Marilyn Van Hoe, 78, 4515 Westchester Dr. NE died Tuesday, October 23, 2007 at her home following a brief illness. Services: 10:00 A.M. Friday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Thursday from 4PM to 8PM with a Rosary Service at 6:00 P.M. Msgr. Karl Glovik will officiate.

Survivors include three daughters, Margaret Maulandi Aymon of Robins, Lorraine Van Hoe of Portland, OR, and Jean Phillippe Randy of Cedar Rapids; five sons, Joseph Van Hoe of Iowa City, Larry Van Hoe of Cedar Rapids, Marty Van Hoe of Iowa City, Steve Van Hoe Daphne of Oceanside, CA, and Tom Van Hoe of Marion; two sisters, Elaine Garrison of Moline, IL and Patricia Coats of Sarasota, FL; 13 grandchildren, Anne Deutmeyer Daryl, Amy Duggan Mark, Joe Vanek Sharon, Marty Van Hoe, Jennifer Van Hoe, Lisa Hansen, Michael Hansen, John Van Hoe, Michael Van Hoe, Christine Van Hoe, Danny Van Hoe, Nicole Phillippe and Jake Phillippe; and several great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers Gene Larson and Jim Larson; and two sisters Rose Ann Mosenfelder and Nancy Carlson.

Marilyn was born February 3, 1929 in Rock Island, IL the daughter of Otto H. and Irene McGivern Larson. She married Joseph L. Van Hoe on September 27, 1947 in Rock Island, IL. They later divorced. Marilyn was an investigator for the Friend of the Court, retiring in 1994. She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, was a Mercy Hospice volunteer for several years, as well as a volunteer mediator for Linn County Small Claims Court for 14 years. Marilyn enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling and doing volunteer work. Her infectious laugh and her quick wit will be dearly missed.

Memorials may be made to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.

Jack J. Zazza
Born in Yonkers, New York on May 14, 1921
Departed on June 29, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Jack J. Zazza, 89, of 161 Kyrie Drive SE, died June 29, 2010 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy following an extended illness. Private family funeral services will be held at a later date. Friends may call from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Thursday, July 1, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Entombment will take place at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories Mausoleum.

Surviving are his daughter Sue Zazza-Hutchcroft and husband Gerry of Cedar Rapids; daughter-in-law Karen Zazza of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Scott Kunce of Pittsburg, PA, and Michelle and Holly Zazza both of Cedar Rapids; great grand daughter Hayden Zazza-Taylor; sister Linda Viggiano of Yonkers, NY; his committed partner Cris Steichen of Pompano Beach, FL; as well as several nieces and extended family and friends.

Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mildred, his loving son Alan, brothers George and Charles, sisters Lucy Zazza and Julia Moscato, and his parents.

Jack Joseph Zazza was born May 14, 1921 in Yonkers, New York, the beloved son of Joseph G. and Elizabeth (Trombetta) Zazza. He served his country honorably in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII. During his time in the service, he also attended Coe College. He married Mildred (Millie) J. Simanek on December 24, 1944 in Cedar Rapids, and enjoyed 53 years of marriage. Mildred preceded him in death on February 21, 1997. Jack was owner and president of Simanek & Zazza Plumbing and Heating for many years. He was partner in building Willow Brook Assisted Living (currently Silver Pines). In 1976 he built and operated the Clarion Hotel and Convention Center (formerly the Sheraton Inn) in Cedar Rapids until its sale in 2007.

Jack was a member of the Cedar Rapids Home Builder’s Association, El Kahir Shrine, Elmcrest Country Club, and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.

Jack enjoyed fishing in Canada, family trips, golfing, cooking large Italian meals, and above all his time spent with his beloved family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials are made to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in honor of Jack.

Helen May Schultz
Born in Portland, Oregon on January 27, 1932
Departed on March 11, 2010. Resided in Williamsburg, Iowa.

Helen M. Schultz, 78, a resident of Highland Ridge Community in Williamsburg, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died March 11, 2010 at Mercy Hospital-Iowa City following a unexpected illness. Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM, Friday, March 19, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Pastor Kirk Statler, Chaplain at Highland Ridge, will officiate. Friends may call from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Entombment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery.

Surviving are her daughters Sheila Kann and husband Rodney of Mason City, and Cindy Lower and husband Jimmy of Parnell; grandchildren Carrie, Dawn (Chad), Eric, Luke (Lisa), Nate (Laci), and Trent; and great grandchildren Clayton, Jenn, Madison, Averie, and Caden.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband.

