Fred L. Hutchins
Fred Lloyd Hutchins, 71, of Sioux City died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, in Sioux City following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jerry L. Wood officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Hutchins was born Dec. 15, 1925, in Sioux City, the son of George and Mabel (Smith) Hutchins. He married Dorothy Jean Leriger on July 13, 1945, in Sioux City. He was employed with Galenskey Brothers and Sherman Brothers Fruit Warehouse. He was also employed as an engineer/electrician with Marian Health Center, retiring in 1990. He enjoyed gardening and flowers.
Survivors include his wife; his mother of Sergeant Bluff; a son, Robert of Sioux City; two daughters and their husbands, Kathy and Chuck Martin of Sioux City and Patricia and Bob Pranschke of Castana, Iowa; two sisters, Evelyn Dean of Sergeant Bluff and Joyce Hawkinson of Lakeland, Fla.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father; a grandson, Danny Hutchins; and a granddaughter, Christina Newton.
Phoebe Rave
Phoebe Smith Rave, 67, of South Sioux City died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Winnebago, Neb., with Delmar Free and the Rev. Tom Bauwens officiating. Burial will be in Winnebago Cemetery, under the direction of the Winnebago Wake and Burial Program.
Mrs. Rave was born Dec. 3, 1930, in Winnebago, the daughter of Lute Smith and Susan LaFlesche. She was employed with Marian Health Center for 14 years, until retiring.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen of Minneapolis; a son, Mike Jones of Norfolk, Neb.; a grandson, Ashley Jones; three granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph Leon of Gallup, N.M. and LaFlesche Smith of Sioux City; and a sister, Audrey Knudson of Minneapolis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mose Rave.
Florence A. Rice
Florence A. Rice, 84, of Sioux City died Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997, at a Sioux City nursing home following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. George P. Zehnder officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Ida Grove Cemetery at Ida Grove, Iowa. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Anderson-Perasso Funeral Home.
Mrs. Rice was born July 27, 1913, in Ida County, Iowa, the daughter of Cornelius and Louis (Streck) Boysen. She graduated from Ida Grove High School in 1931, and taught country school in the Ida Grove area from 1931 to 1940.
She married Elmer Rice on Dec. 25, 1939, in Ida Grove. They moved to Sioux City in 1940.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where she taught for 25 years.
Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, Gary and Peggy of St. Charles, Mo.; a daughter and her husband, Constance and Jerry McGee of Ricketts, Iowa; a sister and her husband, Hertha and Herbert Vaudt of Boone, Iowa; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and a grandson.
Pallbearers will be Richard "Chris" Stone, Jeffrey McGee, Earl Dean Schmidt, Gustave Boysen, Don Vaudt and Lloyd Brown.
Gertrude Aalders
ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Gertrude Aalders, 89, formerly of Orange City died Saturday at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull, Iowa.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Gladys Christiansen
LAWTON, Iowa - Gladys Nellie (Johnson) Christiansen, 95, of Lawton died Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997, at the Sunrise Manor in Sioux City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Elliot Creek Presbyterian Church in Bronson, Iowa, with the Rev. Bruce Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery at Lawton. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services Tuesday at the church. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Christiansen was born May 2, 1902, in Bronson. She received her teaching certificate from Morningside College and taught country school. She married Carl Christiansen on Sept. 17, 1930. He died Sept. 16, 1985.
She was a member of Elliot Creek Presbyterian Aid, the Birthday Club and the Royal Neighbors.
Survivors include two nieces and their husbands, Adeline and Harold Robinson of Lawton and Betty and Raymond Stephens of Sherman, Texas.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Hans, Fred, Kermit, Carl and Erwin Johnson; and a sister, Alta Rasmussen.
Earl Dixon
BANCROFT, Neb. - Earl "Bud" Dixon, 83, of Bancroft died Saturday at the Community Care of Lyons, Neb.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bancroft. Burial will be in Bancroft Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Munderloh Funeral Home in Bancroft.
Opal P. Erlandson
ONAWA, Iowa - Opal P. Erlandson, 85, of Onawa died Friday at the Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Castana Community Church in Castana, Iowa. Burial will be in Kennebec Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.
James N. Garthright
JEFFERSON, S.D. - James N. "Jim" Garthright, 76, of Jefferson died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, at Morningside Manor in Alcester, S.D., following a long illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Jefferson, with the Rev. Andrew Swietochowski officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Berkemier Funeral Home of Sioux City is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Garthright was born Nov. 24, 1921, in Janesville, Wis., the son of Charles and Beryl (Quigley) Garthright. The family moved to Jefferson, where he attended school.
He married Noella Bernard on May 14, 1941, in Jefferson.
He was employed at Cudahy and Swift Packing Companies for several years. He farmed for several years before working as a mechanic for the Sioux City Post Office garage for 21 years. He then carried mail for three years. He retired in 1978, due to Parkinsons Disease.
