Lawrence S. Slotsky
Lawrence S. Slotsky, 77, of Sioux City died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at noon today at Congregation Beth Shalom, with spiritual leader James Sherman officiating. Rabbi Thomas Friedmann of Temple Israel in Columbus, Ga., will deliver the eulogy. Burial will be in Mount Sinai Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Slotsky was born Jan. 15, 1921, in Sioux City, the son of William C. and Kate Slotsky. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in business adminstration.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a navigator on B-29 airplanes. He was stationed on Tinian Island and flew 32 bombing mission over Japan, including a low level raid that enabled the Enola Gay to complete its mission. His awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross with five oak leaf clusters.
He married Charlotte Liebling on May 1, 1946, in Kansas City, Mo. The couple moved to St. Joseph, Mo., where they lived for six years and he was employed as the credit manager for Liebling Furniture Company. They moved to Sioux City in 1952, where he became the general manager of the Credit Bureau of Sioux City. He was president and chairman of the board for Northwest Iowa Credit Bureaus Inc. and publisher of the Daily Reporter newspaper.
He served as president of the Jewish Federation, the Sioux City Concert Course, the Mount Sinai Temple, the Iowa Credit Managers Association, the Associated Credit Bureaus of Upper Midwest and the Associated Credit Bureaus of Iowa. He served as chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, the Iowa Civil Rights Commission, the Aviation Committee for Sioux City Chamber of Commerce, the United Way Board of Directors, the United Way Campaign and the Salvation Army Advisory Board.
He served on the board of directors for the Siouxland Better Business Bureau and Western Iowa Tech Foundation and was a founding member of Consumer Credit Counseling Service. He also served on the executive committee at St. Luke's Regional Hospital.
He enjoyed being a private pilot, with several thousand hours of flight time.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Jeff and Peggy and Don and Liz, all of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Marilyn and Craig Jensen of Sioux City; nine grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Bernard and Margot Slade of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; and a sister, Myna Oppenheim of Beachwood, Ohio.
Memorials in his name may be directed to either the Mazon in care of Congregation Beth Shalom or the A.I.D. Center.

Edna Poppenheimer
Edna May (Jones) Poppenheimer, 88, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday at Mount Clair Nursing Home in Omaha.
There will be no services. West Center Chapel of Omaha is in charge of the arrangements.

Helen E. Konicek
Helen E. Konicek, 96, of South Sioux City died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, at a South Sioux City nursing home following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Michael Catholic Church, with the Rev. David Liewer officiating. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Catholic Cemetery at Wisner, Neb. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Becker-Hunt Funeral Home. Visitation will resume with a scriptural wake service at 8 p.m. today at the church.
Mrs. Konicek was born Nov. 24, 1901, in Fort Calhoun, Neb., the daughter of Charles W. and Ethel (Kuhn) Rutledge. She graduated from Pender (Neb.) High School and Wayne (Neb.) State Teachers College.
She married John J. Konicek on June 15, 1922, in Pender. He died June 21, 1961, in West Point, Neb.
She taught elementary and high school in various locations; her last employment was in South Sioux City.
She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and the Altar Society.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Donald "Barney" and Janice of Bancroft, Neb.; a daughter, Ramona e. barry of Laughlin, Nev.; three sisters, Elsie Hulsebusch of Lincoln, Neb., Winifred Pinkstaff of Las Vagas, Nev. and Ailene Smith of Fairfield Bay, Ark.; four grandchildren, Jeff, Brad and Barrey Konicek and Kellee Hermelbracht; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John Rutledge; and three sisters, Mabel Fischer, Ethel Konicek and Josephine Toelle.
Pallbearers will be Jeff, Brad, Barrey and Jason Konicek, Len Hermelbracht and Dan Bousquet.

