Herman McCain
Herman “Dannie” McCain, 86, of Cedar Rapids, died March 12, 2013 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, March 15, 2013 at the First Church of Open Bible in Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends, prior to service, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM on Friday at the church. Burial will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Herman “Dannie” is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Doris McCain of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Lana Davis of Cedar Rapids; Karen (Gary) Ferguson of Milton, WI; son Dannie McCain of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Troy and Kenny Davis, Jeff Ferguson, Candi Mehlberger, Christopher and Ryan McCain; 11 great grandchildren; and his special dog Missy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Robert, Kenneth, and Carl McCain.
Dannie McCain was born on February 25, 1927, the son of Chester and Lora (Ramsey) McCain in Marion, Illinois. Dannie enlisted in the United States Army, and proudly served his country from 1945 to 1946. On November 26, 1948, he was united in marriage to Doris Kidder in Cedar Rapids. Dannie and Doris made their home in Cedar Rapids, where they raised three children. Dannie worked as a Foreman for 37 ˝ years for Universal Engineering. He and Doris volunteered for 15 years for the Olivet Center. Dannie was a life long member of the First Church of Open Bible. Dannie was a wonderful, kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be dearly missed, remembered and honored by everyone who knew him.
The family would like to thank the staff at Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy for the care they provided to Dannie.

Lloyd O. McDole
Lloyd O. McDole, 82, of Marion, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids.
Per his wishes, he has been cremated. Services will be later in the year. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda: Children, Martin (Jo) McDole of Marion and Lynne (Brian Fahrner) of Cedar Rapids;; Siblings, Janice Long of Osceola, IA, Dorothy Hallam of Moline, Il., Gayland (Doris) McDole of New Virginia, IA and 47 nieces and nephews and 66 great-nieces and nephews.
"He was preceeded in death by his parents, Two sisters (Florence (Al) Kortje, Jane (Cliff) Carter, and Six brothers: Bob (Winnifred) McDole, Lyle (Flora) McDole, Jack (Barbara) McDole, Ed (Delma) McDole, Merlin (Letty) McDole, and Darrell (Judy) McDole and 3 nephews.
Lloyd Oakley McDole was born August 31, 1930, in New Virginia, Iowa, the son of Edward and Estella (O’Connell) McDole. Lloyd served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and also the nascent Drake University Air Force ROTC, where he finished his education in 1959. On October 31, 1964, he married Brenda Jean Lord in Des Moines, Iowa. For 24 years, he taught junior high and high school grammar, composition, literature, speech and drama at West Des Moines, Eldora, Urbana and Center Point. He retired from teaching in May of 1990. That September, he hired on with Midland Security, working as a security guard at Aegon, and stayed until February 2011. He was an avid gardener, growing flowers, fruits and vegetables, which he supplied to Meals on Wheels. He was a lifetime member of the Hawkeye Area Grand Gaelic Isles Society.
Memorials may be given to the donor’s charity of choice.
Stanley (Stan) C. Petersen
Stanley (Stan) C. Petersen, 69 of Cedar Rapids, passed into the loving arms of God after a year-long battle with brain cancer on Sunday, March 10th.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 12th at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church from 4:00-8:00 pm with public Masonic Rites at 7:00 pm. Funeral Services will be Wednesday, March 13th at 1:30 pm at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harlan Gillespie officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Stan was born on February 15, 1944 in Sioux City, Iowa the son of Hans and Gertrude Petersen. He graduated from Hinton High School in 1962. He met Sharleen (Shar) K. Newberg in sixth grade when his one room schoolhouse closed and came to Hinton. They married on June 20, 1964.
He graduated from the University of South Dakota with a Business Degree. He moved to Cedar Rapids in 1966 and started his employment with FMC (Link Belt Speeder) for 8 years. Stan retired from Schneider Electric (Square D Company) after 29 years of service.
Stan was a member of El Kahir Shrine and served as Potentate in 2003. He was a member of the Color Guard, Hospital Dads and Crescent Lodge #25. He enjoyed attending as many of his grandchildren’s activities as he could. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist church and volunteered on many committees. He loved traveling, leaving Iowa in January and the many fishing trips to Canada with the guys.
Those left to cherish Stan’s memory are his wife of almost 49 years, his two daughters Pamela K. Bays (Joe) of Smithville, MO, Denise R. Mitchell (Andy Helle) of Cedar Rapids, and son Bradley D. Petersen (Stacey Harmsen) of Robins; grandchildren, Morgan and Rylee Mitchell and Lauren and Matthew Bays. His sister, Hope K. Wilhelm (Rex) of Stuart, IA, many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials may be directed in Stan’s name to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 3rd Avenue S.E., El Kahir Shrine Transportation Fund, 1200 Blairs Ferry Road N.E., St. Luke’s Hospice, 1026 A Ave NE or to his family for his grandchildren’s education fund.
The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the St. Luke’s and Mercy Hospice staff for their compassion and care through the last months.
Stan was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend and will be missed dearly by those closest to him. We will think of him often and especially when we visit Dairy Queen for a blizzard (Stan’s favorite treat).
