William "Bill" Ernst Brace (1938-2006)
HAMPTON --- William "Bill" Ernst Brace, 67, of Hampton, died Monday, April 17, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of natural causes.
He was born July 14, 1938, in Bluffton, son of Teaman C. and Marie Bergman Brace. He married Magdalene Lewis on Oct. 1, 1955, in Cedar Falls, and they later divorced. He married Teresa Daughtry and they divorced.
Mr. Brace attended New Hartford School in New Hartford. He was employed as the cemetery manager and salesman for several Memorial Parks and cemeteries and was an insurance salesman.
Survivors include: six daughters, Lori (Wayne) Riggins of Hampton, Mary Barker of Beckley, W. Va., Sheryl (Jim Bass) Jervis of Bradford, Catherine Hall of Hampton, Rose Brace of Indian Harbor Beach, Fla., and Melissa (Jeff) Gipple of Columbus Junction; two sons, William J. (Jinky) Brace of Spanaway, Wash., and Tony (Michelle) Brace of Allison; 26 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Vernon Towsley of Terrill, Texas; a sister-in-law, Betty "Cookie" Brace of Cedar Falls; and his former wives, Maggie Brace of Hampton and Teresa Daughtry of Des Moines.
Preceded in death by: a sister, Delores; and a brother, Ronald.

Leo "Pete" J. Winter (1910-2006)
HAMPTON -- Leo "Pete" John Winter, 96, of New Hampton, died Sunday, April 16, at Mercy Medical Center, New Hampton.
He was born April 11, 1910, in Lawler, son of George and Mary Schwendinger Winter. He married Lucy Laures on Sept. 24, 1934. She died in 1994.
Mr. Winter graduated from New Hampton High School in 1928. He had farmed for many years and was a cattle buyer.
Survivors include: six sons, Dr. Richard (Ellen) Winter of Omaha, Robert (Carolyn) of Roseville, Calif., David (Brenda) of Encino, Calif., Michael (Suzanne) of Council Bluffs, Thomas (Danita) of St. Charles, Ill., and John (Mary) of New Hampton; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren: and a sister, Margaret Blazek of New Hampton.
Preceded in death: three sisters, Mamie McGowan, Rocille Winter and Lucille Forkenbrock; two brothers, George "Pat" and Andrew; and an infant grandson.
Services: 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church-St. Joseph Center, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both in New Hampton. Public visitation 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home, New Hampton, with a 4 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7 p.m. Scripture service. Visitation also for an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Wayne E. Shaffer (1919-2006)
REINBECK -- Wayne E. Shaffer, 87, of Reinbeck, formerly of Hudson, died Monday, April 17, at Parkview Manor, Reinbeck.
He was born Feb. 18, 1919, in Oxford, son of Walter and Edith Roberts Shaffer. On Oct. 8, 1950, he married Doris Klein at the Methodist Church in Brooklyn,
Mr. Shaffer was educated in Sharon Center and had served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He farmed and then worked for Eldon Miller in Iowa City as a semi driver, and later at Farm Services in Hudson.
Survivors include: his wife; two daughters, Deborah (Jerry) McIntyre of Reinbeck and Deanne (Randall) Lindaman of Evansdale; two sons, Dwayne (Debra) of Fountain Inn, S.C., and Dennis (Nyola) of Reinbeck; 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a sister, Alverta Williams of Tiffin; three brothers, Walter (Betty) of Iowa City, Robert (Ruth) of Cedar Rapids and Delmar (Sally) of Kalona; a brother-in-law, Russell Colony of Oxford; and two sisters-in-law, Donna McConaughy of Lisbon and Grace Shaffer of Grand Island, Neb.
Preceded in death by: a sister, Veva Colony; two brothers, Paul and Mervin; and a sister-in-law, Doris Shaffer.
Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at French Hand Funeral Home, Reinbeck, with burial in Reinbeck Cemetery. Full military rites will be provided by Reinbeck American Legion Post 242.

Esther P. Reed (1916-2006)
FREDERIKA -- Esther Pherne Reed, 90, of Frederika, died Sunday, April 16, at Mercy Medical Center, New Hampton, of natural causes.
She was born Feb. 26, 1916, in Strawberry Point, daughter of Sigmund and Caroline Staple Schoentag. She married Loren G. "Jack" Reed on Aug. 1, 1935, at Lutheran Church in Strawberry Point. He died Oct. 31, 1991.
Mrs. Reed graduated from Strawberry Point High School in 1932. She was a homemaker and had worked as a nurses, aide at the Hillcrest Home, Sumner, for 15 years.
