Maxine C. Hanson (1920-2006)
CEDAR FALLS -- Maxine C. Hanson, 85, of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, April 12, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Hanson-4-13 Home.
She was born July 2, 1920, in Cedar Falls, daughter of Harold S. and Chrystal V. McKee Anderson. She married Vernon C. Hanson Feb. 14, 1942, in Waterloo. He died Feb. 12, 1960.
She graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1938, and in 1940 she graduated from Iowa State Teachers College, now UNI. She taught school in Alexander from 1940 to 1942 and later became a librarian for the command-general staff at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.
Survived by: a son, Eric V. of Des Moines; and a nephew she raised, Dan L. Hanson of Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home Chapel, with inurnment at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery. Public visitation for an hour before services Saturday at the chapel. Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John C. Heinick (1926-2006)
WATERLOO -- John C. Heinick, 79, of South Pasadena, Fla., formerly of Waterloo and Jesup, died Sunday, April 9, at Palms of Pasadena Hospital, South Pasadena, following a short illness.
He was born Dec. 25, 1926, in Waterloo, son of Harry Sr. and Eleanor Bellick Heinick. On Aug. 1, 1959, he married Bernice Katherine Schuler at St. Athanasius Catholic Church in Jesup.
Mr. Heinick attended school in Waterloo, then served in the U.S. Army. He worked at John Deere foundry and then at Rath Packing Co., then returned to John Deere where he worked on the assembly production line, retiring in 1987.
Survived by: his wife.
Preceded in death by: three brothers, Harry Jr., Joseph and Frank; and two sisters, Mary O'Rourke and an infant.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, with burial in the church cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Pump-Scheer American Legion Post 342 of Jesup. Public visitation 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at White Funeral Home, Jesup, where there will be a 7 p.m. parish rosary. Visitation also for an hour before services Monday at the church.

Fred Hoffman (1910-2006)
CEDAR FALLS -- Fred Hoffman, 96, of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, April 11, at Windsor Nursing & Rehab Center of natural causes.
He was born March 12, 1910, in Trenton, Ill., son of Frank and Emma Marie John Hoffman. He married Leona T. Beckfield on Sept. 7, 1937, in Rochester, Minn. She died Dec. 12, 2000.
Mr. Hoffman and his wife farmed near Jesup for many years, retiring to Waterloo in the early 1970s.
Survivors include: two daughters, Doris Remington of Dubuque and Ruth (Doyle) Bass of Cedar Falls; a sister, Clara Ballard of New Baden, Ill.; four grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: his parents; stepmother, Martha John; a great-granddaughter, Gabrielle; seven brothers, Gus, Frank Jr., Pete, Henry, Otto, Max and Erwin; and three sisters, Ida Witt, Emma Klein and Carlie Hoffman.
Services: 1:30 p.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with burial in Garden of Memories, both in Waterloo. Public visitation 5 to 7 p.m. today at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service.

Harold A. Knight (1917-2006)
CEDAR FALLS -- Harold Arthur Knight, 88, of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, April 11, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of complications following surgery.
He was born Oct. 2, 1917, in Moravia, son of Sherman and Dora Klinger Knight. He married Hazel B. Rush Oct. 31, 1938, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. She preceded him in death Aug. 13, 1987. He then married Marianna Moss Phelps Nov. 10, 1990, in Cedar Falls. She preceded him in death May 8, 1999. He then married Jessie Loy Richter Aug. 25, 2004, in Cedar Falls.
He graduated from Gladbrook High School in 1934 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II at Okinawa. Mr. Knight worked in printing his entire life, first with Derry & Williams Printing Co. then at Stewart Simmons, both in Waterloo, before moving to Urbandale in 1958 where he owned and operated Art-O-Type Services and then Knight's Typography until retiring in 1986.
He was a member of St. Timothys United Methodist Church, was an officer of IOOF, Waterloo, past president of the Printing Industry of Iowa in Des Moines, past president of Des Moines Craftsman Club, and the Des Moines Stamp Club.
Survived by: his wife; two sons, Dennis (Linda) of Urbandale and Randall (Roberta) of Bondurant; three daughters, June (David) Niedert of Cedar Falls, Sharon (Richard) Poffenberger of Bondurant and Jennifer Leila Sylvester of Missouri Valley; seven stepchildren; 14 grandchildren, Michelle (Randy) Cook, Lisa Niedert, Michael Niedert, Tammy (Paul) St. Onge, Melissa (Darren) Miyamura, Brian (Tamm) Poffenberger, Julie Hansen, Tom (Emily) Roberts, Bill (Becky) Burwinkel, Kelsey Knight, Jason (Kristen) Knight, Justin Knight, Jesse Knight and Megan Knight; 16 stepgrandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and a brother, Howard (Rosalind) of Marshalltown.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Timothys United Methodist Church, Cedar Falls, with burial in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Military rites will be conducted by Becker-Chapman Post 138 American Legion and Waterloo Post 1623 Veterans of Foreign Wars. NE Iowa Deaths Vincent E. Goebel (1945-2006)
NEW HAMPTON -- Vincent Edward Goebel, 60, of Minneapolis, formerly of New Hampton, died March 3 in Harlingen, Texas, of natural causes.
He was born Aug. 21, 1945, in New Hampton, son of Abraham and Bertha Hughbanks Goebel.
Survivors include: two sons, Nickalaus (Ashley) of Minneapolis and Michael (Danielle) of Lake City, Minn.; five grandchildren; five brothers, Arnold (Carol) of Denver, Kenny (Kathy) of New Hampton, Reynold (Beverly) of Reinbeck, Ervin of Brainerd, Minn., and Ralph (Mary) of Ames; and three sisters, Mary Huebner of Byron, Minn., JoAnn (Robert) Johnson of Elgin, Ill., and Alice Jane (Bart) Murphy of Justice, Ill.
Preceded in death by: his parents; six brothers, Jim, Dennis, Richard, William, Thomas and Bob; and a sister, Lois Ann Goebel.

