Catherine P. Alvarez
Catherine P. Alvarez, 79, of South Sioux City died Saturday, April 12, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial Funeral Mass services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. David Liewer officiating. The body will be cremated and burial will be at a later date. There will be no visitation. Larkin Northside Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Alvarez was born March 13, 1918, in Sioux City, the daughter of Stanley and Catherine (Dressler) Bocian. She graduated from Cathedral High School in 1936.
She married Albert Alvarez on July 4, 1938, in Sioux City. He died Dec. 12, 1966, in Sioux City. She moved to Sheridan, Wyo. around 1970, where she lived for 11 years. She then moved to Fort Collins, Colo., where she lived for five years. She returned to the Sioux City area in 1986. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Anita and Gary Strawn of Sioux City; three sons, Dennis and his wife, Sally of Dallas, Texas, Joel and his wife Jean of Lake Ridge, Va. and Douglas of Phoenix, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Stanley.
Hilma K. Blecha-Anderson
Hilma K. Blecha-Anderson, 94, of Sioux City died Sunday at a Sioux City nursing home following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Bohemian National Cemetery at Omaha, Neb. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Edna Holt
Edna Holt, 92, of Sioux City died Thursday, April 10, 1997, at Matney Westside Manor.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home, with the Rev. E.D. Pappadackis of the Third Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Holt was born May 31, 1904, at Ponca, Neb., to Jesse and Alice (Beith) Teller. At an early age, she moved with her family to the McCook Lake, S.D., area, then into Sioux City in 1920. She married Ned W. Holt Dec. 25, 1927, at Sioux City. The couple moved to South Sioux City in 1972. He died March 31, 1988, at Sioux City. She had worked for Palmer Candy Co. and Johnson Biscuit for over 15 years.
She was a member of the Third Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a brother, Lawrence Teller of Medford, Ore.; two sisters, Dora and her husband George Smith of Sioux City, and Ora Irwin of McCook Lake; a sister-in-law, Darlene Teller of Des Moines, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Charles; and a sister, Elizabeth Swift.
Pallbearers will be Michael and Paul Irwin, Brett Miller, Dennis Bernard, Butch Morgan, and Ken Lillie.
Marie E. Levine
Marie E. Levine, 86, of South Sioux City died Saturday, April 12, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Terry L. Thomlinson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitaiton will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.
Mrs. Levine was born March 19, 1911, in Dakota City, the daughter of Edward and Emma (Blacketer) Sundt. She married Karl Levine on Feb. 8, 1969, in Dakota City. She was employed as a clerk and bookkeeper at several local business.
She was a member of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church and the South Sioux City Senior Center.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Harold Rasmussen of Seattle, Wash.; two daughters, Carol Wall of Albuquerque, N.M. and Sally Ream of South Sioux City; four grandchidlren, Scott, Kris, Kristene and Mandy; three great-grandchidlren; and a brother, Edward Sundt of Storm Lake, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by a brother, George; and two sisters, Mabel Myers and Helen Johnson.
Memorials may be given in her name to the South Sioux City Senior Center.
Henry W. Punt
Henry W. Punt, 54, of Sioux City died Sunday, April 13, 1997, at the Casa De Paz following a lengthy illness.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Laird R. Keever, pastor of Mayflower Congregational Church, officiating. The body was cremated. Burial will be at a later date. There will be no visitation.
Mr. Punt was born Dec. 12, 1942, in Sioux Center, Iowa, the son of Henry A. and Wilhelmina (VanDeBerg) Punt. He graduated from Sioux Center High School and attended the National Business Training.
He married Ann Jansen in July 1962, in Sioux Center. He married Kerry Gatewood in January 1977, in Sioux Center.
He was employed as a blackjack dealer at WinnaVegas, then at Riverside Casino in Laughlin, Nev. before retiring in 1996.
He was a member of the AA Fellowship in Sioux City.
Survivors include his mother of Sioux Center; a son, Joshua of Anchorage, Alaska; two daughters and their husbands, Sandra and Brad Reynders and Tami and Tony Derrick all of Sioux City; a stepdaughter, Sheree Gomez of Anchorage, Alaska; four grandchildren; three brothers and their wives, Donald and Alvina of Sioux Center, Lloyd and Gracia of Pipestone, Minn. and Leroy and Joan of Maurice, Iowa; two sisters and their husbands, Audrey and Lawrence Groen and Dorothy and Curtis VanBriesen all of Sioux Center; and a sister-in-law, Arlene Bidwell of Sioux Center.
He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother, Ralph.
Mary J. Schaefer
Mary J. Schaefer, 85, of Sioux City died Friday, April 11, 1997, at the Countryside Retirement Home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, with the Rev. George Zehnder officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.
Mrs. Schaefer was born Dec. 8, 1911, in Lawton, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Engle) Moore. She moved to Sioux City as a young girl.