Survivors include: two sons, Loren (Juanita) of Memphis, Tenn., and Roger of Frederika; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: two brothers, Harold and Julius Schoenberg; and four sisters, Alma Bloomer, Anna Davis, Alice Gehring and Gertrude Parmely.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Rettig Funeral Chapel, Tripoli, with committal services at 2 p.m. in Madison Cemetery, rural Aurora. Public visitation 9 a.m. until services Thursday at the funeral home.

Marcia Jean Nelson was born January 26, 1935, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Earl and Leona (Watson) Owen. She attended Immanuel Lutheran School and East High School in Waterloo. Marcia married Theodore C. Nelson on October 20, 1973 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo. She was a waitress and later the manager of the Sky Room at Black’s Department Store for 15 years, and was a waitress at Happy Chef for 4 years, retiring in 1983. Marcia was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls and the Eagles Auxillary in Waterloo. She enjoyed being outdoors, especially in her garden, and helped her husband Theodore with the farming and their livestock. Marcia died Sunday, January 14, 2001, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, at 65 years of age.
She is survived by her husband Theodore, of Cedar Falls; her son, James Compton of Gower, Missouri; a step-daughter, Kimberly Bergman and a step-son, Steven Nelson, both of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren; three brothers, Arthur Owen of Jesup, Iowa, Michael Owen of St. Croix, Wisconsin and David Owen of Evansdale, Iowa and two sisters, Patricia Lillard of Waco, Texas and Colleen Rice of Waterloo.
Marcia was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, James and Robert Owen and two sisters, Mary Spore and Donna Dietz.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 17, 2001, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, with burial at Garden of Memories in Waterloo. Visitation will be 3 - 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 3 - 5:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Sartori Skilled Nursing and Cedar Valley Hospice.
CHARLES D. TRUMAN was born August 3, 1928 in Tipton, Iowa, the son of George Truman, Sr. and Golda Bernet. He married Helen Vaughn and they later divorced. Charles married Frances Crosby Lund and they later divorced. He was an equipment dealer for Clay Equipment Company in both Cedar Falls and Wisconsin for many years. Charles also farmed near Shell Rock, Iowa until his retirement. He died Friday, April 6, 2001 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, at 72 years of age.
Charles is survived by his daughter, Nancy Wedemeier and her husband Duane, of Waterloo; two grandchildren, Annette Hyde, and her husband Tom, of Fairbank, Iowa, and Marshall Wedemeier of Waterloo; his brother, Virgil Truman, and his wife Sandra, of Lawler, Iowa, and two sisters, Lucille Carrier and Lois Leffler.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George Truman, Jr. and Robert Truman, and a sister, Marie.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Grace Lutheran Church in Waterloo. Interment will be at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens in Cedar Falls. Visitation will be 5 - 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, and one hour prior to service at the church. Memorials may be directed to Allen Memorial Hospital.
ASTA H. MIKKELSEN was born January 2, 1926 in Grundy County, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Thora (Peterson) Jacobsen. She married Vernon Mikkelsen on June 27, 1948 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Asta worked in the office, at Viking Pump Company in Cedar Falls, for 48 years. She died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Windsor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Cedar Falls, at 75 years of age.
Asta is survived by her husband, Vernon Mikkelsen of Cedar Falls.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Harry H. Jacobsen.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. Interment will be at Fredsville Lutheran Cemetery in rural Cedar Falls.
DOROTHY A. DUNDIS was born December 23, 1914 at Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, the daughter of Lewis and Bessie (Mitchell) Beaton. She married Alphonse B. Dundis on February 8, 1941 in Waterloo, Iowa. He preceded her in death on February 17, 1973. Dorothy was a 1933 graduate of West High School in Waterloo and was a buyer for the Younkers Department Store, for 27 years, retiring in 1980. She and her husband lived in Des Moines, Iowa for many years, where Dorothy was a volunteer at Mercy Hospital and was a member of Highland Park Christian Church. Dorothy died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, at 86 years of age.
She is survived by her son, Stephen Dundis, and his wife Jo, of Glenview, Illinois; a brother, Jack Beaton of Waterloo; two sisters-in-law, Marjorie and Evelyn Beaton; four nephews, Michael, Charles, Larry and Rex Beaton; two nieces, Linda Horra and Kathy Hamer, and many cousins.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband and parents, and a brother, Hilliard Beaton.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the Lutheran Home Chapel. Interment will be at 3:30 p.m. in Highland Memory Gardens in Des Moines. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association and Highland Park Christian Church in Des Moines.
