Mabel F. Long
Mabel F. Long, 88, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Ely, died Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Memorial services were held Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Del Bear.
Born Aug. 12, 1923, in Cedar Rapids, Mabel was the daughter of Raymond and Inez (VanDee) Neal.
Survivors include her children, David (Karen) Long, Dianne (John) Markitan, Coralie (Paul) Osterkamp, Douglas (Margaret) Long, Sue (Jim) Snyder and Phyliss Long; 10 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, William (Evelyn) Neal and Norman Neal; brother-in-law, Willard Vokt; sister-in-law, Lucille Karr; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Corles; siblings, John Neal, Margaret Fisher, Madeline Bell and Clara Vokt; and one granddaughter, Barbara Budde.

David Packard
David George Packard, 66, of Cedar Rapids/Iowa City, died Friday, Sept. 2, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids.
Arrangements are with Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 29, at Linwood Cemetery.

David was a member of Calvin-Sinclair Presbyterian Church.
David was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Mary Packard and Diane Zukow, his partner, Van Stewart; and many friends and relatives.
Survivors include his beloved dog, Ginger; a sister, Debbie Thayer of Cedar Rapids; a nephew, Phil Zukow of Longview, Wash.; numerous cousins, including Charlene Flach of Clearwater, Fla., Jan (Duane) Hinrichs, Jackie (Chuck) Pollock, Sheryl Pazour and Sharon (Tim) Hangartner of Cedar Rapids, Mike (Lisa) Pazour and sons Michael and Derek, and Deb (Dell) Law of Solon, Doreen Cook and her children Tim and Elissa of Marion, and Martha Serbousek of Coggon; many dear friends, including James Dooley of San Diego, Calif., Susan Miller of Cedar Rapids and Mickey Miller of Mount Vernon; and David's second family, Mary and Charlie Schropp, their sons A.J. and Matthew of Oxford, and the entire Harney family.
David was born April 28, 1945, son of William and Libbie (Pazour) Packard in Cedar Rapids. After graduating from Cedar Rapids Washington High School, he earned a communications degree from the University of Iowa, as well as an English degree with physical education minor from Long Beach State College and held secondary teaching credentials from both Iowa and California.
David worked for Parsons Corporation in Pasadena, Calif., from 1976 to 1986. After returning to Iowa, he became deeply involved in HIV care, prevention and education, serving as executive director at Rapids AIDS Project 1992 to 2000, then in a similar role at Iowa Center for AIDS Resources and Education 2000 to 2003. In 2004, he trained to be a nurse's aide and provided care to terminally ill patients at Iowa City Hospice 2005 to 2010. He volunteered with numerous health-related organizations as well as Legion Arts/CSPS. Throughout his life, David worked tirelessly for gay rights.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial celebration of David's life at CSPS, 1103 Third St. SE, Cedar Rapids, at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29.
Dianne Carter
M. Dianne Carter, 70, of New London, died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at her home after a courageous battle with breast cancer.
She was born Dec. 12, 1940, in Burlington, the daughter of Russel "Butch" and Dorothy Wasson Warth. On Nov. 22, 1959, she married William (Bill) Carter at the Presbyterian Church in New London. She was a New London High School and an American Institute of Business graduate. She was a member of the New London Presbyterian Church.
Dianne is survived locally by a son, Gary (Darla) Carter of Solon.
Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 9, at Elliott Chapel, New London. Pastor Rod Cooper officiated. Her body has been cremated and interment of her cremains was at Trinity Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Dollars For Scholars.
Dale Gates
Dale M. Gates, 83, of New Hampton, died Friday morning, Sept. 2, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Sept. 7, at Holy Family Parish - St. Joseph Center, New Hampton. Interment was at St. Mary's Cemetery, New Hampton.
He is survived locally by a daughter, Sue Gates of North Liberty.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elaine; and one brother, Keith Gates.
Wilma Elaine Heidtke
Wilma Elaine Heidtke, 87, of Austin, Minn., died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011 at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City. Funeral Services were held Monday, Sept. 12, at First United Methodist Church in Austin, Minn. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery.
Wilma was born Feb. 19, 1924, to Otto and Lottie (Bly) Heidtke. She married Erwin Lawrence Gill on June 6, 1944, in Spring Valley, Minn. They moved to Austin and Wilma worked at Hormel for a few years before giving birth to her two children. After the birth of her kids, Wilma stayed home to raise them. Once the kids were raised Wilma went back to work for the Austin Community School district as a cook.
Wilma loved to give to others, bake, crochet, make kitchen towels, washcloths and most of all she loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and close friends. Since April of this year, Wilma lived with her daughter in Solon and then in July she moved to Emerson Point in Iowa City.
She is survived by a son; Phillip (Linda) and their daughter Emily Gill, a daughter; Debra (Paul) Miller and their children Valerie (Greg) Michek, Katie (David) Falco, Natalie Miller, Nathan Miller and Austin Miller. Great grandchildren; Ashton, Nolan and Jaycee Michek, Dominic and Jillian Falco, and a special friend Rita Heyer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother George Heidtke, a sister Doris Renslow and special friend Martin Heyer.
Joyce Huedepohl
Joyce Ann Huedepohl died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011, at Mercy Iowa City following a sudden illness at the age of 78 years. Celebration of Life service was held Sept. 6, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy. Pastor Gary Sears officiated. Burial was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.
Joyce was born Aug. 27, 1933, near Conroy, the daughter of Allan C. and Anna R. (Furler) Stanerson. She graduated from Hilton Consolidated School in Conroy. On July 16, 1952, she married Wilbert Arthur Huedepohl at Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy. She worked at the Conroy ASA office, Burg Insurance, and as a hostess at Colony Haus and waitress and hostess at Ox Yoke Inn.
Joyce is survived locally by a son, Phillip (Misti) of Swisher.
A memorial fund has been established for Trinity Lutheran Church or the Lutheran Interparish School.
Charles Mick
Charles Robert "Bob" Mick, 69, of Palo, died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, following a brief illness. Funeral Mass was held Sept. 9, at St. Jude's Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Jon Seda. Burial was at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Local survivors include his son Patrick (Carrie) Mick, Ely.
Born Aug. 30, 1942, in Aurora, Ill., Bob was the son of J. Edward and Lucille (Freed) Mick. He lived in Downers Grove, Ill., moved to Ottumwa, and then to Cedar Rapids in 1952. Bob graduated from Washington High School in 1960. He was a member of the Cedar Rapids Cadets Drum & Bugle Corps. Bob served in the U.S. Army for three years as a radar operator- air defense missiles for two years in Schweinfurt, Germany. On Sept. 4, 1965, he was united in marriage to Judith Marron in Waucoma, Iowa. He was a shift supervisor, operations supervisor and senior outage project manager at Duane Arnold Energy Center, retiring in June 1998.

