Opal Johnson
Opal Johnson, 82, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Sunday, Nov. 30, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Larry D. Lane, pastor of Morningside Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Mrs. Johnson was born Jan. 18, 1915, in Hawarden, Iowa, the daughter of Michael and Bessie (Halverson) Conway.
She married George L. Johnson on Dec. 9, 1933, in Dakota City. He died July 5, 1986, in Sioux City. She was a homemaker.
She was active with children's charity organizations.
Survivors include two daughters, Dixie Johnson of Sioux City and Linda Zier of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and two grandsons.
She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
Roberta L. Johnson
Roberta L. Johnson, 62, of Lincoln, Neb., formerly of Scottsbluff, Neb. and Sioux City, died Saturday in Lincoln following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Eileen M. Smith
Eileen M. Smith, 71, of Sioux City died Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997, at her residence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. John W. Meyer officiating. The body was cremated.
Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
Mrs. Smith was born May 8, 1926, in Sioux City, the daughter of Rollie and Marie "Mae" (Hansman) Branch.
She graduated from Central High School in 1945. She married A.D. "Dan" Smith on June 2, 1949, in Muscatine, Iowa.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a homemaker and enjoyed bingo.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Daniel of Sioux City; four daughters, Karen "Sue" Lanctot of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Mary Ann Messick of Colorado Springs, Colo., Judie Smith of Rocky River, Ohio and Debbie Smith of Byron Center, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Leonard L. and Willard; and a sister, Phyllis Wilson.
Memorials in her name may be directed to the American Lung Association or Hospice of Siouxland.
Jane Swanson McGarry
Jane Swanson McGarry, 52, of Sioux City died Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997, at her residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Dann Speichinger officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mrs. Swanson McGarry was born Oct. 28, 1945, in Sioux City, the daughter of Francis and Thelma (Smith) Swanson.
She was afflicted with polio at the age of six and spent six weeks in the iron lung at St. Vincent's Hospital before going to the Sister Elizabeth Kenny Institute in Minneapolis, Minn.
She attended grade school at the Iowa City Hospital School and graduated from high school in Jamestown, N.D.
She married Francis McGarry in 1975.
She was a member of Washington Heights Chapel and enjoyed ceramics.
Survivors include her father of Sioux City; a brother and his wife, Paul A. and Rita Swanson of Sioux City; a sister and her husband, Mary Anne and Gerald Diebert of Sioux City; and her special friend, Jerry Mehner of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her mother.
Pallbearers will be Peter Langlois, Brian Swanson, Lawrence Parrish, Norman Clay, James Coon and Gerald Diebert.
Dorothy M. Broderson
JEFFERSON, S.D. - Dorothy M. Broderson, 69, of Jefferson died Monday at the Prairie Estates Care Center in Elk Point, S.D.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Jefferson. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Berkemier Funeral Home in Sioux City. Visitation will resume at 3 p.m. Thursday, with a rosary said by the Catholic Daughters of America at 7 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m., at the church.
Dennis Busch
HAWARDEN, Iowa - Dennis Busch, 56, of Hawarden died Sunday, Nov. 30, 1997, of injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Hawarden.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden, with the Rev. Kevin Richter officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. today at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden. There will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. today at the church.
Mr. Busch was born April 21, 1941, in Hawarden, the son of Walter Busch Sr. and Clara Schumacher. He graduated from Hawarden High School in 1958. He served in the U.S. Army from July 1959 to July 1962, spending 19 months in Korea.
He married Mary Kay Kryger on July 23, 1971. He was employed at Kanes Dressed Beef and later at Hawarden of Iowa Beefpackers. For the past 15 years, he had worked at the Iowa Lamb Corporation in Hawarden.
He was a member of the Akron American Legion Post 186 and the Hawarden Eagles Club. He enjoyed football and fishing.
Survivors include his mother of Alcester, S.D.; two brothers, Duane and his wife Maureen and Walter Jr., all of Hawarden; two sisters and their husbands, Mary Lou and Denny Maxwell of Farmers City, Ill. and Kathleen and Larry Goodmanson of Canby, Minn; and many nieces and nephews.
Sharon Danielson
HAWARDEN, Iowa - Sharon Danielson, 54, of Hawarden died Sunday, Nov. 30, 1997, of injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Hawarden.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at American Lutheran Church in Hawarden, with the Rev. Timothy Solberg officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Mr. Danielson was born July 18, 1943, in Akron, Iowa, the son of Dennis and Magda (Berg) Danielson. He attended Ring School in Union County, S.D.
He married Judith "Judy" De Vries on Aug. 29, 1970, in Akron. The couple made their home in Hawarden. He was employed at Beef America in Le Mars, Iowa and for the past seven years at L.G. Everist Sand and Gravel Company in Hawarden.
He was a member of the Hawarden Eagles Club.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Don and Cindy of Le Mars; three brothers and their wives, Elwin and Betty of Minneapolis, Minn., Robert and Bernadine of Hawarden and Danny and Lois of Council Bluffs, Iowa; a sister and her husband, Arlene and Kenneth Koops of Bellflower, Calif.; two grandchildren, Kaitlyn Danielson and Taylor Rensink; and a step granddaughter, Kendra Rensink.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ardell.
Peter DeSmet
ROCK VALLEY, Iowa - Peter DeSmet, 87, of Rock Valley died Sunday at the Valley Manor in Rock Valley.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rock Valley. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon today, with a prayer service at 8 p.m., at the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.