Walter L. Burge
Walter L. Burge, 85, of Dacono, Colo., died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, in Longmont, Colo.
Services will be Saturday in Sioux City. Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory of Longmont, Colo., handled the cremation.
Mr. Burge was born Oct. 20, 1912, in Sioux City.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II from 1943 to 1945.
He married Alta. In 1977, the couple moved to Dacono from Sioux City. She died in 1994.
He was a retired machinist.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Henry G. and Ethel Mae of Sioux City and Walter Thomas and Deniece of Broomfield, Colo.; four daughters and their husbands, Eva Marie Ann and Larry Lafave of Dacono, Sandra R. and Richard Johnson of Idaho Springs, Colo., Victoria J. and Larry Lawrence of Kansas City, Kan., and Marilyn J. and Rito Alvarado of Wichita Falls, Texas; six sisters, Margaret, Mildred, Irma, Frances, Jeanine and Claudette; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Henry J. Sponder
Henry J. "Pete" Sponder, 71, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Monday in Harlingen, Texas.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Frances Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Dewayne J. Sitzman
Dewayne J. Sitzman, 66, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at his residence following a lengthy
illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. Richard Sitzman officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery at Merrill, Iowa. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a Scripture service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Sitzman was born Aug. 1, 1931, in Hinton, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Alvina (Ruhland) Sitzman. He moved to Sioux City in 1942.
He married JoAnn Dalgliesh on April 19, 1952, in Sioux City.
He was employed with Armour and Company for many years and then with Marian Health Center, retiring in 1991.
He was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Daniel of Sioux City; three daughters, Debra Sitzman and Cindy and her husband, Butch Sperry, all of Sioux City, and Becky and her husband, Troy Sand, of Marcus, Iowa; a brother and his wife, Dennis and Bonnie of Sioux City; a sister and her husband, Virginia and Robert Petersen of Merrill, Iowa; and five grandchildren, Tim and Michelle Fertig, Robbie and Kyle Sperry and Cole Sand.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Eldon and Darvin.
Pallbearers will be Randy Stabe, Floyd and Jim Sitzman, Gary Petersen, Richard Bauerly and Dale Manning.

Matthew F. Girard
Matthew F. Girard, 28, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital of injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Robert J. Schimmer officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Girard was born March 14, 1969, in Sioux City, the son of Maynard M. and Dona M. (Wood) Girard.
He graduated from West High School. He was studying to be an appraiser.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a volunteer with the Knights of Columbus, working toward his membership.
Survivors include his mother of Sioux City; a daughter, Tamisha Marie Girard of Sioux City; three brothers, Mark, Martin and Maris Girard, all of Sioux City; and his paternal grandparents, Harvey and Odella Girard of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his father and maternal grandparents.

Olive M. Sample
Olive M. "Dolly" Sample, 77, of Sioux City died Tuesday at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Riverside Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8:30 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Berkemier Funeral Home.

Lester H. Lazere
Lester H. Lazere, 79, of Sioux City died Wednesday at Westwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. There will be no vistation.

Ervin Mielke
HARTELY, Iowa - Ervin Mielke, 78, of Hartley died Tuesday at Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hartley. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Harrison Township Cemetery at May City, Iowa. Visitation will begin at noon today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Warner Funeral Home in Hartley.

Edwin Hammer
IDA GROVE, Iowa - Edwin William Bernard Hammer, 79, of Ida Grove died unexpectedly Monday, Feb. 2, 1998 at his residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holstein, Iowa, with the Rev. Curtis Benson officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery at Battle Creek, Iowa, with military rites conducted by American Legion McNamara-Moore Post 61. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
Mr. Hammer was born Feb. 19, 1918, in Smithland, Iowa, the son of John and Minnie (Krueger) Hammer. He attended Smithland Country School.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1946. He was stationed with the 381st Division, and was wounded in Okinawa. His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart Medal, the Bronze Star Medal and numerous other awards.
He married Rachel Ann Spotts on Jan. 28, 1948, in Hutchinson, Minn. He farmed in the Ida County area, retiring and moving into Ida Grove in 1993.
He was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, the American Legion and the Ida County Democrats.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Michael and Leanne of Holstein and Mark and Londa of Ida Grove; a daughter and her husband, Marvel and Scott Hompland of Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren, Christy, Marissa, Logan and Angie; a brother and his wife, Lewis and Norma of Holstein; and a sister, Della Zahler of Portland, Ore.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Bertha Huffman, Helen Husted and Doria Regas; and a brother, Lester.

Peter Rave Jr.
WINNEBAGO, Neb. - Peter Rave Jr., 93, of Winnebago died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services were held Monday, Feb. 2, at the Native American Church in Winnebago. Edison Mahkuk officiated. Burial was in John Rave Cemetery.
Mr. Rave was born July 10, 1904, in Winnebago, the son of Peter Rave and Alice Ricehill.
He married Lucille Logan on March 17, 1926. The couple moved to Albert Lea, Minn., in 1943 and returned to Winnebago in 1972.
He was a member of the Native American Church.
Surviors include his wife; a son, Warren; two daughters, Eloise and her husband, Wilbur Slick, and Patricia Madson; four sisters, Ida Bahr, Viola LaPointe, Josephine Mahkuk and Marie Whitewater; 29 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by six sons, Elmer, Clifford, Dallas, Alan, Norman and Dennis; and a daughter, Vivian.

