Mrs. Maxine L. Thenhaus, 86, of Anderson, TX, passed away on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 3, 2010 at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Beth Straw of St. James United Methodist will officiate with burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call after 10:30 AM on Saturday at the chapel.

Survivors include her daughter, Pamela Brooks-Evans of Anderson, TX; and her grandchildren, Jessica Marie Brooks and Justin Matthew Brooks, also of Anderson, TX. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce A. Thenhaus; 5 brothers and 1 sister.

Maxine was born September 28, 1923 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Clarence and Lorena (Haynes) Van Alst.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Association.

Edna M. Smalldridge
Born in Alexander, Iowa on January 2, 1913
Departed on June 8, 2008. Resided in Marion, IA.

Edna M. Smalldridge, 95, of the Winslow House Care Center died there on Sunday June 8, 2008 from complications of old age. Services at 10:00 AM on Wednesday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Lloyd Brockmeyer will officiate. Burial at the Union cemetery in Iowa Falls at 2:30 PM on Wednesday Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 7 PM on Tuesday.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Paulsen and her husband, D. Rusty of Hiawatha, Lois Hessing of Marion and a son, James Smalldridge of Cedar Rapids. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and 12 brothers and sisters.
Edna was born on Jan. 2, 1913 in Alexander, the daughter of Paul and Mary Fernau Bobst. She married J. Laurence Smalldridge on Oct. 12, 1937. He died in 1971. Edna lived in the Clear Lake area for over 45 years and moved to Cedar Rapids in 1994. She worked at the Castle Cap and Gown Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1985. Edna was a faithful member of the Methodist Church and enjoyed gardening, rock collecting, crocheting and sewing. A memorial fund has been established in Edna's name.

Cleo E. Syferd

Cleo E. Syferd, 82, of 451 – 23rd Street NW, died at Living Center East, on Sunday, June 1, 2008, after a short illness. Services: 10 a.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. There will be a visitation at the Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel on Wednesday from 4- 7 p.m. and after 9 a.m. Thursday.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Darrol; two daughters, Cheryl Schneider and Karen Trimpe, both of Cedar Rapids; and two grandchildren, Jason and Rebbecca Nosek; and four great grandsons, Aidan, Brody, Keenen, and Pierce.

Lillias M. Lill Vavra
Born in Arlington, Iowa on December 17, 1922
Departed on August 24, 2007. Resided in Marion, IA.

Lillias M. "Lill" Vavra, 84, of 1748 10th Ave, Marion, died Friday, August 24, 2007, at Willow Gardens Care Center in Marion following a short illness. Services at 11 AM Monday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev Nick Longworth director of pastoral care at St. Luke's Hospital will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 2 to 5 PM on Sunday and at the chapel after 10:30 AM on Monday.

Survivors include a daughter Linda Little and husband Michael, son Rodney Vavra and wife Sheila, all of Marion, two sisters Larene Butler of Sioux City, Iowa, and Bonnie Bassett and husband Robert of Arlington, Iowa, four grandsons, Chad Little and wife Denise of Cedar Rapids, Shawn Little and wife Joyce of Anamosa, Troy Little and wife Katie of Marion, and Jason Vavra and wife Andrea of Cedar Rapids, and two great grand children Tate and Leah. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a grandson Todd Little and brother in law Rev. Robert Butler.

Lill was born December 17, 1922 in Arlington, Iowa to Leo and Nellie Miller Antwine. She married Rudolph J. Vavra on March 22, 1942 in Arlington, Iowa. He died January 23, 1999. She worked as a nurse's aid at St. Luke's Hospital and then as a inspector for Collins Radio. She enjoyed baking, crocheting, fishing, gardening, and being outdoors.

She will be greatly messed by her family and friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Hospice.