She married Arthur Smith on June 4, 1938. He died April 2, 1973. She married Alfred Schaefer on Sept. 17, 1977, in Sioux City. She was employed at Fishgall's.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her husband; a stepdaughter, Jan Kilbride of Omaha, Neb.; a stepson, John Schaefer of Burlington, Iowa; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a nephew.
She was preceded in death by a son, Donald Smith; a brother, John Moore; and a nephew.
Pallbearers will be Frank Yellman, Bill Thompson, Harold Grubel, Joe Gross, Ned Ingle, and Vernelle Miller.
Memorials may be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church or the Alzheimer Association.
Harold H. Wendt
Harold H. Wendt, 88, of South Sioux City died Thursday, April 10, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Hedley, pastor of Open Bible Church in Sioux City, officiating. The body will be cremated and burial will be at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Wendt was born Aug. 6, 1908, in Gary, S.D., the son of Claude and Addie (Guile) Wendt. He married Inez Blue in 1942. She died in 1992.
He was employed by T.S. Martin's, Wilson Package Delivery, Harris Janitor Supply and drove a cab for several cab companies before retiring in 1974.
Survivors include two stepsons, Ralph and Gene; three stepdaughters, Arlene, Geraldine and Darlene; a brother and his wife, Jerry and Dorothy of Sioux City; a sister, Jewell Huffman of Paris, Texas; and several step-grandchildren.
Marie Bonsma
ALLENDORF, Iowa - Marie Bonsma, 87, of Allendorf died Saturday at the Country View Manor in Sibley, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Sibley. Burial will be in Holman Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Walton-Roste Funeral Home in Sibley.
Helen Chatterton
SPENCER, Iowa - Helen Chatterton, 84, of Spencer died Friday at the Spencer Municipal Hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at First Congregational Church in Spencer. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery at Peterson, Iowa. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
Robert R. Dagel
SIBLEY, Iowa - Robert R. "Bob" Dangel, 57, of Sibley, formerly of Melvin, Iowa, died Saturday at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Sibley. Burial will be in Holman Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Andringa Funeral Home in Sibley.
Ivan K. Jensen
VERMILLION, S.D. - Ivan K. Jensen, 75, of Vermillion died Sunday at the Dakota Hospital in Vermillion.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion. Burial will be at a later date in Bluffview Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion is in charge of the arrangements.
Ella A. Nelson
HAWARDEN, Iowa - Ella A. Nelson, 96, of Sioux City, formerly of Hawarden, died Saturday at the Casa De Paz Care Center in Sioux City.
Services will bve at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at American Lutheran Church in Hawarden. Burial will be in Lands Lutheran Cemetery at rural Hudson, S.D. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Paul J. Reis
EARLY, Iowa - Paul J. Reis, 72, of Early died Saturday at the Loring Hospital in Sac City, Iowa.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at the Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City.
Fred Rewinkel
WAKEFIELD, Neb. - Fred "Ted" Rewinkel, 68, of Wakefield died Saturday at the Providence Medical Center in Wayne, Neb.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Wakefield. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Bressler-Humlicek Funeral Home in Wakefield.
Luella M. Robbins
PIERSON, Iowa - Luella M. Robbins, 86, of Pierson died Saturday, April 12, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Earnest-Dickison-Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley, Iowa, with the Rev. Leslie Larson officiating. Burial will be in Good Hope Cemetery at rural Correctionville, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mrs. Robbins was born Sept. 6, 1910, at Fort Atkinson, Wis., the daughter of Otta and Lydia (Lechinsky) Falk. She was raised and graduated from high school in Fort Atkinson.
She married Harold E. Robbins on June 13, 1944. The couple made their home in Pierson. He died in January 1986.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Rita and Steve Callaghan of Pierson; a son, Clyde C. Robbins of Modale, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Jami Dixon, Lisa Cusick, Keri, Nathan, Jarrod, Lynette and Deseree Robbins; two great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Hazel Falk of Fort Atkinson, Wis., Eva Falk of Minneapolis, Minn., Betty Morgan of Wyoming, and Beverly Buchwald of California.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.
Audrey C. Rodick
BANCROFT, Neb. - Audrey C. Rodick, 78, of Bancroft died Saturday at West Point, Neb.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bancroft. Burial will be in Bancroft Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Munderloh Funeral Home in Bancroft.
Eugene Stabler
MACY, Neb. - Eugene Stabler, 67, of Macy died Saturday, April 12, 1997, at Carl T. Curtis Health Center in Macy.
Burial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Alfred W. Gilpin Community Center in Macy, with Mr. and Mrs. Rufus White in charge. Burial will be in Omaha Indain Cemetery in Macy under the direction of the Pearson Funeral Home of Onawa, Iowa. A traditional wake service is being held at the Angeline Lovejoy residents in Walthill, Neb. Native American Church services will be Tuesday at the Tribal Council Building in Macy.
