Betty Ann Rue, 71, of Hiawatha, died at the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Wednesday, December 15, 2010. Celebration of Life: 1 p.m. Sunday at the Bali Hi Rec Center, 250 Tiki Terrace, Hiawatha by Hospice of Mercy Chaplain Linda Streit. Private graveside services: Waterloo Memorial Park cemetery.
Betty is survived by children, Kevin of Waterloo and Theresa (Tom) Lemon of Clarksville; four grandchildren, Joseph Rue, Aaron, Jared, and Anna Lemon; two sisters; and a brother. She was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings.
Betty was born April 20, 1939 in Parkersburg to Fred and Emma Kusian. She married
Richard Rue there on October 2, 1959. She worked for Allen Hospital for many years and later did in-home care in Cedar Rapids. She and her husband owned and operated Action Pest Control. Betty was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother who devoted her life to her family and friends. She loved to work in her flower garden and decorate her home.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

Barbara J. Ross, of Cedar Rapids, died at home Sunday, July 25, 2010. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. A visitation will be held Wednesday at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. and after 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the chapel.
Survivors include her husband, Marty; children, Tom (Candy) Ross of Shueyville, Amy Schmitt of Cedar Rapids, and Marty (Diana) Collins of Waterloo; sisters, Sandi (Tony) Ahomana, Karen Waddell, and Carol (Don) Lacy, all of Cedar Rapids; brother, Bob (Pat) Gehrke of Iowa Falls; brother-in-law, Craig Ross; grandchildren, Nick, Travis, Morgan, Zach, Jenna, Cassidy, Crystal, and Mason; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law Matt Schmitt, mother-in-law Geraldine Ross and brother-in-law Larry Ross.
Barb was born on June 11, 1946 in Elma to Robert and Norma Vick Mathews. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1965. Barb married
Marty Ross in Cedar Rapids on December 7, 1968. Barb was employed by Hy Vee Grocery Stores, retiring in 2008. Her interests included cooking – especially Sunday dinners for her family. She loved to travel to Las Vegas with Marty to gamble.

John Leo Robe, 83, died peacefully Saturday, June 12, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital surrounded by family after several months of loving care at Linn Manor Care nursing home. Funeral mass will be at All Saints Catholic Church on Wednesday, June 16, at 10:30AM. Vigil service and visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5:00-7:30 PM at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids, IA. Visitation and rosary will also be available one hour preceding the funeral mass. Entombment will be at Cedar Memorial cemetery.
John was born June 28, 1926, in Lamoure, ND to Nicholas “Nick” and Selma (Schmidt) Robe. His father was a harness maker and owned a candy store. 1932 they moved to Shoreham, MN. John attended grade school and high school in Detroit Lakes. His father ran a grocery store and liquor store while John rented bicycles and helped in the store.
After graduating from high school in 1944, John went to work as a truck driver for Nash Finch and in 1946 became a traveling salesman covering the North Dakota district. In October 1950, John joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War as a sergeant in charge of ammunition distribution. He completed his service in October 1952 and return to work for Nash Finch as a salesman. After several positions and transfers within Nash Finch, he moved to Cedar Rapids in 1969. He retired from Nash Finch in 1982.
While serving in the army, John’s friends, DeWayne and Nonie Mansager, urged him to begin writing to Joanne Brennan, then a first grade teacher in Williams, MN. After many letters and several visits while on leave, the two felt they were meant to be a couple and were married
on October 28, 1952 in Wilton, MN.
John enjoyed playing tennis with his children, photographing his family and nature, and making wooden furniture and toys for family and friends. He also enjoyed camping and swimming with his family, never tiring of tossing them up to do somersaults into the water.
His loving family consists of his wife, Joanne, his sister, Bernice of Detroit Lakes, MN and his children, Andrew (deceased), Joel Robe (Carol), Susan Murdock (Ronald), Bernard (Diane), Mary McAleer (Timothy), Matthew (Vanessa) and Monica Misenar; Grandchildren, Nicholas, Brian, Andrea, Adam, Brandon, Christopher, Kristian, Peter, and Joseph.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Hospice of St. Luke’s or Linn Manor Care.

