Raymond Rex Stefani Sr., 78, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, March 9, 2008, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A Celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2008, at Noelridge Christian Church, 7111 C Avenue NE, Cedar Rapids, where there will also be military rites by Hanford Post No. 5. The Rev. Douglas Miller and Dr. Harold Watkins will officiate. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2008.
Ray was born April 25, 1929 in Ankeny, Iowa to Italian immigrant parents, Rex and Elisa Fontanini Stefani. He graduated from Ankeny High School in 1948 and lettered in 10 sports. He went on to attend the University of Iowa where he participated in football as a freshman. After attending the University of Iowa for three years, Ray served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. After his discharge from service, Ray was united in marriage to Phyllis Jean Wassom. He completed his undergraduate education and law school education at Drake University. He graduated with a Juris Doctorate degree from Drake Law School in 1956.
In 1960, Ray joined the law firm of Silliman, Gray & Stapleton and became an accomplished trial lawyer. The firm later changed its name to Gray, Stefani & Mitvalsky, P.L.C. Throughout his distinguished 52 year career, Ray tried civil cases in district courts across Iowa as well as both federal district courts in Iowa. He also argued cases before the United States Court of Appeals For The Eighth Circuit, the Iowa Supreme Court and the Iowa Court of Appeals. In 1983, he was inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers as a fellow.
During his professional career, Ray belonged to many professional legal associations. He was a 50 plus year member of the American Bar Association, the Iowa State and Linn County Bar Associations. During his years of membership in the Iowa State Bar Association, Ray served on many committees and he especially enjoyed serving on the Iowa Uniform Jury Instruction Committee with judges and lawyers, some of whom later became Iowa Supreme Court Justices. He also served on the Federal Advisory Committee of the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals from 1988-1992. Ray was elected President of the Linn County Bar Association in 1986. He was a long time member of the Iowa Defense Counsel Association where he served on its board of directors and was subsequently elected president in 1985. In 2004, The Iowa Defense Counsel Association made Ray a lifetime member of the organization.
Ray had many interests outside the practice of law. He was an active member of Noelridge Christian Church, and a former member of First Christian Church. He served on the board of trustees for both churches, as well as various committees. He also served on the board of directors for the National Board of Church Extension for 13 years. He enthusiastically served the Republican Party and worked hard in the election and re-election campaigns for his good friend, Governor Robert D. Ray. He was also a longtime member of the Linn Eagles.
Ray's number one passion was his love of family and. he took special pride in his four sons who all received their law degrees. He was an avid fan and supporter of the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Chicago Cubs and any activity in which his sons and grandchildren were involved. He rarely missed a game or an event in which they participated.
Ray is survived by his wife, best friend and confidant of 56 years, Phyllis, and sons, Ray II Kathy, Rick Diane, Randy Cindy and Steven; a brother Roger, and three sisters, Della Airey, Nancy Stefani and Mary Rose Fugaccia. He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, a brother, Marco and a sister, Rose Mary. Also, surviving Ray are 11 grandchildren: Bob Marisa, Kelly, Challee, Matt, A.J., Stacey, Ryan, Kelsey, Brett, Skylar and Trevor as well as two great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to Dr. David Rater and Dr. James Boddicker and the many compassionate nurses at Mercy Medical Center for the outstanding care Ray received over the past few years.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Ray's honor to the Noelridge Christian Church Building Extension Fund.

Geraldine 'Gerry' Dolores Stelling, Vinton, formerly of Atkins, died Saturday, March 1, 2008, after a brief illness. Services: 10 a.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel by the Rev. Mike Andrew of Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church, Atkins. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. A visitation will be held at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. and after 9 a.m. Friday.
Survivors include a son, Terry and wife Robin and one granddaughter, Sabrina Rose, all of San Rafael, California.
Geraldine was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