Koenraad De Jong
ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Koenraad M. De Jong, 59, of Orange City died Wednesday at Orange City Municipal Hospital.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Dover Avenue Alliance Church in Orange City. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery prior to the service Saturday. There will be a prayer service at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Marie J. De Jong
MAURICE, Iowa - Marie J. De Jong, 86, of Riverside, Calif., formerly of Maurice and Bronson, Iowa, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, in Riverside.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, at New Life Community Church in Artesia, Calif.
Mrs. De Jong was born in Chicago.
She married Richard De Jong. The couple moved to Maurice in 1930. They owned and operated the Maurice Truck Service and then the Maurice Cafe. They moved to Bronson, where they operated the Bronson Feed and Hardware from 1947 to 1949.
In 1956, they moved to Artesia, where she drove a school bus for the ABC Unified School District until retiring in 1977. He died in 1981.
She entered the Artesia Christian Home in 1981, then the Villa DeAnza Retirement Home in Riverside.
Survivors include a son, Richard Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters, Norma Jean Leichtweis of Anaheim, Calif. and Betty Ann Folsom of Riverside; two sisters, Ann Stewart of Las Vegas, Nev., and Bernice Sgobba of Joliet, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to the Americam Heart Association.

Robert P. Reilly
AURELIA, Iowa - Robert Payne "Bob" Reilly, 77, of Aurelia died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, in Mesa, Ariz.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, Iowa, with the Rev. Timothy Schott officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Aurelia. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with a parish wake service at 8 p.m., at the Wharton-Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia.
Mr. Reilly was born May 31, 1920, in Sioux City, the son of John and Lillie (Sargisson) Reilly. He attended school in Cherokee, and graduated from Aurelia High School in 1939.
He was employed as a truck driver for Herbert Will and with the Sioux City Stockyards.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a pilot during World War II.
He married Marian Will on Sept. 5, 1942, in South Sioux City. Following his discharge, he returned to work at the Sioux City Stockyards. The couple moved to Aurelia in 1950 to farm. He owned and operated Reilly Cattle Company and later sold Garst Seed Corn.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Aurelia Golf Course, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was president of the Maple Valley Insurance Company. He enjoyed dancing.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Linda and Robert Kelch of Peoria, Ill.; two sons and their wives, Dennis and Penny of Baxter, Iowa, and Larry and Shanda of Aurelia; eight grandchildren, Susan Griffin, Sarah Holles and Benjamin, Stephanie, Robbie, Tadd, Kasey and Kalli Reilly; four sisters, Charlotte Eisenmenger of Cherokee, Helen and her husband, Marvin Rasmussen, of Hubbard, Neb., Bernice Nettleton and JoAnn Swoboda, both of Sioux City; his mother-in-law, Gladys Will of Aurelia; a brother-in-law and his wife, Dean and Eveline Will of Aurelia; a sister-in-law and her husband, Joann and George Pithan of Kimberling City, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, Herbert Will.
A memorial fund has been established.

Gladys M. Bettin
ONAWA, Iowa - Gladys Marie Bettin, 90, of Onawa died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Donald R. Ludwick officiating. Burial will be in Climbing Hill (Iowa) Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the church. Pearson Funeral Home of Onawa is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Bettin was born Jan. 23, 1908, in Sioux City, the daughter of Lafe and Luella (Linis) Pittman. She graduated from Holly Springs (Iowa) High School and entered the Lutheran School of Nursing in Sioux City, graduating in 1931.
She was employed as a registered nurse with Lutheran Hospital in Sioux City, the Onawa Hospital and Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa.
She married Melvin A. Bettin on Sept. 23, 1935, in Sloan, Iowa. The couple lived in the Hornick, Holly Springs and Sloan area until moving to Onawa in 1948. He died Jan. 18, 1994, in Onawa.
She entered Elmwood Care Centre in June 1990.
She was a member of First Christian Church, the Ladies Circle III and the Alumni Association of the Lutheran School of Nursing. She enjoyed raising roses.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Marlan and Pat of Onawa; two grandchildren, Charles S. Bettin and Catherine R. Mack; three great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Glen and Ruby Pittman of Onawa; two sisters, Opal McRae and Bernice Lamb, both of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Carol Ann; and two sisters, Aurilla Holverson and Addie Pittman.

Michael J. Donahue
LE MARS, Iowa - Michael James Donahue, 59, of Le Mars, formerly of Sioux Falls, S.D., died Wednesday at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Miller Funeral Home in Sioux Falls. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.

