Zachary A. Taggart, of Jacksonville, FL departed his life unexpectedly, due to complications of Cerebral Palsy, on Thursday, September 10, 2009, at the age of 16. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids. Rev. Ron Lewis will officiate. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 18, 2009 from 4:00 p.m. till 7:00 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery.
Survivors include his mother Stacy (Eddy) Burgin of Jacksonville, FL; sisters Alyson Taggart (Ryan) of Cedar Rapids, and Edie Taggart (Jonny) of Jacksonville, FL; grandparents Joyce Stewart of Vinton, IA, Eva Taggart of Cedar Rapids, and David Stewart of Vinton, IA; plus several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Preceding Zachary in death is a brother Travis Taggart in June of 1989.
Zachary Alan Taggart was born June 20, 1993 in Iowa City, IA. He loved all music, NASCAR, television shows Cops and the Prices Right, and had a wonderful love for his sisters Alyson and Edie.

Leora L. York

Leora L. York, 92, of 1016 34th Street NE, died at home Sunday, November 5, 2006, after a long illness. Graveside Services: Wednesday at Oak Hill cemetery by Rev. Brian Fink of the River of Life Worship Center. Turner West is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter, C. Virginia Lindeman of Cedar Rapids; and three sons, James Jennie York of Reston, VA, Richard Maggie York of Cedar Rapids, and Carson York of Tucson, AZ.; 11 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
Leora was preceded in death by her brother, Elmer Waller and a sister, Sylvia Waltz.
Leora was born August 5, 1914 in Cedar Rapids to Raymond and Goldie McNabb Waller. She married
James C. York there on January 5, 1931. He died in 1965. Leora worked at the Meth-Wick community for many years.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Mercy. The family would like to thank Hospice of Mercy for their exceptional care, kindness and support.

Chester 'Chet' L. Smith, 76, of 1289 Apache Dr, Marion, died Monday November 22, 2004 in Mercy Medical Center following a short illness. Services: 9:00 a.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories by the Rev. William B. Harnish. Burial: Floral Garden cemetery, Oelwein. Friends may call on Cedar Memorial Funeral Home on Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and after 8:30 a.m. at the chapel on Saturday.
Survivors include his wife Betty Smith, two sons, Dennis Smith Ruth of Las Vegas, and Michael Smith Nancy of Cedar Rapids, three daughters, Sandra Sue Long Robert of Anamosa, Jane Speck John of Urbandale and Lisa Brown J.B. of Cedar Rapids, a sister, Betty Schweitzer Max of Winter Haven, Florida, two brothers, Richard Smith of Manchester and Darold Smith Linda of Jessup.
Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
His parents preceded him in death.
Chester was born July 3, 1928 in Nashua, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Elizabeth Adams Smith. He married
Betty McClain on November 7, 1949 in Sumner. Chester was employed at Quaker Oats in packaging for 28 years. He was a member of the American Legion in Fairfax and the Eagles Club in Tama. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan since 1935. He enjoyed fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A memorial fund has been established by the family.
Warren A. Strait

Warren A. Strait, 79, of 3903 Mt. Vernon Road SE died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004 at St. Lukes Hospital after a long illness. Services at 1 PM on Sat. at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories where there will also be military rites. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Friday.
He is survived by his four children, Becky and her husband, Dave of Colorado and Florida, Chuck and his wife, Elaine of Colorado, Susan and her former husband, Jerry of Cedar Rapids and a son Tim of Hiawatha. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, his brother in law, Thomas McDermott Jr. of Cedar Rapids and Arizona and nieces and nephews as well as his faithful golden retriever, 'Fancy'. He was preceded in death by his parents, 6 brothers, his beloved wife of 55 years, Becky and great grandson, Christopher Skaggs.
Warren was born on Nov. 11, 1924 in Keosauqua, the son of Victor and Carabella Parson Strait. He served in the United States Navy on a submarine in the Pacific Theatre from 1941 to 1943. He married
his wife, Becky, on June 28, 1947. He proudly provided for his family as a professional truck driver for Rock Island Motor transit from which he retired. He was a member of American Legion Hanford Post No. 5 and the Teamsters Union. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He and his wife owned a cabin on the Mississippi River where they spent many memorable summers with their family and friends. Warren's life was no ordinary LIFE. This was a life well lived and well loved, a life that will be deeply missed by his loved ones. Memorial donations may be given to the American Cancer Society in Warren's name. Military rites by American Legion Hanford Post No. 5.