Virgil E. Sellers (1918-2006)
WATERLOO -- Virgil E. Sellers, 88, of Earlville, formerly of Marion and Waterloo, died Monday, April 10, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, after a brief illness.
He was born Feb. 27, 1918, in Melrose, son of Everette and Cora Sims Sellers. On Nov. 7, 1942, he married Bernice Ida Taylor in Charlotte, S.C. She died Jan. 31, 1988. He later married Verda Belle Hunt on June 11, 1995, in Earlville.
Mr. Sellers graduated from Goodell High School in 1937, then worked as a farm hand and performed local flying services. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1940 and flew 65 bombing missions during World War II. He also was a flight instructor and served during the Korean War. He retired as a major from the U.S. Air Force in 1962 after 22 years of service. In 1963, he returned to Iowa and attended the College of Automation in Des Moines. He worked for Collins Radio Co., Cedar Rapids, until 1970. He then delivered mobile homes for Morgan Drive-Away. In 1974, he became a partner in Creataform, Ltd., Cedar Falls, retiring from there in 1981.
Survivors include: his wife, who died April 11, 2006; two daughters, Virginia (Ron) Hovick of Waterloo and Linda (Jim) Singer of Lindstrom, Minn.; a stepdaughter, Carol (Don) Mosier of Cedar Rapids; a stepson, Calvin (Sharon) Hunt of Kimberling City, Mo.; eight grandchildren and three great-granddaughters; three brothers, Donald of Hanlontown, Robert of Mason City and Carl (Joan) Sellers of Bemus Point, N.Y.; and a sister, Mary Nolte of Russell.
Preceded in death by: a brother, Burdette.
Services: 1:30 p.m. Friday at Earlville United Parish, with committal services and military honors at 4 p.m. in Garden of Memories, Waterloo. Public visitation 4 to 8 p.m. today at Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Earlville, with a 7 p.m. Order of Eastern Star service and an 8 p.m. Masonic service. Visitation also for an hour before services Friday at the church.

Marvin Buckmaster (1940-2006)
OELWEIN -- J. Marvin "Buck" Buckmaster, 65, of Oelwein, died Tuesday, April 11, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of complications from thyroid cancer.
He was born Oct. 24, 1940, in Albany, rural Fayette County, son of Jesse Oliver and Amy Stout Buckmaster. He married Judith Ann Weidemann Dec. 3, 1961, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hawkeye.
He graduated from Fayette High School in 1958 and worked for many local businesses in the Fayette area. In 1958 he started at Strang's Tire Co., Oelwein, where he remained for 42 years, retiring in 2000 for health reasons.
Survived by: his wife; a son, Larry of Fayette; a daughter, Julie (Mike) Bohr of Castalia; and four grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: his parents.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hawkeye, with burial in Lima Cemetery, rural Fayette. Public visitation from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, and for an hour before services Saturday at the church.
LaVon E. Diekman (1923-2006)
APLINGTON -- LaVon E. Diekman, 82, of Aplington, died Wednesday, April 12, at Maple Manor Care Center, Aplington, of natural causes.
She was born Oct. 7, 1923, in rural Butler County near Aplington, daughter of Harm H. and Mary Brinkman Uhlenhopp. She married Ervin Loyal Diekman on March 28, 1943, in Junction City, Kan. He died Dec. 24, 2003.
Mrs. Diekman graduated from Aplington High School in 1941. She worked at Ervin and Wayne Diekman family's grocery store in Aplington.
Survivors include: a son, Terrill (Denice) of Hudson; a son-in-law, Marvin Lindaman of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Aleasa Kampman, LaVera (Abe) Cuvelier and Shirley Graham, all of Aplington.
Preceded in death by: a daughter, Sharon Lindaman; and an infant brother.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hitesville Gospel Hall, with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery, both in Aplington. Public visitation 4 to 8 p.m. today at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington.

