Naomi J. Hix
Services: Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2001 from 5:00-8:00 PM at the Overton Funeral Home in Dysart. Funeral services are to be held on Friday, April 13, 2001 at 10:30am at the Dysart United Methodist Church. Burial is at the Dysart Cemetery.
Memorial Fund: In lieu of flowers, memorials are to be directed to the Dysart Library Fund.
Naomi Jeanette Hix was born on November 10, 1920 at Elkader, Iowa; the daughter of John and Martha (Ortman) Bock. She received her education at Elkader Schools, graduating from Elkader High School in the class of 1937. On November 14, 1941, Naomi was united in marriage to Edmund Hix at Elkader, Iowa. They made their home in Seattle, WA while Ed served in the United States Navy during World War II. After Ed’s discharge, they returned to live in Dysart. Naomi worked for Merle Olson at the Community Service Agency in Dysart for a time before working for the Dysart-Geneseo Community School District. She first started working as the school board secretary and later became the secretary at the Geneseo building for many years, from which Naomi retired. Ed passed away on September 24, 1987, and Naomi continued to live in Dysart. She had been a patient at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids for a short time, where her death came on Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at the age of 80 years. Naomi was a member of the Dysart United Methodist Church and a former member of the Peace United Church of Christ, both in Dysart. She spent nearly 50 years as a member of the Dysart Library Board. In her spare time, she loved to read, do needle work, watched sports on television and enjoyed playing bridge with her friends. Naomi was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ed, a brother Jerry Bock and 2 sisters, Kathleen Frick and Frances Cotton. She is survived by 2 sons; John (Neeva Gayle) Hix of Tottenham, Ontario, Canada and Chuck Hix of Swisher, a daughter Jeanette Tampir of Swisher, 4 grandsons, Jason, Jared, Troy and Tyler, a great granddaughter Madelyn and a sister Inez Dru’yor of Prairie du Chien, WI.
Arthur Roger Hoeppner

Arthur Roger Hoeppner was born on September 14, 1925 in Grant Township near Dysart, Iowa; the son of Alfred and Amanda Johanna (Ohrt) Hoeppner. He attended country school and then began working on the family farm. Art then farmed for 10 years southwest of Keystone. He married Mardean Stein and was later divorced. Art ran a Shell gas station for a time in Cedar Rapids and was also employed by Charter Coaches. On September 1, 1967, he married Jewell Glowacki in Marion and they made their home in Voorhies, Iowa and later lived in Arkansas before retiring to Dysart. Art worked for many years at the University of Northern Iowa, working on buses and driving them as well, and worked at a service station in Arkansas. Jewell died on January 2, 1994 and Art continued to live in Dysart. More recently he has made his home in Oxford, Iowa. Art’s death came suddenly on Sunday evening, August 12, 2001 at Grinnell Regional Medical Center, Grinnell, Iowa. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and woodworking. Art was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Elmer and a sister Thelma Whannel. He is survived by 2 sons and their wives; Roger and Sue of Cedar Rapids & Reed and Shirley of Conroy, 2 daughters and their husbands; Bonnie and Ken Hackman of Lampe, MO & Becky and Mike Welsh of Cedar Rapids, 2 step-sons and their wives; William and Carol Allen & Mike and Pam Glowacki, both of Marion, 2 step-daughters and their husbands; Judy and Wayne Pinson of Evans, GA & Trudy and Terry Carroll of Colorado Spring, CO, 2 sisters; Marlys (Mrs. Robert) Finzen of Dysart & Loretta Busch of Tama; 25 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Rick A. Hopkins
Services: Visitation is on Thurs., Nov. 29, 2001 from 4-8pm. The funeral service is on Fri., Nov. 30, 2001 at 10:30 am at the United Methodist Church in Dysart. Burial will be at the Dysart Cemetery.

Rick Allen Hopkins was born October 12, 1971 at Cedar Rapids, IA, the son of Richard and Ronda (Petersen) Hopkins of Keystone, IA. He attended high school in Cedar Rapids at Kennedy. For the last 15 years Rick has resided at Harmony House in Waterloo, IA. Recently he had been a patient at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, when his death came on Sunday, November 25, 2001 at the age of 30 years. Rick is survived by his parents, Richard & Ronda of Dysart, IA, two sisters, Gina Dighton of Cedar Rapids, IA and Rani Burton of Hiawatha, IA, a step brother Richard Hopkins of Cedar Rapids, IA, two step sisters, Cindy Love and Tammy Hopkins of Moore, OK, his grandmothers, Leah Petersen of Dysart, IA and Louella Torrence of MN. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Gene Petersen and Jay Torrence.
Alma E. Junge
Services: Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, May 22, 2001, from 4-8pm at Overton Funeral Home in Dysart, IA. A Funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at 10:30 am. Burial will be at the Dysart Cemetery, Dysart, IA. A luncheon will be at the Calvary Baptist Church fellowship hall in Dysart.