Olive B. Dean
Olive B. Dean, 84, of Manchester formerly of Hiawatha died Tuesday March 5, 2013 at her home after a long illness. Services at 11:00 AM on Friday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories where friends may call after 10:00 AM on Friday. Entombment at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy McShane of Central City, Dixie (Randy) Franks of Manchester and one brother Orville Nigh of Kansas City, Missouri. Olive is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother Jimmy Nigh.
Olive was born on August 1, 1928 in Modena, Missouri the daughter of Floyd and Ruby Hamilton Nigh. She married Billy B. Dean on December 17, 1949 in Trenton, Missouri. Billy passed away in 1991.
Olive worked at Rockwell-Collins for over 22 years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of Eastern Star. Olive enjoyed line dancing, quilting, gardening and especially the time she spent with her beloved family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A memorial fund has been established.
Hollis W. Duecker
Hollis W. Duecker, 89, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday March 23, 2013 in St. Luke’s Hospital. Memorial Services: 2 p.m. Thursday at the South Marion United Methodist Church, Stratford, Iowa by the Rev. Gina Sponheimer. Private inurnment: South Marion Cemetery, Stratford, Iowa. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia C. Duecker, his children; Lynn E. (Cynthia) Duecker of Piedmont, California, Ann M. (Richard) Lemm of Kelley, Iowa, and Karl E. (Gwen) Duecker of Monticello, Iowa, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Hollis was born January 23, 1924 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of August and Ruth Wentworth Duecker. He married Virginia C. Crim on August 7, 1949 in Stratford, Iowa. Hollis was employed by General Motors as an Insurance Adjuster. He served in the Army during World War II. He enjoyed golf, art work, history and traveling.

Patricia Collette Hamlett
Patricia Collette Hamlett. 85, of Anamosa formerly of Hiawatha died Friday March 22, 2013 at St. Lukes Hospital. Private family services will be held at a later date.
Survivors include two daughters Shelley (Stuart) Adams and Stacey ( Randall McElveny) Farley; a sister Dona Hoot; grandchildren., Jason (Jane) Adams, Christopher (Lauren) Farley and Jennifer (Kent) Werlin; great grandchildren Jack and Sylvia Farley; nieces Molly and Amber Hoot and beloved extended family members. Beside her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a brother Dr. Terrence E. Hoot, sister M. Joyce Pigott, nephew Dirk Kelly and a niece Erin Eckenrode.
Patricia was born on June 22, 1927 in Colesburg to Dr. William Earl and Anna Hazel (Strong) Hoot and in 1944 she graduated from Colesburg High School. She served in the Civilian Army Corps during WWII, stationed in Dayton, Ohio.
On October 24, 1945 Patricia married Gordon E. Hamlett. The couple lived for many years in Hiawatha. Gordon died on July 16, 1979. Patricia worked for Rockwell International for 38 years prior to her retirement.
Charles F. Ormiston
Charles F. Ormiston, 61, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday March 20, 2012. Memorial services: 11:00 a.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, where visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Burial: Private at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include his mother, Mildred K. Ormiston of Cedar Rapids, three brothers; Ken D. Ormiston of Vinton, Dean R. (Hope) Ormiston, Maynard C. Ormiston, and a sister; Carol K. Ormiston all of Cedar Rapids and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Francis C. Ormiston.
Charles was born January 31, 1952 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Francis and Mildred Pexa Ormiston. Charles retired from Whirlpool in Amana after 34 years of service. He served in the Navy during Viet Nam. Charles had a cabin on the Wapsipinicon River. He loved fishing, boating, riding motorcycles and country westerns. Charles also enjoyed spending time with his family. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Allen James Balvin
Allen James Balvin, 84, of Cedar Rapids, passed away at Northbrook Care Center on Sunday, March 17, 2013. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by the Rev. Carroll Brown. Entombment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors by the Iowa National Guard. A visitation will be held Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 6 p.m.
Allen was born September 8, 1928 in Tama County. He was the son of Louis and Emma Balvin. Allen graduated from Chelsea High School, served in the Korean Conflict and was awarded a Purple Heart. He married Josephine Eden in Cedar Rapids on October 28, 1958. They were blessed with four children, James, Laura, Terry, and Christy. Allen worked at Quaker Oats for 32 years. He enjoyed square dancing and going to Armar, biking trips and going to Nashville to see the “Grand Ole Opry.” Allen enjoyed visiting friends and attending family get-togethers and having coffee and conversation with friends at Donutland. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He liked the company of the family cats, Snickers, Milo, Sylvester, Smokey, and Patches.
Allen is survived by his wife of 55 years, Josephine; children, James (Rose) Balvin of Cedar Rapids, Laura (Matt) Miller of Princeton, MN, Terry (Jennifer) Balvin of Lakeland, FL, and Christy Balvin of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Brittany, Zachary (Jena), Jake, Riley and Scott; two great grandchildren, Max and Lucy; brother, Leonard (Florence) Balvin of Chelsea; and two sisters, Wilma Malina of Chelsea, and Evelyn Zmolek of Tama. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Emma, a sister-in-law, Velma Eden; and brothers-in-law, Calvin Eden, Eddie Kiracofe, Robert Soukup, James Malina, and Jerry Zmolek.
Memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous or the Cedar Valley Humane Society.
