Services: Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 19, 2001 at the Dysart United Methodist Church with Rev. Donald Bogue officating. Burial will follow at the Dysart Cemetery in Dysart. Visitation will be held from 1-5 on Sunday at the Overton Funeral Home in Dysart.

Jean Esther Nelson was born May 27, 1945 at Vinton, IA, the daughter of Russell and Esther (Handorf) Nelson. She attended school at Dysart, IA graduating in the Class of 1963. Jean then continued her education at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. She then worked as a secretary in Cedar Rapids and Dysart. She also worked in area restaurants and as a retail sales clerk. Jean spent free moments visiting friends and took a special interest other people’s lives and enjoyed sending cards and gifts to those she cared about, especially her great niece and nephews. She loved working with fresh flowers and always enjoyed having fresh flowers in her home. In recent months Jean’s health had failed which kept her home more frequently. Her death came suddenly at the home of her parents on Friday, November 16, 2001 at the age of 56 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Dysart. Jean is survived by her parents, Russell & Esther of Dysart, IA, a brother and his wife, Larry & Adrienne Nelson also of Dysart, IA, a nephew and his wife, Brett & Robin Nelson and their children Jared & Jacob and a niece and her husband, Melanie & Patrick Franke and their children Tyler & Alexa.
Lew Olson
Services: Visitation is to be held on Wednesday, May 2, 2001 from 4-8pm at Overton Funeral Home in Dysart. The funeral will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2001 at 10:30am at the United Methodist Church in Dysart. Burial is at the Dysart Cemetery followed by a luncheon at the Dysart American Legion Hall.

Lewis Bernard Olson was born September 11, 1932 at Prole, Iowa, the son of Harold and Leta (Burrus) Olson. Lew received his education at Martensdale, IA, graduating in the Class of 1950. He then worked for Easters Store in Des Moines before entering the U.S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge in 1954, Lewis was united in marriage to Irene Palmer on March 1, 1955 at Clinton, IA. They then lived in Van Meter, IA where Lew was a manager of an Easters Store. He later was a superintendent of Determann Blacktop Inc. in Camanche, IA. In 1975 they moved to Dysart where Lewis owned and operated Moonliner & Co. Truck Line. On Monday, April 30, 2001 Lewis became ill at his home and his death came at the age of 68 years. In free moments he enjoyed spending time with family and friends as well as playing cards and driving around town. He was a Hawkeye fan, enjoyed baseball and coached women’s softball. Lewis is past Commander of the Dysart American Legion, a former member of the Dysart Ambulance, a member of the Masonic Lodge and Consistory. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother Gary. Lewis is survived by his wife Irene, two daughters: Wanda (Mrs. David) Petersen of Dysart, IA and Sue Pippin of Omaha, NE, a brother, Robert Olson of Fresno, CA, and five grandchildren: Cale, Reece & Paige Petersen and Jackie & Kenny Pippin.
Anna Mae Palmer
Services: Friday, February 16, 2001, 10:30 at the Dysart United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Dysart Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday at the Overton Funeral Home in Dysart.

Anna Mae Palmer was born on June 17, 1920, on a farm near Dysart, Iowa; the daughter of Dirk and Anna (Wieben) Siemens. She received her education in Dysart, graduating from Dysart High School in the Class of 1937. On September 28, 1940, Anna Mae was united in marriage to Marvin Palmer at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Anna Mae worked for a time at the pharmacy in Dysart, operated by Bert Barkdoll. Anna Mae and Marvin have made their home farming south of Dysart since 1943. In January of 1994, Anna Mae became a resident of Sunnycrest Nursing Home in Dysart where her death came on Tuesday, February 13, 2001 at the age of 80 years. Her pride and joy were her grandkids and her flowers. Anna Mae had a very special talent in music. At a young age she taught herself to play the piano by ear and could listen to a song and play it. She played and sang with different groups through the years and taught lessons to many for over 20 years. Anna Mae was a member of the Dysart United Methodist Church and 50-year member of the O.E.S, serving as Worthy Matron and lodge organist. She was preceded in death by her parents, 4 brothers; Leonard, Harlan, Curtis and Dale Siemens and a sister Iola in infancy. Anna Mae is survived by her husband of 60 years, Marvin, 2 sons and their wives; Dick and Jo Palmer of Dysart and Dr. Rick and Joan Palmer of La Porte City, 7 grandchildren; Kirk, Kendall and Kyle Palmer, Kristi Halverson, Aaron and Jonathon Palmer and Jennifer Rios, 6 great grandchildren; Karly, Keagan, Kory and Jayce Palmer, Kylee Halverson and Jacob Rios, and a sister; Arlene Oster of Lowden, Iowa.
Eldo L. Rieck
Services: Visitation is on Tuesday, October 23, 2001 from 4-7pm at Overton Family Funeral Home in Dysart. Private family services will be on Wednesday, October 24, 2001. Burial is at the Dysart Cemetery in Dysart.

