Paul Fondoulakis
Paul Fondoulakis, 72, of Sioux City died Friday, Dec. 26, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, with the Rev. Evangelos Pepps officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a Trisagion service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Fondoulakis was born Sept. 21, 1925, in Nithravi, Crete, Greece, the son of Nicholas and Erina Fondoulakis. He served in the Greek military. He was raised in Crete and came to the United States in 1956.
He married Cula Minas Voskakis on Oct. 15, 1960. He was employed at Armours Packing House from 1957 to his retirement in May 1983.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and the Cretan Psilorite organization.
Survivors include his wife; a son Nicholas Andrew of Sioux City; a daughter Katerina Athena of Sioux City; four sisters, Stella Kasotakis, Stephanie Lantzourakis, Georgia Anthony Reusch and Mary Stamoulis, all of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Pallbearers will be Mike Portalios, Emmanuel and Ted Michelakakis, Tim Margellos, Mark Davenport, Tom Fountoulakis, Gus and Angelo Sengos, Gus Demetroulis, Farrockh Arabi, Nick Lantzourakis and George Paradise.
Memorials have been established at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
Patricia A. Glaser
Patricia "Pat" A. Glaser, 67, of Sioux City died Saturday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery at Omaha, Neb. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present and a parish vigil service at 6:45 p.m., at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home.
Barbara Goodsell
Barbara Goodsell, 67, of Sioux City died Friday, Dec. 26, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Congregation Beth Shalom, with spiritual leader James Sherman officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Goodsell was born Jan. 8, 1930, in San Diego, Calif., the daughter of Ralph E. and Barbara (Schein) Patterson Sr. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in 1951. She was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War period, having served as a 2nd Lieutenant nurse.
She married Lewis Goodsell on Jan. 1, 1952, in Denver, Colo. She was employed as a nurse for many years before retiring.
She was a member of Congregation Beth Shalom, the Hadassah, the Sisterhood and the American Nursing Assocation. She was an active volunteer with St. Luke's Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband; two sons and their wives, Gary and Gay Lynn of Remsen, Iowa and Gregg G. and Amy of Chandler, Ariz.; two daughters and their husbands, Susan and Jose Assouline of Iowa City, Iowa and Beth and Alan Certain of Sioux City; nine grandchildren, Michael and Anna Goodsell, Jason and Sonja Assouline, Jessica and Kevin Goodsell, Alan Jr., Adam and Aaron Certain; a sister and her husband, Edna P. and Dr. Edward L. Kean of Shaker Heights, Ohio; and two brothers and their wives, Ralph E. and Carol Patterson Jr. of Houston, Texas and Richard and Carol Patterson of Philadelphia, Penn.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Alexander Certain.
Charlotte R. King
Charlotte R. King, 82, of Sioux City died Saturday at the Countryside Retirement Home.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Joseph H. Meinen
Joseph H. Meinen, 75, of Sioux City died Friday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the Larkin Morningside Funeral Home.
Elsie Miller
Elsie Miller, 80, of Sioux City died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at her residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Terry D. Hudson officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home.
Mrs. Miller was born Jan. 1, 1917, in Verdel, Neb., the daughter of Antone and Mary (Paderdah) Zach. She was raised in Niobrara, Neb. and graduated from Niobrara High School.
She married John J. Miller on Dec. 22, 1935, in Yankton, S.D. They moved to Sioux City in 1937. She was employed with Cudahy Packing Company from 1942 to 1945, and in the sales department at Sears for a short time.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and the Dorcas Society.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Marleen and her husband Jim Loftus of Sioux City and Evelyn Jean Nielsen of Jefferson, S.D.; a sister, Evelyn Anderson of Kent, Wash.; five grandchildren, Jeffrey and Scott Nielsen, Kevin, Tim and Kelly Loftus; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters.
Pallbearers will be Jeffrey and Scott Nielsen, Kevin, Tim, Kelly and Danielle Loftus.
Milford R. Paul
Milford Raymond Paul, 70, of Longville, Minn., formerly of Sioux City, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997.
Services were held in Longville on Dec. 23. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City.
Ernest F. Plendl
Ernest Francis "Jay" Plendl, 66, of Sioux City died Wednesday at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.
Laurel V. Anderson
MASKELL, Neb. - Laurel "Fed" V. Anderson, 83, formerly of Maskell died Saturday at the Elms Health Care Center in Ponca, Neb.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Salem Lutheran Church in Ponca. Burial will be in Maskell Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the Mohr Funeral Home in Ponca.
Wayne L. Bilsland
SHELDON, Iowa - Wayne L. Bilsland, 89, of Sheldon died Friday at the Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Sheldon. Burial will be in Eastlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7 p.m., at the Sheldon Funeral Service in Sheldon.
