Robert C. Plank, 91, of Cedar Rapids died Saturday August 13, 2011 at St. Lukes Hospital after a short illness. Services with military rites at 11:00 AM on Wednesday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial on Thursday at 3:00 PM at Lakeview Memorial Park cemetery in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine, a daughter, Sue Biederman of Cedar Rapids, a son, Steven of Garden Grove, California and two sisters, Lorraine Vance of Mission, Kansas and Juanita Sumner of Eldon. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Michelle Biederman of Washington D.C, Michael Biederman of North Liberty and Courtney and Caelan Plank both of Garden Grove, California. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Dorothy and an infant daughter Virginia Ann.
Robert was born on May 20, 1920 in Eldon, the son of Charles and Fanny Russell Plank. He graduated from Eldon High School in 1938. Robert joined the Navy in 1942 and achieved the rank of Aviation Machinist Mate First Class. He was stationed at Kaneohe Bay Naval Base in Hawaii and at the Ottumwa Naval Air Station where he met his future wife, Elaine. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1946 and was united in marriage to Elaine Rhyner that same year.
In 1950 both Robert and Elaine attended and graduated from the Kansas City School of Watch Making and Jewelry Repair. In 1960 they opened and successfully ran Plank Jewelers in the former Killian Dept. Store in downtown Cedar Rapids.
He was a member of the Eldon United Methodist Church, American Legion, VFW, the Shriners and Crescent Masonic Lodge.
Robert loved to chat with people and always was there to brighten a person’s day. He was known the last several years as the “Gum Man" as he would hand out pieces of gum to those he came in contact with. He had a gift of being able to talk to anyone and make them feel special and at ease. He was totally in love with his wife of over 65 years and was a wonderful and loving father. He will be so very missed, but we are grateful for the time and life we had with him.

Mary Ellen Petersmith
Born in Estherville, Iowa on September 13, 1923
Departed on October 13, 2011. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Mary Ellen Petersmith, 88, of Cedar Rapids, died October 13th, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center. A visitation will be held from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM on Monday, October 17th, 2011 at the Immaculate Conception Church. A private family internment will take place on Monday at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery.

She is survived by her three daughters, Margie Ridler of Cedar Rapids, Kate (Tom) Modzelewski of Cedar Rapids, Celee (Mike) Philipp of Milwaukee, WI; two sons, John (Chris) Petersmith of Cedar Rapids, Jim Petersmith of Los Angeles; 13 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Robert Petersmith, and brother Fritz Foran.

Mary Ellen Petersmith was born on September 13th, 1923 in Estherville, Iowa the daughter of Francis and Margaret Howe Foran. She was united in marriage to Robert Petersmith on June 29, 1946. Together they raised five children. Mary’s greatest enjoyment was time spent with her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Food Bank.

Lena Mae Panosh
Born in Aledon, Illinois on November 28, 1921
Departed on October 17, 2011. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Lena M. Panosh, 89, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday October 17, 2011 in the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Funeral Mass: 11:00 a.m. Thursday at St. Ludmilas Catholic Church. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. The Rev. Dennis Juhl will officiate. Visitation will be today at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4-7 p.m. and after 9:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday.

Survivors include two sons, Daniel (Sue) Panosh of Denver, Colorado and Dennis (Peggy) Panosh of Cedar Rapids, a brother, Wilbur Newswander of Milan, Illinois, five grandchildren; Danielle Panosh, Nick Panosh, Jessica (Bryan) Netolicky, Chase Panosh and Kara Panosh, and two great grandchildren; Maxton Panosh and Sophia Netolicky.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Clarence C. Panosh, grandchild, Andrea Sue Panosh, a sister, Irene Hurt and brothers, Wallace and Gerald Newswander.

Lena was born November 28, 1921 in Aledo, Illinois, the daughter of Otis and Ethel Mawby Newswander. She married Clarence C. Panosh on May 30, 1942 in Cedar Rapids. Lena was owner and operator of C & L Grocery Store for 15 years in Cedar Rapids and Lena’s Friendly Tavern in Belle Plaine. She was a member of St. Ludmila Catholic Church, a volunteer for Mercy Medical Center and an avid Cubs Fan. She and Clarence loved to dance and listen to Polka music.

A memorial fund has been established by the family.

Wayne Laverne Page
Born in Delaware, Oklahoma on August 20, 1918
Departed on March 16, 2012. Resided in Marion, Iowa.

