Adeline Craft
Adeline C. Craft, 85, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, at Casa de Paz Nursing Home.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Logan Park Cemetery with the Rev. Laird Keever officiating. There will be no visitation. Christy, Smith & Hockenberry Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Mrs. Craft was born April 7, 1912, in Sioux City, the daughter of John and Anna (Nagel) Fortney.
She married Arvin C. Kesner. He preceded her in death.
On Nov. 12, 1959, she married Clinton Craft in Elk Point, S.D. He died on Aug. 18, 1980, in Sioux City.
She was a lifetime resident of Sioux City and homemaker.
She enjoyed gardening and her flowers.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Johanson of Guntersville, Ala.; a granddaughter; four great-grandchildren; a niece; and a sister, Melda Morris of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by a grandson and a sister.
Shane Gries
Shane D. Gries, 24, of South Sioux City died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, in rural Thurston County, Neb., from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Glad Tiding Lighthouse with the Rev. Michael Ring and the Rev. Stanley Cook and the Rev. Gerald Gunstanson officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Becker-Hunt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Gries was born Jan. 10, 1973, in Sioux City, the son of Lonny G. and Trudy R. (Andersen) Gries. He was a member of the school choir and participated in state competition. He graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1992.
He was formerly employed at the Sioux City Foundry and also worked as a cook at various restaurants.
He was recognized by the City of South Sioux City for his volunteer work at the city park at Fourth Street and Fifth Avenue.
His hobbies included electronics and car radio installation.
He was a member of Glad Tiding Lighthouse.
Survivors include his mother, of South Sioux City; two sons, Logan Patrick of Lincoln and Skyler David of South Sioux City; a brother, Tenneil and his wife, Amy of Emerson, Neb.; a half brother, Jorden of Seagoville, Texas; a sister, Lisa and her husband, the Rev. Gerald Gunstanson of Elmo, Texas; grandmothers, Joan L. Andersen and Virginia Gries both of Sioux City; a great-grandfather, Charlie Gries of Sioux City; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jordon Douglas; his father; and his grandfathers, Earl Andersen and Clifford Gries.
Pallbearers will be Chris Engel, Dale Bulizak, Bob Bowman, Troy Plummer, Steve Petrick and Josh Lundahl.
Bethene Highman
Bethene Highman, 81, of Sioux City died Sunday, Aug. 10, 1997.
Services will be at 11 a.m. todayat the Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel in Sioux City, with the Rev. Elwood Rieke of First Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services.
Mrs. Highman was born Nov. 25, 1915, in Sioux City, the daughter of John and Helen Green. She graduated from East High School in 1933.
She married Alex Highman on Oct. 17, 1940. He died Dec. 26, 1984.
She was a longtime resident of Sioux City and was employed as a salesperson for Cook Paint in Sioux City and Omaha. Due to ill health she retired in 1961.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Jeffrey and Barbara and Erik and Gayle all of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Alexandra and Larry Sprague of Sioux City; three sisters, Wilma Campbell of Seward, Neb., Dorothy Foland and Marjorie Goulette both of Sioux City; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Green.
Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church.
William Johnson
William E. Johnson, 63, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital after a long illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Calvary Lutheran Church with the Rev. Glen R. Rachuy officiating. Burial, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Sergeant Floyd Post #1973, will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Johnson was born Dec. 3, 1933, in Los Angeles, Calif., the son of Richard and Agnes (Rollish) Johnson.
From 1950 to 1961 he served in the United States Army.
He married Lottie Kettler on March 18, 1959, in Germany.
He was a self employed truck driver from 1968 to 1979. He retired due to ill health.
He was a V.F.W. Sergeant Floyd Post #1973 life member.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, John and Carol of Omaha, Neb.; two daughters, Anna Salem of Sioux City and Diana and her husband, Tom Forest of Cathedral City, Calif., a brother and his wife, Richard and Mary of Riverside, Calif.; two sisters and their husbands, Linda and Jim Brown of Bolivar, Mo. and Laura and Jim Millard of Palm Desert, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Samantha Salem, Aaron Johnson and Christia Forest.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Thomas; and a sister, Ruth McInturf.