Eldo L. Rieck was born April 26, 1912 at Luzerne, Iowa, the son of John and Bertha (Backes) Rieck. Eldo received his education at Luzerne where he attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School. Eldo then began farming and on December 4, 1937 was united in marriage to Esther Webert. Esther and Eldo then made their home farming all their married life in the Blairstown, Belle Plaine and Dysart areas. In 1970 they moved to Dysart but Eldo remained active helping area farmers, working for Carr Tiling and helping Ken Paulsen with his grave digging. He also enjoyed helping his son Marlyn in his salvage business east of Dysart. Eldo was preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife Esther, three sons, Robert Rieck and his wife Judy of Waterloo, Marlyn Rieck of Dysart and Ronald Rieck and his wife Nancy of Center Point, one brother Herman Rieck of Belle Plaine and one sister Selma Witt of Keystone, 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Carl E. Santman

Carl Elwood Santman was born July 18, 1909 at Dysart, Iowa, the son of Charles and Louise (Messer) Santman. He received his education in country school and at Dysart Consolidated High School. Carl then began farming with his family on the Santman farm north of Dysart. On February 11, 1932 Carl was united in marriage to Pearl Wurtzel at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. They made their home farming on the family farm where Carl raised Holstein cattle on his dairy farm. He was well known for his skills as a dairy breeder and always enjoyed sharing those skills with others. At one time one of his cows held the record in total milk production in Iowa. In 1958 Carl and Pearl moved to Dysart and Carl remained active on the farm. It has only been recently that Carl no longer went to the farm but he would make nursing home visits to see Pearl. Carl was at his home on Sunday, December 3, 2000 when he suddenly became ill and his death came there at the age of 91 years. Carl was a member of the United Methodist Church and of the Holstein Friesian Association of America. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Maxine, a son Larry and brother Elmer and a sister Florence. Carl is survived by his wife Pearl of Dysart, a son Roger and his wife Kae Santman of Dysart, a sister Lucille Underwood of Dysart, 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Pearl E. Santman
Services: Visitation is on Thurs., July 26, 2001 at the Overton Funeral Home in Dysart, IA from 4-7 pm. The funeral service is on Friday, July 27, 2001 at 10:30 am at the United Methodist Church in Dysart. Burial is at Dysart Cemetery, followed by a lunch at the church fellowship hall.

Pearl E. Santman was born June 10, 1911 at Dysart, Iowa, the daughter of John and Christina (Zobel) Wurtzel. Pearl received her education at Dysart, graduating from Dysart High School in the Class of 1929. She then worked for area families until her marriage to Carl Santman on February 11, 1931 at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. Carl and Pearl then made their home on the family farm north Dysart until moving to town in 1959. In 1997 due to failing health she became a resident of the Sunnycrest Care Center in Dysart. This week Pearl became a patient at the Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton where her death came following surgery on Tuesday, July 24, 2001 at the age of 90 years. In addition to raising her family Pearl enjoyed crocheting and other handwork with her daughter Maxine. Pearl was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter Maxine, one son Larry, husband Carl on December 3, 2000, two sisters and one brother. She is survived by one son and his wife, Roger and Kae Santman of Dysart, one daughter in law, Peggy Santman of Dysart, 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Christian G. (Dutch) Schmidt
Services: Memorial Services will be on Friday, April 27, 2001 at 11:00 am at Zion Lutheran Church, Dysart, Iowa. Burial will be in Dysart Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Christian G. (Dutch) Schmidt was born on May 9, 1911 in Dysart, Iowa; the son of Walter and Alma (Blexrud) Schmidt. After completing his education in Dysart, he continued his education at the University of Iowa, receiving a Bachelors Degree in Commerce and Law in 1934. From 1942 –1945, Dutch served in the United States Navy, coming out as Lieutenant Commander. He was an outstanding athlete at Iowa, earning 9 letters in four varsity sports. In 1940, he joined American Hospital Supply Corporation, now Baxter, in Evanston, Illinois and was with the company for 37 years, until his retirement in 1976. Dutch married Julia on April 3, 1971 in Wilmette, IL. After retirement, Dutch and his wife Julia split their time between homes in Wilmette, Illinois, Newport Beach, California and Marco Island, Florida. They moved permanently to Florida in 1999, where Dutch passed away at his home on December 15, 2000, at the age of 89 years. Dutch was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and loved sailing his sailboat. He is survived by his wife Julia of Marco Island, FL, his two sons; Christian G. Schmidt, Jr., and Charles W. Schmidt both of Stuart, FL, and a granddaughter Kristen Ann Schmidt of Vero Beach, FL. Memorials may be directed to the University of Iowa, Levitt Center for University Advancement, P.O. Ada Carrie Schnell
Services: Will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001 at the Dysart United Methodist Church at 10:30 AM. Lunch will immediately follow the funeral. Burial will take place at 1:30 PM on Tuesday at the Brooklyn Cemetery, Brooklyn Iowa. Rev. Donald Bogue will officiate. Visitation will be held on Monday from 3:00-6:00 PM at Overton Funeral Home in Dysart.

