Bernice J. Prunskunas, 96, of 398 Memorial Dr. SE died at her home on Thursday June 17, 2010. Funeral Mass: 10:30 AM on Thursday June, 24th at All Saints Catholic Church. Rev. David O’Connor will officiate. Friends may call at the church on Thursday where there will be a rosary recited at 9:30 AM. Inurnment at St. John’s cemetery where there will also be military rites. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include a sister, Stella Pudzuvelis, two nephews, John (Kathleen) and Peter (Pamm) Pudzuvelis all of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by a sister, Caroline Prunskunas and a brother-in-law Bill Pudzuvelis.
Bernice was born on June 13, 1914 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Peter and Marcella Garbarovich Prunskunas. She graduated from St. Patrick High School in 1932 and from Mercy School of Nursing. For six years she worked for Dr. Arthur Erskine, a pioneer in x-ray technology and cancer patient care. When WW11 broke out, Bernice and her sister, Caroline joined the Navy Nurse Corps. They were stationed in Attu in the Aleutian Islands from 1943-45. While Caroline made a career of the Navy, Bernice returned home where she made her career as a registered nurse at First Avenue X-Ray Office. She joined the Naval Reserve and retired twenty one years later with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After Caroline retired from the Navy, she and Bernice lived together for many years. Bernice was a member of All Saints Catholic Church where many of her friendships were formed. She enjoyed decorating the church for the holidays and organizing crafts bazaars. Bernice cared for Caroline during her long illness until her death and when Stella lost her husband, Bill, she invited Stella into her home. Bernice truly led a life of service to her country, church and family and will be dearly missed. Memorial donations may be given to All Saints Catholic Church or the charity of the donor’s choice. “The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Dr. Schroeder, Hospice and the Iowa City VA for the wonderful care given to Bernice.”

Ralph F. Purdy

Ralph F. Purdy, 84, of Cedar Rapids, died on Friday, May 28, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Funeral Mass: 10:30 AM on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at St. Pius X Catholic Church by the Rev. Donald Klein. Burial with military honors will be in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call from 4 until 7 PM on Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years Frances; children Barbara Kohn of Wauwatosa, WI, Jeffrey Purdy and his wife Carolyn of Camarillo, CA, Laurie Cover and her husband Brian of Iowa City, IA, and Dennis Purdy and his wife Janelle of Solon, IA; eight grandchildren Christopher Kohn and his wife Hallie, Andrew Kohn, Jessica and Valerie Purdy, Mathew and Michael Cover, Rachel and Kristen Purdy; and two great grandsons Oliver and Marlon Kohn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Richard Purdy, and a sister Bev Delancey.

Ralph was born June 23, 1925 in Mitchell, SD the son of Ralph and Wilhelmina (Roth) Purdy. After graduating from Mitchell High School, Ralph enlisted in the Navy in July of 1943 and was discharged in 1946. Ralph married his wife Frances in Cedar Rapids on July 31, 1950 and worked at Rockwell Collins for 36 years in the Engineering Lab. Ralph enjoyed and appreciated his job and the people that he worked with. Frances and Ralph belonged to two ballroom dance clubs and took dance lessons from Anita Douglas for many years for exercise and fun. Ralph also rode a bike to work for 20 years and enjoyed that very much. Frances and Ralph had a great time with their children and grandchildren, attending events that their kids participated in.

After retiring, Ralph and Frances traveled to visit their kids and Ralph enjoyed eating out with small groups of good friends every week. He was also a character member of St. Pius X and followed Hawkeye sports for years.

Memorials may be directed to St. Pius X Catholic Church in Ralph’s name.

Eva B. Popper
Born in Waltham, Iowa on October 1, 1910

Eva B. Popper, 99, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at her daughter’s home in Manassas, VA. Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM, Friday, June 4, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Lloyd Brockmeyer of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery.

Survivors include one son, Dennis Popper and his wife Roxie of The Villages, Florida; one daughter Cindy Ragan and husband, Bob Simon of Manassas, Virginia; three grandsons, Tim Popper and wife Sue of Ashburn, Virginia, Todd Popper and wife Tammy of Englewood, Ohio and Christopher Simon of Manassas, Virginia; one great granddaughter, Heidi Brannam of Fairborn, OH; and one sister, Dorothy Dvorak of Davenport, Iowa.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Henry Popper whom she married in June 1936 and by eight brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Popper was born October 1, 1910 in Waltham, Iowa, daughter of the late James and Julia (Kokesh) Karkosh. She was a graduate of Iowa State Teacher’s College and taught school in Tama County, Iowa. Mrs. Popper was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 1340 Third Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52401.

David Paxton Jr.

David Paxton Jr., of Cedar Rapids, passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital, Tuesday, May 11, 2010. Services: 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church by the Rev. Gary Hoyt. Interment: 2:30 p.m. at Memorial Lawn cemetery, Ottumwa, with military and Masonic rites. A visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel.

Survivors include his wife, Louise; sons, Dan (Donnette) Paxton of Central City, and Larry (Mary) Paxton of Cedar Rapids; twin brother, Phil (Mary Louise) Paxton of Hedrick; grandchildren, Sarah (Vince) Paxton Hyman, Christopher Paxton, Johnathan (Brandi) Paxton, Nicholas (Brenda) Paxton, and Stephen Paxton; great grandson, Paxton Reese Hyman. David was preceded in death by his parents, son, Steven, daughter, Janis Paxton; brothers, Loyal Roop and Merritt Paxton; sisters, Letha Roop and Patsy Paxton.

