Elsie Carter
Elsie "Darlene" Carter, 82, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. A funeral service celebrating her life was held Aug. 29, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories.
Local survivors include her brother, Edward (Barb) Vosmek of Ely.
She was preceded in death by her parents and first husband, Howard Scott.
Elsie Darlene Vosmek was born March 6, 1929, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Louis and Elsie (Henderson) Vosmek. She married John Carter on July 15, 1955, in Iowa City. Elsie worked as a bookkeeper in retail before she retired.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.
Mary Beckwith Foster
Mary Beckwith Foster, 72, of North Liberty and formerly of Spencer, passed away at her home on Aug. 19, 2011.
Graveside services were held Friday, Aug. 26, at 1:30 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer. Visitations were held between 12:30-1:15, August 26 at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.

Mary was born Aug. 11, 1939, in Sioux City, the daughter of Paul and Helen Beckwith. Her parents and two brothers preceded her in death.
She is survived by her daughter, Julie Claus of Coralville; her son, Audie Foster and his wife, Pam of Bettendorf; her sister Paulette Loving and her husband, Lael of Albert City; and her grandchildren, Sam, Grant, Elise, and Caden.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be dedicated to The Foster Grandparent Reading Program at Penn Elementary School. Mary was a child care provider for over 20 years. Kids were the light of her life, especially her grandchildren.
Jessie Hargrove
Jessie Hargrove, 67, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, at St. Luke's Hospital following a brief illness. Services were held Aug. 27 at Gospel Tabernacle Church, Cedar Rapids, by Pastor Mary Beets and Pastor Tim Pridegon. Burial was at Linwood Cemetery.
Jessie was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Local survivors include a son, Anthony Hargrove and wife Jodie of North Liberty.
Born Aug. 29, 1943, in Panola, Ala., Jessie was the daughter of Melvin and Maehalie (Jones) Little. On Oct 27, 1961, she was united in marriage to Willie B. Hargrove. He died Dec. 3, 2002. Before living in Cedar Rapids, Jessie resided in Saginaw, Mich. She was a homemaker, a Mary Kay representative and a day care provider.
Alton Johnson
Alton C. "AC" Johnson, 92, lifetime resident of the Iowa City area, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at Mercy Iowa City.
A gathering of family and friends was held Aug. 23 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Alton's memory.
Alton Clay Johnson was born Nov. 30, 1918, in rural Johnson County, the son of Clay and Neva (Zager) Johnson.
He married Betty Jean Yeslinek on Nov. 8, 1960, in Kahoka, Mo.
For many years, Alton worked for the University of Iowa as a mechanic, specifically with the ambulances.
His local family includes daughter Janet Norris (Jeremy) of North Liberty and her children, Emma Norris, Jacob Norris and Owen Norris.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty Jean on Nov. 17, 1979; and a child in infancy.

Alton Johnson
Alton C. "AC" Johnson, 92, lifetime resident of the Iowa City area, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at Mercy Iowa City.
He was cremated at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City.
AC Johnson was born Nov. 30, 1918, in rural Johnson County, the son of Clay and Neva (Zager) Johnson.
He was married to Betty Jean Yeslinek on Nov. 8, 1960, until her death in 1979.
He married Karen Marie Graef on July 7, 1986, in Iowa City.
For many years, Alton worked his parents' farm.
He worked over 25 years at the Ford Company as a mechanic; he was the first Johnson County mechanic to be trained to work on automatic-transmission cars.
He worked for the University of Iowa as a mechanic and was supervisor of the ambulance department.
His local family included daughter Janet Norris, North Liberty.

Bessie Konecny
Bessie B. Konecny, 92, of Ely, died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011. Service was held Aug. 24 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Burial followed in Rogers Grove Cemetery, near Ely.
Bessie was born March 27, 1919, the daughter of Joe and Anna (Kubichek) Binko in Ely. She married Charles Frank Konecny on Dec. 16, 1953. Bessie and Charlie farmed in the Ely area all their lives. She enjoyed time spent farming, taking care of her flowers and garden as well as cooking.
Bessie is survived by her daughter, Patty Konecny of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her brother, Louis (Irma) Binko; and sisters, Emily (Mervin) Lucas and Elma (John) Hartl.

Marcella Sovers
Marcella A. Sovers, 89 of Solon, died Monday, Aug. 22, 2011 at the Solon Nursing Care Center. Funeral Mass was held Thursday, Aug. 25, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon. Burial followed in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa City.
Marcella was born Nov. 16, 1921, in Oxford, the daughter of Frank J. and Margaret (Kloos) Tomas. She married Ralph Sovers on June 24, 1941, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Iowa City. She and her husband farmed for many years south of Solon. She was a member of the Solon American Legion Auxiliary and worked at the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge in Iowa City. She enjoyed cooking, dancing, polka music and caring for her pets. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends.
Marcella is survived by her grandsons, John (Susan) Sovers of Muscatine, Mark Sovers of Solon and Daniel (Michele) Sovers of Iowa City; granddaughter, Tricia (Sean) Lokmer of Cedar Rapids; and great-grandchildren, Michael, Matthew Sovers and Patricia Lokmer; a sister Gladys (Jim) Christensen; sister-in-law, Ruth Tomas; brother-in-law, Ray Williams and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, her son and daughter-in-law, Wes and Pat Sovers; siblings Adeline Williams, Frank Tomas and Chuck Tomas.