He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Letter Carriers' Union Branch 69, and had been a safety instructor for National Rifle Association.
Survivors include his wife; three sons and their wives, Jack and Jeane of Sioux City, Joe and Linda of Lawton, Iowa, and Tom and Peggy of Foxfield, Colo.; two daughters and their husbands, Judy and Lowell Vos of Kingsley, Iowa, and Peggy and John Gubbrud of Alcester; his mother; two brothers and their wives, Chuck and Wilma of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Jack and Shirley of Hinton, Iowa; a sister, Mary Lou Slater of Cornelius, Ore.; 16 grandchildren, Phillip, Christine, Teresa, Paul, Holly, Melissa, Stephanie, Erin and Ryan Garthright, Monica Swords, Scott and Steve Van Egdom, Jolyn Grathwohl and Mark, Suzanne and Michael Vos; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father; an infant daughter, Jeanne Anne; and a grandson, Todd Garthright.
Karin V. Gotberg
ODEBOLT, Iowa - Karin V. Gotberg, 83, of Odebolt died Thursday at the Odebolt Rehabilitation and Nursing Home.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Odebolt. Burial will be in Odebolt Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Odebolt.
Nellie Hinkhouse
PIERSON, Iowa - Nellie Hinkhouse, 94, of Pierson died Sunday at the Correctionville, Iowa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Pierson Christian Church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Earnest and Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley, Iowa.
Ruth L. Jones
SANBORN, Iowa - Ruth L. Jones, 98, of Sanborn died Saturday at the Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sanborn Funeral Home. Burial will be in Holman Township Cemetery at Sibley, Iowa. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Ernest Keesling
DENISON, Iowa - Ernest Keesling, 97, of Denison died Saturday at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Faith Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.
Viola Kettler
ALTON, Iowa - Viola Kettler, 93, of Alton died Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997, at the Orange City Hospital in Orange City, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton, with Monsignor Gerald F. Lyon officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church. Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Kettler was born Feb. 11, 1904, in rural Adrian, Minn., the daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth (Haupert) Perlot. The family moved to Portland, Ore., when she was two years old. In 1917, the moved to Kennewick, Wash., and in 1919, they moved to Alton. She graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1921. She then taught rural school in the Alton area and later worked as a clerk at the Economy Store in Alton.
She married Otto Kettler on Oct. 3, 1932, in Winnebago, Neb. They couple made their home in Alton. He died Jan. 24, 1988. She entered the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City in January 1990.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the St. Mary's Rosary Society and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include three sons, Bernard of Peoria, Ill., John of Shawnee, Kan. and Edward of Annapolis, Md.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, one in infancy, Odillo and Leonard Perlot; and a sister, Olivia Hellberg.
Donald Kleinschmit
DECATUR, Neb. - Donald J. Kleinschmit, 65, of Decatur died Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997, at the Oakland Hospital in Oakland, Neb.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Menominee, Neb., with the Rev. Greg Benkowski officiating. Burial will be in St Boniface Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today, with a rosary at 6 p.m., at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Decatur. Visitation will resume from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Kostel Funeral Home in Yankton, S.D. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church in Menominee.
Mr. Kleinschmit was born March 27, 1932, near St. Helena, Neb., the son of George H. and LuElla (Meyer) Kleinschmit. He attended country school through the eighth grade near Menominee.
He married Mary Jean Zimmerman on June 14, 1955. He farmed near Menominee and in 1965, he started a custom hay business and trucking. In 1972, he moved to Decatur, where he contiued farming, trucking and his custom hay business.
He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and St. Boniface Catholic Church.
Survivors include his 12 children, Gerad, Norm, Mike, Dennis and Donavon, all of Crofton, Neb., Jean Schwader of Fordyce, Neb., Donna Schroder of Creston, Iowa, Patrick of Sioux Falls, S.D., Christopher of Norfolk, Neb., Donald of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Donnell of Harlan, Iowa and Angela of South Sioux City; and 21 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a granddaughter.
Pallbearers will be his sons.
Ronald Samuelson
PENDER, Neb. - Ronald Kent Samuelson, 72, of Pender died Friday at a Sioux City hospital of complications from a stroke.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Church of Pender. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Walthill, Neb. A family gathering will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Munderloh Funeral Home in Pender.
Mr. Samuelson was born in 1925, in Franklin, Neb., the son of Leon and Velma Samuelson. He attended th University of Nebraska for one year before serving in the U.S. Navy for three years. He returned to the University of Nebraska upon his discharge.
He married Patricia Raun in 1949. He graduated from law school in 1952, and the couple moved to Walthill, Neb. He joined his father-in-law's private law practice. He served as county attorney from 1952 to 1955 and again from 1958 to 1973. The couple moved to Pender in 1955, where he entered into private practice.
He was a member of United Church of Pender and enjoyed sports.
Survivors include two sons, Alfred Dreyfus "Drey" of Washinton D.C. and Charles Matthew "Matt" of Pender.