David was born September 27, 1925 in Ollie, IA to David and Edythe (Sonner) Paxton. He graduated from Hedrick High School in 1943 and attended Central College in Pella. David then served as a paratrooper in the United States Army from 1944 to 1946 during World War II in Europe. He married Margaret Louise Campbell on August 3, 1947 in Martinsburg, IA. He worked at People’s Bank in Cedar Rapids from 1965 to 1987, serving as Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager. David enjoyed trout fishing, camping, bowling, bird feeding/watching and beekeeping. He was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 50 year Masonic Lodge member, and Eastside Kiwanis.

Memorials may be directed to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 4700 Johnson Avenue NW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52405 or the American Cancer Society, 4080 – 1st Avenue NE, Ste 101, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402

Betty Irene Price
Born in Cedar Rapids, IA on February 18, 1947
Departed on March 29, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Betty I. Price, 63, of 2518 Scottsdale St SW, died Monday March 29, 2010. Memorial Services: 3:00 P.M. Friday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel, where a gathering will be on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. The Rev. William B. Harnish will officiate.

Survivors include her husband, Gregory W. Price, two sons, Curtis D. (Candy) Clark of Cedar Rapids, and James M. (Darla) Clark of Farmington, New Mexico, two daughters, Dawn Renee Starr of Cedar Rapids, and Penny E. (Jason) Thompson of Hiawatha, 13 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Renee Clark.

Betty was born February 18, 1947 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Vernal and DeLores Burrier Chesmore. She married Gregory Warren Price on January 4, 1991 in Cedar Rapids. Betty worked for the Cedar Rapids School System. She enjoyed cooking, camping, traveling, shopping and growing plants. Her favorite was spending time with family and grandchildren and her beloved dogs.

A memorial fund has been established.

Richard Allen Polton
Born in Columbus City, Iowa on December 22, 1922
Departed on March 16, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Richard Allen “Dick” Polton, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, March 16, 2010, in St. Luke's Hospital. Memorial services with Masonic Rites will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday in St. James United Methodist Church. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Survivors include two sons William “Bill” Polton and wife Cherri of Cedar Rapids, and Steven Polton and wife Stacey of Columbia, Missouri, a daughter Gail Johnson of Lucerne, California, a brother Guy Polton and wife Joyce of Cedar Rapids, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his special friend Mary Koopman. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a daughter Rebecca “Becky” Polton, three sisters Jean, Mildred, and Becky, and a brother Don.

Dick was born December 22, 1922, in Columbus City, Iowa to Joseph and Lois Troxel Polton. He married Betty Yule on November 7, 1948 in Marshalltown, Iowa. She died in 2002. He was a US Army Veteran. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church, Mt. Hermon Masonic Lodge, and a Halleluiah Acres Health Minister.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

Stanton L. Priske
Born in Eldora, Iowa on September 2, 1940
Departed on March 15, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Stanton L. Priske, 69, died Monday, March 15th, 2010, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha, following a brief illness. Services will be held Saturday, March 20th at the Church on Northland, First Baptist Church of the Brethren. Visitation will be held at 10am followed by memorial services at 11am.

Stan was born September 2nd, 1940, son of Harold and Mariam Priske of Eldora, Iowa. He remained a lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids. Iowa, for 47 years after marrying his wife Karen (Mitchell) Priske. Survivors include his wife, Karen, son Todd Priske, his children, Brandon, T.J., and Angelina of Cedar Rapids; Marc Priske and wife Jennifer, daughter Olivia, residing in Kettering, Ohio; Stan’s Father, Harold Priske of Eldora, Iowa. Stan was also survived by his brother Steve and wife Linda Priske and their three sons and families; also surviving much loved Labradors Ike and Abby along with a myriad of loving and loyal friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother Miriam, and his Labrador companions, Brandy, Cher, Turbo, Blue, Cash, Brave, and Annie.

Stan graduated from Eldora High School, receiving a golf scholarship at Iowa Wesleyan, in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, where he graduated in 1962 with a B.A. in marketing. He married his wife, Karen Mitchell, on September 8th, 1962. He was a letterman in basketball and golf.

As a young man, Stan was driven by an entrepreneurial spirit and after two years of employment with Collins Radio he and two work associates founded Three Arts Advertising, Inc. This agency brought with it countless friends and clients who forged long running business and social relationships that were premised off core values of loyalty and commitment, with an emphasis on fun. He served as President and later CEO for Three Arts Advertising, Inc. for 45 years until his retirement in 2007.

Stan, was often depicted as “a man’s man”. He possessed a quick witted and sharp sense of humor and he inter-related well with people from all walks of life. He was a man without pretense and throughout his life he treated others with mutual respect, the courtesy of active listening, and was often sought out for his business acumen and advice. Stan was contemplative and could often be seen stroking his mustache as he processed and pondered what was being said.

Throughout his life, Stan was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for golfing, hunting, fishing, and boating. He spent much of his leisure time field trialing and running his black labs. He and his wife enjoyed boating on the Mississippi in McGregor, Iowa, and he loved making excursions to his commercial camp on Gammon Lake in Canada, where he fished for Walleye and Northern Pike. He enjoyed grilling, debating and philosophical discussion, traveling, anything that was competitive. Stan typically demonstrated an alpha male mentality which often entailed lots of programming, feedback, and ongoing direction to his friends and family. Stan was a sports fanatic and loved country music, the camaraderie of his companions, both people and pets.

The family extends their sincerest gratitude for the compassionate care provided by Dr. Ghosh and the staff at Iowa Blood and Cancer Care, Mercy Hospice, and the Dennis and Donald Oldorf Hospice House. Memorials may be made to the Anna Purna Ghosh Foundation which provides financial assistance for cancer treatment.
