Donna Bernice Matson, 89, of Cedar Rapids died June 2, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, June 4, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Fred Darbonne will officiate. Friends may call from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Inurnment will take place 10:00 AM, Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Park cemetery.

Bernice is survived by her brother Donald Washburn of Cedar Rapids; two sons, Joel (June) Matson, SR. of Plainfield, IL, and Bryan Matson of Cedar Rapids; 5 grandchildren, Arlene (Ted) Roderick, Joel JR., Cheryl (Kenny) Beckman, Adam (Stacy) Matson and Andrea (Dustin) Rahe; and seven great grandchildren, Joel III, Zakary, Noah, Henry, Harlan, Samantha, and Marissa.

She was preceded in death by her parents Wilsie and Grace Washburn; brothers, Arnold, Dean, and Leland Washburn; and her sister, Fern Cover.

Bernice was born on the Jones farm, in Buchanan County, Iowa the day before Easter on March 26, 1921. Bernice graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1939 and spent her years as a mother and homemaker. She was an active member of Cedar Christian Church for over 50 years, where she participated in the choir, tabular, and many committees. Bernice also enjoyed volunteering at the floral shop at St. Luke’s Hospital for over 10 years. She loved spending time with family and friends, and finishing the daily crossword in the newspaper. Most of all, she was proud of her two sons, Joel and Bryan.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Bernice’s honor.

Margaret "Bea" Miller
Born in Hawkeye, Iowa on February 19, 1922
Departed on May 18, 2010. Resided in Solon, Iowa.

Margaret “Bea" Miller, 88, of the Solon Care Center in Solon formerly of Cedar Rapids died peacefully with her family by her side at the Solon Care Center on Tuesday May 18, 2010. Services at 11:00 AM on Friday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Perry Cruse will officiate. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Thursday.

Survivors include a son, Earl (Arlene) of North Liberty and a sister Sandy Brundidge of Cedar Rapids. She is also survived by five grandchildren; DeAlleyn Wyman, Stefanie Rossmeisl, Larry, Chad and Jason Miller and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, Robert Wickham and three sisters, Ruth Annis, Barbara Shepard and Hope Blackwell.

Bea was born on February 19, 1922 in Hawkeye, the daughter of John and Vivian Shook Wickham. She graduated from West Union High School and married Laurence Earl Miller on June 13, 1942 in Canton, Missouri. He died in 1991. Bea was a bacon slicer at Wilson and Company for over 43 years, retiring in 1980. She was a member of several bowling leagues. Bea enjoyed collecting Avon, elephants, shopping and time spent with her family especially her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Memorial donations may be given to the Iowa City Hospice in Bea’s name.

Louise Ann Osterby
Born in 6-Nov-38 on November 6, 1938
Departed on May 29, 2007. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Louise A. Votroubek Osterby, 68, of 1920 Grande Ave. SE. died Tuesday May 29, 2007 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. Private family services at 12:30 PM on Friday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Mark Osterhaus will officiate. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Cedar Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Charles, two daughters, Debra Brokaw, and Tami Joseph Cerruto, a son, Michael Maria De La Mater all of Cedar Rapids, a step-son, Karl Osterby and three step-daughters, Amy Lambert, Sandra Osterby and Ellen Pitts all of Maine. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Christopher Abby De La Mater and Bradley De La Mater, Nicholas and Hannah Brokaw and Bethany and Matthew Cerruto. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Mary Magdalene Krewson, Marjorie Albertson and a brother, Paul Votroubek.

Louise was born on Nov. 6, 1938 in North Liberty, the daughter of Frank and Effie Scorpil Votroubek. She married Darold De La Mater on Feb. 18, 1955 in Rock Island, IL. They were later divorced. She then married Charles A. Osterby on Aug. 8, 1963 in New York City. Louise worked at Collins Radio for several years and later at Cardion Electric in assembly for 14 years, retiring in 1991.
She loved crafts; sewing, stained glass, and crewel. Louise was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. Although Louise suffered a stroke 10 years ago and was unable to speak, her vibrant personality was everlasting and will always be remembered. She will be greatly missed.