Mr. Stabler was born Aug. 15, 1929, in Winnebago, Neb., the son of Morgan and Mary (Miller-Freemont) Stabler. He had lived in Omaha and Emerson, Neb. before returning to Macy in 1995.
He was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include two sisters, Audrey Freemont of Lyons, Neb. and Angeline Lovejoy of Walthill; two brothers, Delbert Freemont of Omaha and Francis Freemont of Walthill; a half sister Voilet (Stabler) King of Omaha; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mildred Lyons and Dallas Freemont; and his grandmother, Lois (Canby) Miller.
Artie Vander Tuig
ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Artie (Van Gorp) Vander Tuig, 99, of Orange City died Saturday, April 12, 1997, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Rev. Steven Vander Molen officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the VanEtten-Oolman-VanGelder Funeral Home in Orange City.
Mrs. Vander Tuig was born July 19, 1897, in Orange City, the daughter of Henry and Dora (Kleinhesselink) Boone. She was raised in Orange City.
She married William Arthur Van Gorp on Jan. 24, 1921, in Orange City. The couple lived in Orange City, where she assisted Dr. Doornink with delivering babies. Later the couple were caretakers of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. He died Feb. 11, 1969, in Orange City.
She married Peter Vander Tuig on April 11, 1975, in Orange City. In 1980, the couple moved into the Pioneer Memorial Home. He died Dec. 7, 1982, in Orange City. In October 1993, she transferred to the Long Term Care Facility at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.
She was the oldest member of the First Reformed Church, where she belonged to the Dorcus Circle, which became the Priscilla-Dorcus Circle. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Orange City.
Survivors include two daughters, Dorthena and her husband Marion "Bud" Vander Laan of Orange City and Vera Leu of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two sons and their wives, Darwyn and Jeannine Van Gorp of Lake Junaluska, N.C. and William and Joyce Van Gorp of Orange City; two stepsons and their wives, Mitchel and Mathilde Vander Tuig and Richard and Ruth Vander Tuig all of Primghar, Iowa; two stepdaughters, Sadie Hilbrands of Buena Park, Calif. and Gladys and her husband Don Hylarides of Hudsonville, Mich.; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; 26 stepgrandchildren; nine stepgreat-grandchidlren; a brother and his wife, Henry and Dena Boone of Orange City; and a sister, Jennie Heemstra of Orange City.
She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Larry Leu; a stepson-in-law, Jack Hilbrands; and six brothers, Gerrit, Arie, Andrew H., John H., William H., and Doris Boone.
Jeanette Van Meeteren
SHELDON, Iowa - Jeanette Van Meeteren, 94, of Sibley, Iowa, formerly of Sheldon, died Friday at the Country View Manor in Sibley.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time today at the funeral home.
Ellen M. Wall
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Ellen May Wall, 70, of Storm Lake died Saturday, April 12, 1997, at the Buena Vista County Hospital of cancer.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Clifton Ellerbeck officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be all day Tuesday, with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Fratzke Funeral Home in Storm Lake.
Mrs. Wall was born Oct. 18, 1926, in Ruthven, Iowa, the daughter of Abraham and Evelyn (Chase) Zielstra. She attended rural Clay County schools and graduated from Spencer High School in 1944. She attended business school in Minnesota. She was employed at Montgomery Wards and Company in Minneapolis. She moved to Storm Lake in 1948 and worked for the Storm Lake Elevator.
She married Harold D. Wall on Jan. 16, 1949, in Ruthven.
She was a member of Storm Lake United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday School and Bible School teacher. She was a past president of the United Methodist Women, where she had been awarded a lifetime UMW pin. She was past president of the Buena Vista Garden Club, which is associated with the Federated Garden Clubs of Iowa, the National Council of State Garden Clubs and the Iowa Horticultural Society. She enjoyed playing bridge and achieved the status of Regional Master.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Kathy and her husband Wayne Kramer of Denton, Neb. and Brenda Wall of Storm Lake; two sons and their wives, Kenneth and Karen of Coralville, Iowa and Russell and Sue of Johnston, Iowa; five grandchildren, Abraham, Kate, Hannah, Alex and Brianne Wall; four brothers, Harold of Rochester, Minn., Dale of Albuquerque, N.M., Raymond and his wife Pam of San Diego, Calif. and Floyd of Ormand Beach, Fla.; and four sisters, Ione Harrison of Tacoma, Wash., Carol and her husband Merle Andersen of Worthington, Minn, Linda and her husband Leonard Poshusta of Mazeppa, Minn. and Margaret Dutra of Pinale, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Doris Shaeffer; and two brothers, Wayne and Vernon.
Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church Kitchen Fund.

SIBLEY, Iowa - Irene G. Willemssen, 90, of Sibley died Saturday at the Sibley Care Center.
