Raymond D. Nelson, 78, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Saturday, August, 6, 2011 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Entombment with military honors in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Raymond D. Nelson was born August 17, 1932 and has gone to be with the love of his life. Ray was born and raised in Madison, South Dakota. He graduated from Madison High School in 1950. He married
the love of his life, Patricia Satterlee in 1952 and they had 55 wonderful years together. Pat passed away in 2007. Pat and Ray were blessed with two wonderful children, Mike in 1954 and Michele in 1959. Mike passed away in 2001.
Ray is survived by his daughter Michele (Jose) Lara of Sand Springs, OK, ; mother, Florence Nelson, his sister Sharon Donegan, and brother Dennis Nelson all of, MA; daughter-in law Shannon Nelson of Longmont, CO.; grandchildren, Ashley, Samuel, Michael and Cody Swatosh of Tulsa, OK; four great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, John and sister, Marlys and Dorothy.
Ray served in the United States Air Force from 1952 until late 1963. He joined Collins Radio in 1963 and retired in 1999. Ray was a member of the American Legion Post #298 in Marion. Ray was blessed with an unbelievable amount of great friends. He would wish them all good health, long life and pleasant memories. Ray loved to play golf, play poker with Legion friends, watch NFL games, college football and basketball. He also loved to have coffee with friends at The New Me salon and Donutland. Last but not forgotten he would like to thank several very special couples who have watched over him, entertained him and asked for nothing but understanding, Peggy Wieneke and Paul Schliemann, Bob and Jeannie Brown, and Bob and Robin Elliot.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed in Ray’s name to Camp Courageous or the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha.
Walter D. Nurre

Walter D. “Walt" Nurre, 83, of 1829 8th Ave SE, died peacefully, Sunday, March 8, 2009, at Living Center West. Services will be held at 1 PM Wednesday in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Chaplain Jeremy Hudson of St. Luke’s Hospice will officiate. Entombment in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday in Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, and after 12:30 PM Wednesday at the chapel.
Survivors include two daughters Mary Lou Fleisher of Cedar Rapids, and Barb (Roger) Shebetka of Springville, two sons Kevin (Laurie) Nurre of Cedar Rapids, and Darrell (Angie) Cannon of Palo, fourteen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren plus three on the way, and his very beloved dog Johnny. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a sister Germaine Bockenstedt.
Walt was born March 18, 1925 in Petersburg, Iowa to Herbert and Mabel Rubly Nurre. He married
Doris (Dorie) Sampson on June 24, 1947 in Earlville, Iowa. She died October 23, 2005. He was employed by Killians in furniture sales. He was a Hawkeye fan when he won the pools, and was a drummer for several dance bands in our area for several years. Both Dorie and Walt were avid polka dancers and dance instructors. He also enjoyed working in his yard.
Walts family wishes to extend special thanks to St. Luke’s Hospice and to Living Center West for their loving and tender care of him.

Kenneth Paul Neuendorf

Kenneth Paul Neuendorf, 65, of 1044 Eisenhower Rd, Hiawatha, died Thursday April 30, 2009 in Mercy Medical Center following a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel, where friends may call on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. Burial: Evergreen cemetery in Vinton. The Rev. William B. Harnish will officiate.
Survivors include his wife Connie, his children, Robert (Melanie) Neuendorf of Hiawatha, Rebecca (John) Welsh of Cedar Rapids and Lisa Neuendorf of Cedar Rapids, his mother, Evelene Neuendorf of Vinton, his sister, Pamela (Mike) Covington of Vinton, his brother, Kevin (April) Neuendorf of Hiawatha, his grandchildren, Amanda Conrad, Courtney Jo Swift, Brittney Jo Welsh, Dade Kalous, Sarah Neuendorf and Devon Hasek, his great grandchildren, Aleigha Conrad, Brooke Conrad, Brayden Swift, and Rose Conrad.
His father, Paul W. Neuendorf and a brother, Jerry Keith Neuendorf preceded him in death.
Kenneth was born December 28, 1943 in Mountain Grove, Missouri the son of Paul and Evelene Richards Neuendorf. He married
Connie M. Engledow on March 29, 1964 in Vinton. Kenneth worked for the Quaker Oats Company as a millwright for 35 years before retiring, and later at the Bus Barn for the Cedar Rapids School District. He enjoyed fishing, gambling, riding his Harley Motorcycle and hanging out with his buddies at Donutland. His favorite was spending time with his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Mary Helen Olson