Gerald E. Getty was born October 24, 1939 in Freeport, Illinois, the son of Fred and Florence (Folgate) Getty. He married Betty June Roberts in December of 1958. They were later divorced. Gerald married Betty Louise Graf on August 28, 1982 in Waterloo, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army from 1958-1962. Gerald was employed at Control-O-Fax for 35 years, serving as Plant Manager in California from 1968-1976 and in Georgia from 1976-1981. He was employed at Congdon Printing Company in Cedar Falls for the past 10 years. Gerald served on the Board of Directors for the Sturgis Falls Celebration, the Cedar Falls Community Credit Union and Junior Achievement of Black Hawk Land. He was also involved with the United Way, Boy Scouts of America and the Red Cross. Gerald died Monday, June 11, 2001, at Sartori Memorial Hospital, at 61 years of age.
Survivors include his wife, Betty L. Getty, Cedar Falls; one son, John Paul Getty, Bakersfield, CA; two daughters, Julie Crider, Kerrville, TX and Tamela Elliott, Atlanta, GA; two stepdaughters, Tamre Gordon, Janesville, IA and Angela Keith of California; three grandsons, Cody, Christopher, and Casey Crider; four step grandchildren, Ryan and Amber Gordon, Alisha Keith and Tanner Wood; two brothers, Duane Getty, Dallas, TX and his twin, Harold Getty, Waterloo; and one sister, Mary Ellen Werkmeister, Waterloo.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2001, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 207 W. Louise St., Waterloo. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Cedar Falls, where military committal rites will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Visitation will be 3 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, where a Masonic service will be conducted by Black Hawk Masonic Lodge #65 A.F. & A. M. at 5:00 p.m. A memorial fund will be established.
SIGNE L. JENNINGS, 91, of Cedar Falls, Iowa died Tuesday, September 18, 2001, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls. She was born July 1, 1910 in Sherwood, North Dakota, the daughter of Gudbrand and Bertha (Eittreim) Esval. Signe married Philip C. Jennings on March 18, 1933 in Ames, Iowa. He preceded her in death on April 30, 1992. She was a member of Chapter FV-PEO, the 19th Century Club, Sartori Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was a board member at Goodwill Industries.
Signe is survived by her daughter, Natalie J. Thatcher of Boise, Idaho; five grandchildren, Clint Brammer, Ginger Watkins, Michael Thatcher, Bradley Thatcher and Anne MacConnell; four great-grandchildren and a sister, Gladys Miller.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents; a son, Philip C. Jennings, Jr. and a brother, Orland Esval.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 20, 2001, at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home and Cremation Service. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to the University of Northern Iowa or Iowa State University Foundation for the Jennings Memorial Scholarship Funds.
Gertrude Folkers Van Lengen
Gert was born October 31, 1920, in Allison, Iowa, the daughter of Jacob F. and Lizzie (Siems) Folkers. She married John Van Lengen August 31, 1938 in Waverly, Iowa. Gert retired from Hawkeye Corrugated Box Co. in 1985. She died Sunday, December 30, 2001, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, at the age of 81 years.
Gert is survived by her husband, John Van Lengen of Janesville, Iowa; one son, John J. Van Lengen of Janesville, Iowa; two daughters, Dorothy Wilmot and Jo Ann Gronowski, both of Cedar Falls, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Folkers and Jake Folkers, Jr., both of Cedar Falls, Iowa and one sister, Ruth Smith of Evansdale, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Fred, Ben and Ray Folkers; one sister, Sena Adelmund and one son-in-law, Chuck Wilmot.
Funeral services will be 1:30 Thursday, January 3, 2002 at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home & Cremation Service with burial in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home. A memorial fund will be established.
STRATTON JAMES SHANNON was born June 18, 1916 in Wautoma, Wisconsin, the son of James and Lucille (Stratton) Shannon. He married Harriett Jane Gearhart on September 20, 1941 in Mason City, Iowa. Harriett preceded him in death on February 12, 1998. Stratton operated his own independent insurance agency, Shannon Insurance Agency, in Cedar Falls, Iowa for many years, retiring in December of 1981. He was past president of the Cedar Falls Lions Club and was the Melvin Jones Award Winner and past commodore of the Black Hawk County U.S. Power Squadron. Stratton died Saturday, February 2, 2002 at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, at 85 years of age.
He is survived by his children, Mary Patricia Van Oort and her husband Larry of Cedar Falls, JoAnn Laing and her husband James of La Jolla, California, Lynn Kimble and her husband Ty of Cedar Falls and Dr. Stratton John Shannon and his wife Amy of Lee, Maine; twelve grandchildren and two great-granddaughters; his sister, Juanita Jones of Mason City, Iowa and his dear friend, Mary Bruhn of Cedar Falls.
