Arla A. Presson, 103 of 2038 26th Street SW died Friday August 12, 2011 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy after a brief illness. Per Arla’s request there will be no service. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Jeanne Dotzauer and Judy (Gary) Svec all of Cedar Rapids, and a son, Jim of Maquoketa. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and many great and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter Jo, one brother Harris and a sister Oma.
Arla was born on January 9, 1908 in Maquoketa, the daughter of Henry and Ida Tubbs Penrose. She married
Atlee Presson at the Little brown Church in Nashua. He died in 1990. Arla was an accomplished and self taught seamstress who freely gave of her talents to both family and friends. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Russell Howard Penn, 88, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at St. Luke’s Hospital. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 3 PM at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories with a visitation beginning at 2 PM. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Russell H. Penn was born on June 19, 1923 to William and Winifred Nowakowski Penn in Detroit, Michigan. He proudly served in the US Navy during World War II. Russell was united in marriage to Shirley Smith on September 7, 1946 in Detroit, Michigan. She passed away in 2009. Russell retired from Cherry Burrell after 37 years of service. As a young adult he boxed, played tennis, hockey and played on a minor league baseball team, the Jacksonville Tars. He also was an avid square dance caller primarily for The Promenaders. Russell enjoyed woodworking and was a Mason.
He is survived by his children, Gary Penn of Hayward, CA; Dr. Cynthia (Lynn Duecker) Penn-Duecker of Piedmont, CA; Gregory (Haydee) Penn of Cypress, TX; and Sandra (Mark) Minger of Cedar Rapids; brother, Jack Penn of Holiday, FL; 8 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.
Russell is preceded in death by his parents; spouse; sister, Marge Chamberlain; and brother, William Penn.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be directed to the American Lung Association or the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight.
Carol Lenore Paul

Carol L. Paul, 81, of Cedar Rapids, died in her home Saturday July 23, 2011. Services: 11:00 am Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Visitation will be on Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4-7 pm and after 10:00 am at the chapel on Friday.
Survivors include her children; Teri (Kyle) Paul of Bluff, UT, Steven (Carla) Paul of Center Point, IA, and Curtis (Gayla) Paul of Marion, IA, and a grandson, Byrn Paul of Marion, IA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon, an infant son, Gary, a brother, Bernard Gish and a sister, Dorothy Kirkpatrick.
Carol was born July 27, 1929 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Lucian and Blanche Gish. She married
Vernon L. Paul on September 2, 1950 in Lisbon, IA. Carol was a secretary for the Grant Wood Area Education Association and the Cedar Rapids Community School District. She attended Echo Hill Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Red Hat Society.
Carol loved puzzles, was an avid reader and had a passion for crochet.
She was a volunteer at the National Czech & Slovak Museum, loved spending time with her family and enjoyed family events. Donations may be made in Carol's name to the National Czech & Slovak Museum, the American Heart Association, and PHN Ministries.
Darrell D. Potter
Born in Waterloo, Iowa on July 9, 1948
Departed on December 12, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Darrell D. Potter, 62, of Cedar Rapids died at his home on Sunday December 12, 2010 after a long illness. A gathering will be held at a later date for family and friends. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two sisters, Colleen VanSlyke of Mt. Vernon and Susan Ketcham of Cedar Rapids, two brothers, Dave of Mt. Vernon and Melvin of Fayette. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Darrell was born on July 9, 1948 in Waterloo the son of Daniel and Josephine Seago Potter. He was a mechanic for many years, working on industrial generators. He enjoyed collecting eagles, steins, coins and proudly served in the Army during the Vietnam War. A memorial fund has been established in Darrell’s name.

