Lowell S. Collogan
Lowell S. Collogan, 71, of Grand Junction, Iowa, died Wednesday at Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Grand Junction. Burial will be in Junction Township Cemetery. Visitation will be after 10 a.m. Friday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Grand Junction.
Frances J. Kerby
Frances Jean Kerby, 87, of Sioux City died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:45 a.m. today at Holy Spirit Retirement Home Chapel, with the Rev. LeRoy L. Seuntjens, chaplain at Holy Spirit, and the Rev. Thomas E. Geelan, pastor of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Larkin Northside Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Miss Kerby was born March 31, 1910, in Sioux City, the daughter of Daniel E. and Sarah (Jordan) Kerby. She graduated from Cathedral High School and attended the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minn., and the University of Minnesota.
She lived in Baltimore, Md., Washinton, D.C,. and Minneapolis, Minn., before returning to Sioux City in 1948.
She was employed as a claims representative with the Social Security Administration for 30 years. She was also employed in the office at Holy Spirit Retirement Home for many years.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, the Ave Maria Court 269 Catholic Daughters of America, the Holy Spirit Service Club and the Marian Health Center Auxiliary.
Survivors include a nephew, Bernard A. Haugan of Sioux City; and a niece, Mary Jane Bede of Sheridan, Wy.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Daniel and Edward Kerby; and four sisters, Mary H. Haugan, Louise O'Leary, Sarah Kerby and Ellen Kerby.
Memorials in her name may be directed to the Holy Spirit Retirement Home.
Loretta O. Nofrey
Loretta Odelia Nofrey, 85, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, at her residence.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. David W. Fechner, pastor of Faith Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 5 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mrs. Nofrey was born April 9, 1912, in Lismore, Minn., the daughter of Andrew and Mary Ann (Martin) Peterson. She moved to Sioux City in the mid 1960s.
She was employed as a school teacher for several years and with Younkers Department Store for eight years.
She was a member of the Senior Center.
Survivors include two sons, Richard and his wife, Sherrie, of Orem, Utah, and Gary of Virginia; three daughters, Anne Salinero of Pleasanton, Calif., Karen and her husband, Jeboy Koshy, of Freemont, Calif., and Kathy Conway of Austin, Texas; and three grandchildren, Kenneth Nofrey and Zuben and Laura Koshy.
Martin A. Simon
Martin A. Simon, 94, of Sioux City died Tuesday at Indian Hills Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Hazel A. Sweeney
Hazel A. Sweeney, 91, of Sioux City died Tuesday at Matney Westside Manor.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery at Centerville, S.D. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
David F. Wilson
David F. Wilson, 69, of Dakota City died Wednesday at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City. Burial will be in Dakota City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Esther C. Earlywine, 80, of Sioux City died Wednesday; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Donald C. Bedford
ONAWA, Iowa - Donald C. Bedford, 77, of Onawa died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, at his winter residence in Apache Junction, Ariz., following a lengthy illness.
Memorial services were held Monday, Dec. 8, at Victory Lutheran Church in Mesa, Ariz. Graveside services will be at a later date in Onawa.
Mr. Bedford was born Aug. 23, 1920, near Onawa, the son of James R. and Ethel (Hoar) Bedford. He graduated from Onawa High School in 1938 and worked on the family farm.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946, with 18 months spent in the European Theater. He returned to farming.
He married Gertrude L. Collett in 1946. She died in 1950. He married Amy (Johnson) Stender on Aug. 1, 1951, in Moorhead, Iowa. The couple farmed until retiring.
He served on the West Monona Community School Board, the farmer's Co-op Elevator Board as secretary and the Monona County Fair as superintendent of the cattle division for 41 years.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran and Faith Lutheran churches and was a 4-H leader. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and traveling.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Ron of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a sister, Faye A. Terry of Minneapolis, Minn.; a brother and his wife, Leslie and Betty of Richfield Springs, N.Y.; two sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Fern Koithan.
Memorials may be directed to either Lutheran Hospice in Gilbert, Ariz., or the Hospice program at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa.