Alma Earnestine Junge was born on July 19, 1901 south of Dysart, Iowa, the daughter of Richart and Kate (Schreiber) Hark. She received her education in country school and on January 10, 1922 was united in marriage to Herman Obrosk. They made their home farming near Dysart before moving in 1946 into Dysart. In addition to raising her family, Alma worked as a telephone operator, was employed by the Dysart Cleaners and at the Busy Bee Café in Dysart. Alma continued her residence in Dysart following Herman’s death on May 13, 1947. She later married Eldo Junge and they remained in Dysart. Following Eldo’s death, Alma moved to make her home at Sunnycrest Care Center in Dysart where her death came on Sunday, May 20, 2001 at the age of 99 years. In free moments Alma enjoyed sewing, tending her flower garden and volunteering at Sunnycrest Care Center where she called Bingo for many years. Alma is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, a daughter Flossie Gravatt, a brother, three sisters, two grandchildren, a great grandchild and a step grandchild. She is survived by a son, Keith Obrosk of Dysart, IA, three daughters: Beatrice Losenicky of Dysart, IA, Rachel Vaitkus of Broadview, IL, Ruth Franck of Independence, IA. A sister Mabel Jungk of Dubuque, IA, 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 11 great great grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren and 8 step great grandchildren.
Robert "Bob" Kriz
Services: 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 5, 2001 at St Joseph's Catholic Church, Dysart, Iowa with Rev. Joseph McGuire celebrating. Burial at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Dysart. Friends may call at Overton Funeral Home in Dysart from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, The Rosary will be recited at 3:00 pm and a Scripture service at 5:00 p.m.

Robert “Bob” Kriz was born August 11, 1924 in rural Clutier, Iowa, the son of Albert and Mary (Zmolek) Kriz. Robert received his education in Clutier and graduated from Clutier High School in 1942. He continued his education in aircraft school in Michigan and in 1944 was drafted in the United States Navy and served his country during World War II. Following his discharge he was united in marriage to Marjorie Kopriva on October 28, 1947. Robert worked for various business including Tama County, Roy Johnson Construction, Youngblut Construction and Mannatts where he retired in 1989. Following his retirement Robert continued to work for Mannatts and enjoyed doing woodworking projects for his family and friends. He also enjoyed having his grandchildren around and loved polka music. On Wednesday evening Robert became ill at home and was taken to Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo where he died early Thursday morning, February 1, 2001 at the age of 76 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers Wesley and Tony. He is survived by his wife Marjorie, one son Kendall and Brenda Kriz of Dysart, three daughters, Judy (Mrs. Rex) Raub of Dysart, Mary Kriz Freese of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Sue (Mrs. Rick) Crawford of Dysart, two sisters, Leona Adam and Gladine Lemon both of Waterloo, 12 grandchildren, Heather, Valerie, Rachel, Joey and Natalie Raub, Josh and Darcey Freese, Kirk and his wife Amy, Kamie and her husband Josh and Kelli Crawford, Kyle and Whitney Kriz and one great grandchild Kody Crawford.
Elnora Fern Mason
Services: 10:30 am on Saturday, January 27, 2001 at the Garwin Christian Church with Visitation from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday at the Overton Funeral Home in Garwin. Burial will be at the Garwin Cemetery.

Elnora Fern Mason was born March 19, 1922 on a farm east of Lincoln, Iowa, the daughter of Noble and Rose (Goette) Kahler. In the 1930’s her family moved from farm to farm and Elnora attended several country schools, including Traer, Geneseo, Toledo, and in 1940 she graduated from Garwin High School. On December 8th, 1941 Elnora was united in marriage to Dennis C. Mason in Lancaster, Missouri. They then made their home in Garwin where they owned and operated a grocery store for many years. Throughout their marriage Dennis and Elnora traveled often and were able to see every state in America with the exception of Alaska and Hawaii. In 1997 Elnora moved to Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer where her death came on Wednesday, January 24, 2001 at the age of 78 years. In free moments Elnora enjoyed making rag rugs for the Reinbeck and Grundy Center Nursing Homes. Elnora is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband Dennis of Garwin, a daughter Virginia (Mrs. Larry) Eckhart of Gladbrook, a brother Lawrence (Frances) Kahler of Garwin, two grandchildren, Jenny Eckhart and her fiancée Chad Winkler and Bonnie (Mrs. Phil) Franksain and three great grandchildren, Rachel, Rebecca and Laura Franksain.
Walter A. Matthiesen
Services: Visitation begins at 9:00 am, Saturday, July 7, 2001 at Overton Funeral Home in Dysart, IA. The funeral service will follow at 10:30 am also at the funeral home. Burial will then be at the Clutier Cemetery in Clutier, IA.

Walter A. Matthiesen was born August 7, 1918 on the family farm between Dysart and Clutier, Iowa, the son of William and Stella (Koutsha) Matthiesen. Walter received his education in country school and later Dysart High School when the family moved to town. Walter then worked in custodial work for the Dysart school system and also the Dysart United Methodist Church for many years. In 1983 Walter moved to Bethesda Care Center in Toledo where he lived until moving to the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center in 1996. Walter’s death came at the care center on Wednesday, July 4, 2001 at the age of 82 years. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Dysart. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, William and Frank, one niece Joan and one nephew James. He is survived by one brother and his wife, Joe and Orpha Matthiesen of Dysart, a sister in law, Imogen Matthiesen of Dysart and two nephews, Richard and Kenneth.
Frieda Bertha Mehlert
Services: 10:30 am on Saturday, February 24, 2001 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Dysart with burial at the Dysart Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Overton Funeral Home in Dysart from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday.