Nettie Reed, 95, of Cedar Rapids, was ushered into the Kingdom of God, Monday, May 31, 2010. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by Pastor Dale Holloway. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. A visitation will be held at the funeral home Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m.
Survivors include children, Charlotte Null of Marion, Phyllis (Robert) Stevens of Cedar Rapids, and Warren Reed of Troy Mills; a sister, Bertha Schleicher of PA; grandchildren, Jeffery, Scott, Rodney, Larry, Tracey, Kevin, Robin, Ranie, and Rachel; nine great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Russell; four brothers; and a sister.
Nettie was born April 24, 1915 in Princeton. She married
Russell Lee Reed in Chicago, IL on June 26, 1937. He died in 1987. She was employed by the Cedar Rapids School System for over 27 years. She was a woman of compassion, love and friendship to all who knew her. Some knew her as the Energizer Bunny that kept going and going. She was a member of Living Hope Wesleyan Church. The things she loved to do in life were fishing, knitting, machine embroidery, and gardening. She was always ready to go with family and friends.

J. Norman Rooney, 92, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at Northbrook Manor Care Center. A Celebration of Norms life will be held at 11 AM Friday, May 28, 2010, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church. Rev. Mark Osterhaus will officiate. Visitation will be held on Thursday in Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 8 PM with a Rosary beginning at 4:30 PM, and at the church after 10 AM Friday. Burial with military honors will be at Mount Calvary cemetery. in Cedar Rapids.
Norm is survived by three sons Jim (Karen) Rooney and Tim (Sheila) Rooney all of Cedar Rapids, and Kevin (Connie) Rooney of Minneapolis, MN; two daughters Marilyn (Frank) Fish of Naperville, Il, and Kathy Heidelberg of Minneapolis, MN. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, Michael (Molly) Rooney, Brian (Rachel) Rooney, David (Holly) Rooney, Colin Rooney, Noel Rooney, Callie Rooney, Shalene Rooney, Breana (Nick) Walton, Lori (Brett) Raasch, Katie Fish, Ann Fish, Stephanie (Augie) Gureno, Colleen Fish, Erin (Darrel) Laczynski, James Heidelberg, Travis Heidelberg, Marcus Heidelberg, Justin Heidelberg, and Sarah (Jamie) Wozniak; 14 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, sister Margaret Hake of Cedar Rapids, and his brother Ray Rooney of Perry, Ia. He was preceded in death by a son Michael in 1979, his parents, and his wife.
Norm was born May 11, 1918 in Perry, Iowa to James L. and June Lyons Rooney. He married
Helen Cuddy on June 22, 1940 in Jefferson, Iowa. She passed away May 13, 2008. He was a US Army Veteran of WW II and received a purple heart. They made their home in Jefferson, and then moved to Cedar Rapids in 1958. He was sales manager for the Vestal Chemical Company. He was a member of St. Matthew’s Parish. He enjoyed golf, woodworking, and his many travels with his wife, family, and friends.
Norms quick wit and smile will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Military honors by Iowa Military Funeral Honors and Hanford American Legion Post No 5.

Geraldine I. Ross, 91, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Waterloo, died April 21, 2010 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy following a short illness. Memorial services will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 24, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel. Inurnment will take place at 3:30 PM, Saturday, at Garden of Memories cemetery, Waterloo.
Surviving are her sons Martin Ross and wife Barb, and Craig Ross all of Cedar Rapids; her sister Sandra Plotz of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren Martin Collins and wife Diana of Waterloo, Angie Erenberger and husband Tim of Cedar Rapids, Thomas Ross and wife Candy of Shueyville, Amy Schmitt of Cedar Rapids, and Addie Ross of Iowa City; 8 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas; sons Thomas (Larry) Ross and Ronald Ray Ross; a brother Roland; and grandson-in-law Matt Schmitt.
Geraldine Izetta Ross was born November 29, 1918 in Cedar Rapids the daughter of Grover and Addie (Parker) Foggy. She married
Thomas Ross on July 18, 1937 in Cedar Rapids, they later moved to Waterloo. She was employed for several years at Powers Manufacturing in Waterloo, and later at Willow Gardens Care Center in Marion. She was previously a member of First Presbyterian Church in Waterloo. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and reading. Her greatest enjoyment was time spent with family, especially her grandchildren.
Memorial donations in Geraldine’s honor may be made to Hospice of Mercy.