Thomas James Varnum, 62, of 1307 Forest Glen Ct. SE, died early Sunday morning, June 29, 2008, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids after a long illness. A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, July 7, 2008 at 2:00 PM at Christ Episcopal Church in Cedar Rapids by the Rev. Dr. William Pugliese, with a reception at the church to follow. Visitation will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A private inurnment service will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Barbara Schlacter on Monday, July 7 at Christ Church Columbarium.
He is survived by his wife Liz, daughter Katherine Varnum and her partner Patricia, and son Charles Varnum and fiancée Grace Rohwedder, all of Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by his sister, Marlys Varnum Allen of St.Louis, MO, an aunt Doris Varnum Ellis of Iowa Falls, IA, and a brother in law Walt Corey and his wife Linda of Cedar Rapids, his niece the Rev. Kelly Allen and husband John Rezentes and children Clare and David of BuckinghamShire, England, nephew Adam Allen and wife Heather and their children Chase and Blake of Bogotá, Columbia, and nephews Peter Corey and wife April of Ft. Worth, TX and Ryan Corey and fiancée Elizabeth Cearlock of Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by many beloved cousins and their families.
Tom was born in rural Radcliffe, IA on February 2, 1946, the son of Wayne and Jannett Harms Varnum. He graduated from Radcliffe High School and the University of Iowa. Tom was married
to Elizabeth Corey on August 24, 1968 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Cedar Rapids by Fr. Dominic Loferski. He worked in the medical billing and insurance industry, including 11 years at Mercy Hospital Family Practice Center and most recently for Principal Financial Group. Tom was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. He will be remembered for his faith, his love of antiques, cooking, history, a good joke, and his family.
Memorials may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, The Cedar Rapids Public Library, or to the charity of the donor's choice in Tom's name.

Dorothy H. Thompson, 82, of Cedar Rapids died Thursday, November 26, 2009 at St. Luke's Hospital following a brief illness.

Survivors include her son, David of Cedar Rapids; Daughter, Barbara (Neil) Van Slyke of Ames; Grandchildren, Amy (Andy) Richardson of Slater, IA, Julie (Kevin) Larsen of Grimes, IA and Tricia Higson of Lewisville, TX; five great grandchildren; Sister, Clara Heaton of Taylors, South Carolina.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert Thompson on August 31, 2008, daughter Janet Snow, 3 sisters and 1 brother.
Dorothy Hulda Schmidt was born January 7, 1927 in Waukon, IA the daughter of Arthur and Emma (Schnitker) Schmidt. She graduated from the Waukon High School in 1944 where she played basketball. On April 17, 1948 she married
Robert Thompson in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Dorothy was a homemaker, a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, King's Daughters, Keystone Club, loved to sew, play the piano, and enjoyed reading. She especially enjoyed spending time with family and holiday get-togethers.

Surviving in addition to her husband Richard are a son, Donald of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Patricia and Sherilyn both of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Marian of Oxnard, CA; two brothers, Jim of Lincoln, NE and Richard of Phoenix, AZ; nine grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Stanley and a sister Joyce.
Twila was born August 20, 1931 in Diller, Nebraska the daughter of Tiffus and Genevieve Diller Blauser. She married
Richard F. Schuller on November 12, 1950 in Fairberry, Nebraska. Twila worked for Northbrook Manor Care Center for eight years. Twila was an avid Bingo player, and loved to crochet, read, go for walks, volunteer and bake for people.
A memorial fund has been established.

Howard Roy “Howie” Snyder Jr., 58, of 285 19th Ave SW, died Tuesday, December 23, 2008, in his home following a long illness. Services with military honors will be held at 1 PM Saturday in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. William Harnish will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 8 PM on Friday and at the chapel after 12:30 PM on Saturday.
Survivors include his wife Donna Barnes, five daughters Dawn Neal, Patricia (Rich) Barnes, and Shanon (David) Barnes, all of Cedar Rapids, Kim (Jeff) Cook of Center Point, and Beth Ann Snyder of Clear Lake, Iowa, a sister Sandy Noland of Mason City, two brothers Mark Snyder of Eaglewood, Iowa, and Andy Snyder of Mason City, Iowa, and 15 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Howie was born March 7, 1950 in Akron, Ohio to Howard Roy and Lola Eve Adams Snyder Sr. He served in the Army during the Vietnam war. He was a utility man at Cryovac for 32 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, football, and spending time with his family and friends.