Mildred Pauline Swearingen
Born in Mt. Mourie, Missouri on May 30, 1920
Departed on May 30, 2008. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Mildred Pauline "Polly" Swearingen, 88, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully Thursday, May 30, 2008, while in the care of the dedicated staff at St. Luke's Hospital following a short illness. Funeral Services will be held at 1 PM Monday in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Dr. Glenn Hunt of Eden United Church of Christ will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 2 to 4 PM on Sunday and at the chapel after 12:30 PM on Monday.

Polly was born May 30, 1920, the daughter of William Clifford and Lucy Ethel Turner Parmer in Mt. Mourie, Missouri. Her parents moved to Iowa where she met and married Albert Swearingen on August 31, 1940. Polly's life was her family. There wasn't a weekend or holiday that Polly did not welcome all of her family and friends and shared her home to whomever needed one. She was a loving, caring, feisty spirited woman with a heart of pure gold. She will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her daughters: Shirley Herb, Joyce Rudy Chada, and Mary Swearingen all of Cedar Rapids, and JoAnn Auen of Latham, Missouri, sons Albert "Bud" Rita Swearingen and Dennis Ruth Swearingen all of Cedar Rapids, a brother Earl Parmer of Cedar Rapids, 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 6 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents William and Lucy Parmer, her husband Albert, brothers Otis, Garlin, Tommy, and Buster Parmer; sisters Pearl Harris, Lorine Keefer, Wanita Moore, and Eula Coutes; sons Raymond and Jerry Swearingen, granddaughter Lisa Marie Swearingen, and great grandson Adam Bartels.

A memorial fund has been established in Polly's honor.

Darrell Dean Yirkovsky
Born in Calmar, Iowa on April 1, 1939
Departed on March 3, 2010. Resided in Marion, Iowa.

Service: Friday, March 5, 2010
Darrell D. Yirkovsky, 70, of Marion, passed away on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at his home. Per Darrell’s wished his body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 5, 2010 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. Rev. John Gossman will officiate.

Survivors include his wife Marilyn; children Darrell Dean Boland, Mary Merwin, Dafney Yirkovsky, Holly Yirkovsky, Johnny Yirkovsky, Ronald Yirkovsky, DeAnn Yirkovsky, sisters Mariam Houser, Patty Bridge, Edna Hunter, Shirley Ottaway; and a brother Ron Yirkovsky, grandkids and great grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his parents James and Myrtle Yirkovsky.

Darrell was born April 1, 1939 in Calmar, IA the son of James and Myrtle (Bolonga) Olson-Yirkovsky. He married Marilyn Mundy on March 22, 1961 in Cedar Rapids. Ernest was a United States Army Veteran. He retired in 1998 after 18 years of service with the Linn County LIFTS. He was a member of the Yirkovsky family and loved by everyone.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Yirkovsky family.

Martha Trewin Sandy
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on August 10, 1916
Departed on May 29, 2008. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Martha Trewin Sandy, 91, died peacefully at home on Thursday May 29, 2008. Services: 2:00 p.m. Monday June 9th, at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev.Dr.William J. Pugliese officiating. 220 40th Street NE. Cedar Rapids, IA.

Survivors include her children, Cynthia Sandy Faust Gary of Carmel, Indiana, Michael D. Sandy of Santa Monica, California, Susan Allman David of Valencia, California, a sister, Charlotte Pansius of Rome, Georgia, 3 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, James A.Trewin.
Martha was born August 10, 1916 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Harold Rector and Muriel Arthur Trewin. She married M. Darwin Sandy on August 29, 1941 in Cedar Rapids. She was a graduate of University of Arizona in 1938. She was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority. She taught at Linn Mar High School and ran for Linn County Recorder. She was a founding member of St Michael's Episcopal Church Christ Episcopal Church, where she was a long time member of the choir. She also was a member of the Community Theater, Junior League, Shakespeare Club, Brother Lawrence Group, D.A.R. Panhellenic Club, and Cedar Rapids Country Club. She enjoyed golf, bowling, bird watching, and traveling the world. Martha loved spending time with her family.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to K O'Brien and all the caregivers for the love and care they gave to Martha, allowing her to remain in her home.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice in her name.