Nellie Marie Meyer
Born in Cedar Rapids, IA on July 5, 1925
Departed on December 3, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Nellie Meyer, 85, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, December 3, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital. Services: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel. Interment: Linwood cemetery. A visitation will be held at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. and after 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Nellie is survived by four daughters, Phransie Drew and Marvie (Ted) Wisniewski, both of Chicago, IL, and Barb (Howard) Strobel and Cindy Maker, both of Cedar Rapids; sister, Lucile Hamed of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Melanie (Rich) Ecker, Tom (Carmen) Vrzal IV, Sherry (Russell) Carrano, Art (Erica) Stork, Becky Maker, Gary Maker, and Nancy (David) McCoy; and great grandchildren, Kyle Ecker, Tom (Crystal) Vrzal V, Jena Vrzal, Katrina Vrzal, Russell Dominic Carrano, Skye Ary, Ernie, Rachel and Leah Maker, Finnigan McCoy, and Artie, Sophia, and Eric Stork.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph Meyer; two daughters, Nancy, nee Fritz Sorcek and Donna Marie Fritz; grandson and wife, Jefferson and Karen Vrzal; great grandson, Joshua Vrzal; siblings, Bill and Chuck Goyer, Amelia Keith, and Velma Fogarty; and former husbands, Donald Fritz, Henry Feuss, and Marvin Landis.

Nellie was born July 5, 1925 in Cedar Rapids to Fred and Pearl Goyer. She spent her life as a loving mother who enjoyed gardening, canning, singing and dancing. Nellie went on to be a Nurse’s Aid at Lakeview Manor in Weyauwega, Wisconsin. She retired from Lakeview and moved back to Cedar Rapids. Nellie was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary Post # 788.

The family would like to thank St. Luke’s Hospice staff and the Fifth Floor East and West nursing staff, her social worker, Bruce, and nurse, MaryAnne for the wonderful care and kindness given to Nellie.

Memorials may be directed to the family and St. Luke’s Hospice.

Michael B. McGuire

Michael B. McGuire, 58, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on Sunday, December 26, 2010. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church by the Rev. Dr. Kay Slocum. Private Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery with military honors. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Michael is survived by children, Corey (Victoria) McGuire, Chris McGuire and Casey McGuire, all of Cedar Rapids; his mother, Dawn McGuire of Cedar Rapids; brother, Cevn McGuire of Hilo, HI; and grandchildren, Caleigh and Cole McGuire. He was preceded in death by his father.

Mike was born October 15, 1952 in Cedar Rapids to Floyd and Dawn McGuire. He graduated from Washington High School and attended Wartburg College in Waverly. He enlisted in the Air Force and worked in the reception hospital for returning soldiers from Viet Nam. Mike worked for General Mills for over thirty years, retiring in 2010. Mike was an Eagle Scout and an active member of First Lutheran Church where he taught Alpha Class and volunteered in the community. He loved HO scale model railroads, railroad museums & riding and watching trains. He also enjoyed fishing, camping and the outdoors with family. He was an avid Hawkeye and Dallas Cowboy fan. Mike liked many kinds of music and sharing it with friends. Mike enjoyed working with computers and learning new technology but his greatest joy was spent with his grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.

Vivian M. Newell
Born in Cedar Rapids on April 22, 1917
Departed on October 23, 2002. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Vivian M. Newell, a resident of the Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center in Cedar Rapids for the past 3 and a half years died Wednesday, October 23, 2002, at Heritage following a long illness. Services at 11 AM Monday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Herbert Knudten Jr., a longtime family friend, will officiate. A luncheon will be served after the service. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 2 to 4 PM on Sunday and at the chapel after 10:30 AM on Monday.
Survivors include her loving husband Robert Keith Newell of Cedar Rapids, a son Lawrence Newell and wife Monica of Elkhorn, Nebraska, and three daughters Sandy Marshburn and husband Bill of Rock Hill, South Carolina, Susie Coolican of Horseheads, New York, and Patty Cogswell and husband Bill of Columbus, Ohio, a sister Nadene Trachta of Marion, Iowa, twelve grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents George and Julia, Swan, two sisters, Dorothy Parents, and Ellen Dailey, and one grandson who died at birth.
Vivian was born on April 22, 1917 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to George and Julia Swan. She married Robert Keith Newell on January 14, 1941 in Waverly, Iowa. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She worked as a beautician until her children were born. She was a wonderful cook and her favorite pastimes included sewing and flowers. She also enjoyed nature, especially bird watching, and watching wild animals such as deer that she could see from where they lived near their Coralville Lake Iowa home. She enjoyed golfing with her husband, and both are avid Hawkeye fans.
Vivian and R. Keith Newell lived in Rome, New York for 10 years where he was plant manager for Pettibone Corporation.
A memorial fund has been established.
