Leona Alice Smothers, 101, a resident of Heritage Nursing & Rehab, went to meet her Lord and Savior on Saturday January 5, 2008. Services: 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel by the Rev. William B. Harnish and the Rev. Linda Bibb. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Visitation will be today at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel 1221 First Ave S.W. from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
Survivors include her two daughters, Alice Barta and husband Robert L. of Cedar Rapids, and Laura Ruble of Cedar Rapids. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren, Steve, Karen, Sue, Kathy, Scott, Loretta, Edward and Cynthia, 21 great grandchildren and 15 great great grandchildren.
Her husband Joseph Smothers, two sons, Joe Smothers Jr. and Edward Smothers, a son in law, Charles Ruble, a great granddaughter, Kaitlin and two grandsons, Joe and Richard preceded her in death.
Leona was born July 29, 1906 in Galveston, Texas. She married
Joseph Smothers on May 19, 1924 in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. Leona was a waitress for the Killian’s Tea Room for 25 years before retiring. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church and the Jolly 60’s Senior Citizen’s Club, Caleb Friendship Club at Good News Baptist Church, Friendship Fellowship Senior Citizens Club at Trinity United Methodist Church and Witwer Senior Citizen’s Club. She volunteered at Mercy Medical Center, St. Luke’s Hospital and Council of Aging.
Gregory John Soper

Gregory John Soper, 47, of 1533 Ellis Blvd. NW, died Thursday, December 27, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center, after a brief illness. Services: 3 p.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by the Rev. Bill Harnish. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Survivors include his mother, Donna Soper of Cedar Rapids; his father, Charles Soper of Ocala, Florida; a sister, Cindy McKenzie of Marion; a brother, Jeff Sharlene Soper; a special friend, Lynn; many nieces and nephews; and his six cats, Homeless, Shirley, Big Red, Little Red, Samantha, and Snickers. He was preceded in death by three grandparents; and two nephews.
Greg was born on November 23, 1960 in Monticello but a lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids. He was employed by Cooper Tires. Greg was a loyal friend. He loved his cats and working with the cars he collected. He will be missed and remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Carl David Stallman, 87, of Walford, died Wednesday, December 19, 2007, after a brief illness. Funeral Mass: Saturday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Fairfax, by the Rev. Phil Thompson. Burial: St. Patrick cemetery, Fairfax. A vigil service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel where friends may call from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Friday and after Saturday at the church. Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include four sons, Michael Dorothy Stallman and Jeffery Stallman, both of Walford, Patrick Linda Stallman of Norway, and James Sheryl Stallman of Fairfax; three daughters, Mary Rita Andy Meyers of Fairfax, Sandy Gary Cain of Walford, and Peggy Nicholas Sleichter of Fairfax Station, VA; four brothers, Dave Stallman of Cedar Rapids, Firman Barbara Stallman of Center Point, Gerald Stallman of Shellsburg, and William Charlene Stallman of Fairfax; three sisters, Germaine Louis Keiper of Palo, Marge Francis Cejka of Fairfax, and Ida Leonard Shonka of Cedar Rapids; 18 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren.
Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine in 2006; two brothers, James and Robert Stallman; and two sisters, Marie Metzger and Eleanor Beach.
Carl was born on September 3, 1920 in Linn County to Charles and Margaret Schulte Stallman. He married
Mary Elaine Weland in Walford on June 27, 1944. Carl was an Army veteran of WWII. He lived and farmed south of Walford since 1946. Carl was a faithful, longtime member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fairfax and the American Legion Pekomy Post #572. He loved baseball and gardening.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Fairfax Fire Department or a charity of the donor's choice.
Ralph D. Smith