Hazel Bertram
IRETON, Iowa - Hazel Bertram, 87, of Ireton died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997, at Sunrise Manor in Sioux City.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Ireton, with the Rev. Dean Shelly officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Ireton.
Mrs. Bertram was born Oct. 18, 1910, near Ireton, the daughter of Walter and Pearl (Storer) Struble. She attended country school and graduated from Ireton High School in 1928.
She married Rudolph Bertram on May 10, 1933, in Harlan, Iowa. The couple farmed near Ireton, until retiring in 1979. He died Oct. 25, 1991.
She was a member of United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Rudy Jr. of Ireton, Leslie of Aurora, Colo., and Donald and his wife, Carolyn, of Little Rock, Iowa; four daughters and their husbands, Nema and John Heider of Apple Valley, Minn., Marlene and Kenneth Wright of Sioux City, Marilyn and Luther Young of Tucson, Ariz., and Linda and Robert Pearson of St. Paul, Minn.; two sisters, Ethel Hall of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Evelyn Dowler of Oroville, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Dora Bertram of Hawarden, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rosalie.
Verna Croon
CRAIG, Iowa - Verna Croon, 82, of Craig died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997, at her residence.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John's Evan-gelical Lutheran Church in Craig, with the Rev. Doug Dowling officiating. Burial will be in St. John Evangelical Cemetery. Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars is in charge of the arrangements.
Miss Croon was born Dec. 13, 1914, near Craig, the daughter of Herman and Emma (Meier) Croon. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
The family moved into Craig when she was six years old. She graduated from Craig High School.
She was employed with Security Savings Bank in Craig for more than 30 years, retiring in 1980.
She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she helped publish the Behold Newsletter and served on several committees.
Survivors include three nephews, Bob, Mike and David Croon; and three nieces, Barb and Molly Croon and Sharon Maguire.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Milo and Amos; and a sister, Edna Janssen.
Memorials may be directed to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Byrl W. Elliott
CHEROKEE, Iowa - Byrl W. Elliott, 78, of Cherokee died Wednesday at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, with a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m., at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee. Burial will be in Afton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the Boothby Funeral Home. Visitation will resume from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Laura Harding
WHITING, Iowa - Laura Harding, 67, of Whiting died Tuesday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at United Church of Christ in Whiting. Burial will be in Harrison Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa, Iowa.
Roscoe I. Hess
LAWTON, Iowa - Roscoe I. Hess, 86, of Lawton died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton, with Dr. Robert E. Peters officiating. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the McCulloch Funeral Home in Moville, Iowa.
Mr. Hess was born Jan. 15, 1911, in Ida County, Iowa. He moved with his family to the Lawton area as a child.
He married M. Lorraine Sams on Dec. 25, 1932, in Bronson, Iowa. She died Oct. 15, 1995, in Sioux City.
He farmed in the Lawton area and was a deputy for the Woodbury County Sheriff's Department in his early years. He also did field measurements for the ASCS office.
Mr. Hess was a member of Community Presbyterian Church and the Woodbury County Farm Bureau.
He played his fiddle and accordian at many barn dances and collected guns.
Survivors include a daughter, Janet McNaughton of Kingsley, Iowa; three grandchildren, Roxanne, Clay and Brett McNaughton; two great-grandchildren; and a brother and his wife, Clifford and Lois Hess of Anthon, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Raynard McNaughton.
Julia M. Lemcke
VERMILLION, S.D. - Julia M. Lemcke, 93, of Vermillion died Tuesday at the Dakota Care Center in Vermillon.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Concordia Lutheran Church in Vermillion. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Pierre, S.D. There will be no visitation. Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home of Vermillion is in charge of the arrangements.
Ruth Lynch
VERMILLION, S.D. - Ruth Lynch, 73, of Vermillion died Tuesday at her residence.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Vermillion. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Vermillion. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, with a Scripture service at 7 p.m., at the church. Hansen Funeral Home of Vermillion is in charge of the arrangements.
