Vera L. Mierke
Vera L. Mierke, 74, of South Sioux City died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.
Private graveside services will be this morning in the Green Valley Cemetery in rural Homer, Neb. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. today at First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Dale Jirousek officiating. There will be no visitation. The Becker-Hunt Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Mrs. Mierke was born Nov. 26, 1923, in Homer, the daughter of Louis and Agnes (Borger) Larsen.
She graduated with a law degree from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb. and practiced in Dakota City. She owned and operated a restaurant in Colorado, was a housewife in Australia, and a regulations analyst with Federal Home Loan Bank in Indianapolis, Ind. She retired in 1988, and returned to South Sioux City.
She enjoyed world travel, softball, tennis and golf, and was an avid Scrabble and bridge player.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City.
Survivors include a son, Kenneth of Indianapolis; two stepsons, Jim Warner and Bruce Mierke; a daugher, Linda Mierke; three stepdaughters, Ruth Week, Barbara Hopkins, and Janet McKinstry; and a sister, Ella Larsen of Laurel, Neb.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husbands, Herb Warner and William Mierke.
Elsie Miller
Mrs. John (Elsie) Miller, 80, of Sioux City died Thursday at her residence.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home.
Barbara Goodsell
Barbara Goodsell, 67, of Sioux City died Friday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Sunday at Congregation Beth Shalom. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation. The Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is handling arrangements.
Paul Fondoulakis
Paul Fondoulakis, 72, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Friday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a Trisagion service at 7 p.m., at the Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Jerry F. Waples
Jerry Francis Waples, 79, of Charlotte, N.C., formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997, at Carolinas Medical Center.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. today at Williams-Dearborn Funeral Service in Matthews, N.C., with the Rev. Edmund Walker officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn East Cemetery.
Mr. Waples was born Sept. 9, 1918, in Sioux City, the son of Lawrence and Lillian (Wilson) Waples.
He married Betty Jeanne Saunders on Sept. 7, 1941, in Madison, Ind.
During World War II he served with the United States Navy as a chief petty officer in the South Pacific. Serving as a flight engineer for over 20 years, he was involved in many military operations, most notably, he flew with the U.S. Constitution on the ambassador run to India during W.W. II.
After his military career, he worked with Frontier Airlines in Denver, Colo. In 1971, he joined the Federal Aviation Administration and served as an inspector for 10 years, completing 30 years of federal service. In 1992, he and his wife moved to Charlotte to be with family.
He was an avid golfer, fisherman, and hunter. He was a member of Mason's and Shriner's and was a devoted family man.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Jan Waples Gross and Ludwig of Charlotte; a son and his wife, Thomas W. and Linda Waples of San Diego, Calif.; four grandchildren, Heidi Canono, Patrick Gross, Tina Marie Moreno, and Todd Waples; and five great-grandchildren.

John Paul Murphy
John Paul Murphy, 75, of Lake Placid, Fla., formerly of West Palm Beach, Fla., died Monday, Dec. 22, 1997, after a sudden illness.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Juliana Catholic Church in West Palm Beach. Burial will be in Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery in Royal Palm Beach, Fla. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Quattlebaum-Holleman-Burse Funeral Home in West Palm Beach.
Mr. Murphy was born in Sioux City. He was a resident of the Palm Beach area since 1945, and a member of St. Juliana Catholic Church.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the United States Army Air Corps in the European Theater and during the Korean War.
He was employed with Goodyear Tire Co. of West Palm Beach for over 30 years, retiring in 1979. He then became co-owner and operator of Glades Tire Co. in Belle Glade, Fla. He was a permanent resident of Lake Placid since the spring of 1997.
Survivors include a daughter, Ginny Marie Sigler of North Palm Beach, Fla; two grandsons, Bruce Paul Sigler of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Richard Warren Sigler and his wife, Kelly of Cary, N.C.; a brother and his wife, William and Joyce of Milford, Iowa; and a sister, Bernice Meloy of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen in 1993.
Ernest F. "Jay" Plendl, 66, of Sioux City died Wednesday; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Eric McTaggart
HARTINGTON, Neb. - Eric Thomas McTaggart, 16, of Hartington died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington, with the Rev. Stan Schmidt officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery in Hartington. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, with a 2 p.m. rosary, and a 7 p.m. vigil service, at the church. The Wintz Funeral Home of Hartington is handling arrangements.
