Bernard Benton
Bernard "Bernie" Benton, 52, of Sioux City died Monday, August 11, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital after a short illness of lung cancer.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Alex T. Wash-ington officiating. The body will be cremated following the service and burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Benton was born Sept. 22, 1944 in Ponca, Neb. He graduated from Emerson (Neb.) High School.
He married Deanna Nelson in 1968. She died in 1996.
He married Violeta Torda on Feb. 29, 1984, in Sioux City.
In 1969 he began employment at Cargill as a machine operator.
He was a life member of Sergeant Floyd Post 1973 of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also in charge of the Sioux City Pool League.
He was a Vietnam Veteran and served with the United States Army.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Brian and Bradley Benton and Dennis Becher, all of Sioux City; a daughter, Wanita Benton of Sioux City; his mother, Fern Benton of Allen, Neb.; a brother, Randall Benton of Akron, Iowa; three sisters, Carol Brown of Milton-Freewater, Ore., Merna Jones of Allen, Neb., and Velda Martin of Amarillo, Texas; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Glen Ford
Glen V. Ford, 91, of Sioux City died Monday at a local nursing home following an extended illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Reorganized Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City.
Bethane Highman
Bethane Highman, 81, of Sioux City died Sunday, Aug. 10, 1997.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel in Sioux City. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services.
Rose Immele
Rose E. Immele, 95, of Lenexa, Kan., formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 1997, in Overland Park, Kan., from a brief illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Sioux City with the Rev. Thomas E. Geelan officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City.
Mrs. Immele was born Jan. 5, 1902, in Sioux City, the daughter of Fredrick John and Mary (Peterson) Holt.
She married Paul E. Immele on May 18, 1925, in Sioux City. He died Nov. 8, 1983, in Sioux City.
She was a resident of Sioux City until 1992 when she moved to Kansas.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament, the Girls of 68, World War I Veterans Auxillary and Northwest Railroad Auxillary.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Frances and Leonard Smith of Overland Park; a son and his wife, Daniel and Carolyn of St. Paul, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Marilyn; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Roger; a granddaughter, Karen; and nine brothers and sisters.
Dorene Kortum
Dorene E. Kortum, 84, of Sioux City died Sunday, Aug. 10, 1997, at Hallmark Care Center from an extended illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Douglas E. Dandurand of St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:30 at the funeral home.
Mrs. Kortum was born March 17, 1913, in Concordia, Kan., the daughter of Eugene and Cecilia (Cyrier) Dandurand.
She married Elmer A. Kortum in South Sioux City.
She was a Sioux City resident for more than 50 years.
She was employed at Cudahay Packing for several years and was also a homemaker.
She enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include four sons and their wives, Gerald and Fran Ashmore of Huntsville, Ala., Earl and Charleen Ashmore of Sioux City, Terry and Sherry Kortum of Sioux City and Randy and Brenda Kortum of Sioux City; three daughters, Mary A. "Midge" Ruble of Sioux City, Janice and her husband, Raymond Thompson, of Aurora, Ill. and Karen and her husband, Jerry Reed, of Minnesota; a brother, Ernie Dandurand of Sioux City; two sisters, Alma Hettinger of Minnesota and Ernestine and her husband, Kenneth Prichard, of Calif.; 33 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, several brothers and sisters and a son-in-law, Fred Ruble.
Pallbearers will be Michael, Kenneth and Norman Ruble, Robert and Michael Ashmore and Gerald Collins.
Marie Wesley
Marie D. Wesley, 102, of Sioux City died Thursday, Aug. 7, 1997, at a Sioux City retirement home following a brief illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at The Chapel of Morningside Lutheran with the Rev. Marvin Mueller officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
Mrs. Wesley was born Jan. 21, 1895, in Little Sioux, Iowa, the daughter of Percy and Cora (Johnson) Hicks. She graduated from Central High School in Sioux City in 1914.
She married Charles Wesley on Oct. 12, 1915, in Sioux City. He died Feb. 13, 1981, in Sioux City.
She was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church and a longtime Sioux City resident.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Robert and Julie of Whittier, Calif., and Warren and Leona of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Betty and Harold Fish of Sioux City; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Losee Hicks.
Memorials in her name may be directed to Morningside Lutheran Church or Sunrise Manor Retirement Home.
Lola H. Monroe, 80, of Sioux City died Monday; Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
Ida Bengston
CHEROKEE, Iowa - Ida H. Bengston, 97, of Cherokee died Sunday at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday with a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Burial will be in Good Hope Cemetery in rural Cherokee. Visitation will be all day today at the funeral home.
Ronald Burke
WESTFIELD, Iowa - Ronald Ernest Burke, 77, of Westfield died Friday, Aug. 8, 1997, in Iowa City, Iowa, following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Westfield Congregational Church with the Rev. Justin May officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron, Iowa.
Mr. Burke was born on Aug. 13, 1919, in Akron, the son of Frank E. and Mae (Chambers) Burke. He graduated from Akron High School in 1937 and attended Springfield Teacher's School for three years.
He married Martha McDougall on Sept. 16, 1940, in Dakota City.
He was employed as an assistant mail carrier in Akron and worked at the Westfield service station for five years. He also was employed with Boeing Aircraft in Seattle for 11 years and was Westfield city clerk for 16 years.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Patricia Ann and Donald Parnell of Liberal, Kan.; a son and his wife, Michael Ronald and Debra J. Burke of Waterloo, Iowa; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Anita Ann and Ken MacDicken of Snohomish, Wash; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Duane Burke; and two sisters, Irene Burke and Izetta Holm.