Frieda Bertha Mehlert was born September 1, 1911 at Ft. Dodge, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Lydia (Will) Weiss. Frieda was raised on a farm near Ft. Dodge and attended country school and St. Paul’s Lutheran School. On September 13, 1936 Frieda was united in marriage to Henry Mehlert at Vinton, Iowa. They made their home farming in the Keystone, Garrison and Dysart areas. Following Henry’s death on September 25, 1984 Frieda made her home in Dysart until more recently when she moved to the Keystone Care Center. Frieda’s death came at the care center on Wednesday, February 21, 2001 at the age of 89 years. Frieda was a member of the Dysart American Legion Auxiliary, Zion Lutheran Church and church circle. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Henry, three sisters; Florence, Esther & Margaret and a brother Victor. Frieda is survived by her children and their spouses; John & Garnet Mehlert of Dysart, Richard & Marilyn Mehlert of Oelwein, Marilyn & David Soden of Crystal Lake, IL, Donald & Jeanette Mehlert of Wichita, KS and Phyllis Wyatt of Ocala, Florida, 5 sisters; Tillie Mitchell, Vonnie Ault, Ruth Sperry & Rosemary Wiess all of Ft. Dodge and Gloria Larson of Badger, IA, 2 brothers; Harold Weiss of Lehigh, IA and Frank Weiss of Leavenworth, KS, 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

Elsie Katherine Mehlhouse was born on January 17, 1909 in Benton County, near Keystone, Iowa; the daughter of John and Ida (Schwalling) Peters. Elsie attended country school and then worked as a housekeeper for area families. On December 5, 1934, Elsie married Vernie Mehlhouse and they farmed for many years in the Dysart area. In 1963, they moved to make their home in Dysart. Elsie worked for Evergreen Hatchery, Mary Ellen Nursing Home and Sunnycrest Nursing Home in Dysart and later Café 218 in Vinton, baking all of their pies. Vernie passed away on June 18, 1988 and Elsie continued to live in their home. Because of failing health, Elsie later became a resident of Virginia Gay Annex in Vinton in December of 1994. It was there that her death came on Friday, July 13, 2001 at the age of 92 years, following an extended illness. Elsie was known for her ability to bake, especially yeast baking. All enjoyed her pies, rolls, and the family Sunday pizza nights at her home. She was a member of the Dysart United Methodist Church, the former Merry Makers Club, and the neighborhood area “Coffee Klatch”. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Vernie, a sister Minnie Havran and 2 brothers; John and Hugo Peters. Elsie is survived by her 2 daughters; Janice Lyons and husband Donald of Dysart & Karen Gessner and husband Gerald of Newhall, 7 grandsons, 8 great-grandchildren and a sister Laura Bender of Keystone.
Gordon "Gordy" Nass
Services: Services will be held at 10:30 am Friday, July 20, 2001 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Dysart with Pastor Sara Akre officating. Burial will follow at the Dysart Cemetery with Military Graveside rites by the Dysart American Legion. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 19, 2001 from 4-8 pm with a Voiture # 568 40/8 service at 8:00 PM.

Gordon C. Nass was born June 24, 1930 at Dysart, Iowa, the son of Theodore R. and Amanda S. (Yost) Nass. Gordy received his education at Dysart graduating from Dysart High School in 1949. He then entered the US Navy and served his country during the Korean Conflict aboard the USS Indiana and later the USS Magoffin. Following his discharge he returned to Dysart where he worked for Waller’s Phillips 66 Station, Walnut Dairy and Hansen and Leo Motors. On September 15, 1956 he married Lavonne Hass at Nashua, and they later divorced. In 1959 he began his employment with John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo, retiring in 1987. Following his retirement he began working with the Overton Funeral Home, where he was currently employed at the time of his death. Recently he was admitted to the Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo where he died on Monday, July 16, 2001 at the age of 71 years. In free moments Gordy enjoyed volunteering for the Dysart community and was an active member in the Dysart American Legion and Dysart Cemetery Board. He also was a former member of the Peace United Church of Christ and a founding member of the Dysart Historical Society. In addition he was a member of the American Legion 40/8 Voiture # 568 of Marshall and Tama Counties. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Wanda. He is survived by three children, Tim and Janice Nass of Bellevue, IA, Tom and Anne Nass of Waterloo and Lynette Nass of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; five grandchildren, Jared, Brent, Timmy, Andrew, and Gabbi; a special friend Mardean Hix of Dysart; three sisters, Virginia (Mrs. Clifford) Baker of Dysart, Theone (Mrs. Don) Miyagawa of Cascade, IA and Eleanor Obrosk of Dysart.