Mr. McTaggart was born May 10, 1981, in Pender, Neb., the son of William Raymond and Janelle Marie (Habrock) McTaggart. He lived in Emerson, Neb., until moving to Hartington in 1992. He was a junior at Cedar Catholic High School and participated in football, basketball, and track. He also played junior legion baseball.
Survivors include his parents; two sisters, Amy McTaggart of Omaha, Neb., and Keri McTaggart of Lincoln, Neb.; four brothers, Kevin McTaggart of Wayne, Neb., and Robert, Brian, and Anthony McTaggart at home; paternal grandmother, Catherine McTaggart-Emerson; and maternal grandparents, Wilbur and Shirley Habrock of Emerson.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather.
Alice Goetz
HARTINGTON, Neb. - Alice Goetz, 101, of Hartington died Thursday at Hartington Nursing Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington.
Hazel Herbold
PIERSON, Iowa - Hazel Herbold, 94, of Pierson died Friday at Countryside Retirement Home in Sioux City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Pierson United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Pierson. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Earnest and Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley, Iowa.

CHEROKEE, Iowa - John W. Gaydo, 72, of Cherokee died Thursday at his residence.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m., and a Scripture service at 4 p.m., at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Sophia De Graaf, 90, of Orange City died Thursday at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee, Iowa.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City, with a prayer service at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Burial will be prior to service at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 3:30 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Anna A. Saunders
JACKSON, Neb. - Anna A. Saunders, 75, of rural Jackson died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at a Sioux City nursing home after a long illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Hope Lutheran Church in South Sioux City. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery at Emerson, Neb. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.
Mrs. Saunders was born June 21, 1922, in rural Hubbard, Neb., the daughter of Ernest H. and M. Ruth (Rockwell) Goertz. She attended Bell School near Hubbard. She was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Emerson and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hubbard.
She married George A. Saunders on Dec. 5, 1939, in Homer, Neb. The couple farmed near Sloan, Luton, and Kingsley, Iowa, from 1939 to 1952, when they moved to rural Jackson. He died April 8, 1987, in rural Jackson. She moved to Northern Hills Retirement Apartments in Sioux City in 1996, and then to Sunrise Retirement Community in 1997.
She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in South Sioux City for 45 years and was active in Senior Singles Group with the church.
She enjoyed cooking and gardening.
Survivors include three sons and their wives, Sidney and Vivian of Wayne, Neb., Frederick and Hyong of Denison, Iowa, and William and Patricia of Sioux City; two daughters and their husbands, Dee and LeRoy Pedersen of Jackson, and Jen and Rory Worthington of Pleasantville, Iowa; a brother, Howard "Jeff" and his wife, Katherine Goertz of Sioux City; and 11 grandchildren, Clint and Clay Pedersen, Emily, Jefferson, Christina, George, Ann, Luke, and Reed Saunders, and Seth and Reese Worthington.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Ruth Hinken; and five brothers, Leo, William, Ernest, Henry, and Harry Goertz.
Pallbearers will be Sidney, Frederick, and William Saunders, LeRoy and Clint Pedersen and Rory Worthington.
Alice K. Groen
GEORGE, Iowa - Alice K. Groen, 82, of George died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital in Rock Rapids, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bethel Reformed Church in rural Ellsworth, Minn., with the Dr. David Ullom officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Roste Funeral Home in Rock Rapids.
Mrs. Groen was born Feb. 18, 1915, at home north of George, the daughter of Klaas and Gertie (Rieter) Nagel. She was raised on the family farm near George and attended country school.
She married Orvel Groen on Feb. 17, 1938, near Ellsworth, Minn. The couple farmed northwest of Little Rock, Iowa, for 31 years. In 1969, they moved to George where they operated the George Locker.
She was a lifelong member of Bethel Reformed Church and lifelong resident of Lyon County.
She enjoyed playing pinocole, attending sporting events, crochetting and quilting, which she did for her family until her stroke eight years ago.
Survivors include her husband; four daughters and their husbands, Alviria and John Honken of Rushmore, Minn., Delores and Delbert Krull of Little Rock, Glenda and Gary Ten Napel of Ireton, Iowa, and Janelle and Brent Klaahsen of Little Rock; a son, Dick Groen of George; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, John Nagel; and two sisters, Annie Aeikens and Sylvia Gruis, all of Little Rock.
She was preceded in death by a son, Charles; a daughter in infancy; a brother, Henry Nagel; and a sister, Jennie Groen.
