Wava M. Siefken, 89, of Marion, IA died Sunday, March 14, 2010 at Mercy Hospital, Cedar Rapids.

Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Tuesday, March 16 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids. Services: 1:00 pm Thursday, March 18, 2010 at Zion Lutheran Church, Rockford, IA. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery, Rockford, IA. Visitation will be from 11:30 am until service time at the church on Thursday.

Survivors include her children, Jerry (Loni) Siefken of Rudd, IA, Janice (David) Willert of Rockford, IA, Keith (Minnie Sue) Siefken of Cedar Rapids, Pam (Randy) Patterson of Cedar Rapids, Dean Siefken of Kewaskum, WI; Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter (Sandra Losee) and 3 brothers.

Wava M. (Merriss) Siefken was born December 29, 1920, the daughter of Byron & Gertrude (Bates) Merriss. She married John Siefken and they later divorced. She worked in Dr. Carnes office in Cedar Rapids for many years. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and loved her.

A memorial fund has been established in her name.

Marjorie Eleanor Spicher
Born in Holton, Kansas on April 23, 1924
Departed on April 7, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Marjorie “Marge” Eleanor Spicher, 85, of Cedar Rapids, died April 7, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM, Saturday, April 10, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Carroll Brown will officiate. Friends may call from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, April 9, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery.

Surviving are her three daughters Sandra Mentzer, Sharon Buhr and husband Steven, and Susan Behrends and husband Randy all of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren Tammy, Jeff, Michael, Ryan, Jenna, Jamie, and Kelsy; 10 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; brother Roger Eubanks and wife Margaret of Holton, KS; and a sister Joan Decker and husband Cecil of Yuma, AZ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother Paul Eubanks.

Marge was born April 23, 1924 in Holton, Kansas the beloved daughter of Ralph and Alice (Glenn) Eubanks. She was united in marriage to Donald H. Spicher on April 13, 1943 in Topeka, KS. He preceded her in death on August 24, 1969. She was employed for several years as a bookkeeper at the Linn County Auditor’s office. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and sewing. She also had a great love for her Chihuahua, Baby, who preceded Marge in death by one week. Above all, her greatest enjoyment was the time spent with her family. She will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Marge’s honor may be made to the Iowa Lion’s Eye Bank.

Sandra Kay Thoman
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on June 6, 1933
Departed on March 29, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Sandra Kay Thoman, 76, of Cedar Rapids passed away on Monday, March 29, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 1, 2010 at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 until 11 AM on Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories.

Survivors include her daughters Connie (David) Elliott of Cedar Rapids, and Mary (Andy) Brown of Poplar Bluff, MO; grandchildren Colette (Tim) Stokan, and Harrison Elliott, and a great granddaughter Alayna Stokan.

She was preceded in death by her husband Vernon, parents Donald and Kathryn Lackey, and a granddaughter Kathryn Elliott.

Sandra was born June 6, 1933 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Donald and Kathryn (Arends) Lackey. She married Vernon E. Thoman on June 24, 1953 in Cedar Rapids. Vernon passed away on October 18, 2003. Sandra was a member of the St. Ludmila’s Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, and former member of the St. Monica’s Circle. Her hobbies and interest included spending time with her family and friends and crafts. Sandra was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who will be greatly missed.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Ronald Royce Schirm
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on November 25, 1931
Departed on April 21, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Ronald R. Schirm, 78, of Cedar Rapids, died at home, Wednesday, April 21, 2010. Memorial Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church by the Rev. Jonathan Offt with military services. A visitation will be held on Monday at the church from 4 to 8 p.m. and after 9 a.m. Tuesday. Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Ron is survived by his wife, Donna Wray, of 58 years; children, Kevin (Becky) Schirm of Centreville, VA and Debra (Tony Oppegard) Schirm of Lexington, KY; grandchildren, Sabra, Kelsey, Kendall, Ariana, Laura, Aaron, and Ryan; sister, Marilyn (Gordon) Kerkman of Aurora, IL; and sister-in-law, Jan Schirm of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gary Schirm.