Wayne Laverne “Johnny" Page, age 93, died March 16, 2012 at Winslow House Care Center after a short illness. Johnny was born August 20, 1918 to Mayme White Page and Harmon Tyrus Page in Delaware, Oklahoma. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, the love of the life, Manon Snow Page of Winslow House Care Center. Also surviving are his children Jonathan Wayne Page of Washington State, Mary Page-Dailey and husband Richard of Midlothian, Virginia, and Glen Harmon Snow Page of Mt. Vernon, Iowa. Also surviving are grandchildren Kelly Dawn Lambert and husband Brad, Jonathan Wayne Page, II, Joshua David Page, Elric Page, Travis David Edwards and wife Jana, Gregory Tanner Edwards and wife Kara, Justin Patrick Dailey, Eric Logan Dailey, Rachel Manon Page, Catherine Page, and Keri Lynn Page. Also surviving are twelve nieces and nephews and many great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved sister Erville and his brothers Glenn, Ray, and Charles (Todd) Page. Johnny served as a deacon in the Community of Christ since 1958. As an active member of his church congregations, he served in the capacity of Boy Scout leader, church school teacher, and vocalist singing in All-City choirs, quartets, and solos.

Johnny was a proud veteran of World War II, serving in the Seabees as a metal smith with the 52nd Naval Construction Battalion on the Aleutian Islands, Hawaii and Guam. During the war years, Johnny played an integral part in planning, producing and performing in many musical productions to boost troop morale. Another important contribution to the war effort provided a solution to the dangerous task of communicating from island to island in the Pacific Theater. He conceived of and created a signaling device prototype patented and used by the Armed Forces, saving many U. S. lives.

Johnny’s professional career spanned the years of 1946 to 2008, first setting up his own sheet metal business. His expertise as a sheet metal fabricator led him to corporate positions in production control, supervision and project management for The Aluminum and Brass Foundry in Independence, Missouri; Bendix Corporation and Brooks Research and Manufacturing, both in Kansas City, Missouri; Collins Radio Company and Globe Machinery and Supply Company, both in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Heating and Supply Company in Waterloo, Iowa. After officially retiring in 1983, he began part-time work at True-Value Hardware until the age of 90 in 2008.

A memorial service will be held at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Saturday, March 24th, at 3:00 p.m. by the Rev. David Loy. The family will be available to greet guests at the end of the service. The family suggests donations be made to The Wounded Warriors Project.

Lorraine M. Phillips
Born in Marion, Iowa on August 2, 1921
Departed on February 10, 2013. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Lorraine M. Phillips, 91, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, February 10, 2013 at Living Center West. Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by Certified Celebrant Julie Freese. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. A visitation will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Lorraine is survived by her children, Patricia Doyle of Pt. Orange, FL, and Janette (Clarence) Mowery and Susan Rajtora, all of Cedar Rapids; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; and ten great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, a daughter, Barbara, and grandson, David.

Lorraine was born August 2, 1921 in Marion. She married Paul Phillips on July 17, 1939 in Anamosa. He died in 1978. Lorraine was a cook at St. Luke’s Hospital for many years, retiring in 1991. Lorraine was an avid bowler and loved working in her yard and taking walks.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Robert William Paul
Born in Center Point, Iowa on February 25, 1919
Departed on February 24, 2013. Resided in Edgewood (formerly of Greeley), Iowa.

Robert William Paul, 93, of Edgewood, formally of Greeley, Iowa died Sunday, February, 24, 2013 at the Edgewood Convalescent Home. Visitation will be held, prior to the service, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM on Friday, March 1, 2013 at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Service will be at 3:00 PM on Friday, March 1, 2013 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery.

He is survived by a son Robert J. (Freda) Paul of Edgewood; daughter Janet Letts of Greeley; two brother’s Everett (Ann) Paul of Lawrenceville, GA; Kenneth Paul of Central City; two sisters Alberta (Edward) Begley of Marion; Kathleen DeSotel of Central City; 7 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are his parents, spouse Albia Paul, 3 brothers, and son-in-law Donald Letts.

Robert Paul was born February 25, 1919 in Center Point, Iowa the son of Ernest and Ada May (Wells) Paul. He attended Marion High School. After high school he was engaged in farming and owned and operated his own live stock business. Robert married Albia Frasinger on June 16, 1940 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She preceded him in death in 1990. Through the years Robert was involved in many organizations including: Gold Wing Road Riders Association and the Southern Baptist Church. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, fishing and woodworking. Robert was a wonderful and caring husband, brother, father, and grandfather who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A memorial fund has been established.

Roberts’s family would like to thank the Edgewood Convalescent Nursing Home and the staff for their compassion and attentive care.
