Bernadette T. Yirkovsky, 78, of 309 12th St. in Marion died Saturday, August 15, 2009 at her home after a long illness. Services at 1:00 PM on Tuesday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Entombment at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 7 PM on Monday.
Survivors include eight children, Sharon (David) Merwin, of Marion, Joseph (Connie) of Schleswig, Sandra Wyatt of Marion, Donald (Linda) of Swisher, Bonnie (Lyle) Himes of Marion, Roger (Tammy), Jeffrey and William (Lisa) all of Marion, three brothers, Charles Steffes of Marion, Raymond and Clem Steffes both of Minnesota and two sisters, Annie Jensen of Cedar Rapids and Gertrude Johnson of Minnesota, 13 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother, Andy and a sister, Margie.
Bernadette was born on April 23, 1931 in Fort Atkinson, the daughter of Clem and Anna Kipp Steffes. She married
James “Bud” Yirkovsky on Aug. 20, 1947 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He died in 1993. Bernadette worked at Collins Radio and retired from there after many years of service. She enjoyed playing bingo, crocheting, going to the casinos, canning and especially time spent with her beloved family.
A memorial fund has been established in Bernadette’s name.

Clair G. Unruh, 76, of 833 Oakland Rd NE, died Wednesday, October 19, 2005, in his home following a short illness. Services at 11 Am Monday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Ronald Thatcher will officiate. Entombment with military rites in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 2 to 5 PM on Sunday and at the chapel after 10:30 AM on Monday.
Survivors include his wife Joy, his children Dennis Unruh and wife Cindy of Independence, Kentucky, Joseph Unruh and wife Teresa of Webster, Iowa, Kathleen Miller and fianc? Mike Henry of Cedar Rapids, Robbie Ward and husband Kevin of Belle Plaine, Iowa, Judith Birely and husband George of Anamosa, five step children Teressa and Mark Snyder, Jim and John Kinser, and Mary Henson all of Cedar Rapids, four sisters Naomi Sell of Tipton, Iowa, Delores Trular and Lorraine Rudloff both of Cedar Rapids, and Joyce Miller of Mechanicsville, Iowa, 19 grandchildren, Ryan, Sarah, Nichole, Nathaniel, Marsha, Chris, Ben, Danielle, Ashley, Eric, Marvin, John, Michael, Jeremy, Colleen, Jessica, Luke, Jacob, and Les, and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Maxine, and seven brothers Lawrence, Glen, Ray, Fay, Henry, Clyde, and Robert.
Clair was born August 5, 1929 in Mechanicsville, Iowa, to Louis and Bertha Hudson Unruh. He married
Joy Kinser on October 1, 1988, in Cedar Rapids. He was a Truck Driver for Momson Trucking for several years. He served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He loved to fish, play black jack, and be of service to people. He was a grandpa to all children that knew him.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
Mamie Lou Wright

Mamie Lou Wright, 97, a resident of Heritage Nursing & Rehab died there Tuesday September 2, 2003 following a brief illness. Services: 1:00 p.m. Friday at Turner East Funeral Home & Crematory, where friends may call tonight from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. The Rev. Kay Slocum will officiate.
Survivors include 4 daughters, Frances WhitePaul of Cedar Rapids, Betty Parmer Earl of Cedar Rapids, Edna Hogan of Cedar Rapids, Mary Clymer Bob of Cedar Rapids, 2 sons, John Wright Sue of Alabama and Bill Wright Sharonof Cedar Rapids, 2 sisters, Edna Chambers of New York City, New York, and Della Reiken of California, and a daughter in law, Doreen Wright of Georgia.
Also surviving are 29 grandchildren, 49, great grandchildren and 23 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest Wright, Harold in infancy and Robert Wright, son in law, Gene Hogan and 3 grandchildren.
Mamie was born April 19, 1906 in Synder, Texas, the daughter of John Sterling and Mary Murray Sterling. She married
Forrest Wright on December 24, 1924 in Arkansas. Mamie worked on the line at Wilson Foods. She was a member of Cedar Rapids Eagles and AFLC10-P3-Union. Mamie loved playing cards, sewing and gambling, which she won often. She was also a great cook and pie maker.
Nicholas John "Nick" Stavropoulos

Nicholas John “Nick” Stavropoulos, 74, of 423 32nd Street SE, died Saturday, April 4, 2009, in Mercy Medical Center following a long illness. Funeral Mass will be held at All Saints Catholic Church at 10 AM Tuesday with Rev. David O’Connor officiating. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 PM Monday in Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home with a Wake service beginning at 5 PM.
Survivors include his wife Linda, two daughters Anne Marie Stavropoulos, and Christine (Tim) Mason, and a brother Peter (Gloria) Stavropoulos, and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Katine, two brothers, Antonio and Nick.
Nick was born September 10, 1934 in Demetra, Greece to John and Efthemia Dalamaggas Stavropoulos. He married
Linda Flanagan on September 27, 1969, in Manchester, Iowa.
Nick had been employed by Penick and Ford, and ADM Corn Sweeteners. He had also been a tailor for Armstrong’s and Clancys. He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to All Saints Catholic Church.