Ralph D. Smith, 74, of Cedar Rapids, IA formally of North English, IA passed away Thursday, December 13, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center. Per his wishes, Ralph was cremated. A visitation will be held Monday, December 17, 2007 from 2 to 4 pm at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home with a Celebration of Life Service beginning at 4 pm. Officiating will be Reverend William Harnish.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Bonnie, a son Scott Kim Smith of Solon, IA; a daughter Debbie Scott Rathjens of Springville, IA; three sisters, Diane Smith, Kaye Meyn, and Kathy Anthony; three brothers, Jim Smith, Jack Smith, and Brad Smith; four grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a baby sister, Connie Sue Smith.
Ralph was born July 27, 1933 in North English, IA to Albert and Mildred Banes Smith. He married
his high school sweetheart, Bonnie Voss, on May 16, 1953 in North English, IA. Ralph retired from Cedar Rapids Incorporated after working for them for 28 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and a glass of good scotch. Ralph was an avid Hawkeye fan and would go to all of the bowl games. Ralph loved traveling to Oregon to visit his sister and aunt. He will be greatly missed.

Eldred D. 'Spike' Wymore, 74, of 1310 I Ave NE, died suddenly, Sunday, February 9, 2003, in his home. Services with military honors at 3 PM Thursday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Alexander George will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Wednesday and at the chapel after 2:30 PM on Thursday.
Survivors include his children, Catherine Soukup and husband Jim of Cedar Rapids, Major Justin Wymore and wife Debra with the US Air Force in Florida, Tamara Cronin and husband Phil of Cedar Rapids, and Teresa Heitman and husband Robert of Coralville, a sister Iris Merical of Des Moines, a brother Dale Wymore and wife Helen of Florida, 11 grandchildren, a sister-in-law Fran Cerny of Cedar Rapids, and his former wife Amanda Adams of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.
Eldred was born February 15, 1928 in Barnes City, Iowa to Gerald and Mary Pearl Walsh Wymore. He was a draftsman for Shive-Hattery Inc for several years retiring in 1993. He had also worked at Wilsons and Cherry-Burrell.
Spike enjoyed riding his bikes and was an avid reader and history buff. He served in the US Army during WW II.

Larry A. Steffen, 65, of 5745 22nd Ave Dr., Vinton, Iowa, died Thursday, December 13, 2007, in University Hospital in Iowa City, following a strong battle with Leukemia. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 AM Monday in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vinton with Rev. David Ambrosy officiating. Graveside services and interment at 2 PM Monday in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids from 1 to 5 PM on Sunday with a wake service beginning at 2 PM.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years Angie, daughter, Lisa and friend Terry of Fort Dodge, Iowa, two sons Eric and wife Sherry of Cedar Rapids, and Kirk and wife Kelly of Shellsburg, grandchildren Nicholas Skrdla and wife Nilda of Phoenix, Maria, Sean, and Michael Steffen of Cedar Rapids, Kathleen and Becca Steffen of Shellsburg, a great granddaughter Nina Skrdla of Phoenix, four brothers and sisters in law, Loras and Dorothy Steffen of Drakesville, Iowa, Dale and Mary Steffen of North Liberty, John and Priscilla Steffen of Anamosa, and Phil and Deb Steffen of Winthrop, three sisters and brothers in law, Linda and Denny Stucki of Forest City, Nancy and Dan Keppler of Strawberry Point, Betty and Mark Keppler of Elkader, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Larry was born June 2, 1942 in Dubuque to Leonard and Marie LeGrand Steffen. He graduated from Lamont High School in 1960. He married
Angie Fisk on October 17, 1964 at St. Mary's Church in Lamont.
Larry served in the US Army for 3 years. Upon discharge he first worked for Firestone, then for UPS for 30 years, retiring in 2000. He was currently employed by the Benton County DNR, working at Rogers Park in Vinton.
Larry was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vinton, and a member of Ducks Unlimited.
Larry enjoyed sports of all kinds. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved the outdoors. He was a Hunter's Education Instructor, and participated in multiple community volunteer activities. He was a woodcrafter and created many toys and games for his grandchildren.
He greatly loved all of his grand kids and relished in sharing with them all he knew of the outdoors. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