Mamie A. Eckerman
EARLY, Iowa - Mamie A. Eckerman, 91, of Early died Sunday at the Oakland Manor in Oakland, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at the Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City, Iowa.

INWOOD, Iowa - Howard "Hap" Jacobsen, 85, of Inwood died Sunday at the Fellowship Village in Inwood.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Porter Funeral Home in Inwood. Burial will be in Richland Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Philip J. McAndrews
UTE, Iowa - Philip J. McAndrews, 77, of Ute died Sunday, Nov. 30, 1997, at the Dunlap Care Center in Dunlap, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Charter Oak, Iowa, with the Rev. Ben Jensen officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery at Ute, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Aaby Post 442 of Ute and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5605 of Ute. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a vigil wake service at 7 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute.
Mr. McAndrews was born Sept. 9, 1920, in Defiance, Iowa, the son of Philip F. and Mary (Carey) McAndrews. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. He attended St. Peters Catholic School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the Red Bulls 34th Division in Europe and the Mid-East Theater.
He married Pauline Gaul on Sept. 9, 1946 in Earling, Iowa. They farmed until 1956. In June 1960, they moved to Ute, where he was employed with Monona County for 24 years. He entered the Dunlap Care Center in January 1994.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife; seven sons, Mike and his wife Chris of Blencoe, Iowa, Joe and his wife Pam of Aurora, Neb., Pat of Sioux City, Steve and his wife Patti of Stuart, Iowa, Tom and his wife Jane of Dunlap, Frank and his wife Denise of Ute and Don and his wife Terri of Charter Oak, Iowa; three daughters and their husbands, Kate and Dale Bielenberg of Boone, Iowa, Laura and Rich Parker of St. Charles, Iowa and Paula and Rick Esser of Denison, Iowa; 21 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; eight stepgrandchildren; and a sister, MaDonna Schramm of Omaha, Neb.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Gerald; and a granddaughter, Kimberly Kay McAndrews.
Dan R. Sanders
AKRON, Iowa - Dan R. Sanders, 62, of Akron died Sunday, Nov. 30, 1997, following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron, with the Rev. Marion Sindt officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 915 of Elk Point, S.D. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.
Mr. Sanders was born Sept. 16, 1935, in Richland, N.C., the son of Ira Dan and Sara Elizabeth (Rouse) Sanders. He married Shirley Malcom on Feb. 15, 1960, in Orange, Texas.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from May 1954 to June 1974. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was employed as a appliance repairman with Williams Appliance for 20 years.
He was a member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 915 and was active in bowling.
Survivors include his wife; three sons and their wives, Robert and Michelle of Akron, W.C. and Sarah of Mankato, Minn. and Bryan and Susan of Orange City, Iowa; six grandchildren; three brothers, Robert and Caryle, both of Jacksonville, N.C. and Wilbur of Raleigh, N.C.
Raymond M. Smith
SPENCER, Iowa - Raymond M. Smith, 92, of Spencer died Sunday at the Spencer Municipal Hospital.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church in Spencer. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. There will be no public visitation. Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of the arrangements.
Agnes R. Sorenson
INWOOD, Iowa - Agnes R. Sorenson, 91, of Coon Rapids, Minn., formerly of Inwood, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 1997, at the Park River Estates Care Center in Coon Rapids.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Inwood, with the Rev. William Breen officiating. Burial will be in Our Saviors Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Porter Funeral Home in Inwood.
Mrs. Sorenson was born Aug. 17, 1906, in rural Larchwood, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Olena (Olson) Eiesland. She attended Augustana Academy and Normal School in Sioux Falls, S.D. She taught elementary school in White Lake, S.D., Shindler School near Sioux Falls, and at her home school Naglested School (Centennial 6) near Inwood.
She married Olaf E. Sorenson on Sept. 21, 1935, in Inwood. The couple farmed near Inwood until retiring in 1966. She was employed with the Good Samaritan Home in Canton, S.D. He died March 19, 1972. She moved to Inwood in 1983 and Anoka, Minn. in 1989.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Daniel and Shirley of Edgewater, Minn.; three daughters and their husbands, Ruth and Dave Chapman of Ramsey, Minn., Dorothy and Bob Howell of Middleton, Wis. and Marilyn and Mike Fry of Torrance, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Robert C. Wiegert
CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa - Robert Charles Wiegert, 76, of Correctionville died Sunday, Nov. 30, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Grace United Methodist Church in Correctionville, with the Rev. Consorcia A. Sanchez officiating. Burial will be in Kingsley, Iowa, City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Barker Funeral Home in Correctionville.
Mr. Wiegert was born Feb. 5, 1921, in Leigh, Neb., the son of Charles and Margaret (Wilkens) Wiegert. He graduated from East High School in 1939, and moved to California. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He returned to Pierson, Iowa, where he ran a grocery store with his parents.
He married Lorraine Martin on May 26, 1947, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple moved to Correctionville, where he was a mechanic for several years. He retired in January 1997. He enjoyed flower gardens.
Survivors include a brother, Dale of Bakersfield, Calif.; a half brother, Howard Paulson of Orange County, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Jean Wiegert of Spencer, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dean.
Harold Wortman
GEORGE, Iowa - Harold Wortman, 84, of George died Saturday at his residence.
Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Lyon County First Presbyterian Church in rural George. Burial will be in Lyon County First Presbyteraian Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the fmaily present at 7 p.m., at the Bolin Funeral Home in George.