Rita M. Ungs, 83, of 859 Kerry Lane SE died Friday June 19, 2009 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy after a short illness. Funeral Mass: 10:00 AM on Monday at St. Matthew Catholic Church where friends may call after 9:00 AM on Monday. Rev. Mark Osterhaus will officiate. Burial at Mt. Calvary cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter, Jane (Gerald) Monserud of Iowa City, a son, Tom (Janet) Marbach of Cedar Rapids, three step-daughters, Deborah (Wenger) Ungs, Ellen Angell and Anne Tapp all of Rockford, Illinois; two step- sons, Greg Ungs of Wichita Falls, Texas and Steven Ungs of Rockford, Illinois. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Nicholas (Heather) Monserud, Bryan Monserud, and several step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, a sister, Lucille Jenn, three brothers, Ralph, Raymond and Howard Eischeid and a step-son, Matt Ungs.
Rita was born on Dec. 9, 1925 in New Hampton, the daughter of John and Susan Rausch Eischeid. She married
Norbert Marbach on June 30, 1947 in North Washington. He died in 1973. She later married
Donald Ungs on May 15, 1993 in Cedar Rapids. He died in 2005. She worked outside the home at JCPenneys and later at Iowa National Insurance Company until retirement. Rita was a faithful member of St. Matthew Catholic Church. She was a loving wife, mother, and friend who touched the lives of those who knew her. She was a talented seamstress, crafter, cook and did daily crosswords up until her hospitalization. Rita was greatly loved and will be missed by all.
Memorial donations may be given to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Rita’s name.
Ellen Sunde

Ellen Sunde, 88, of Heritage Nursing and Rehab died there on Thursday April 23, 2009 after a brief illness. Memorial services at 11:00 AM on Monday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Dr. Kay Slocum will officiate. Inurnment at Cedar Memorial Park Mausoleum Columbarium. A reception to honor Ellen’s life will be held at a later date. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Ingrid McHugh, and Ann Sunde and her special friend, Rick Wilson, all of Cedar Rapids, two sisters, Alfhild (Bertram) Arntsen of Oslo, Norway and Ase Jongers of Nesodden, Norway. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Amy Christine McHugh and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and a son, John.
Ellen was born on April 17, 1921 in Oslo, Norway, the daughter of Olaf and Inga Myrne Nord. She married
John Sunde on June 30, 1946 in Cedar Rapids. He died in 1981. Ellen was a homemaker. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, Sons of Norway and the International Women’s club. Ellen enjoyed gardening, and especially time spent with her beloved family.
Memorial donations may be given to Mercy Hospice or to the charity of the donor’s choice in Ellen’s name.

Dewain L. Sparrgrove, 91, formerly of Keystone Cedars, died at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Tuesday, May 19, 2009. Memorial Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by the Rev. Dr. Dale Holloway of Living Hope Wesleyan Church. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Dewain is survived by children, Dewain (Kathy) Sparrgrove of Des Moines, Cinda (Bill) Tanner of Iowa City, Bill (Chris) Sparrgrove of Ft. Myers, Fl, Phil Sparrgrove of Cedar Rapids, Eric (Kathy) Sparrgrove of Mission, TX, Kristi (Greg) Mumford of Marion, Debbie (Bob) Lumpa of Saudi Arabia, Karen (Jeff) Hanover of Waterloo; stepchildren, Mary (Richard) Milbauer of Apache Junction, AZ, Barbara (Tom) Donofrio of Stevensville, MT, and Donald (Terri) Enck of Poway, CA; sister, Lorene (Dallas) Stratton of Ocala, FL; 18 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and several step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two wives, a sister, Gladys, and a granddaughter, Jennifer.
Dewey was born May 10, 1918 in Marengo to William and Cinderilla Hawkins Sparrgrove. He owned Dewey’s Jack & Jill Store, in West Branch and Traer. He was in the grocery business for over 38 years, retiring in 1983. He married
Marjorie Louise Anthony in 1940. She died in 1993. He married
Donna Joan Enck in 1994. She died in 2002.
Dewey was a member of the Presbyterian church and United Commercial Travelers. He loved wintering in Arizona and playing horseshoes, bicycling, and card playing. He spent a lot of time reading and listening to taped westerns.