Evelyn M. Perrin
MAPLETON, Iowa - Evelyn May Perrin, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton, with the Rev. Linda Boggs officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery at Castana, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.
Mrs. Perrin was born Dec. 18, 1911, in Spirit Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Van and Edith (Webb) Kidd. She graduated from high school and received her teaching certificate from Iowa State University.
She married Ned Perrin on June 17, 1933, in Spirit Lake. The couple lived in the Mapleton area, where she taught school. In 1980, they moved into Mapleton.
She was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, the Women's Fellowship, the Castana Thursday Club, the P.E.O. Chapter FQ and the Delta Delta Delta Sorority and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.She served as the educational chairman for the Monona County American Cancer Society. She was a 4-H leader, Sunday School teacher and an organist at St. Peter's. She enjoyed knitting, crossword puzzles and baking bread.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Dr. Richard of Lincoln, Neb.; a daughter and her husband, DiAnn and Lyle Rose of Mapleton; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Vorus.
Memorials may be given to the Fisher-Whiting Library in Mapleton.

Sylvia Sangwin
AURELIA, Iowa - Sylvia Sangwin, 90, of Aurelia died Wednesday at Sunset Knoll Retirement Home in Aurelia.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, with a family prayer service at 1:15 p.m., at Congregational United Church of Christ in Aurelia. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery at rural Meriden, Iowa. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa.

Meredith Johnson
WISNER, Neb. - Meredith Lundstrom "Swede" Johnson, 82, of Wisner died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point, Neb.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church in Wisner, with the Rev. Alan Baglien officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Concord (Neb.) Cemetery.
Mr. Johnson was born Sept. 17, 1915, in Laurel, Neb., the son of Carl and Sadie (Lundstrom) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended Concord Public Schools.
He married Helen Ediger on June 6, 1959, in Spencer, S.D.
He owned and operated Johnson Trucking in Concord. In 1972, the couple moved to Wisner, where he was employed with Cruse Trucking for 14 years.
He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and the Wisner Senior Center. He served as mayor of Concord and was a volunteer on the Concord Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Dean and Kathi of Valparaiso, Neb.; a daughter and her husband, Jane and Gayle Broekemeier of Howells, Neb.; five grandchildren, Justin Hauschild, Alysha and Caitlyn Johnson and Emily and Laura Broekemeier; and a sister and her husband, Anita and Jake Vanderheiden of Laurel.

John Langstraat
SIBLEY, Iowa - John Langstraat, 77, of Sibley died unexpectedly Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Reformed Church in Sibley, with the Rev. Gary Van Heukelom, the Rev. Brad Langstraat and the Rev. Kim Skattum officiating. Burial will be in Holman Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Walton, Roste and Vogel Funeral Home in Sibley.
Mr. Langstraat was born Oct. 31, 1920, near Newkirk, Iowa, the son of William and Jennie (Van Meeteren) Langstraat. He was raised near Newkirk and attended country school.
He farmed with his father until 1945, when he began farming on his own.
He married Henrietta Mastbergen in December 1946, in Archer, Iowa. In 1955, the couple moved to their farm near Sibley. She died July 16, 1970.
He married Ida Mouw-Thompson on June 2, 1972, in Sioux Falls.
He was employed with Farmers Mutual Insurance in Sibley, then returned to farming. He retired in 1993. They moved into Sibley in October 1996.
He was a member of First Reformed Church, where he taught Sunday School, was a past deacon and an elder. He served on the board of directors for Hope Haven and Bigelow United Co-op Elevator. He was a trustee for Viola Township.
They did volunteer mission work in the southern United States and Mexico. He enjoyed singing with the Senior Saints.
Survivors include his wife; four sons and their wives, Warren and Mary Louise of Wassenaar, Netherlands, Arnie and Diane of Sibley, Harlan and Dorothy of Eagan, Minn., and Vern and Joey of Louisville, Colo.; a stepdaughter, Judy Witcher of Denver, Colo.; a stepson, Greg Thompson of Le Mars, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; a great-grandson; two sisters, Angeline Torrenga of Clinton, Wis., and Jennie and her husband, Gene Vande Brake, of Maurice, Iowa; three brothers, Dick and his wife, Minnie, and Pete, all of Orange City, Iowa, and Howard and his wife, Joy, of Sibley; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Cornie, Bill and Walter.

Linda Peterson
ALTA, Iowa - Linda Colleen Peterson, 47, of Alta died Tuesday of injuries suffered in an automobile acident.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Barker Funeral Home in Alta. Burial will be in Scandinavian Cemetery in Alta. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 7:30 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.
Hazel Olson, 76, of Vermillion, S.D., died Wednesday; Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home of Vermillion.