Lloyd O. Numsen
LE MARS, Iowa - Lloyd Orville Numsen, 79, of Le Mars died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997, at Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen, Iowa.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Larry Fett officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Peace Lutheran Cemetery at Alcester, S.D. Visitation will from 9 a.m. until service time at the church. Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Numsen was born Aug. 22, 1918, near Alcester, the son of Henry and Clara (Satter) Numsen. He attended Ludwig School near Alcester. In 1930, the family moved to Mission Hill, S.D., where he attended Mission Hill High School.
He was employed with Sioux Tools in Sioux City for several years. He later worked for Friendship Manor Nursing Home in Alcester.
He married Lotus Peterson on June 5, 1941, in Wayne, Neb. In 1969, the couple moved to Livingston, Mont., where he worked in a nursing home. She died Dec. 7, 1984. He moved to Le Mars in June 1985. He entered Happy Siesta in 1994.
Mr. Numsen enjoyed fishing and yard work.
Survivors include a sister and her husband, Evelyn and Lloyd Arne of Le Mars; three nieces, Arylis Munstertieger, Dawn Callander and Sally Rozell; and two nephews, the Rev. Curtis Arne and the Rev. Mark Vander Tuig.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mark; two brothers, Vylan and Delbert; and two sisters, Madeline in infancy and LaVonne.
L. Peckenschneider
AURELIA, Iowa - Loren Dale Peckenschneider, 55, of Aurelia died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997, at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee, Iowa, of a heart attack.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Aurelia, with the Rev. Jack Weida officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Wharton-Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia.
Mr. Peckenschneider was born June 21, 1942, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Harry and Laura (Kielhorn) Peckenschneider. He graduated from high school in Anaheim, Calif.
He married Darlys Marie Anderson on March 20, 1971, in Alta, Iowa.
He was employed as an electrician at Koth's Electric. He purchased the business in 1976, when it became Loren's Electric.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Aurelia Volunteer Fire Department and served on the Aurelia City Council. He enjoyed reading.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Grant of Aurelia; a daughter, Jaime of Aurelia; a brother and his wife, Larry and Sheila of Zephyr Hills, Fla.; a brother-in-law, LaVern Anderson of Alta; three nephews; and a niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Linda Samuelson
DOW CITY, Iowa - Linda Samuelson, 55, of Dow City died Tuesday at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. There will be no visitation.
Betty A. Snowe
WYNOT, Neb. - Betty Anna Snowe, 76, of Wynot died Tuesday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, Neb. Burial will be in Wynot City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Etta Zwagerman
HOSPERS, Iowa - Etta Elizabeth Zwagerman, 73, of Hospers died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997, at her residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Reformed Church in Hospers, with the Rev. Milton Sikkema officiating. Burial will be in Hospers Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City, Iowa.
Mrs. Zwagerman was born May 10, 1924, in Orange City, the daughter of Dick and Nell (Kroeze) Van Gelder. She attended Orange City schools and Northwestern Junior Academy in Orange City.
She married Wallace Zwagerman on Oct. 9, 1944, in Orange City. The couple lived in Carlsbad, N.M., and Big Springs, Texas, before moving to Hospers. They owned and operated the Zwagerman Hardware since 1949.
She was a member of First Reformed Church, where she served as secretary for 23 years, taught Sunday School and was involved in various women's activities. She also volunteered at the Christian Appalachian Home Mission in Inez, Ky.
Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, Jeff and Jan of Sibley, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Joan and Dave Curbow of Alta, Iowa; five grandchildren, Jill, Jay and Jed Zwagerman and Anne and James Curbow; two brothers and their wives, Reynold and Eleanor Van Gelder of Alton, Iowa, and Gerben and Jan Van Gelder of Orange City; two sisters, Betty Brown of Arnolds Park, Iowa, and Ann and her husband, Robert Vande Weerd, of Rock Valley, Iowa; and 13 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death her parents and a sister, Marjorie Swets.
Memorials may be directed to the Christian Appalachian Home Mission in Inez, Ky.