Mary Helen Olson, 87, passed away June 28, 2007, following a short illness. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 2, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. Rev. Dr. Herb Isenberg will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 1, at Cedar Memorial - Westside Chapel.
Survivors include sons Scott Penny of Cedar Rapids; Ron Sue of Cedar Rapids; and Jock Cherie of Minneapolis, MN; along with grandchildren Scott Olson II Trish; Kristin Sankovitz Jim; Tyler Olson Sarah; Kelli Olson; Mindy Olson fianc? Ethan Domke; Kalen Olson; Jill Olson; and great-grandson Frank Donald Sankovitz.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband J. Donald and her parents Eva and Walker Morehead.
She was born in Knoxville, Iowa and graduated from Knoxville High School and Chillicothe Business School. She met Don at a small town dance in southern Iowa and they were married
November 1, 1941, in the Iowa Memorial Union following an Iowa Homecoming football game. An interesting moment in Mary's life occurred in Denison when Mary hired Donna Reed, whose brother bowled with Don, as a baby sitter for Scott and Ron.
Mary led a full life beginning as an administrative assistant to the Iowa State Liquor Commission in Des Moines including double-dating with Ronald Reagan during his time at WHO. While living in Marshalltown she served as a legal clerk for District Judge Robert O'Brien and worked in the county assessor's office. In Cedar Rapids she was employed as an administrative assistant at the Lefebure and Tension Envelope Companies. Then she served as an executive assistant during the founding years of Life Investors working for Ron Jensen, Charlie Stortz and Ernie Zimpfer. After leaving Life Investors Mary and Don owned and operated Touch of the Southwest, a jewelry and art store in downtown Cedar Rapids.
Throughout her working years she always found time to join Don in their passion for the game of golf. They traveled throughout Iowa with many of their friends playing golf and competing in tournaments. They were members of Elmcrest Country Club since 1961. She was an active member of the Iowa Women's Golf Association, a past board member and course rater. Mary was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and PEO.
She enjoyed e-mailing family and friends, loved watching the Hawkeyes, enjoyed everyone she met, was always a stylish dresser and dressed as an elf every Christmas holiday. Mary never passed up a chance to share a dance with Don or a close friend.
The family would like to thank the staffs at Village Ridge, Living Center West, Mercy Medical Center, Dr. Mark Hogenson and all her friends at Blair House for their special care and friendship with Mary.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Jeanne, daughters, Chris (Steve) Barrett of Leland, Illinois, Randi (Rick) Roach of Syracuse, New York, Connie Nicholson of Circle Pines, Minnesota, Lori (Jon) Bratton of Cedar Rapids, one son, Gary of Skamania, Washington, grandchildren, Katie, Kelly and Dan Roach, Beth and Sara Nicholson, Lindsay Jones and Kristin Bratton and Nick and Scott Barrett and two great grandchildren, a sister, Leila Brown of Cedar Rapids and a brother, Noel Neu of Moline, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, L.J. Neuenswander and a sister, Cleo Washburn.
Gale was born October 28, 1924 in Neilsville, Wisconsin. He was a member of Kenwood Park United Methodist Church. He served in the Navy during World War II, stationed in California and ranked as a Seaman. He was an accountant at the Electric Company in Cedar Rapids and was later a union Laborer. He helped build the Palo Nuclear Power Plant and the original Lindale Mall. After retirement he drove the Allen’s Car Dealership Courtesy Car. Gale enjoyed fishing, gardening and square dancing.

Hortense "Shorty" Wilson Nerison, 88, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday April 9, 2007 in Mercy Medical Center from complications of a stroke. Services: 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Visitation will be today from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel, 1221 First Ave SW, and after 10:30 am at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories on Thursday. Cedar Memorial-Westside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Don Wilson and wife Judy of Cedar Rapids, three sisters, Uda Varney of Denver, Colorado, Earlene Riley of Oak Hill, Kansas and Irene Beals of Washington State. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Theresa Hunt and husband Jim of Camdenton, Missouri, Linda Adney of Cedar Rapids, Dan Wilson of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Jodi Burke and husband Bob of Cedar Rapids, seven great grandchildren, Byron, Jeremy, and Kristen Hunt, Paris, Elijah and Danielle Adney and Brian Burke, and many nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Ernest Nerison and parents preceded her in death.
"Shorty" was born April 1, 1919 in Delphos, Kansas. She married
Ernest C. Nerison in Iowa City. She was employed at Wilson's Food for 33 years. "Shorty" and Ernie loved to travel and spent many summers at their cabin on the Cedar River. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
