Mildred L. Stepanek, 88, 1422 30th Street NE died Thursday, March 11, 2004 at her home following a long illness. Services: 1:00 P.M. Monday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Entombment: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 6 PM Sunday at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
Surviving are two daughters, Joyce Hollingsworth and husband Harold of Toddville and Shirley Bradwell and husband Richard of Cedar Rapids; a sister-in-law, Myrtle Peckosh of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great great nieces and great great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John in 1991; a brother, M.R. Peckosh; a foster daughter, Barbara Doyle; and two nephews, Jim Peckosh and Tom Peckosh.
Mildred was born April 12, 1915 in Oxford Junction the daughter of James and Leana Metler Peckosh. She married
John Stepanek on August 3, 1933 in Tipton. She worked at Collins Radio and at Peck's Nursery for over 20 years. Special Olympics were one of Mildred's favorite charities. She attended all of the events and donated her funds to help them. John and Mildred took in childhood friends, and would keep them as long as was needed. Mildred had longtime friends, and everyone who came in contact with her loved her.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Special Olympics.
Lester Schuldt

Lester J. Schuldt, 88, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, October 18, 2006, at the Iowa Veteran's Home, Marshalltown, after a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Concordia Lutheran Church, where friends may call after 9:30 a.m. The Rev. Jerry Doellinger will officiate. Turner West Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife Pearl; a daughter, Cindy Garlock Elwood of Cedar Rapids; two sons, Ron Nancy Schuldt of Olive Branch, Mississippi and Gary Stella Schuldt of Tucson, Arizona; and 4 grandchildren, Shawn Renee Schuldt, Tiffany Andy Elwood, Rebecca Calvin Arellano and Elyse Garlock, and two great grandchildren, Gabrielle Schuldt and Carson Schuldt.
Lester was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers.
Lester was born September 2, 1918 in Keystone and married
Pearl Alpers on December 15, 1945 in Vinton. He served 4 years during WWII with the 128th Infranty in the South Pacific. Returning from the South Pacific, Lester farmed in the Garrison area. He left farming in 1962 and moved to Van Horne and was employed at FMC until retiring in 1982. Lester was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, the VFW, and the Van Horne American Legion.
Donovan Edward Yanda

Donovan E. Yanda, 85, 3701 16th Ave SW died Sunday, March 13, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center following a long illness. Memorial Service: 11:00 A.M. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Inurnment: Oak Hill cemetery. The Rev. Mike Gray of Valley View Baptist Church will officiate.
Surviving are three daughters, Donna Yanda and significant other Dale White of Springville, Dana Robinson and husband Paul of Mt. Vernon, and Julie Yanda of Cedar Rapids; three sons, Joseph Yanda of Sacramento, CA, Stephen Yanda and wife Dianne of Cedar Rapids, and Kenneth Yanda and wife Cindee of Ely; 17 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and several great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Anne in 2002 and a sister, Beatrice Holub.
Donovan was born February 4, 1920 in Iowa City the son of Edward Joseph and Carrie Vredenverg Yanda. He married
Anne L. Long on May 10, 1942 in Kahoka, MO. Donovan was a truck driver all of his life, working for Wendling Quarries until his retirement in 1981. Donovan loved music, playing the clarinet, saxophone and the button accordion in swing bands.
A memorial fund has been established.

Mary Ellen Singer, 87, of the West Ridge Care Center, where she had been a resident the past seven weeks, died there on Sat. Oct. 14, 2006 after a short illness. Memorial services at 11 AM on Wed. at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home where friends may call after 10 AM on Wed. Rev. Herb Isenberg will officiate. Inurnment at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Schwendenmann Steve of Lafayette, Indiana and a son Thomas of Cedar Rapids. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Jason Schwendenmann of Frederick, MD., Stephanie Tom Reed and a great grandchild, Rylyn all of Lafayette, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother, Dr. George E. Oldag.
Mary Ellen was born May 27, 1919 in Cherokee, the daughter of Dr. George and Ida Oldag of Paullina. She Married Joseph G. Singer in 1942 in Long Beach, CA. She worked for many years as a payroll clerk at Iowa National Mutual Insurance Company until her retirement in 1981. Mary Ellen graduated from Coe College. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Church Circle, P.E.O., and St. Lukes Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing bridge in various clubs and was an avid Hawkeye and Cub fan. Mary Ellen's family would like to thank the staff of West Ridge Care Center and Mercy Hospice for being so caring in the past weeks.

Larry R. Siemer, 69, of 762 Gateway St. NE died Friday, Oct. 13, 2006 at Allen Hospital in Waterloo after an extended illness. Services at 1:00 PM on Tuesday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Deacon Gerald Pettit will officiate. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Monday.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy, a son, Larry of Clarinda, a daughter, Sue Brummer Michael of Alburnett and a brother, Leland of Iowa City. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Jamie, Josh and Jake. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Eileen and his beloved dog, Katy.
Larry was born on Dec. 8, 1936 in Iowa City, the son of Herman and Lena Miller Siemer. He married
Peggy J. Kirby on Jan. 6, 1955 in Kansas City, MO. Larry worked at Penick & Ford for over 33 years, retiring in 1998. He was an avid bridge player, enjoyed all card games, the Hawkeyes, the Cubs and was a friend of Bill W. for 28 years. Larry was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed. A memorial fund has been established in Larry's name.
Hal Everett Van Nest

Hal "Van" E. Van Nest, Sr., 94, of Cedar Rapids, died July 13, 2007 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, following a short illness. Funeral Mass 10:00 AM, Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. Rev. Steven Rosonke will officiate. Inurnment: 3:00 PM, Tuesday, at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery, Chapel of Memories Mausoleum. Arrangements entrusted to Cedar Memorial Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 71 years Alberta; son Hal E. Van Nest, Jr. and wife Jule of Moline, IL; daughter Patricia A. Griffin of Charles City, IA; daughter Sandra K. Giegerich and husband Roger of Sebring, FL; 8 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Wayne, and two sisters Velma and Marjorie.
Hal "Van" Everett Van Nest, Sr. was born May 22, 1913 in Brownville, Nebraska the beloved son of Harry C. and Lauretta Kortright Van Nest. He was united in marriage to Alberta Mary McAllister on August 17, 1935 at Nativity Catholic Church, Dubuque, IA. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy during World War II as a Radar Technician. He was a graduate of Business College and had a successful and long career as a Sales Representative for various companies, and retired with People's Furniture. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, and a former member of the American Legion, Elks Club, Eagles Club, and the Traveling Salesmen Organization. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend of many and will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations in Hal's honor may be made to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, IA, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Horeb, WI; three sons, Mark Sickles of Lawrenceville, GA, Kimett Sickles of Cedar Rapids and Raymond Sickles II of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren; a brother, Eugene Boss of Muscatine; four sisters, Donna Powell of Cedar Rapids, Phyllis Walz of Bethlehem, PA, MaryAnn Fye of Marion and Susan Vaughn of Arlington, TX.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a granddaughter Amber Willis and a sister Margaret Mefford.
Beverly was born July 22, 1928 in Iowa City the daughter of Arthur and Alice Christensen Boss. She worked in the food industry for over 40 years, and was a secretary for 10 years. She was a member of New Beginnings Church, the P.W.N., and the National Secretaries Association. She traveled 55, 000 miles across the country journaling as Grandma Butterfly from 1977 to 1980. She was also a member for seven years of the TLC Ministries with New Beginnings Church.
In lieu of flowers friends may make a memorial donation to the American Diabetes Association or to St. Luke's Hospice.