Pallbearers will be Darcy Fletcher, Dr. Barry Knapp, Justin Burke, Aaron Burke, David Adkins, Tommy Adkins, Walt Hummel and Bill Hummel.
Marty Healy
SLOAN, Iowa - Marty W. Healy, 48, of Sloan died Sunday, August 10, 1997, at his residence.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Evangelical Covenant Church in Sloan with the Rev. Richard Moore officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Wood Funeral Home in Sloan.
Mr. Healy was born April 12, 1949, in rural Rinard, Iowa, the son of Walter Preston and Alice Louise (Loomis) Healy. He graduated from Lohrville, Iowa High School in 1967. He attended Iowa Community College at Fort Dodge, Iowa, receiving his associate of accounting degree in 1980. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake in 1982.
He received his master of divinity degree from the Siouxland Christian College and Theological Seminary affiliated with Kingsway International College Network in Des Moines and was currently working on his Ph.D in divinity.
He married Jean Rockdaschel on Feb. 4, 1972, in Elk Point, S.D.
He served in various churches prior to 1989 and was interim minister at the church in Schelswig, Iowa, from January to July of 1989.
At the time of his death, he was employed as an accountant with Rick Christoffers accounting firm in Sioux City and was serving as minister at United Church of Christ in Westfield, Iowa.
He served as treasurer of the Westwood Booster Club and was a past member of the Sloan Town Council.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters and their husbands, Robin and Les Petrick of Sloan, Mardette and Eric Bullock of Callender, Iowa, and Heather and Ed Cooner of Lincoln, Neb.; two sons and their wives, Dan and Tracy of Sloan and Bret and Sarah of Sioux City; two brothers, Charles of Maryville, Mo., and Milo of Spirit Lake, Iowa; and five grandchildren, Brittany and Brianna Petrick, Katlin and Nate Bullock and Malachi Cooner.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, Annette, and a grandson, Kruse Petrick.
Marie Hendrix
DENISON, Iowa - Marie Hendrix, 87, of Denison died Sunday at Noelridge Manor in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Denison Baptist Church. Burial will be in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today with an Eastern Star service at 7:30 p.m. at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison.
Lena Kleine
DANBURY, Iowa - Lena Kleine, 98, of Ontario, Calif., formerly of Danbury, died Thursday, Aug. 7, 1997.
Services were held Aug. 11, 1997, in Ontario.
Mrs. Kleine, the former Lena Hupke, was born Dec. 27, 1898.
She married John Kleine on May 28, 1924, in Danbury. The couple farmed for many years before moving to Ontario in 1961. He died Jan. 24, 1966.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Jerome and Barb Kleine and Bernard and Tillie Klein, all of Ontario; four daughters, Martha Uhl of Omaha, Dorine and Ed Keleher of Sioux City, Audrey and Dean Hilborn of Ontario and Ann Keleher of Lodi, Calif.; a sister, Bertha Schweizer of Ontario; 22 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter; a son; three grandchildren; four sisters, Mary Theobald, Anna Mohrhauser, Genevieve Flammang and Loretta Uhl; and four brothers, Joseph, Frank, John and Ben Hupke.
Dale Pierce
ELK POINT, S.D. - Dale A.F. Pierce, 76, of Elk Point died Sunday, Aug. 10, 1997, at Prairie Estates Care Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at United Parish Church in Elk Point with the Rev. Donald Greenough officiating. Burial will be in Elk Point Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon today at the Anderson Funeral Home in Elk Point and will continue at 7 p.m. at the church with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
Mr. Pierce was born April 27, 1921, in Elk Point, the son of Frank and Laura (Messer) Pierce. He graduated from Elk Point High School in 1939.
He served in the United States Air Corps during World War II.
He married Joan Wilkins on Jan. 23, 1945, in Bath, England. Following his discharge the couple resided in Elk Point where he was employed, through the years, with Hasson's Garage, John Deere Dealer and International Harvester Dealer and in maintenance with the Elk Point schools.
He was a member of United Parish Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 915 in Elk Point and a past member of Bert L. Smith American Legion Post 134 of Elk Point.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Roger and his friend, Suzie Teahan of Jefferson, S.D., and Mike of Sioux Falls, S.D.; three daughters, Patricia and her husband, Roger Skinner, of Elk Point, Shirley and her husband, Rodney Rosenbaum, of Elk Point and Maureen Draper of Sioux Falls; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a daughter, Cindy.
Elsie Zuiderweg
SHELDON, Iowa - Elsie Zuiderweg, 96, of Sheldon died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at Oak Park Care Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon with the Rev David Loveall officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.
Mrs. Zuiderweg was born July 13, 1901, in Hospers, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Josiena (Drost) De Vries. She attended rural school, Archer High School and Sheldon High School.
In 1921 she graduated with a normal training certificate enabling her to teach in rural schools. She taught in Sioux and O'Brien counties.
She married Garmt Zuiderweg. The couple moved to Paullina in 1960 where she was employed at Brink Hardware and Furniture for 10 years. He died in 1962.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, taught Sunday School, was active in Presbytertan Women and in Book Club and Expression Group of Paullina Women's Club. In Sheldon she was a member of Bethel Reformed Church and Martha Circle.
She enjoyed writing poems, making cornhusk dolls, crocheting, knitting and reading.
Survivors include a brother, Joe De Vries, and a sister, Minnie Brink both of Sheldon; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Dick, Gerrit and Jay; two sisters, Lucy De Vries and Jennie Aalders; a brother-in-law; a sister-in-law- and two stepdaughters, Lois Leaming and Ann Smithers.