Helen May Schultz was born January 27, 1932 in Portland, Oregon the daughter of Willis W. and Marie M. (Koenig) White. Following her education she was employed as an LPN at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. She was married to Paul W. Schultz on August 11, 1950 in Vancouver, Washington; he preceded her in death in 1993. She and her husband were both members of VFW # 788. Helen enjoyed playing cards and bingo, and fishing. Above all her greatest enjoyment was time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her family.

Verna M. Van Vreede
Born in Albia, Iowa on September 28, 1917
Departed on October 9, 2008. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Verna M. Draheim Van Vreede, 91, of Cottage Grove Place died there on Thursday Oct. 9, 2008 after a short illness. Services at 10:00 AM on Monday in the Great Room at Cottage Grove Place where friends may call from 9:00 AM until service time. Rev. Mark Osterhaus will officiate. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her son, David (Cheryl) Draheim of Cedar Rapids. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Diane (Douglas) Rohloff of Fremont, Nebraska and Shane Draheim of Hampton, Virginia; three great grandchildren, Justin and Matthew Rohloff, Alexis Draheim, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, and 10 brothers and sisters.
Verna was born on Sept. 28, 1917 in Albia, the daughter of Francis and Elizabeth Oris Kolvek. She married Reuben Draheim on April 8, 1939 in Cedarberg, Wisconsin. He died in 1966. She later married Cletus Van Vreede on March 21, 1975 in Chicago, Illinois. He died in 2006. Verna was a homemaker and a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church. She did hospital volunteer work for several years and enjoyed crafts, especially hooking rugs a Cottage Grove Place. The family requests, please no flowers, memorial donations may be given to St. Matthew Catholic Church in Verna’s name.

Dustin James Tardiff
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii on January 23, 1988
Departed on March 5, 2013. Resided in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Dustin James Tardiff, 25, of Charlotte, North Carolina, died Tuesday March 5, 2013. Services: 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, where a visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his fiancé, Alicia L. Strank currently of Hickory, North Carolina; his parents, Ronald E. Jr. and Christine J. Tardiff of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Isabelle W. Tardiff and fiancé Adam Rotter of Marion; his grandparents, Ronald E. Sr. and Mary A. Tardiff of Alamogordo, New Mexico and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert D. and Evelyn V. Cold.

Dustin was born January 23, 1988 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He graduated from Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania in 2006. Dustin graduated in 2010 with highest distinction from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, a minor in Mathematics and earned a Certificate in Technological Entrepreneurship. He was active in the Society of Automotive Engineers while at the University of Iowa. Dustin and Alicia met while they were both attending the University of Iowa.

Dustin went on to receive his International Master of Business Administration degree at the University of South Carolina in 2012. He was currently working as a Senior Consultant for Ernst & Young in North Carolina and had received his Project Management Professional certificate. Dustin loved to travel internationally; as a result he was conversational in German and Spanish. Dustin enjoyed spending time with his family. He enjoyed activities to keep physically fit and was developing an investment analysis system in his spare time. He also loved playing a spirited game of Monopoly. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

A memorial fund has been established.

Billy J. Smith
Born in Delaware County on May 20, 1928
Departed on March 13, 2010. Resided in Hiawatha, Iowa.

Billy J. Smith, 81, of 2115 1st Ave. NE died Saturday March 13, 2010 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy after a short illness. Memorial services at 11:00 AM on Tuesday at Christ Episcopal Church. Rev. Barbara Schlachter will officiate. Inurnment in Christ Episcopal Church Columbarium. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Randy (Kathy) of Cedar Rapids; Russell (Cathy) of Whitesboro, Texas and a daughter, Maureen (Craig) Gossard of Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Trisha (Chip) DePreter of Chicago, Illinois, Erin (Jon) Holstrom of Urbandale, Elizabeth (Brad) Parsons of Cedar Rapids, Racquel (Scott) Phieler of Robins and Riley Smith of Hollywood, California; four great grandchildren, Nathan Holstrom, Dean DePreter, and Kaitie and Olivia Parsons. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, his parents, a brother, Roger and a sister Jean Reed.
Billy was born on May 20, 1928 in Delaware County, the son of Martin and Hazel Kieser Smith. He graduated from Lamont High School and attended Upper Iowa University. He married Doris E. Barger on August 8, 1948 in Strawberry Point. She died in 2008. Billy was the owner and sales manager of Skyline Harvestore Systems in Nashua for over 17 years. He was a faithful member of Christ Episcopal Church and proudly served in the Navy during WWII.
Billy was a very talented wood worker and sculpturer. He had three woodworking books published and the bulk of his art work is on permanent display in the Carnegie Cultural Center in New Hampton. Billy enjoyed horses, the outdoors and especially the time he spent with his many friends and beloved family.
Memorial donations may be given to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy or to the Cottage Grove Foundation in Billy’s name.