Pallbearers will be Bill and David Barkley, Jim Brown, Tom Forest, Aaron Johnson and Jim Kosher.
John Juelfs
John L. "Jack" Juelfs, 54, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, at his residence from a brief illness of cancer.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Christy, Smith & Hockenberry Funeral Home with the Rev. Marvin Mueller of Salem Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Fairfield Cemetery in Rock Branch, Iowa. There will be no visitation.
Mr. Juelfs was born Aug. 29, 1942, in Correctionville, Iowa, the son of Earl and Doris (Clary) Juelfs. He was raised in Correctionville and graduated from Correctionville High School in 1962.
In 1967 he graduated from Iowa State University. He received his teachers certificate from Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in Marysville, Mo. He lived in Woodbine, Iowa for several years and taught at the high school from 1967 to 1976. He moved back to the area in 1976 and to Sioux City in 1978.
He was employed at Diamond Vogel Paints and was manager for a short while.
Survivors include a sister, Linda Meadows of Sioux City; five nieces and nephews, Scott, Brent and Brian Meadows and Michael and Melissa Juelfs; and two great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Mark; and a brother-in-law, Royce Meadows.
Ralph Rasmussen
Ralph M. Rasmussen, 73, of South Sioux City, formerly of Emerson and Wakefield, Neb., died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, at his residence after a long illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Lukes Lutheran Church in Emerson, with the Rev. Don Wilken officiating. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City.
Mr. Rasmussen was born July 27, 1924, in Homer, Neb., the son of Harry and Sena M. (Jacobsen) Rasmussen.
He married Maxine A. Ruschmann of May 7, 1944, in Hubbard, Neb. The couple farmed in the Emerson area. From 1986 to 1989, they owned and operated Maxine's Cafe in Wakefield. He was employed as a school bus driver for Emerson-Hubbard School District for 25 years. They retired and moved to South Sioux City in 1989.
He was a member of St. Lukes Lutheran Church and had served on the church council.
Survivors include his wife; three sons and their wives, Virgil and Irene of Emerson, DeWayne and Beth of Sioux City and Gaylen and Sherry of South Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Diana and Doug Sarubbi of Sacramento, Calif.; a sister and her husband, Eleanor and Herman Lieber of Jackson, Neb.; seven grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Russ Rasmussen, Dean Lieber, Scott Doran, Tom Fredricksen, Mikee Hofmeister and Harlan Lieber.
Raymond Wynia
Raymond H. Wynia, 79, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, at a Sioux City nursing home after a short illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Alex T. Washington officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Wynia was born on June 19, 1918, in Westfield, Iowa. He attended country school near Westfield, Iowa.
He married LuVerne Kroksh.
He later married Mildred Kleine on Sept. 29, 1960, in Minnesota.
He was employed at Cornbelt Supply for 25 years, retiring in 1977. He then worked at Sears in Sioux City.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred of Sioux City; two sons, Norman and Ronnie of Elko, Nev; four stepsons, Robert and his wife, Libbie Kleine of Prescott, Ariz., Richard and his wife, Delores Kleine of Anaheim, Calif., Kenneth and his wife, Kathie Kleine of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Roger Kleine of Kingman, Ariz.; a daughter, Delores Keating of Lampe, Mo; a stepdaughter, Rose and her husband, Ronald Wonder of Arnolds Park, Iowa; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Marie Meredith of Los Altos, Calif., Dollie and her husband, Harry Bonnema of Le Mars, Iowa and Clara Wall of Quinn, S.D.
He was preceded in death by two brothers; two sisters; and two half-sisters.
Gale Alger
GILLETT GROVE, Iowa - Gale Alger, 70, of Gillett Grove, Iowa died Tuesday at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Warner Chapel in Spencer, Iowa. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Harold Brandt
HOLSTEIN, Iowa - Harold Owen Brandt, 80, of Reno, Nev., formerly of Holstein, Quimby, Larabee, Washta and Alta, Iowa, died Sunday in Reno.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Alta. Burial will be in the Holstein Cemetery in Holstein. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. The Barker Funeral Home of Holstein is handling arrangements.