Stratton was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 5, 2002 at St. Patrick Catholic Church with private inurnment at Greenwood Cemetery. RUBY KREBS, 91, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Thursday, January 31, 2002 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. ROLLIN "ROLLIE" G. EVERS was born March 24, 1925 in Arcadia, Iowa, the son of Grover William and Laura Elizabeth (Bruggeman) Evers. He married Cleone Stienkamp on June 17, 1947 in Arcadia. Rollie served with the U. S. Army in the European Theatre during WW II. He fought in many battles including the Battle of the Bulge. Rollie was a patrolman for four years with the Iowa State Patrol, a deputy sheriff with Boone County, Iowa for five years, served for a term as the Boone County Sheriff and was the first Public Safety Director for the University of Northern Iowa, retiring in 1987. He died Saturday, February 2, 2002 at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa at 76 years of age.
Rollie is survived by his wife, Cleone Evers of Cedar Falls; two sons, Mark Evers and his wife Carol of Mason City, Iowa and Doug Evers and his wife Jill of Kokomo, Indiana; a daughter, Renee Evers of Cedar Falls; six grandchildren, Elisa Anne Evers, Jay Douglas Evers, Jeffrey Paul Evers, Ryan Grover Evers, Nathan William Evers and Kristen Renee Evers; a brother, Kenneth Evers and his wife Dolores of Dubuque, Iowa and a special companion, his dog Anna Marie.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be 4 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Cedar Falls and one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. David Betts was born April 6, 1953 in Cedar Falls, Iowa the son of Richard and Annie (Muller) Betts. After two previous marriages, he married Marilyn E. Norpel on May 20, 1995 in Cedar Falls. David was an overhead crane operator at Weissman/O’Neal Steel for 29 years. He died Monday, April 8, 2002 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home at the age of 49 years.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of Waterloo; one son, Robert Lewis of Fairborn, Ohio; one daughter, Bobbie Jo Weekley of Oelwein, Iowa, four grandchildren, his parents, Richard and Annie Betts of Denver, Iowa; and his sister, Denise Pieper and her two children, Bryce & Nicole, of Iowa Falls, Iowa.
David was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents and one sister, Deborah Betts.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 11, 2002 at St. John Lutheran Church with burial in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home and for an hour preceding service time at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Pastor Ray M. Richardson (1922-2006)
WATERLOO -- Pastor Ray M. Richardson, 83, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, April 18, at Friendship Village.
He was born Nov. 11, 1922, in Algona, son of Roy Gilbert and Allida Ausirina Olson Richardson. He married Virginia Spear July 12, 1942, in Algona.
He attended college in Ottawa, Kan., and graduated from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, Chicago. He pastored Baptist churches in LaCrosse, Wis., Stewartville, Minn., Waukon, Waverly and Winterset prior to his retirement in 1989.
He was a master craftsman at tuning and rebuilding pianos for a number of years.
Survived by: his wife; three sons, Stephen (Susan) of Tampa, Fla., Mark (Debbie) of Clearwater, Fla., and Dan of Houston, Texas; four daughters, Mary (Gerry) Welch of East Cypress, Texas, Ginny (Jim) Garnet of Ankeny, Sharon (Doug) Laird of Robins and Marcia (Rev. Craig) Johnson of Indianola; 24 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; several great-grandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Black of Algona; and his stepmother, Beulah Richardson of Algona.
Preceded in death by: a son, Kenneth; a brother, Robert; and a brother-in-law, Robert Black.
Services: 10 a.m. Friday at Hagerman Baptist Church, Waterloo, with burial at 3 p.m. in Eastlawn Cemetery, Algona. Public visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Richardson Funeral Home, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Bobbie Campbell (1948-2006)
WATERLOO -- Bobbie Campbell, 58, of Inola, Okla., formerly of Waterloo, died Sunday, April 16,
She was born Jan. 14, 1948, in Waterloo, daughter of Jack and Ruth Berry Sargent. She married Mike Campbell on June 29, 1968, at First Baptist Church in Waterloo.
Mrs. Campbell graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1966, then attended Hawkeye Institute of Technology, where she studied business. She worked as a bookkeeper over trust operations at Bank of Oklahoma for 15 years. She most recently worked in real estate for Chumley and Associates.
Survivors include: her husband; two daughters, Stephanie (Jon) Hines of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Robin (Bruce Haley) of Inola; eight grandchildren; and a brother, John Sargent of Cape Code, Mass.
Preceded in death by: her parents; and a brother, Michael Sargent.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, with burial in Highland Cemetery, both in Inola. Public visitation 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at Inola Funeral Home & Crematory, with family present 5 to 7 p.m.
