Donald Eash
Donald E. Eash died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010, at Parkview Manor in Wellman at the age of 82 years. Celebration of Life services were held Oct. 9, at West Union Mennonite Church, rural Parnell. Pastor Martha Yoder and Pastor Ray Reimer officiated. Burial was in the West Union Cemetery.
Don was born Aug. 22, 1928, near Wellman, the son of Wallace and Laura (Doolin) Eash. He graduated from the Hesston Academy. At age 17 he worked as a seafaring cowboy. On Sept. 9, 1951, he was united in marriage to Fern Swartzendruber at the West Union Mennonite Church. They lived and farmed in rural Parnell for 28 years, retiring in 1980. Don was a lifetime member of the West Union Mennonite Church, where he served as trustee and Sunday school teacher. He was an Iowa County Soil Commissioner for 10 years. He was a member of Farm Bureau. He loved his grandchildren, woodworking, fishing, hunting, camping and being outdoors.
Don is survived by his wife, Fern of Wellman; three children, Michael Eash and wife Marie of Arcadia, Calif., Merridy Leichty and husband Allen of Wellman and Martin Eash of North Liberty; five grandchildren, Dominique Eash of Sierra Madre, Calif., Dawn Eash of Santa Monica, Calif., Lauren Eash of Arcadia, Calif., William Leichty and wife Kate of Goshen, Ind., and Christina Leichty of Iowa City; a sister, Carley June Brubaker of Williamsburg, Va.; and a brother, Arthur Eash of Naples, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Robert Eash and infant Russell Dean Eash.
A memorial fund has been established for West Union Mennonite Church.
Berniece Young
Berniece A. Young, 90, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. Services will be Saturday, Sept. 17, 3 p.m., at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, by the Rev. Paul Minx. Burial will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, Sept. 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
She is survived locally by her son, Richard and Audrey Young of Swisher.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
Robert Christensen
Robert Lee Christensen, 74, of Dike, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls.
He was born July 28, 1937, in Cedar Falls, the son of Ejnar and Helen (Fisher) Christensen. He graduated from Dike High School in 1955. On June 19, 1959, he was united in marriage to Margaret A. "Maggie" Allspach at the Reformed Church of Stout in Stout, Iowa.
Robert worked for Dike Hardware Plumbing and Heating from 1960-1968 and owned and operated Dike Pump Service from 1968 until his retirement in 2001.
Robert was a lifelong member of Fredsville Lutheran Church where he served on the church's Cemetery Board from 1987 to 2009.
He was a member of the Danish Brotherhood, UNI Scholarship Club, and was past member of the Dike Lions Club.
Robert is survived by his wife, Maggie of Dike; a son, Kirk R. (Diane) of Carroll, Iowa; two daughters, Keri A. (Ron) Hanus of Solon, and Kris M. (Dave) Peters of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren: Kyle, Jace and Brad Christensen of Carroll, Jared and Lee Hanus of Solon; one brother, Charles (Jane) Christensen of Dike; and a sister, Shirley (Gary) Harris of Cedar Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Ellen Christensen.
Services were held Aug. 20 at Fredsville Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. Pastor Lisa Dietrich officiated.
John F. Haman Jr.
John F. Haman Jr., 73, of North Liberty, died unexpectedly at his home Aug. 31, 2011.
John's wishes were to be cremated. Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, Sept. 2, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Reverend Michael Phillips officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association, The Czech-Slovak Museum or The Regina Foundation.
John was born July 9, 1938, in Iowa City, the son of John F. Haman Sr. and Margaret Mount. Growing up in Iowa City, he graduated from St. Mary's High School. He received his doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Iowa. John worked as a chemical engineer in Texas, Ohio and Michigan for numerous companies, including Ford Motor Co., Sovonics Solar Systems (a partnership of Standard Oil Company), Jacobsen Engineering and Cunningham Engineers Inc.
He was a long time member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City and recently had been attending St. Mary's Catholic Church in Solon. John was a steam and diesel railroad enthusiast. He enjoyed collecting stamps, coins and postcards and sharing these interests with family. John was an avid Detroit Tigers fan as well as the Iowa Hawkeyes.
He is survived by his sisters, Irene Eimen (Cliff) of Tiffin and Jane Knopick (Jim) of Iowa City, nieces, Mary Zimmerman of Coralville, Katy (Mark) Reiling of Cedar Rapids, Jennifer (Mark) Montgomery of Iowa City, nephew, John (Joni) Knopick of Central City, great nieces and nephews, Jacob, Jake, Hailey, Hunter, Cindy and Adam.
John was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother James.
Theresa Heumphreus
Theresa J. Heumphreus, 74, of Hiawatha, died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Visitation was held Aug. 31. Graveside services will be private at Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Theresa Heumphreus Memorial Fund.
Theresa was born Oct. 24, 1936, in Toledo, Ohio, the daughter of Charles A. (Sr.) and Mary A. Forman. Moving to the Iowa City/Coralville area as a young girl, Theresa attended Iowa City High School and worked as a training supervisor for more than 15 years at ACT in Iowa City, retiring in 1998.
Local survivors include her sister, Rita Orr of Solon.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two grandchildren.
Christine Humphries
Christine Louise Humphries, 56, of Solon, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011, at her home. Funeral services were held Sept. 4 at the Coralville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Doug Williams officiating. Private graveside services will be held at a later date.

Norma Kean
Norma Jean (Steffen) Kean, 70, of Cascade, passed away peacefully Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, surrounded by family at Shady Rest Care Center in Cascade.
Services were held Aug. 30 at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cascade, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Cascade.
Norma was born Feb. 26, 1941, in Cascade, daughter of Sylvester and Marie (Lehman) Steffen. Norma attended St. Mary's Catholic School.
She married Dale (Louie) Kean on April 11, 1959, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Cascade. Norma worked at various area restaurants before retiring after 28 years from Western Dubuque Community Schools as manager of food services for Cascade High School.
Those left to honor her memory locally are son Jeff (Vicki) Kean of North Liberty; and grandchildren, Nick Kean, Mariah Reighard, McKenna Reighard and Ryan Reighard, all of North Liberty.
In lieu of flowers, Norma's wishes are that memorials be given to Hospice of Dubuque or Camp Courageous.
Therese Spaight
Therese Spaight, 93, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2011, at the Hiawatha Care Center. Funeral Mass was held Aug. 29 at All Saints Catholic Church, with the Rev. David O'Connor officiating. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Local survivors include daughter Karen (Dan) Wright of Swisher; and grandchildren Megan Wright and Danielle Wright.
Therese G. Spaight was born July 16, 1918, in Cedar Rapids, to Frank and Mary (Biskup) Zobl. She married Joseph Spaight on June 12, 1939, at St. Patrick's Church in Cedar Rapids. She was a dedicated homemaker, mother and a longtime member of All Saints Catholic Church. A memorial fund has been established in her name.
