He traveled to many places and told marvelous stories of those travels, from picking apples in Wenatchee, WA as a teenaged "hobo" to seeing for himself where native crafts were made in Kenya. He and Elfriede operated Cedar Rapids Hardware in downtown Cedar Rapids for 30 years, finding more interest with imported wares than hardware. Joe and Marian enjoyed camping and gardening, as he had a great love for flowers. Joe was a longtime member of Conopus Club and the Cedar Rapids Elks Club.
The family is grateful for the kind wishes of those who knew Joe and the wonderful loving care provided by St. Luke's Hospital and St. Luke's Hospice. The family requests that, per Joe's wishes, in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to St. Luke's Hospice.
