Mary C. Basler
Mary Catherine Basler, 91, of South Sioux City died of a stroke Monday, Dec. 22, 1997, in South Sioux City.

Services will be at a later date. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery at Auburn, Iowa, at a later date. Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Basler was born Aug. 25, 1906, in Lake View, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph William and Estole (McClinton) Hartman.

She married Elmer D. Basler on Aug. 6, 1924, in Yetter, Iowa. He died Dec. 24, 1962. She had lived in Fort Dodge, Iowa, until 1981, when she moved to Ellensberg, Wash. In 1997, she moved to South Sioux City.

She was employed with Fantles and Sears in Fort Dodge and was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Dr. D. Daryl and Sally of Ellensberg, Wash.; a daughter and her husband, Barbara and Don Dillman of Sergeant Bluff; a brother and his wife, Dr. Paul and Sharon Hartman of St. Louis, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Kelly.

Todd W. Call
StaffSgt. Todd W. Call, 34, of Osan Air Force Base near Seoul, South Korea, died Thursday in South Korea.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Sioux City. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Senora Hanson
Senora Hanson, 84, of Sioux City died Monday at Casa de Paz Care Center.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Calvary Cemetery at Le Mars, Iowa. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Wednesday until service time at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Alexander A. Socknat
Alexander A. Socknat, 89, of Sioux City died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at Indian Hills Care Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Daniel M. Greving officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visit-ation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the Larkin Morningside Funeral Home.

Mr. Socknat was born Aug. 9, 1908, in Minsk, Byelorussia, the son of John and Olga (Shostak) Socknat. The family came to the United States and Sioux City in 1910. He graduated from Central High School in 1929.

He married Helen Barrett on June 14, 1939, in Sioux City. She died Feb. 3, 1995, in Sioux City.

He was a merchant and owned and operated his own general store, grocery store and general merchandise store up until 1978. He then did glass and screen repairs from his home for many years.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Senior Citizens Bowling League and the Senior Citizens Center. He enjoyed golfing, bowling and playing pool. He also took Russian and Spanish language classes.

Survivors include his son, James of McLean, Va.; two daughters, Joan S. Thurber of Sioux City and Jean M. and her husband, Jan Lundsteen, of Chicago; nine grandchildren, Natalie, Anna, Cricket and Brad Lundsteen, Mike, Kevin and Lara Thurber and Matt and John Socknat; four great-grandchildren; and a brother and his wife, Victor and Rosemary of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers will be Craig Griffen, Jan and Brad Lundsteen, Kevin Thurber, Matt and John Socknat and Martin "Rick" Rickard.

Anna Bartlett
CHEROKEE, Iowa - Anna Bartlett, 91, of Cherokee died Monday at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. A Scripture service will be at 7:30 p.m. today and a rosary at 8 p.m. said by the Catholic Daughters of America, at the Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Kathleen Boer
SANBORN, Iowa - Kathleen Boer, 69, of Sanborn died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer, Iowa.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Christian Reformed Church in Sanborn, with the Rev. Dale Fopma officiating. Burial will be in Roseland Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Sanborn Funeral Home.

Mrs. Boer was born Jan. 30, 1928, in Hull, Iowa, the daughter of John and Maggie (Brummel) Vis. She was raised in Hull and graduated from Hull Western Christian High School.

She received her teaching certificate in Le Mars, Iowa, and taught in country schools near Hull and the Christian School.

She married Peter Boer on Feb. 9, 1951, in Hull. The couple farmed near Sanborn.

She was a member of Sanborn Christian Reformed Church and the Ladies Bible Fellowship. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and handwork.

Survivors include her husband; two sons and their wives, Jeffrey and Elaine and Kevin and Michele, all of Sheldon, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Marlys and Al Schoenwetter of Springfield, Mo.; 10 grandchildren, John, Amy, Nathan, Danny, James and Matthew Boer and Stephanie, Kellie, Joseph and Kaci Schoenwetter; and three sisters, Johanna Schreur of Hull, Alberta Visser of Hudsonville, Mich., and Elizabeth Franken of Sioux Center, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, John Douglas; and five brothers, Pete, Henry, Albert and two in infancy.

Pallbearers will be John Wesley and Steve Vis, Jay Stellinga, Darwin Boer, Ken Franken and Warren Olson.