John P. Gaden
REMSEN, Iowa - John "Jack" Pershing Gaden, 80, of Waterloo, Iowa, formerly of Remsen, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at his residence.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Parrott and Wood Funeral Home in Waterloo. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at Waterloo, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Becker-Chapman Post 138 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Waterloo Post 1623.
Mr. Gaden was born Nov. 16, 1917, in Remsen, the son of John and Antoinette (Cook) Gaden. He attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
He married Charlotte Lorenzen in 1940. The couple later divorced. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He pursed a music career, singing as a soloist with the American Opera Company in Chicago, Ill. He moved to Cedar Falls, where he was employed at John Deere until retiring in 1973.
Survivors include his former wife; four daughters and their husbands, Cheryl and Larry Unger of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Jacqueline and Dave Heeney of Waterloo, Bev and Dave Gibson of Janesville, Iowa and Rita and Roger Heidt of Ozark, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Glydell Erichsen of Remsen and Dorothy Haight of Titusville, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Alice Goetz
HARTINGTON, Neb. - Alice Goetz, 101, of Hartington died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at the Hartington Nursing Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington, with the Rev. William Sanderson officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington.
Mrs. Goetz was born Sept. 16, 1896, in Neola, Iowa, the daughter of James and Alice (Maxfield) McGinty. The family moved to Hartington when she was a child. She graduated from Hartington High School and received her registered nurse degree from the Rush Medical School in Chicago, Ill. She lived in Craig, Colo.
She married Henry L. Goetz on Aug. 23, 1923, in Denver, Colo. He died March 31, 1965. The couple returned to Hartington. She entered the Hartington Nursing Center in February 1987.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of America and the Solitaires. She was a former member of the Library Board and served as a 4-H leader for many years.
Survivors include a son, Jim Sr. of Yankton, S.D.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death two sons, Max and John in infancy; a grandson, Bob Goetz; three sisters; and a brother.
Pallbearers will be John, Jim Jr., Bruce and Cody Goetz, Dan Beckmann, John Corcoran and Brad Kollars.
Memorials may be directed to the Hartington Library.
Hazel Herbold
PIERSON, Iowa - Hazel L. Herbold, 94, of Pierson died Friday, Dec. 26, 1997, at the Countryside Retirement Home in Sioux City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Pierson United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Keith Pals officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Earnest and Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley.
Mrs. Herbold was born Aug. 18, 1903, in rural Kingsley, the daughter of Charles and Ida (Benedix) Seitel.
She married Ewald L. Herbold on Dec. 2, 1925, in Sioux City. The couple farmed near Pierson until his retirement. He died July 6, 1966. She continued to live on the farm and was active in its management. She entered the Correctionville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Correctionville, Iowa in February 1995 and had been a resident of Countryside Retirement Home since October 1997.
She was a member of Pierson United Methodist Church, the Pierson Rebekah Lodge, the Tuesday Club and the Northside Club. She enjoyed gardening and traveling.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Arlo D. and Patricia of Sioux City; a grandson, Bryan P. Herbold; and her nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters.
Pallbearers will be Donald Jahn, Leo Keck, Robert Benedix, Bud and Bryan Herbold and Robert Hinkhouse.
Memorials may be directed to Pierson United Methodist Church.
Charlotte Jensen
MAPLETON, Iowa - Charlotte Ida Jensen, 85, of Mapleton died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at the Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Castana Community Church in Castana, Iowa, with the Rev. Linda Boggs officiating. Burial will be in Kennebec Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with an Eastern Star service at 7 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.
Mrs. Jensen was born Dec. 4, 1912, in Charles City, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Gertie (Gates) Parr. She gradauted from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, with a degree in home economics. She taught in the Castana School for two years.
She married Maurice B. Jensen on June 3, 1936, in Charles City. The couple farmed in the Castana area. He died Jan. 22, 1996.
She was a member of Castana Community Church, the Ladies Aid, the Iowa Federated Women's Club, the Neighborhood Club, the Queen Esther Chapter 222 Order of the Eastern Star, a past Matron of Queen Esther Chapter and Hathor Temple Number 38 Daughters of the Nile.
Survivors include three daughters and their husbands, Karen and Bob Jones of Wakefield, Neb., Rita and Merrill Hawthorne of Lohrville, Iowa and Janet and Michael Erwin of New Virginia, Iowa; a son and his wife, Jim and Barb of Onawa, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Marian Parr of Arlington, Va. and Alice Larsen of Mapleton; a brother-in-law, Harry Day of Bloomington, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers; seven sisters; a son, Maurice "Sonny"; and a daughter-in-law, Wanda Jensen.