George Bringle
NEWELL, Iowa - George Bringle, 80, of Newell died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, at the Newell Good Samaritan Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Methodist Church in Newell with the Rev. Tom Clark officiating. Burial will be in Newell Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 2:30 to 9 p.m. today at the Farber-Otteman Funeral Home in Newell.
Mr. Bringle was born on Jan. 11, 1917, in Nara Visa, N.M., the son of George Sr. and Martha Bringle. He was baptized in the Methodist church. He graduated from Nara Visa High School. He attended Panhandle A & M in Goodwell, Okla. and served in the United States Army during World War II for three years.
He married Meurine Warner. The couple moved to Newell in 1959 and he was employed with the Newell Coop Elevator for 22 years. She died in 1969.
In 1974 he married Virdel Chesney.
He was generous with his community work, and was state adjacent for the American Legion and a city council member. He was a 32nd degree of the masonic lodge among many other duties within the community.
His hobbies included baseball, playing golf and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Virdel; three sons and their wives, Charles and Judy, Donald and Kathy and Scott and Rhonda; two daughters, Katherine Bringle and Martha and her husband, Duane Christensen; two stepsons, Nelson Chesney and his wife, Nancy and Frederick Chesney and his wife, Irish; two stepdaughters, Gloria Chesney and Harriet Chesney; eight grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by two sisters.
Lillian Christiansen
DENISON, Iowa - Lillian Christiansen, 87, of Dixon, Mo. formerly of Denison died Monday at Balance Care Center in Dixon.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Denison.
Adrianna De Weerd
ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Adrianna De Weerd, 90, of Orange City died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 1997, at Orange City Municipal Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City with the Rev. Jack Gray officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at the VanEtten-Oolman-VanGelder Funeral Home in Orange City.
Mrs. De Weerd was born on April 15, 1907, in Orange City, of daughter of William Maas and Fannie (Granstra) Van Peursem. She was raised in Orange City.
On June 27, 1930, she married Teunis "Tony" De Weerd. The couple farmed south of Orange City. He died July 25, 1974 in Orange City.
She moved into Orange City and in July of 1994 became a resident of Pioneer Memorial Home.
She was a member of Calvary Christian Reformed Church and participated in Harmony Worker in earlier years.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Harold and Bernice De Weerd of Delavan, Wis.; a daughter and her husband, Phyllis and Wesley De Kock of Orange City; five grandchildren, Sheryl and Lori De Weerd and Scott, Brian and Kelly De Kock; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, the Rev. William Van Perusem of Ontario, Calif.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Barbara De Weerd; two infant grandchildren; three brothers; and three sisters.
Louise Freeburg
SPENCER, Iowa - Louise Freeburg, 79, of Spencer died Tuesday at Longhouse Residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church in Spencer. Private burial will be held later in Dickens Cemetery in Dickens, Iowa. There will be no visitation.
Norrine Furne
DENISON, Iowa - Norrine Furne, 76, of Denison died Wednesday at Eventide Lutheran Home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Presbyterian Church in Denison. Burial will be in Dow City Cemetery in Dow City, Iowa. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Friday at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison.
Amelia Hangman
LAUREL, Iowa - Amelia (Blondell) Hangman, two-day-old infant daughter of Donna Marie Hangman, died Monday at University of Nebraska Medical Clinic in Omaha, Neb.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at United Lutheran Church in Laurel. Burial will be in Obert Cemetery in Obert, Neb. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, Neb. and one hour prior to services at the church.
Helen Mordhorst
UTE, Iowa - Helen E. (Britton) Mordhorst, 88, of Ute died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Neb. after a short illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute with the Rev. Edgar Bode officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute.
Mrs. Mordhorst was born Dec. 21, 1908, in Soldier, Iowa, the daughter of Martin and Augusta (Amundson) Britton. She was baptized and confirmed at Soldier Lutheran Church. She attended Meadows School #4 and graduated from Soldier High School in 1926.
She married Herbert Mordhorst in 1930. The couple farmed south of Ute until moving into Ute in 1962 where they owned and operated Herb's Plumbing and Heating. They retired in 1974. He died on March 8, 1993.