Ron was born November 25, 1931 in Cedar Rapids to Jim and Mildred Winn Schirm. He married Donna Wray Jones on April 26, 1951 in Hannibal, MO. Ron graduated from Coe College and received a Master’s degree in education from the University of Iowa. He was an educator and coach in the Cedar Rapids School district for over 47 years; first at Wilson Junior High, then at Jefferson High School.

Ron was admitted to the Iowa High School Assistant Football Coach Hall of Fame and recently inducted to the Jefferson Track Hall of Fame. Ron was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and an Army veteran during the Korean Conflict.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Helene Sturtz
Born in Sioux City, IA on May 20, 1930

Helene Sturtz, 79, of Cedar Rapids, IA died Sunday, May 9, 2010 at the Mercy Hospital, Cedar Rapids following a brief illness.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, May 22, 2010 at St. James United Methodist Church with the Rev. Beth Straw officiating. A gathering will be held from 9-11 am at the church prior to the service on Saturday.

Survivors include her children, William (Fancha) Sturtz of Rochester, N.Y., Robert (Jane) Sturtz of Winnebago, MN, Dean (Kristie) Sturtz of Swisher, DeWayne Sturtz of Marion, Diane (Gary) Arp of Cedar Rapids; Brother, Alfred (Phyllis) Kern of Reno, NV. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, former spouse James Sturtz in 1973 and a sister, Rosalie Gandy.

Helene F. Kern was born May 20, 1930 in Sioux City, IA the daughter of Robert & Marie (Bohme) Kern. On February 12, 1950 she married James B. Sturtz in Elk Point, South Dakota. They later divorced. Helene raised five children on her own while attending Mt. Mercy College where she received her B.A. degree in Education in 1974. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church, was a water safety instructor for the Cedar Rapids YMCA and for the Cedar Rapids Municipal Pools especially Ellis Park Pool. Helene worked for the Cedar Rapids Public School System with at risk children and then worked for the Cedar Rapids Gazette for 15 years until retirement. Her hobbies included gardening, reading and music. Helene was known and loved as “Mom” to many and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Virginia Marie Wehmeyer
Born in Ft. Madison, IA. on September 21, 1924
Departed on April 2, 2004. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Service: Monday, April 12, 2004

Virginia Marie Wehmeyer, 79, of 296 Indiandale Rd. SE entered eternal life Friday April 2, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident on Thursday, April 1. 2004. Services at 1 PM Monday in All Saints Catholic Church. Rev. David O'Connor and Rev. Doug Loecke will officiate. Burial in St. John's cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Sunday with a scriptural wake service beginning at 7 PM.
Survivors include her husband Thomas, a son Thomas J. Wehmeyer and wife Susan of Cedar Rapids, a daughter Connie Kay Jeske and husband Bob of Eldora, Iowa, four grandchildren, Dan Wehmeyer, Robert, Julie, and Richard Jeske, and many special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother John J. Rempe.
Virginia was born September 21, 1924 in Ft. Madison, Iowa to John and Katherine Budke Rempe. She graduated from Catholic Central High School in Fort Madison, Iowa. On August 30, 1947, she was united in Holy Matrimony with Thomas H. Wehmeyer at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fort Madison, Iowa. The union was blessed with 56 years of special love and commitment that deepened with each year.
Virginia retired from Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1979 after 30 years of service. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, Mercy Auxiliary, and the Elks club. She loved to e-mail her friends and was an avid sports fan especially the Iowa Hawkeye's.
In addition to being a devoted wife, Virginia was a dedicated mother, grandmother, and aunt who gave unselfishly. She was a great role model and had endless energy for her interactions with friends and family. She will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she has touched. Memories with Virginia will be treasured always.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
