In 1918 the Schwitters family moved to Steamboat Rock, Iowa, where Dan received his education. He married
Lillian Mae Frey, daughter of Hinderk "Henry" and Gerdine van Loh Frey, on August 12, 1939, at the Frey family home in Aplington, Iowa. Dan was employed by Janssen Farm Equipment Dealership, Eldora, Iowa and served briefly as Hardin County Deputy Clerk of Courts until 1941, when he joined the agricultural retail stores division of the John Deere Company. Following employment at the company's Hampton and Waterloo stores he became the acting manager of the company's Vinton store in 1943. In November 1944, in partnership with Merlin Rees, Dan purchased the John Deere Company's Cedar Rapids agricultural store. In January 1945, Dan and his family moved to Cedar Rapids. In January 1947 the agricultural equipment business was moved from its downtown location to a newly constructed building at the western edge of Cedar Rapids. Dan later purchased Mr. Ree's interests in that store and incorporated the business as Schwitters, Inc. An innovative entrepreneur and a strong advocate of advanced mechanical and agricultural technologies, he was a founding dealer principal of nine John Deere agricultural, industrial and consumer products stores located throughout eastern Iowa and eastern Colorado, which were later sold to others. He was a founder of Iowa Structures, Inc., the first Iowa distributor for A.O. Smith Company's Harvestore storage system, which was later sold to others. With his life-long devotion to both agriculture and the farm implement industry, Dan served on a number of local, regional and national organizations' boards and committees. In 1961 he was elected president of the Iowa Farm Equipment Dealers Association. In 1957 he had been elected a director of the North American Farm and Power Equipment Dealers Association and was elected president of that association in 1963. He remained a director of the National Association for nine years following his term in office. He was active in commercial real estate development in southwestern Cedar Rapids and several other eastern Iowa cities. A loving and devoted husband, father and father-in-law, Dan gave freely of his time and talents to a number of Cedar Rapids area institutions and service organizations. Dan was an active volunteer on the Camp Fire board, as well as assisting to prepare the camp for the campers. Dan was active in the Cedar Rapids JayCees, and had served on the board of directors of the Cedar Rapids/Marion Chamber of Commerce. He was a charter member of Elmcrest Country Club and served as the club's president in 1957. He was a 50 year member of Mt. Hermon Masonic Lodge #263 AF & AM, the Cedar Rapids Consistory and the El Kahir Shrine Temple. Dan was a former member of First Baptist Church, later becoming a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and treasurer. He was a 50 year member of the Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club. Dan was recognized and respected for his vast business acumen, which he willingly shared with those seeking his input and opinion. His departure leaves a void in the lives of many who knew him.