Rosetta Sylvia Cerny Seery
Rosetta Sylvia Cerny Seery, 90, of Cedar Rapids, died at her home of cancer Friday, Sept. 9, 2011. Services were held Tuesday, Sept. 13, at St. Jude Catholic Church by the Rev. Mark Reasoner with military services by the American Legion Post 727. Burial was at St. Mary's Cemetery, Solon.
Rosetta is survived by her daughter, Kay and Forrest (Chip) Moyer of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Jessica, Abby, and Jake Osborne, and Zach and Mikayla Moyer; two great grandchildren Aiden and Marcus Osborne; a sister-in-law Lois Seery of Galesburg, Ill.; nieces Eileen Rogers and Mary Louise Jenson; nephews William (BJ) Leonard and John Morris; and many great nieces and nephews.
Rosetta was preceded in death by her husband Waldo in 1986 and two sisters Mary Morris and Lavona Leonard.
Rosetta was born on Dec. 31, 1920, in Cedar County, the daughter of Joseph and Matilda (Miller) Cerny. Following her graduation from high school in 1938, she attended University of Northern Iowa. She served in the Navy during WWII as a Specialist G and was an instructor at the naval station in Memphis, Tenn. After her naval service, she graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and a Masters of Science in nutrition. She taught in schools in Cedar, Linn and Johnson counties. Rosetta was the head dietitian at St. Luke's Hospital for seven years prior to her employment at Mercy Hospital where she worked for one year. She married Waldo Seery on Nov. 25, 1961, in Cedar Rapids. She had made her home in Solon prior to moving to Cedar Rapids in 1950. Rosetta was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughter of America, CRST Association for substitute teachers, St. Martha Circle, and the St. Mark Church and Witwer Senior Center.
Rosetta enjoyed trivia, conquering puzzles, and all sports especially the Hawkeyes. She was a huge Cubs fan.
