Carol H. “Putts” Thenhaus, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by the Rev. William Harnish. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. A visitation will be held on Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 6 p.m.
Carol is survived by daughters, Karen (John) Lund of Mt. Auburn and Amy (Pete) Kohl of Monmouth; grandchildren, Ryan, Brieanna, Jasmine, and Keegan; great grandson, Brayden; nephews, Ronnie (Judy) Thenhaus and Duane (Therese) Thenhaus; and special friends, Ray and Jean Pata. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
Carol was born December 5, 1922 in Cedar Rapids to Albert and Louise Thenhaus. He was a Navy veteran of WWII. Carol retired in 1984 from Kwik-Way after over 40 years. He was active in the M & J Baseball league, softball and slow pitch. Putts was an avid Cub and Hawkeye fan but his greatest joy was spending time with his family.

Enid Lillian Scheer, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died October 17, 2007 in her home following complications of heart disease. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, October 22, 2007 at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Friends may call Sunday, October 21, 2007 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, and after 10:30 Monday at the Chapel of Memories. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery.
Survivors include a son Chris Scheer and wife Karen of Arlington, VA; daughters Linda Levy and husband Bobby of Cedar Rapids, and Carol Nickerson and husband Bob of Spencer, NY; grandchildren Trina, Robby, Dan, Sarah, Rachel, and Jonathan; great grand daughter Sophia; nieces Elaine and Susan; nephew Eugene; and sister in law Engel Farrington.
She was preceded in death by her husband Chris in 1994, her parents, and two sisters Loris and Jean.
Enid Lillian Scheer was born August 8, 1920 in Rock Hampton, Queensland, Australia the beloved daughter of Wilson and Gertrude Wilson Irving. During WWII she met Chris G. Scheer while he was stationed in her homeland. They were united in marriage on March 17, 1944 in Rock Hampton, Queensland, Australia. She later moved with Chris and they made their home in Cedar Rapids. She was employed from 1955 to 1980 in Offset Printing at LeFebure Corporation. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, bus trips with her friends, and her Friday nights she was able to spend with her friends at the Marion American Legion Post # 298. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend of many and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.
In lieu of flowers, Enid's family requests donations are made to the memorial fund established in her honor.

John L. VanAlst, 87, of Robins, died Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital following a brief illness. Visitation: 4 to 7 pm Friday at Cedar Memorial Grant Wood Chapel. Services: 11 A.M. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Grant Wood Chapel by the Rev. Mark Lofquist of Toddville Methodist Church. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery.
Survivors include one sister, Maxine Thenhaus of Anderson, TX; a special friend, Anna Ealy; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Fay; parents; sister, Helen; brothers, Leslie, Earl, Howard, and Alva.
John Lee VanAlst was born on May 12, 1920 in Toddville, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Lorena Haynes VanAlst. He married
Pearl Fay Brown on June 10, 1941 in Iowa City. She passed away in 1973. John worked as a mechanic for many years at the Allen Motor Company and the City of Cedar Rapids. He proudly served his country in WWII with the Army and received numerous ribbons. He will always be remembered for his generosity, helpfulness, and his caring attitude towards everyone.
In lieu, a memorial fund ahs been established for St. Luke's Hospice.

Surviving in addition to her husband Robert are a daughter, Jan Borst Tom of Springville; two sons, Jeff Shimek Judy of Walker and Jim Shimek Julie of Fairfax; four grandchildren, Mike, Shelly, Jennifer and Jill; five great grandchildren; and a sister, Vera Stepp Splinter of Fayette.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Wayne Stepp.
Shirley was born May 23, 1928 in Fayette the daughter of Atrus and Lottie Moore Stepp. She married
Robert Shimek on April 2, 1950 in Nashua. Shirley was a legal secretary for many years. She was a member of the National Association of Legal Secretaries and was once chosen Legal Secretary of the Year. Shirley enjoyed sewing and her flowers. She enjoyed animals of all kinds. Shirley loved to spend time with her family and her friends.