Ada Carrie Schnell was born on June 11, 1904 at Brooklyn, Iowa; the daughter of Ernst and Velma (White) Busch. She attended country school in Madison Township near Brooklyn. After completing her education, Ada worked on the family farm near Brooklyn. She married Wayne F. Andes on March 5, 1929, at Gilman, Iowa and they made their home on the farm near Brooklyn. She worked for a drug store in Brooklyn for a time. Wayne passed away on August 30, 1946. Ada moved to Dysart after her marriage to William Schnell on September 20, 1949, at Waterloo, IA. They lived their entire married life in Dysart, where Bill and Ada made a home for Bill’s sons, Dean and Allen who were still at home. William passed away on July 4, 1967 and Ada continued to live in their home in Dysart. Ada was a homemaker much of her life and worked at Hallberg’s grocery store for several years. She also cared for children in their homes while their parents were away. She was a member of the Dysart United Methodist Church in Dysart. In her spare time she loved to garden, enjoyed working with her flowers and crocheting. She moved to make her home at the Brooklyn Care Center in April of 1999. More recently Ada’s health had failed and was a patient at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell where her death came on Thursday, November 01, 2001 at the age of 97 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, 2 brothers; Harry and Alvin Busch and a sister Clara Gray. Ada is survived by a sister Velma (Mrs. Elver) Roudabush of Brooklyn, three step children, Dean Schnell of Bimigy, MN, Allen Schnell of Cedar Rapids and Ardith Bull of Dysart. Ada is also survived by eleven step-grandchildren, nineteen step-great-grandchildren, two nieces and two nephews.

Michael George Stueck was born February 23, 1959 at Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Arnold and Lorraine (Altemeier) Stueck. He received his education at Dysart-Geneseo graduating in the Class of 1978. Mike was known by his friends as “Ringo” because he played drums in the high school band. He continued his education at an area college in Sheldon, Iowa specializing in the operation of heavy equipment. He then worked for Otis Hilmer Excavating Co. until 1982. Mike moved to the Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas area and was employed by L.H. Lacy Co. as a heavy equipment operator. In free moments he enjoyed spending time with his friends, watching sports and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. Mike also enjoyed golfing and weight lifting. On Sunday, September 23, 2001 Mike was walking near his home when he suffered a heart attack and his death came on that day at the age of 42 years. Mike is preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his mother Lorraine Hilmer of Dysart, Iowa, two sisters, Connie and her husband Brad Oelmann of Ankeny, Iowa and Arnola Stueck of Chicago, Illinois, one niece Shelby and one nephew Nicholas.

Anna Jane Thompson was born in Tama County on July 15, 1905 to David and Elizabeth (Whannel) Young. Ann received her elementary education at Toledo, Iowa and later received her high school education at Gladbrook. On September 3, 1925 she married Herbert Thompson at the Amity Presbyterian Church near Dinsdale. They first made their home in Traer, Iowa before moving to Garrison, Iowa in 1933. In April of 1937, Ann and Herb moved to make their home in Dysart. In addition to caring for her family, Ann was the bookkeeper for the family business of Tama-Benton Oil Co. In free moments, Ann continued to enjoy spending time with her family. She enjoyed crocheting, playing cards as well as cooking and baking for her family and friends. Ann was also known for her knitting skills and knitted baby caps for area new born infants. Following Herbert’s death on August 21, 1980, Ann continued to make her home in Dysart. Her death came at her home on Friday Nov. 2,2001 at the age of 96 years. Ann was a member of the United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers; Charles and DeVere, one sister Margaret, and a son-in law Lloyd. She is survived by her daughter Roma Jean Dicken of Cedar Rapids, three sons and their wives: Robert and Grace Thompson of Cedar Rapids, Donald and Sharon Thompson of Tempe AZ. and James and Vicky Thompson of Cedar Rapids, as well as nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.