Edward J. Whisler, 83, 3237 Dalewood Ave SE died Monday October 7, 2002 at Mercy Hallmar of cancer. Services: 1:00 P.M. Friday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery with military rites by Marion American Legion Post #298. Friends may call from 5 to 8 PM Thursday at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home where the Elks Lodge will have services at 6:00 PM and Crescent Masonic Lodge #25 will have services at 6:30 PM. The Rev. William Harnish and The Rev. Ted Bohr will officiate.
He is survived by his daughter, Margaret 'Peggy' Bohr and husband Jim of Cedar Rapids; three granddaughters, Kristin Collins of Cedar Rapids, Tasha Everman and husband Brian of Lincoln, NE, and Amy Bohr and fianc? Brooks West of Minneapolis, MN; two great grandchildren, Andy and Macie Collins of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Mary Gradwell and husband Max of Cedar Rapids; several nieces and nephews; an uncle, J.J. Taylor of California; and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife of 47 years, Grace Curran.
Ed was born December 26, 1918 in Udell, Iowa the son of Edward L. and Belle A. Taylor Whisler. Ed lived most of his life in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Franklin High School. He married
Ruth Philipp in 1940. They divorced. Enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1943, he served his country in WW II until 1945 in the European Theatre. He married
Grace Curran in 1949. He was employed by Barnard and Leas Manufacturing Co, retiring as Vice President of Sales in 1985. Ed was actively involved in the American Legion 60 Years, the Elks Lodge 61 years and the V.F.W. 60 Years. He was a member of Crescent Masonic Lodge #25, the Cedar Rapids Consistory, the El Kahir Shrine, and the Quiet Birdmen. He was a former Wing Commander for the Iowa Civil Air Patrol. He was also a colonel in the Auxiliary of the United States Air Force. He was a sustaining member of the Elk's National Foundation.
Ed enjoyed flying, fishing, cards, football, and gardening. Grace and Ed owned a cabin in the Ivanhoe area for many years where they enjoyed entertaining friends and family. He gave freely of his time and energy to many worthy causes, volunteering for the Special Olympics, several Veteran's organizations, and serving on numerous boards and commissions.
He will be greatly missed by his many friends and family including devoted friends Harold Hall and Jim Lorimer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Ed's name to the Elk's National Foundation, the Shriners' Hospital for Children, or a memorial of donor's choice.

Daniel J. Shaffer, 63, of 2285 Catherine Dr., Marion, formerly of Keota, died Monday, September 20, 2004, in Mercy Medical Center following a short illness. Memorial services at 10:30 AM Friday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Christine Wagner-Hecht of Mercy Hospice will officiate. Inurnment in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. His family will receive friends at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Thursday and at the chapel after 10 AM on Friday.
Survivors include three brothers Patrick and wife Esther of Prospect Heights, Illinois, Richard of Keota, and Tom and wife Sue of Springville, Iowa.
Also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister Laura Shaffer.
Daniel was born December 18, 1940 in Garrison, Iowa, to Dale and Mary Brown Shaffer. He was a Teacher at Keota High School for 30 years retiring in 1995.

Bonnie R. Strong

Bonnie R. Curry Strong, 86, of Mercy Hallmar, formerly of Marion and Cedar Rapids, died there Saturday, September 18, 2004, after a short illness. Memorial services at 3 PM on Tuesday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Pastor Bob Kunz of Marion Christian Church, and longtime friend, Sister May Lou Podzimek will officiate. Survivors include three children, Debbie Randle and husband Kevin, and Ken Strong and wife Debbie, all of Cedar Rapids, and Susan Strong-Novak and husband Marty of San Jose, California; three grandchildren, Carly and Kyle Strong-Novak and Brianna Strong; a step-granddaughter, Shawna Mahoney and husband Matt; a step-great-granddaughter, Amaya Mahoney; and a sister, Jeanne Reid, of Richland, Washington.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Howard, on May 14, 1974, and her parents.
Bonnie was born January 20, 1918, in Cedar Rapids, to Elmer and Ruth Beall Curry. She married
Howard Strong on August 2, 1942 in Cedar Rapids. She graduated from McKinley High School in 1936 and earned a BA degree from Coe College in 1940. She was a longtime teacher, beginning her career in Elgin, Iowa, where she met Howard. After their marriage and Howard's service in the Navy during World War II, she taught high school Home Economics in Springville, Iowa. In 1956, they moved to Cedar Rapids where she taught Language Arts at Wilson Junior High, retiring in 1978. She touched the lives of many students who remember her fondly.
Bonnie loved the game of bridge and played regularly in numerous groups. Known as 'The Fudge Lady' because of her popular chocolate confection, she always had a good supply on hand to share with her many friends. She enjoyed attending services at Marion Christian Church.
Bonnie will be remembered for her heart of gold, compassion, loyalty to friends, and devotion to family. She was truly a blessing to all who knew and loved her.