Roger D. Zemanek, 76, of 1724 Hamilton St. SW died Wed. Dec. 11, 2002 at St. Lukes Hospital after a short illness. Services at 10 AM on Monday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Burial at 2 PM on Monday at the Dubuque Linwood cemetery in Dubuque. Friends may call at the Linwood Chapel after 1:30 PM on Monday. Friends may also call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 3 to 7 PM on Sunday and at the Chapel of Memories after 9 AM on Monday.
Survivors include his brother, Howard and his wife, Jo Anne of Marion. A niece, Marlys Wessels and her husband, David of Decatur, ILL., a nephew, Ray Zemanek and his wife, Martha of Atlanta, GA. and a great niece, Katrina Jo Wessels of Decatur, ILL. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Roger was born on Sept. 15, 1926 in Dubuque, the son of Robert and Grace Andresen Zemanek. Roger was an Eagle Scout and served in the Pacific as a Navy Medical Corpsman during WWII. He was a graduate of the University of Dubuque. During his sophomore year at the University of Iowa Dental College, he was severely paralyzed during the polio epidemic of 1949. He was a member of American Legion Hanford Post No. 5, the PVA and the First Lutheran Church all in Cedar Rapids.
Roger's boundless energy and optimistic outlook on life proved to be a living inspiration to those who knew and loved him. His love of people was matched only by his passion for life. He considered his confinement to a wheel chair as a means to an end, not as an end.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Richard in February; her son-in-law Jeff Smith; a sister, Sue; and a brother-in-law, Tom Parker.
Donna was born May 16, 1933 in Spirit Lake the daughter of Hubert and Lois Hafer Nelson. She married
Richard A. Senninger on December 6, 1953 in Cedar Rapids. She was a member of Kenwood Park Presbyterian Church.
Memorials may be made to the Fellowship Club, the Cedar Rapids Humane Society or to a charity of donor's choice.

Ruby Mae Starks, 95, a resident of Marion and formerly Bickford Cottage, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 3, 2007, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. A memorial service to celebrate Ruby's life will be officiated by Rev. Nick Longworth at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories in Cedar Rapids at 3:00 PM, on Saturday, October 6, 2007. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and at the chapel on Saturday after 2:30 PM.
Survivors include one son, James Starks and wife Patricia of Dayton, OH; three grandchildren, Michelle Bergeson and husband Brad, Angela Munier and husband Adam, and Michael Starks all of Marion; three step-grandchildren, Mark Fisher of Myrtle Beach, SC; Stacey Stierman and husband Aaron of Milwaukee, WI and Mindy Jacobs and husband Jeff of Concord, GA; two great-grandchildren, Scott and Brenda Munier of Marion; four step-great-grandchildren, Daylan, Cannon, Austen and Dallis Jacobs of Concord, GA; one brother, Don Willmott of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Jean Taylor and husband Barton of Alburnett, IA; one brother-in-law Earl Knapp of Walker, IA and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother Leo Willmott and wife Esther; two sisters Ruth Knapp, and Kathryn DeSotel and husband Art; one sister-in-law Loretta Willmott, and an infant granddaughter, Kimberly Anne Starks.
Ruby was born July 1, 1912, in Waubeek, IA to Charles and Lela Willmott, the oldest of six children. She graduated from Central City in 1930, received her teaching certificate and became a one-room country schoolteacher. On May 16, 1932, she married
Freeman T. Starks in Freeport, IL and resided in Williamsburg and Waubeek, IA. They celebrated over 63 years of marriage before his death in 1995.
In 1952, Ruby, Freeman and James moved to Marion, IA where they built a home. Ruby was a preschool teacher at Jack & Jill for many years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marion, FUMC Marion Quilters, Amiego Club and the Marion Garden Club. She enjoyed making many quilts, growing flowers, knitting, crocheting, reading, walking and spending time nurturing the garden with Freeman.
Ruby devoted her life to God, was kind to everyone and had a loving smile. Ruby lived her life one day at a time filling it with wonderful memories. She will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to many, and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her dearly.
Ruby's son and grandchildren feel blessed that she was part of their lives, and would like to thank her relatives, friends, the staff and friends of Bickford Cottage of Marion, and Hospice of Mercy for all of their loving support and care.
Memorials may be given to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha or to Bickford Cottage of Marion in Ruby's memory.