She served as town clerk, town treasurer and field assessor in Ute. She was a longtime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid.
Her hobbies included sewing and needle work which she shared with friends and family.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Duane and Joyce Mordhorst and Jerome and Gladys Mordhorst all of Ute, a daughter and her husband, Marilyn and John Lindgren of Charlotte, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers; a sister; and a great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Mike and Jeff Mordhorst, Eric, Ryan and Marc Lindgren and Dan Martin.
Leora Pekelder
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - Leora Pekelder, 86, of Sioux Center, formally of Platte, S.D., died Tuesday at Sioux Center Community Health Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12 to 8 p.m. today with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Esther Peterson
ARCHER, Iowa - Esther Peterson, 87, of Archer died Tuesday at Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon, Iowa.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Archer United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Primghar, Iowa. Visitation will be at 11 a.m. today with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Sanborn Funeral Home in Sanborn.
Mary Schulte
MARCUS, Iowa - Mary Josephine Schulte, 95, of Marcus, formerly of Burlington and Fort Madison, Iowa, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 1997, at Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen, Iowa.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus with the Rev. Richard Remmes officiating. The body was donated to medical science research at the University of Iowa. The Earnest and Roethler Funeral Chapel of Marcus, Iowa is handling arrangements.
Mrs. Schulte was born April 4, 1902, in Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Francis and Eliza (Foote) Lawlor. She came to Burlington with her family and graduated from St. Paul's Catholic High School. In 1923 she graduated from Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa. She did her graduate work at the University of Iowa and worked at the library in Fort Madison.
She married Dr. Albert W. Schulte on Oct. 4, 1933 in Burlington. The couple lived for 45 years in Fort Madison. He died Nov. 9, 1977. She moved to Marcus in 1978 and had been a resident of Happy Siesta since 1989.
She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, The Missionary Society, St. Ann's Guild, Tuesday Afternoon Bridge Club, the Sewing Club and Marcus Senior Citizens.
Survivors include three sons and their wives, Frank and Mary Jane of Virginia Beach, Vir., Bill and Catherine of Tiburon, Calif. and Joe and Murial of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two daughters and their husbands, Betty and Charles Knudson of Marcus and Carole and Roy Johnson of Pullman, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Rita Skou
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Rita Catherine Skou, 74, of Storm Lake, formerly of Galva, Iowa, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at Methodist Manor.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Holstein, Iowa. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil wake service at 7:30 p.m. at the Barker Funeral Home in Holstein.
Mrs. Skou was born May 22, 1923, in Danbury, Iowa, the daughter of Antone and Clarissa (Leliefeld) Ehrig. She was baptized and confirmed in Danbury, Iowa, and grew up in Battle Creek, Iowa. She graduated through the G.E.D. program in 1973.
She married David F. Skou on Sept. 13, 1942, in South Sioux City. The couple lived in Galva until 1996 when they moved to Storm Lake. She worked for the Galva-Holstein school district until retirement.
She was an active member of the Galva Legion Auxilary for many years and a member of Our Lady of Good Consel Catholic Church.
She enjoyed reading, walking and visiting with her many friends. She was known for her caring nature.
Survivors include four daughters, Bonnie Jean and her husband, Larry Hintz of Hubbard, Neb., Betty Lou and her husband, Wayne Nafe of Cherokee, Iowa, Bonita Kay Gordon of Storm Lake and Diana Lea and her husband, Richard Otto of Alta, Iowa; two sons and their wives, David Lee and Patty and Donald Wayne and Connie all of Aurelia, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three brothers and their wives, Cyril and Norma Ehrig, Robert and Arleen Ehrig and Charlie and Carolyn Ehrig; three sisters, Lucille Sievert, Louise and her husband, Vernon Barkley and Boots and her husband, Merle; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David Skou on January of 1997; her parents; a brother, Leo Ehrig; stepbrother, Edga (Red) Ehrig; and a brother-in-law, Melvin Sievert.
William Traufler
LE MARS, Iowa - William J. Traufler, 69, of Le Mars died Wednesday at his residence.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Le Mars. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday with a rosary at 3 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m. at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.
