July 31, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Anna Marie Neff, 98, of 3410 12th Ave. SW died Saturday July 31, 2010 at St. Lukes Hospital after a short illness. Private family services on Saturday at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. There will be no public visitation.

Survivors include two sons, George and his wife, Barbara, William and his wife, Sarah, and a sister, Dorothy Haberle all of Cedar Rapids. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Steve, Jon, Tom, Susan, Chris, Laura and David, and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister, Bertha and a brother, George.

Anna Marie was born on August 4, 1911 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of George and Anna Schlichting Heimendahl. She married William D. Neff on November 25, 1944 in Cedar Rapids. He died in 1997. Anna Marie was a homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marion as well as being a member of United Methodist Women. She enjoyed cooking, baking and especially the time spent with her family and friends.

Memorial donations may be given to the Shriners Crippled Children’s Hospital in Ann Marie’s name.

Alma Marie Matthews
Born in Langworthy, IA on September 11, 1914
Departed on April 14, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Alma M. Matthews, 95, of Cedar Rapids died Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at Northbrook Manor Care Center. Services: 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel, where friends may call after 12:30 p.m. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery.

Alma is survived by her son Lyle, wife Pat, grandson John, wife Liz and great grandchildren Holly and Jacy. She is also survived by 2 sister-in-laws and several nieces and nephews.

Alma was preceded in death by her husband John, grandson Tim and great grandson Hietina, her parents, two sisters and three brothers.

Alma was born September 11, 1914 in Langworthy, Iowa to John and Jeanette Knake. She married John M. Matthews on September 29, 1942 in Kirksville, Missouri. Alma was a constant volunteer and always on a mission. Early years consisted of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, PTA at all levels from elementary through high school and at the state level. Alma and John also volunteered at the Vets Hospital in Iowa City. They were also strong members of the Eagles, Moose and Amvets. She and John held nearly all offices in the Eagles Club and REAC group.

The family wishes to thank the Northbrook Staff for their loving care the past 7 years. Also, thank you to the St. Luke’s Hospice for their concern and care these past 4 months.