James “Jim” Walter Pearson Jr., 82 passed away in his home in Cedar Rapids surrounded by family on Tuesday, December 7th following an illness. Jim was born on September 9, 1928 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to James and Blanche Pearson. He married
his loving wife, Beverly on January 20, 1952 in Ames, Iowa. Together, they had 5 children: Dennis Pearson of Boulder, Colorado, Donald (Linda) Pearson of Cedar Rapids, William (Lissa) Pearson of Cedar Rapids, Kimberley Melheim of Cedar Rapids, and Jeffrey (Shelly) Pearson of Marion.
Jim was a proud member of the Marine Corps and served from 1946 to 1949. He served with the Ames Police Department for two years before moving to Cedar Rapids in 1967 when he begin working for Collins Radio as a security guard. Jim then worked at FMC and eventually retired from Rockwell Collins where he had returned to work as a security guard. Jim enjoyed coaching little league and Babe Ruth in Hiawatha for several years. He was a proud member of the VFW and the Marine Corps League.
Jim is survived by his wife, 5 children, 8 grandchildren: Corey (Jenny), Nikki, Eric, Taylor, Mitch, and Drew Pearson, Chelsea (Jason) Preston, and Lyndsey (Adam) Wright; 3 step-grandchildren; Zach, Blake, and Sydney Nielsen, 7 great-grandchildren: Nathan and Hannah Pearson, Rex and Nash Preston, and Max, Kooper, and Jett Wright, and two sisters: Betty Westmoreland of Murphy, North Carolina and Sarah Jo Swann of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Jim was preceded in death by his parents.
Jim enjoyed golfing, baseball, and trips to the casino. More so, he was a family man who enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was always making up games and coming up with new ways to entertain everyone. He had a sense of humor unlike anyone else, which was appreciated by everyone. Anyone who met Jim fell in love with him immediately. He was an incredibly lovable man with a heart of gold.
A visitation for Jim will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home Friday, December 10th from 4-7PM. Funeral services delivered by Scott Shanahan will be held at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories the following morning, Saturday, December 11th at 11AM. The family would like to thank St. Luke’s Hospice, especially Jim’s wonderful nurse Susan, for giving him such wonderful care during his final days.

Lesa Paul, 48, of 2275 C Street SW in Cedar Rapids died peacefully of natural causes surrounded by her family on Sunday November 21, 2010 at Manor Care Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Memorial services will be held at 3 PM on Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories with a visitation beginning at 2 PM. Donnita Payne Hostetler of Compassus Hospice will officiate.
Lesa was born on July 25, 1962 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Bob and Judy Paul. She was a wonderful mother and whole-heartedly devoted to her girls, MacHaley and Mariah.
Survivors include her daughters, MacHaley and Mariah and their father, Dennis Ward, of Cedar Rapids; her parents Bob and Judy Paul of Cedar Rapids; brother Robert Paul of Cedar Rapids; sister Lindy (Jon) Peterson of Montezuma; sister Kathy (Matt) Dronebarger of Cedar Rapids; brother Brian Paul of Westminster, CA; brother Justin (Michelle) Paul of Cedar Rapids; and grandparents Dorothy (Joel) Emery of Yucaipa, CA. Lesa is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Randy, nephew Nathan, niece Destiny, aunt Pat, and her grandparents.

Donald E. Phillips, 87, of Cedar Rapids died November 18, 2010, at Heritage Nursing & Rehab. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 P.M., Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories with visitation starting at 12:30.
Surviving to honor his memory are his wife, Shirley; his children, Steve Phillips, David (Brenda) Phillips of Virginia Beach, VA and Susan Finley-Phillips of Hiawatha, and Daughter-in-Law Teresa North of Mount Vernon. He also has a sister Dorothy Wendt (Don) in Waterloo and Sister-in-law, Barbara Opheim and Brother-in-law Wayne Opheim in Mason City. There are also seven grand children; Niya, Kaylee, Aubrey, Garrett, Maxwell, Jonell, Alex and 2 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Donald Eugene Phillips was born April 23, 1923, in Iowa City, the son of David and Maude (Goocher) Phillips. Donald studied music and engineering in college and was a systems engineer with Rockwell Collins for many years. He continued his passion for music playing with the symphony in earlier years and was a very active member of the Beethoven Club, IEEE, and Toastamaster\'s. For those that knew Don were very aware of his love of music and his passion for being able to sit at the piano and improvise any time the mood struck.