Jennie Claussen
ROCK VALLEY, Iowa - Jennie Claussen, 95, of Rock Valley died Monday at Valley Manor in Rock Valley.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Rock Valley. Burial will be in Richland Cemetery at Inwood, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley will be open Thursday.

John Lyftogt
ORANGE CITY, Iowa - John Lyftogt, 84, of Orange City died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997, at Long Term Care Facility of the Orange City Municipal Hospital.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Rev. Steven Vander Molen and the Rev. David Ter Beest officiating. There will be a prayer service at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Burial will be in Newkirk Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Lyftogt was born July 25, 1913, in Hospers, Iowa, the son of Bernard and Agnes (Riemersma) Lyftogt.

He married Anna W. Blom on Feb. 16, 1938, in Newkirk, Iowa. The couple farmed near Newkirk for many years. In 1983, they retired and moved into Orange City.

He was a member of Newkirk Reformed Church and First Reformed Church.

Survivors incluede his wife; a daughter and her husband, Thelma and Barry Parks of Springfield, Mo.; three sons and their wives, Bennett and Carolyn of South Haven, Minn., Jay and Ruth of Orange City and Mark and Vicki of Exeter, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Debra Boylan, Tom Parks, Tammy Harrill and Michael, Jason, Stacy, Kayla, Melissa, Caleb and Sarah Lyftogt; five great-grandchildren; a half brother and his wife, Gary and Beverly Lyftogt of Phoenix, Ariz.; a stepsister and her husband, Anna and Mark Kreykes of Sheldon; a stepbrother and his wife, Peter and Micki Groen of Sioux Center, Iowa; and a stepsister-in-law, Marian Groen of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Wilbur Riemersma; a sister, Hattie Tensen; a stepsister, Matilda Hyink; and a stepbrother, John Groen.

Marlys L. Milne
VERMILLION, S.D. - Marlys Louise Milne, 76, of Vermillion died of cancer Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at her residence.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Vermillion. Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home of Vermillion is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Milne was born Oct. 9, 1921, in Letcher, S.D., the daughter of Albert and Josephine Alt. She attended school in Letcher. In 1939, she moved to San Francisco.

After World War II, she moved to Chicago, where she was employed as an assistant editor to Lyons-Carnahan Publishers, working in children's literature.

She attended South Dakota State Unviesity and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in 1946. She taught English at Howard, S.D., before moving to Denton, Mont., where she taught high school.

She married Bruce G. Milne on May 28, 1950, in Denton. She then taught in Frenchtown, Mont., from 1952 to 1953. The couple moved to Bigfork, Mont., in 1953. They moved to Vermillion in 1969.

She received her master's degree in English and served as adminstrative secretary of the English Department at the University of South Dakota for eight years. She retired in 1984 and became active in reading for the blind at South Dakota State Library.

She was a member of United Methodist Church, the Women's Society of Christian Service, the Flathead Lake Chapter of Eastern Star and the University of South Dakota Faculty Women's Club.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Catherine Martens of St. Peter, Minn., Nancy Bruch of Appleton, Wis., and Jennifer Spradling of Iowa City, Iowa; a brother and his wife, Bernard and Lucile Alt of Kalispell, Mont.; a sister, Ellen Yadesky of Danbury, Conn.; a sister-in-law, Ethel Alt of Pompton Lakes, N.J.; and four grandchildren, Bruce, James and Bob Martens and Stefny Von Crossman.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Arlene; and a brother, Wendel.

Memorials in her name may be directed to the University of South Dakota Shrine to Music in Vermillion.

Martha Noe
ALLEN, Neb. - Martha Noe, 98, of Allen died Monday at Wakefield Health Care Center in Wakefield, Neb.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at United Methodist Church in Allen. Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery. Bressler-Humlicek Funeral Home of Wakefield is in charge of the arrangements.

Cecil H. Phillips
UTE, Iowa - Cecil H. Phillips, 79, of Ute died Sunday at an Omaha, Neb.,hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier, Iowa. Burial will be in Jordan Cemetery. Vistiation will be after 3 p.m. today at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute.

Jared Rutar
PENDER, Neb. - Marvin Jared Rutar, 12, of Thurston, Neb. died Sunday at his residence.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Pender. Burial will be in St. Mark's Cemetery. Munderloh Funeral Home of Pender is in charge of the arrangements.