Charlotte Jensen
MAPLETON, Iowa - Charlotte Jensen, 85, of Mapleton died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Castana Community Church in Castana, Iowa. Burial will be in Kennebec Cemetery in Castana. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday, with an Eastern Star service at 7 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.
Bessie Harskamp
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - Bessie (Bleyenberg) Harskamp, 89, of Sioux Center died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at Sioux Center Community Health Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at the Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center, with the Rev. Joel Beeke officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center.
Mrs. Harskamp was born Nov. 29, 1908, in Sioux Center, the daughter of Dick and Aartje (Langerway) Bleyenberg. She was raised and attended school near Sioux Center.
She married Jake Harskamp on Aug. 17, 1926, in Canton, S.D. The couple farmed near Ireton, S.D., before moving to Sioux Center where they continued to farm. They moved into Sioux Center in 1954. The couple also served as janitors for the Netherlands Reformed Church for several years.
She was a member of Netherlands Reformed Church and and former member of Dorcas Society.
She enjoyed tatting.
Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, Don and Patricia of Storm Lake, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Marge and Bud of Inwood, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Harskamp of Sioux Center; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a brother, Gerrit Bleyenberg of Rock Valley, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by a son, John, and two great-grandsons in infancy.
Catherine M. Dreessen
WALL LAKE, Iowa - Catherine M. Dreessen, 92, of Wall Lake, formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday at Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City, Iowa.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Wall Lake. Burial will be in Westside Cemetery in Westside, Iowa. Visitation will be a after 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Walter R. Pedersen
EMERSON, Neb. - Walter R. Pedersen, 93, of Emerson died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 1997, at Heritage Nursing Home in Emerson.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Emerson, with the Rev. Don Wilken officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Munderloh Funeral Home in Emerson.
Mr. Pedersen was born Dec. 23, 1904, in Homer, Neb., the son of Marinus and Julia (Sorenson) Pedersen.
He married Helga Dyer on Dec. 27, 1930, at his parents home near Homer. The couple farmed for 10 years south of Homer on Wagel Creek Road. They then bought a farm west of Hubbard, Neb., where they farmed for 51 years. They retired and moved to Emerson in 1990. She died in 1994. He had been a resident of Heritage Nursing Home for the past three years.
Survivors include three sons and their wives, Kenneth and Alice of Emerson, Harlan and Pam, and Richard and Jackie, all of Colorado; three daughters and their husbands, Joyce and Lee Egleston of Marshalltown, Iowa, Elaine and Don Stienmann of Emerson, and Beverly and Chuck Dawdy of Sioux City; 26 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; and a brother, Louis Pedersen of Oregon.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Eleanor; granddaughter, Jolene; five brothers; and a sister.
Helen L. Dunlap
TURIN, Iowa - Helen Louise Dunlap, 63, of Turin died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting, Iowa.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Onawa, Iowa, with the Rev. David H. Wagner officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.
Mrs. Dunlap was born April 25, 1934, in Flatgap, Va., the daughter of Carl and Bertha (Mullins) Sturgill. She was raised in Pound, Va.
She married Air Force CWO, James Dunlap in 1954, in Whitesburg, Ky. The couple moved to Anchorage, Alaska. They then moved to Denver, Colo. They had four children. He died in 1962, in Denver.
She married Joe "Bud" Weaver in 1965. The couple moved to Mapleton, Iowa, in 1966, and began farming. In 1969, they retired from farming and began working in the restaurant business. They owned several large and small establishments over the next 28 years. In 1982, She became owner of Helen's Restaurant in Onawa. He died in 1994. She retired earlier this spring.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Jim and Bonnie Dunlap of Rochester, Minn., and John and Glenda Dunlap of Alcester, S.D.; two daughters and their husbands, Evelynn and Jim Iliff of Glenwood, Iowa, and Mary Ann and Don Savery of Soldier, Iowa; two stepdaughters, Sara of Washington, and Joy of California; eight grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Jeannie and Hassell Sturgill of Lakewood, Calif.; and two brothers and their wives, Ted and Sue Sturgill, and Tucker and Ione Sturgill, all of Pound, Va.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Edna Echtenkamp
WAYNE, Neb. - Edna Echtenkamp, 98, of Wayne died Friday at Wayne Care Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at rural Immanuel Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Bressler-Humlicek Funeral Home in Wakefield, Neb.