Doris I. Sheller (1921-2006)
ELDORA -- Doris I. "Dorie" Sheller, 84, of rural Eldora, died Tuesday, April 11, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital, Grundy Center, from complications of heart disease.
She was born Aug. 19, 1921, in Melrose Township, rural Grundy County, daughter of Glen Lohr and Ruth Mae Schwab Sheller.
She graduated from Whitten High School in 1939 and worked at the Grundy Hemp Mill in Grundy Center during World War II. She had been caretaker of the Sheller Cemetery and custodian of Ivester Church of the Brethren for many years.
Survived by: three sisters, Myrtle Morland of Pueblo, Colo., Emma Hess of Pipestone, Minn., and ImoJean (Merlin) Frantz of McPherson, Kan.; and a sister-in-law, Velma Sheller of Marshalltown.
Preceded in death by: a brother, Charles Sheller.
Services: 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Ivester Church of the Brethren, rural Grundy Center, with burial at Sheller Cemetery, rural Eldora. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Doyen-Abels Funeral Home, Wellsburg, with the family present, and from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Scott Y. Trowbridge (1961-2006)
Scott Y. Trowbridge, 45, of Independence, Mo., passed away April 11 at MCI Hospital. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. today at Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs, Mo. Services will follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel. Internment will be in Blue Springs Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to Angela Trowbridge for the Kansas City Stars Hockey Club Scholarship Fund in Scott's memory.
Scott was born on March 12, 1961, to Carl C. and W. Patricia (Brown) Trowbridge in Ponca City, Okla. He was employed as a Journeyman Plumber for AD Jacobson.
Scott was a member of the Plumbers Local #8 and also coached youth hockey for the Kansas City Stars.
He was preceded in death by his father, Carl C. Trowbridge.
Survivors include his wife, Angela, of the home; two sons, Bryson C. Trowbridge and Riley T. Trowbridge, both at home; his mother, W. Patricia Ball; a brother, Bryan R. Trowbridge of Tempe Ariz.; and a sister, Julia Ann Trowbridge of Redding, Calif.

Mary C. Suhr (1910-2006)
WATERLOO -- Mary C. Suhr, 95, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, April 11, at Allen Hospital of natural causes.
She was born April 18, 1910, in Butler, Minn., Ottertail County, daughter of Henry Jason and Burma Eliza Goodsell. On Oct. 22, 1927, she married Don Goodsell in Charles City, and they later divorced. On April 11, 1936, she married Claude Belden Wilson in Clarksville. He preceded her in death. On Nov. 15, 1952, she married Oscar Suhr. He died in 1966.
Mrs. Suhr was employed at Lamson Hotel and the Hickory House Restaurant.
Survivors include: three sons, Westley Goodsell of Yuma, Ariz., Russ Goodsell of Evansdale and Edward John Wilson of Waterloo; a daughter, Maxine Lincoln of Strawberry Point; 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Julia Ginther of Manchester; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, with burial in Garden of Memories. Public visitation 4 to 7 p.m. today at the chapel.

Milo N. "Mike" Grandon (1925-2006)
JANESVILLE -- Milo N. "Mike" Grandon, 81, of Janesville, died Wednesday, April 12, at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center, Shell Rock.
He was born Feb. 20, 1925, in Cedar Falls, son of Arthur and Jesse Marks Grandon. He married Marjorie A. Reinke on April 23, 1955, in Miami, Okla.
Mr. Grandon attended Finchford and Cedar Falls schools and graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1942. He was employed at John Deere & Co., Waterloo, for 33 years; farmed in Black Hawk County; and had been owner/broker, along with his wife, of Midtown Realty in Janesville for the last 28 years. He was a member of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Board of Realtors for 26 years and also a member of the Waterloo Elks Club for 42 years.
Survivors include: his wife; a son, Monte of Sunny Isles Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Robbin (Wes) Sorge of Janesville and Linda (Will) Hyde of Homestead, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Jackie (Robert) Zrostlik of Waterloo; four grandchildren, Talere and Kendyl Sorge, and Robert and Nicole Woock; three stepgrandchildren, Scott and Chad Schaefer, and Amy Schlung; two brothers, Jess of Cedar Falls and Lloyd (Pat) of Dike; and three sisters, Betty (Max) Ward of Cedar Falls, Alberta Jepsen of Omaha, Neb., and Wanda Boysen of Waterloo.
Preceded in death by: two brothers, Linford and Walter.