Walter Livermore
ANTHON, Iowa - Walter G. Livermore, 90, of Anthon died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997, at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Correctionville, Iowa.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at United Church of Christ in Oto, Iowa, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Anthon. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.
Mr. Livermore was born Feb. 22, 1907, in Anthon, the son of Omer and Esther (Petersen) Livermore.
He married Carrie Ellen Manson on Oct. 24, 1934, in Dakota City. He was employed in road construction by Woodbury County for 20 years. He lived most of his life in Oto and moved to Anthon in 1984.
He was a member of Oto United Church of Christ and the Eagles Club in Sioux City.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Mary Esther and Kenneth Hill of Anthon; two grandchildren, Bryan Hill and Debra Wilson; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Jentz and Mildred Downing; and a brother, Carl.
Walter R. Pedersen
EMERSON, Neb. - Walter R. Pedersen, 93, of Emerson died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997, at Heritage Nursing Home in Emerson.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Emerson, with the Rev. Don Wilken officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the Munderloh Funeral Home in Emerson.
Mr. Pedersen was born Dec. 26, 1904, in Homer, Neb., the son of Marinus and Julia (Sorenson) Pedersen.
He married Helga Dyer on Dec. 27, 1930, at his parents home near Homer. The couple farmed for 10 years south of Homer on Wagel Creek Road. They then bought a farm west of Hubbard, Neb., where they farmed for 51 years. They retired and moved to Emerson in 1990. She died in 1994. He had been a resident of Heritage Nursing Home for the past three years.
Survivors include three sons and their wives, Kenneth and Alice of Emerson, Harlan and Pam, and Richard and Jackie, all of Colorado; three daughters and their husbands, Joyce and Lee Egleston of Marshalltown, Iowa, Elaine and Don Stienmann of Emerson, and Beverly and Chuck Dawdy of Sioux City; 26 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and a brother, Louis Pedersen of Oregon.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Eleanor; granddaughter, Jolene; five brothers; and a sister.
Doris Sitzman
LE MARS, Iowa - Doris Sitzman, 72, of Le Mars died Friday, Dec. 26, 1997, at the Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church-Neptune at rural Hinton, Iowa, with the Rev. Mark Stoll officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery-Neptune. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a Christian Mothers rosary at 4 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m., at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Mrs. Sitzman was born July 4, 1925, in Woodbury County, Iowa, the daughter of John and Olive "Ollie" (Maxey) Kovarna.
She married Cecil Sitzman on Feb. 2, 1948. The couple lived in the Kingsley, Iowa area until 1978, when they moved to Le Mars.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church-Neptune, the Christian Mothers and the Ladies Aid Club in Le Mars.
Survivors include a son, Gordon of Mitchell, S.D.; a daughter and her husband, Lana and Mike Pratt of Kingsley; nine grandchildren, David, Julie, Jarred, Kari and Mike Pratt, Stanley and Sara Silverberg, and Christa Sitzman and Matthew; two great-grandchildren; her twin sister, Donna Miller of Sioux City; and a brother, Howard Kovarna of Merrill, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers, Charles and Lester "Bud" Kovarna; and a sister, Betty Frerichs.
Ray Vander Naald
SHELDON, Iowa - Ray Vander Naald Sr., 85, of Sheldon, formerly of Sanborn, Iowa, died Friday at the Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon, Iowa.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at First Reformed Church in Sheldon. Burial will be in Roseland Cemetery at Sanborn. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Sanborn Funeral Home in Sanborn.
Floyd D. Wilcox
AKRON, Iowa - Floyd D. Wilcox, 85, of Akron died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997, at the Akron City Convelescant Care Center following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Akron, with Pastor Steven Miller officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.
Mr. Wilcox was born Sept. 23, 1912, in rural Akron, the son of Frank and Bessie (Crow) Wilcox. He attended school in Akron, graduating from Akron High School in 1931. He farmed in Union County, S.D. from 1931 to 1937, then moved to Akron. He was employed as a electrican with J.A. Jensen. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He married Maxine Lake on March 6, 1946, in Akron. She died in 1982. He founded Wilcox Electric and operated it until his retirement in 1983.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, the Masonic Lodge and was the first World War II commander of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186.
Survivors include three daughters, Pam and her husband Dave Schuetz of Ruidoso, N.M., Cheryl Henneous of Sioux City and Deb and her husband Butch Anderson of Akron; two sons and their wives, Terry and Stacy of Norcross, Ga. and Steve and Lisa of Akron; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Bill Johnson of Odebolt, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry; a granddaughter, Amy; and a sister, Helen Johnson.
Pallbearers will be Walt and Ed Searls, Arval Jurgensen, Eldon Seeley, Sonny Lennon, Kenny Harvey and William Meinen.
Olive Morey, 83, of Onawa, Iowa died Saturday; Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home of Sioux City.
